I listened to 2112 so many times I wore out three albums, Rush fans know the lyrics, solos and song stories. Alex wrote this song after imitating call sign at Toronto’s airport on his guitar. It’s solo time!
My favorite band and one of THE best bands in rock history. This song was recorded in the winter of 1980 actually. This performance was just a few years ago. The band has been around since 1968 and professionally since 1974.
RIP Professor! Fun fact (though someone probably already pointed it out but just in case) - YYZ is the ICAO designation for Toronto airport. Another fun fact... if you every want to hear the best (in my opinion) drum solo ever, listen to YYZ from their Show of Hands tour. Neil breaks into an amazing percussion solo that makes the drums sing.
As mentioned before, this song is a reference to Toronto Pearson International Airport (Y-Y-Zed) and according to Geddy Lee was a song about the struggles of leaving home for a tour, but the joy of the tour, and the gratefulness of returning to their home via YYZ, and getting a chance at normal life, for a brief period, before heading back out of YYZ, which is why the song is so up, down, up, deep down, and super up again.
Best instrumental band ever, and they’re only a trio. They’re all elite musicians, to say the least. The bass player Geddy Lee, is also the lead vocalist among other things.
One of the best songs by one of the best to ever play. RUSH is my favorite band of all time. I just found you two and this was one of the best reactions. Watching people become RUSH fans brings a tear to my eyes. New sub here!
They were literally a 5 piece, 3 man band. Both Geddy and Alex had pedal synths on the floor so they could play keyboard backgrounds while their hands were occupied.
right there with ya!!!!! I was at a buddy's place in '81 and he threw on Moving Pics......I was liking what I was hearing, and then YYZ came on......I lost it!!!!!....went out the next day to buy the album and must've listened to YYZ half a dozen times back-to-back-to-back-to-back etc......couldn't get enough of it!!!!! Now, it's like, what a ridiculously amazing album!!!!! Every song off of it has been my favorite at one point or another!....along with 2112, Freewill, Spirit, Jacob's, Subdivisions, La Villa, Trees, Xanadu, etc etc etc.....
Music. For the sake of music. Performed by three very serious musicians. Has I’ll never see them live again, but thankful the last time I saw them was my two sons only time to see them. I raised two Rushians :p
She got goosebumps! Ha! YYZ is the best jam session ever...turned into a song. Fun fact: YYZ is the airport code for Toronto (where they're from), and the meter (the pace) of the song, with its changes of tempo and time signature, was written in a way to emulate a typical day at the airport. Lots of rushing, waiting, things happening all around
Every Rush song is a musical experience. Been a lifelong fan, and it pleases me to see the younger generations appreciate their work, as well. Canada's #1 export, for sure. Rush will never die!
Love RUSH...and happy I got to see them live; multiple times. They were just one of those bands you go see Live as often as you could. The three of them are magic.
Rush is from Canada and this song is called YYZ, which is the airport code for Toronto International Airport. It's an instrumental to emulate the hustle and bustle and craziness of a major airport all day long... if not to show off their superior musicianship!
Great review! So, about how crazy that crowd all got. This is RIO and Rio had a rep for great crowds. Sure, people love RUSH but this was 20 years after this song came out in a band whose members were well into their 50’s. HOWEVER, this was in 2005 and wasn’t long after GUITAR HERO II came out!! Getting through YYZ was the pinnacle of success in the game! So they were freeken out partially because THIS WAS THEIR FAVORITE GAME BEING ACED BY THE VERY BAND RIGHT THERE IN PERSON! Not in their bedrooms, not in the basements or rec rooms, THIS WAS RUSH!! Wish I could go back and go there just for this concert.
It's impossible to sing along an instrumental song! Brazilian crowd: hold my beer Great react! Best band ever! The Three guys Orchestra and please react to more Rush songs! Zillions amazing performances!
My neighbor in Brooklyn said he had seen zeppelin, pink Floyd and all the greats. When he saw Rushb in 2002 he said they were the best live band he had ever seen He bought me a copy Vapor Trails, there latest album at the time. I saw them on Moving Pictures in 81. Been a fan since 1980.
Rush does do a number of instrumentals but most of their songs have lyrics. Check out Working Man live in Cleveland Where's my thing/ Here it is live in Dallas One Little Victory live in Rio. Cheers
Hi Asia and BJ. Rush gave their music to us as a total experience. Music is the real power and you guys know where it's at.

Rush is my favorite band. What was great about them is that they were incredibly talented musicians but you never heard any drama from them. Each member had a role. Neil Peart (drummer) was the chief lyricist but Geddy (bass, keyboards, and vocals) would talk to Neil about the way the lyrics were written and let him know if he was not able to sing the was the lyrics were written. They were together for over 40 years and they truly loved one another, like brothers. From what I’ve read, after Neil passed away, not only did Alex (guitar) and Geddy decide to end the band but Alex has decided to never go on tour again.
Did y’all catch the washer dryer running on stage to keep time? Yup super cool band. RIP Neil Peart drummer. Legendary drummer and writer of rush vocals. Three guys of rush were fire 🔥
I saw RUSH play and the bass was so strong your whole body absorbs the thumping and vibration. Turns ya into a wet noodle after the show..... like you've been in a sauna. Outrageous performance! Great reaction!
Rush has many great songs. Many consider them one of the best of all time, as do I. This is off the 1981 album moving Pictures. Tom Sawyer, Limelight, The camera Eye are some from that album. The Camera Eye is my favorite. Neil Peart, the drummer, sadly passed away due to brain cancer on January 7, 2020. He is greatly missed by many. He was also the band's lyricist. Rock with Rush.
My brother whom is a guitarist, he graduated from a really good music college years ago. As part of their graduation assignments, they haft to team up and perform a very complex jam for Credit in front of a large crowd. He did YYZ from rush, and he said it was the hardest song to master out of everyone’s band pick. Me being a lifetime rush fan since around 8yo, I was excited as hell to him them jam it. They killed it and graduated and got their music degrees with all credits.
Rush had never played Brazil up to this point. So they set up three different shows in three different soccer stadiums near the end of the their band's career, and a whole nation of fans erupted. When they opened with Tom Sawyer, many in the audience were in tears.
Flew out of this airport (YYZ Toronto) many many times. Tenth busiest in the world at that time. And not that big...just busy. This track does it great justice.
This was a magical moment in music. I saw RUSH in concert several times, but this was different because RUSH did only the 3 shows in SOUTH AMERICA and the fans were so amped up that they actually started chanting/singing along to YYZ, which is simply incredible since YYZ is an instrumental song only...just one of the great moments in music and you gotta love it!! Keep smiling 🤘 🙂
This is what sets great bands ahead of the pack. When you have top of the mountain musicians at each instrument and top of the mountain lyrics and a top of the mountain vocalist. Rush has all of that. Make no mistake Alex, Geddy and Neal are all top of the mountain instrumentalist. Neal might be the goat at drums and wrote all the lyrics. Geddy might be the Goat at bass and vocals and Alex is extremely underrated at Guitar. Put it all together ❤ top of the mountain band especially live. Love your reactions please keep it up.
😁 Welcome to the Rush Family! 🙋🏿♀️ Hi, may I recommend 2112? I know you're new but think you guys would love the sounds, story & coolness factor of this Rush Masterpiece. PS 🤗 I love "singing along" to Rush Instrumentals for the past 40 years!
I was at the Moving Pictures Tour In Philadelphia in 1983; it was all that and this and more! The best three musicians in a group who did more than play instruments---they entertained and enthralled us. It was surreal.
Our trio of heroes having fun showing off what they do best. This performance is just as sharp as the studio version. Check out the drummer, "Neil Peart Drum Solo Frankfurt Live." ✌️
The best part of Rush is LIVE!! If you were ever blessed enough to see them live, you walked away in awe every time… most heard comments were how the phuk do 3 dudes make so much SOUND!! Best power trio ever an 3 of the finest musicians in rock history
Nice reaction. Audience is singing the melody no actual words. Rush has crazy skills. They could challenge anyone with their skills and talent. Their drummer who past away is thought to be one of the greatest ever. Rush has a lot of great songs. But that concert in Rio was off the hook. That's the kinda crowd I love at a show.
this song was brought to life in a jam session with Neil and Geddy. this was originally a bass and drum instrumental because Alex was doing some other things at the time. when he(Alex) got back into the studio he added his guitar to this absolute treasure and well.... you see the outcome. also the cymbol ride in the beginning of the song is the FAA sound beacon for the Toronto airport. Toronto is where they are from and everytime they play this song it reminds them of home! Awesomeness!!
Neil actually did not catch the drumstick (to see it, you have to search for the yyz Rio isolated drums) however, he recovered in style. He was notorious for not catching the stick toss up. Shit- of all things, that would be the one that matters least. I've seen Rush about 20 times or so, and saw The Professor miss catching the stick a dozen times. Since he is the definition of perfection, I feel he did it on purpose... If you're digging his drumming, check out Peart with the Buddy Rich band: Cottontail 1994. Great reaction by the way...
"One O'clock Jump" (also from the Burning for Buddy sessions) also features The Professor on the drum kit. I'm looking forward to the first time the newly minted Seattle Kraken are on Hockey Night In Canada. The Toronto Maple Leafs drum kit that Neil used to record 'Canada's second national anthem' should be in the NHL Hall of Fame.
Thanks for this! Music is truly the universal language. It is so good to see people reaching across the years and the chasm between western cultures to FEEL what these guys were putting out into the world. You reaffirm my love for music.
This song started out as a Jam session between Neil (drums) and Getty (bass/Keyboard/singer). That's why the solo breaks are either bass or drums and not guitar. Alex (guitar) heard them jamming out and laid his guitar riffs over the top. What you heard in the video was the crowd singing "Ooohhhh" to the pitch of the song. The crowd was the 4th instrument playing with the band!
2003, for some reason RUSH never went to South America when they toured. The fans down there in Brazil and Argentina put everyone else to shame. They are NUTS for Rock. A lot of bands didn’t make it down there until later in their careers. So these diehard fans had been literally waiting their whole lives to see their favorite bands live. 2003, this is what you are watching, RUSH for the very first time playing there. This is one of the few times an audience blew RUSH’s mind. Those people come from a soccer culture where they jump up and down and do soccer chants. They just transferred that energy to Rock. Now you know what RUSH is about live. Super clean, very Powerful live. Not to mention their high level musicianship and songwriting. FINALLY! The fans were beyond stoked for this to be happening! They were going to see RUSH live! You see the results. Thank goodness RUSH decided to film and record this landmark South American tour. The DVD they made with it is called RUSH in Rio and is one of the very best Rock live packages you can get. I’m fortunate enough to live in a city where RUSH was very well known and loved from the first album on. We are a RUSH stronghold and for other bands as well. So RUSH knew we were in from the very beginning. Came here on almost every tour, 95% of them I believe. They are one of those bands that you HAVE to see live! Just incredible in concert. I got to see them live on 18 tours over the decades. My city? San Antonio, TEXAS. The band loved our city beyond the shows and have said it many times. We were loyal to them and they were loyal to us. Just an incredibly great band! I’ll leave you with this. Do you like drums? There is a certain video that has been blowing minds all across the reaction channels. It’s Neil Peart drum solo- RUSH live in Frankfurt. He aways did a solo in concert. He writes most of the bands lyrics and is considered by many to be the best drummer in the world. The other 2 guys don’t suck either. Check it out and see if you can keep up. I guarantee you’ve never seen anything like this. Peace, Phil One more thing, I got to see him do this live many times!
Youte so lucky just starting on your beautiful Rush journey they are the GOAT guys enjoy every second.Like a fine wine or meal you need to slowly built up to the main course.I wouldnt even out YYZ in my top 10 of Rush tracks yet its still pretty amazing thats how high they have set the bar.Their top tier tracks will become evident with all the requests coming in but there are a few personal hidden gems I would recommend.Starting with the first album the three standout tracks are all brilliant and have bluesy rock vibes to them Working Man Before and After and especially the quite stunning Here Again Geddy produces one of his finest vocal performances and Neils silo is pure gold of of his best too.Such a great song and very different from what you would expect from Rush
When Eddie Van Halen answers the question, "How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world, and Edward replied, "I don't know, ask Alex Lifeson'" (From Rush) That's some high praise. Great video!
Singing the instrumental…….only Rush fans do that….pretty cool isn’t it? Meanwhile-3 geniuses on a live stage- enjoy❤️🎼🤘😎🔥YYZ written as an instrumental….saw it live myself, with my kids- they went nuts too! As soon as everyone starts going……that’s it! 🔥
Great reaction y’all!! Best band ever!! RUSH family present and we welcome you to the soundtrack of our lives!! Keep the RUSH coming… you won’t regret it!! Be well and God Bless…. From Texas!!
You guys are great. Asia what you said about feeing emotion with no words is so absolutely true, I wish more people could understand music like you. Thank you BJ as well. Cheers bud.
The funny part of this is the fact that after a 2-3 years of not playing because of Neil loosing his wife and then daughter, they toured in South America for the first time ever. They had no idea that they had this many fans in South America.
The way they did this song was all instrumental. The studio version is the same way. And the crowd did the "vocal" to this song, They hummed the notes that the bass player and guitarist played. The drummer was the legendary Neil Peart who passed away from brain cancer in January 2020. RIP Neil. If you want to, Check out Neil Peart's drum solo Live In Frankfurt.
Rush had never played in Rio till the night before this show. They didn’t realize they had fans there and SURPRISE! Neil Pert was known for a most famous drum solo in this song. Looking at the AMPED MOB, I’d have to wonder if they had fear for not playing that solo! Bands could only dream to have an audience like this, WOW!!!

One of the best songs by one of the best to ever play. RUSH is my favorite band of all time. I just found you two and this was one of the best reactions. Watching people become RUSH fans brings a tear to my eyes. New sub here!
That's what you can do when everyone in the band is a master of their instrument. MORE RUSH!!!
They were literally a 5 piece, 3 man band. Both Geddy and Alex had pedal synths on the floor so they could play keyboard backgrounds while their hands were occupied.
This song blew my mind when I first heard it in 1981 (senior year in HS) and still get goosebumps hearing it 40 years later.
right there with ya!!!!!
*hate
She got goosebumps! Ha! YYZ is the best jam session ever...turned into a song. Fun fact: YYZ is the airport code for Toronto (where they're from), and the meter (the pace) of the song, with its changes of tempo and time signature, was written in a way to emulate a typical day at the airport. Lots of rushing, waiting, things happening all around
That's the bass for sure. YYZ is one of the most legendary songs to play on bass. Geddy Lee is an icon.
The guitar break in the middle on top of Geddy's keyboards is an incredibly emotional moment. It hits all the buttons.
Top shelf guitarist. Top shelf Bassist. One of the best percussionists ever. All in one neat little package called RUSH. Well done gang.
Brazilian crowd: hold my beer
Great react! Best band ever!
The Three guys Orchestra and please react to more Rush songs! Zillions amazing performances!
Yep! Argentinian crowds are insane, as well.
My neighbor in Brooklyn said he had seen zeppelin, pink Floyd and all the greats. When he saw Rushb in 2002 he said they were the best live band he had ever seen
He bought me a copy Vapor Trails, there latest album at the time. I saw them on Moving Pictures in 81. Been a fan since 1980.
Rush does do a number of instrumentals but most of their songs have lyrics. Check out Working Man live in Cleveland
Where's my thing/ Here it is live in Dallas
One Little Victory live in Rio.
Cheers
Yes, Working Man live in Cleveland - they tear that up, too!
The opening to YYZ is Morse code for YYZ, which is the call sign for Toronto's Pearson Airport.
All three members are from the GTA/Golden Horseshoe.
I love the way you guys appreciate the masters at their crafts putting it all together to make an unforgettable performance.
My all time number 1 band. It is sooo KEWL to watch new people see them for the first time.
One of the best transition bands of all-time...you don't get cheated with these three...MUSICAL GENIUSES
When you've got the audience chanting along to the riffing in a song, that's when you know you're doing something right 🤘
These three guys are three of the best at what they do. Pert on those drums but Getty on that bass is insane.
3 man band! Did you guys pick up on that? Musical wizards from Canada! Rush is a legend band!!!!!
This was in Brasil. Fans were actually singing the song that has no words. AMAZING.
One of he greatest bands of all time. And yes, it is an instrumental.
Rush would often play this at their shows as an encore. They put on a great show.
Saw Rush with Blue Oyster Cult in the 80’s. So awesome. Not only the best three man band but one of the best of all time. RIP N. P.
It's really hard for people to hear this but these 3 are the greatest group of musicians ever assembled. It's hard.
The best part of Rush is LIVE!! If you were ever blessed enough to see them live, you walked away in awe every time… most heard comments were how the phuk do 3 dudes make so much SOUND!! Best power trio ever an 3 of the finest musicians in rock history
Over the decades I saw them live 5 x😮😊 from a teenager I'm now 60 they were incredible!!!
I was in this crowd!!! Maracanã Stadium, november 23th, 2002! AWESOME!!!!
3 of our Greatest Musicians. Miss Neil so much.
Peace, Phil
One more thing, I got to see him do this live many times!
BJ nailed it! The are RUSH for a reason! R.I.P. Neil!
When Eddie Van Halen answers the question, "How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world, and Edward replied, "I don't know, ask Alex Lifeson'" (From Rush) That's some high praise. Great video!
Never happened, but cool story, bro.
Omg this made my heart so happy! Seeing your reactions to one of my favorite songs. This is a song you really feel.
Cheers bud.
Really enjoy your reactions! Love seeing you hear my generations tunes.
YYZ is the airport code for Toronto Pearson International Airport. That's where they fly in and out of going on tour since they're from Canada.
The crowd was literally singing the Music! I've seen them live 7 times. That's what we do. Rush fans are unlike any other.
My First concert ever was Rush!! the best Concert ever!!!
YYZ is what u will see on ur luggage if you ever fly to Toronto Pearson airport.. YYZ began as a jam session between Neil & Geddy during the making of Moving Pictures while Alex was out flying his model planes in Quebec.. on the flight home Neil heard the for Toronto Pearson airport
