Stacey, you are going to see this request a lot: "Xanadu", live from 1981 (Exit, Stage Left video) and there is a good reason for that. You are going to experience a "next level" musical presentation! If you think this version of Neil Peart's drumset is big or "360", they wait until you see Xanadu! Also, please pull up the lyrics and, after the video is over, feel free to do a quick check on the backstory on this song. It is really legendary and EPIC!! Enjoy!
Since it's 1981, type in stickhits then the song you want, it's clear rush updated old videos from that era, the clarity is 80% better. P.s. I sugges to ease in to rush , mostly 81 to 87, the weapon, enemy within,limelight,1997 live natural science molson amphitheater, etc.
@@duanetelesha that's absolutely true, but if you say "your favorite drummer's favorite percussionist" not only does it not flow as nicely, as a saying, but a lot of the less intelligent (anyone who doesn't like Rush) rock fans might just give you a blank stare or ask you what a percussionist is...or probably both. Then you would be forced to dumb it down for them and repeat the saying the right way, anyway. Save yourself some time, and being part of the genius class, but the non-arrogant nice people part that we are among that class, as Rush fans, not wanting to embarrass those less fortunate, just say "Your favorite drummer's favorite drummer." Then you can tell them what Neil really is, or not, once intelligence levels are established.
lead and rhythm, he was the only guitarist. ;-) the false relation lick from xanadu, the slow harmonics solo from subdivisions, many others... alex is in my top handful of guitarists.
I firmly believe if he were in any other band he'd likely be a household name guitar player. But when you're sharing the stage with a shortlist GOAT percussionist who also is the lyricist, and a frontman with one of rocks most distinct voices, who's sometimes playing 2 parts (bass and keys) while singing, it's easy to see why he might be a tad overshadowed.
@@inarar5334almost every band has their secret weapon player( a certain element provided yet not recognized as a star which defines the band’s sound) 13:36 . Ie Michael Anthony’s background vocals for VH, George Harrison, of the Beatles, ironically for his lead guitar playing, John Entwistle of the Who, who took care of his instruments and continued playing bass while the others are destroying their equipment, and multi-instrumentalists John Paul Jones and Garth Hudson of Led Zeppelin and the Band respectively ( I know the Band a different genre but I think they’re a good example for my point). I’m sure there are many others).
The drum pattern in the beginning of the song is the morse code signal for the letters YYZ (Z pronounced Zed), which are the call letters for their hometown airport, Toronto. Neil heard the morse code signal, came up with the beat and Geddy and Alex worked around that. It is a song about the happiness of returning home after a tour. A true example of conveying a feeling, even without lyrics. Leave it to Rush. You truly need to see what I consider to be their all-time greatest performance ... "Xanadu" from Exit Stage Left. I called it three geniuses with seven necks. Watch it to find out why. You will never see three people play more instruments in one song, it just cannot be matched.
Definitely in the top 3 live performances ever made (especially in terms of accuracy and fidelity to the original). The other 2 would be Eagles Hotel California 1977 and Porcupine Tree’s Tilburg performance of Anesthetize. All just stunning feats of musical performance.
Alex Lifeson is (was?) a licensed pilot. The story I heard is that when all three members were flying home together one time, they heard the Toronto International Airport’s call sign in Morse code, YYZ, over the transponder. One of them (very possibly Neil) thought there was a song in that rhythm…and here we are.
Believe me: I was in this crowd! This is Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, november 23th, 2002. There's no audience like in Brazil, the own musicians say
The coolest thing about this is the crowd. This was the first time Rush ever played South America. This crowd had been waiting 30 years to see them. Rush was playing at all cylinders. It was a perfect storm. Love your reactions!
YYZ are the call letters of Toronto’s Pearson International Airport (Hometown for Rush). Neil Peart (The Professor) is probably the best drummer to have ever lived. RIP
What you forgot to mention is that the intro is the morse code identifier for YYZ, that pilots hear when identifying the navigational aid… Alex was taking flying lessons and this Morse code identifier became the intro to the song.
Neil's nickname of "The Professor" is largely attributed to his mastery of drumming, but that is not the case. The guys in Rush are so comical with each other, when Neil cut his long hair, Geddy and Alex joked and said he looked like The Professor from the tv show, Gilligan's Island.
I love your reaction to this timeless band, new Rush fans are the best. I am so glad that you love the drums and bass, but we can't forget about the guitar player, Alex, his love for what not only what he does, but what they all can create together. The greatest ever.
But listen to the studio version first. Working Man Cleveland is epic, but to truly appreciate it and how much it diverges from the original, one must be familiar with the original.
Neil’s solo from Frankfort, Germany should give you a thrill. Also, his tribute performance to Buddy Rich shows his versatility to different genre’s of music.
My first Rush concert was on their "Farewell to Kings" tour, back in 1977, and over the years, I saw them perform live between 20 and 25 times (I've lost count!) Two things that every concert I attended had in common: These were life-long friends (Neil joined the band after their first album was released, so he was known as "the new guy," even after 40 years playing together,) and while they were deadly serious about the quality of their music, they were having fun on-stage, playing together, and they invited the audience into that "fun!" Secondly, they put every ounce of energy into their performance, and the audience felt that. Leaving every Rush concert, I had a huge smile on my face and felt exhausted! Every concert was an incredible experience, and we are so lucky that in a career that lasted 40 years together, we have quite a few live performances, from their first live album, "All the World's a Stage," through their video performance of their final "R-40" tour.
Where did you see them on the Farewell to Kings tour? I saw them on the FTK tour in December, in Washington D.C. (Warner Theater)! It was life-changing!
There will never be another trio like them. Each one is a virtuoso on their instrument: playing together live, such complex parts in a variety of time signatures, keeping it not only altogether but making it look so easy, is on a level only a handful of musicians worldwide will achieve. Thanks for this reaction
@@Sportsref13 - Probably best if she returned to that clip after having watched / listened to a dozen _more_ Rush songs first and probably also after watching a Rush docu! Otherwise all those clues won't make any sense to her at all! 😅
I will never not be amazed that there are only 3 guys. good friends, no scandals or drama...just music both lyrically and musically on another level. And then play it live and sound as good, if not better than the studio version. Fortunate to have seen them play live a handful of times.
You are great! RUSH will take there! We are watching! 👀 For some reason, RUSH had never toured South America for most of their career. Rabid, dedicated, loyal fans had been literally waiting their whole lives to see their favorite band. It was looking like it was never going to happen. Until it did! They went bananas and impressed the band and made the rest of us look soft. Ha Ha! It’s all love among RUSH fans! This crowd is awesome! We know what a live RUSH concert feels like and it’s a very special, big vibe. That’s the easiest way to describe them, RUSH is special. 😁👍
The _Rush in Rio_ DVD includes an interview in which Geddy is asked why they hadn't toured in Brazil before, and he answered, "Because we're not that smart." They hadn't realized they had huge numbers of fans in South America, where they had never promoted themselves.
You are so right about South American audiences. They looked as if they came from a winning soccer match and just continued to celebrate. You have done two reactions in the middle of their catalog. A deeper dive of their older works will give you insight into the thought process of Neil Peart and his philosophical lyrics. If you get past them, you will become a true connoisseur of Rush.
Rush has several different "modes" which characterize their songwriting/catalog. They have the early/Hard Rock stuff, which is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin -- songs like "Working Man", "Bastille Day", "Anthem", and "Finding My Way". They have their heavy Progressive Rock from the late 70's -- songs like "Xanadu", "2112", "Hemispheres", "The Trees", and others. Then they have their early 80's "Arena Rock" stuff, like the music from Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures (songs like Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Spirit of Radio, & Free Will). Then they continued to develop in the 1980's with songwriting and instrumentation that was much more in line with the New Wave and Ska sounds of the day -- songs like "Subdivisions", "New World Man", "Early Distant Warning", "Big Money", "Middletown Dreams", "Force 10", "Time Stands Still", and "Kid Gloves". Then, in the 90's, they streamlined their sound to de-emphasize the keyboards and re-emphasize the guitar-driven, 3-piece Progressive-influenced Rock that they built their career on. You should check out "Dreamline", "Bravado", "Show Don't Tell", "Ghost of a Chance", "Animate", "Cold Fire", "Driven", "Resist", and "Half the World". Then Neil Peart's life was flipped upside down, in 1997, when his daughter died in a car accident. About a year later, his wife died of cancer. As you can imagine, he separated from the band because he didn't know what to do in the midst and under the weight of so much grief. He travelled on his motorcycle, over 50,000 miles, just to keep moving, just to try to focus on something other than the black void that his life had become. He survived that terrible time and was able to come back from the tragedy in the early 2000's. Rush got back together and released a few more albums and live albums, before they retired in 2015. All their albums are amazing, in their own way! Stacey, you are on a real journey with this band. Neil's lyrics are quite profound. Geddy's vocals are epic and heartfelt. Alex's guitar work is like catching lightning in a bottle! They make magic happen, as three dedicated but fun-loving musical brothers. That is what kept them together for over 40 years -- their friendship and the brotherhood that came out of it. The best musicians and best people in Rock!
This is such a fun performance! The crowd really makes it extra special. All three members are virtuosos on their instruments: Geddy Lee is considered one of the best bassists in rock music and Neil is considered one of the best percussionists. Alex is often underrated in the mainstream music press, but he is one of my favorite guitarists; he has so many beautiful solos. Also, fun fact: Geddy and Alex have been best friends since the age of 13 (Neil joined the band in 1974, just after the release of their first album. Neil also writes the lyrics). For a future reaction, I suggest the live version of 'Xanadu' from Exit Stage Left. Also, at some point, 'Between the Wheels' live from the R30 tour in Germany. P.S. I love your David Gilmour T-shirt; I saw him on his solo tour in 2016 and am a huge fan of his guitar playing, as well!
Ha! The fans are giving Rush some HUGE Soccer stadium love! Rush is known for their instrumentals and their top-notch musicianship! You will love this journey, believe me!
It's great that you have discovered RUSH! Their live music is note for note to the albums. I saw them first in 1975 and thru until FINAL show in 2015 at LA Forum. ANY live show you view will impress. Looking forward to seeing more reactions!
Congratulations you are about to journey through one of the most loved rock bands known on this planet. Take your time on this adventure and I'm sure that you will enjoy it to your surprise. Most of us RUSH fans have experienced the span of Rush's musical repertoire and those in that community will be helpful and give you the straight truth of Alex, Geddy and Neil, the triumphant of Canada's best rock group. A slice of the community knowledge with a dash of which trusted search engine that you use to fact check, (if you must), smothered with various music video platforms should catch you up to speed of the history of RUSH from the beginning formation and highly negatively criticization of RUSH, to RUSH's first breakout number one hit. To the Success and moments of uncertainty that the music of RUSH could have possibly stopped due to tragic events of Neil Peart's daughter and wife life. To the Never Quit personification and strength to return to recording and touring to their beloved fans. As you have experienced in this video you will see the enthusiastic fans of San Palo in Brazil express their appreciation for RUSH's music. Primarily because Alex, Geddy, Neil didn't preform as much as they wanted to in San Palo Brazil, reasons I don't know, but that is how it is sometimes. There's much more but I have messaged enough, enough for you to research on your own. Welcome and Enjoy your journey.
Glad to see you are loving Rush, and so impressed with them, as most of us are when we first discovered these three GOATS in one band. Becoming a fan of Rush is also a clear sign to other Rush fans of your high intelligence, no further proof needed. Though your use of the words "daunting" and "intriguing" regarding Neil's drum set and their music were other big clues. Lucky for you, there are another 175+ original songs in their 19 album discography and 8 60's cover songs they did celebrating artists they grew up listening to, released on their cover album 'Feedback.' It's a rabbit hole as wonderful, unexpected and ground breaking as it is deep. Though the band originally formed in 1968, the final three man cast was established in 1974, the same year as the release of their self-titled debut album. Though two of the three, Alex and Geddy were in the band since '68 (The year I was born). 1974 is the year they count themselves as the true beginning of Rush, as Neil's addition changed everything for the band and the three became life long best friends too-no brothers. Though the first album was recorded with a different drummer, Neil learned all the songs in two weeks, in time for their first US tour. Rush's last tour in 2014-2015* was their 40th anniversary tour titled 'R40.' And all three stayed together for a career spanning 40+ years (R40 tour lasted to 2015) over 5 decades. When they finally made it into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 2013, their two biggest fans besides me, Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo-Fighters introduced them. You must see the video of this here on RUclips. If you don't mind songs on the longer side, I would like to recommend 'The Camera Eye' from Rush's Moving Pictures album, the same album that Tom Sawyer and YYZ (pronounced YY-ZED; they're Canadian). Or if you are too chicken to react to a long song (in which case you may find yourself in trouble when it comes to RUSH songs), a deep cut, this early into your Rush discovery, then let me suggest two others from the same album that are "radio friendly" length so became popular; Limelight and Red Barchetta.
you cannot go wrong with RUSH. Another 3 piece band that i am shocked that you have not reacted to is THE WARNING. Neil is arguably the most technical drummers of all time. great reaction.
🏆 This RIO concert was part of RUSHs' 2002 tour which occurred after a 5-year hiatus because of some profound tragedies in drummer Neil Pearts' life. There was some doubt as to whether or not the band would ever play again, but they came back, strong as ever, and continued making great music together until 2015! "Mission", from the tour, A Show of Hands, is a nice change of pace! ☮️
First 😂I grew up in a town outside Toronto and they lived in the next town and we were playing in the park and heard music coming from the factories and we climbed on the dumpsters to watch in the window and saw them rocking out making the most impressive sounds we had ever heard. They saw us and came out and talked to us about hockey (cause that's what we Canadians do 😂) and we talked about the music they were recording and their cars they had beautiful cars. Geddy and Alex gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks they were so down to earth and humble and when I was older I saw them live twice in Toronto. The second time in front of 500,000 crazy Canadians. Epic show. Try Battlescar a collaborative piece between Max Webster and Rush 2 amazing Canadian bands. RIP to The Professor Neil Peart.🙏 Great reaction as usual my friend and Peace out girl ✌️ ☮️
YYZ is the airport code for Pearson International Airport, which is main airport for Toronto, Ontario - essentially the home base for all the members of Rush
Great reaction!!! I missed reacting to your first one when I saw it for Tom Sawyer. You obviously appreciate artistical musicianship. Rush is absolutely the best 3-piece band ever (quite frankly top five best band ever, no matter the members). Pure musicianship and fluid artistry in each of them and their instruments along with the pure chemistry between them. Welcome aboard the Rush Train!!! Now time to venture down the RUSH rabbit hole. I would suggest the songs below to add to your Rush journey and reactions. All of these are absolutely fire!!! Especially all of the LIVE instrumentals with Geddy’s Bass, Alex’s Guitar, and Neil’s percussive artistry. - La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - best instrumental EVER. - Working Man... Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (original studio version was in 1974)...The pure sight and performance of three men in their upper 50's take control of the stage and perform and play like they were in their 20's. - Xanadu...Live version 1981 Exit Stage Left tour...will leave you speechless from pure musicianship...original was 1977. - Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980 - Closer to the Heart (Live 1998 Different Stages) - original was 1977 - Limelight...studio version - original was 1981. - The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012 - Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982 - Freewill... Live from Snakes and Arrows Tour 2007 - original was 1980 - Fly by Night - original was 1975 - Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993 - Malignant Narcissism (instrumental) and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007 - Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.
You'll love so many of their songs, and Brazilians are the best in the world!! Every one of the bands I love see to end their tours in Rio, and the fans know every word to every song even though they speak Portuguese. Please do Distant Early Warning by Rush
Good to see continuing your journey with Rush. Am glad that you are enjoying yourself. Stay blessed Stacey and keep them coming. I would recommend the song Red Sector A. Take care 😀
This is one of your best selection so far, and great reaction from a long time RUSH fan. Check out Neil's solo from Frankfort Germany you will be impressed.
4 decades of the most precise music by 3 of the best rock musicians. Moving pictures was one of my favorite albums Take the time and enjoy it . You have 40 years of catching up to do .
You have entered the Rush zone! The band, Geddy Lee (Bassist, keyboards and vocals), Alex LIfeson (guitars) and Neil Peart (a.k.a. The Professor R.I.P.) make some of the most iconic music out there. There are great bands out there and Rush is up at the top of the list. I agree with an earlier comment about listening to Xanadu from the Exit...Stage Left concert but don't cut out the start of that piece and that would be The Trees, which is the song just before Xanadu. They blend together and are an amazing trip into life and space.
This was their first concert in Brazil. I think I remember Geddy saying thst if they knew they had THAT many fans down there, they would have played there a LOT sooner🙂🙂
Peart is one of the all time greats. His drum kits were legendary, and he could make them sing like no one else. I feel like Geddy doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves too but he’s got such a unique style on bass.
The fans are singing to an instrumental!!! That’s how you know the band is great! Rush is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Band!!! These musicians are master class!
Rush was one of the few bands where every member was a master of their craft. I've been a Rush fan since the early 80s seeing every tour since Grace Under Pressure.
Rush is one of my favorite bands. Was lucky that my Dad was too. We saw 11 of their shows together when I was young in the 2010s before the retired. Glad to see people are still discovering their amazing music and performances. R.i.P the Professor, one of the greatest lyricists and drummers to exist. Also on Geddy always has cool, weird things on stage. On this tour and R30 he had washing machines that had T-shirts in them that would get thrown out to the crowd. On Snakes and Arrows he had Chicken Roasters and they'd use the chicken for crew catering. The last two tours he had some really cool steam punk scenery. I'd also highly recommend checking out Rammstein live. They are by far the best live band on the planet. Their performances and musical tightness on stage is second to none. Another band I'd love to see you react to is King Gizzard and The Lizzard Wizzard. They write pretty much anything. Seriously they've written everything from a synth record, to metal, to psycadelic rock. They're a great live band too. Edit: I've seen you've reacted to Rammstein, but I'd love to see you react to more of their live content from throughout the years. Especially their 2019-2024 stadium tour.
Great job picking up on Rush taking joy from pleasing their audience. They were a no drama band who took real pride in their live performances. This captures that quite well.
A fan favourite, mainly because the guys just go off on one and show what incredible musicians they are. Rush are an absolute tour de force in the rock arena.
GREAT reaction Stacey!! Only a South American crowd could 'sing' along with an instrumental!! THAT's a football crowd for ya! I saw this tour (and frankly every tour since '97), and let me tell you, this song NEVER gets old! But to see how wild the South American Rio crowd go for this was amazing! Being a Canadian just outside of Toronto - I always get that good feeling when I see 'YYZ' on my luggage tags, because it means I'm going home! (which was the inspiration for Rush to write this to begin with) - YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's Pearson International. Please continue this journey! Subdivisions, Xanadu, Limelight, The Spirit Of Radio, La Villa Strangiato (another incredible instrumental), and especially 2112 (a 20+ minute EPIC!) - are all musts going forward! Cheers from Canada, eh!
being a Canadian Rush is a national treasure!!! They played my high school in 74 for an assembly from that point on I was hooked Have seen them 9 times in big arenas and in small venues. All 3 of these guys are considered the best at their instruments. Alex probably the most underrated guitarist ever, Geddy is bass, organ both hand and foot (Alex too for foot) and a crazy vocalist. Neil was considered in the same breath as John Bonham and Keith Moon. Goats all of them.
Great job Stacey! We love your channel cause you just get us RUSH fans. We are more than fans, we are a family. You said they were moving fast, so give 'the garden" a watch please. I played it at my little brothers funeral 2 years ago due to the message. It will touch every corner of your heart. Again, thank you so much and much love you you.
I saw Rush live front row center in 1984 at the Philadelphia civic center power windows tour with blue oyster cult as the opening band.one of the best concerts ever!!!
My top 3 bands of all time include RUSH. amazing musicians, funny funny funny guys, like serious dorks but absolutely hilarious. Live they are astounding, seen them live 6 times and I’m gutted we won’t see them live again…with Neil anyway. RIP Professor.
Please dive deeper into the Rush rabbit hole. There is a huge fan base here waiting to see more of your reactions. I know you’re going to love this band! I have been loving your reactions, especially to the drummer, Mr. Niel Peart (not pronounced like the shampoo by the way). I recommend Niel's Drum Solo in Frankfurt (live). ruclips.net/video/LWRMOJQDiLU/видео.htmlsi=eGSPzuCacO8bLYrO, But not before Limelight with the three of them in the studio. Don’t miss the dog at the end this because of a RUclips pop-up (you will know what I mean when you see it). When you think you are ready, do the epic 20-minute song 2112 (animated version).
Yes, Stacey, if you continue to follow the RUSH rabbit hole, you will find out how talented and deversive these 3 men are/were. Neil (RIP) was the greatest drummer of all time. It was once drummers use a metronome to keep the beat, but metronomes use Neil Peart. As @michaelbriefs9764 stated just before me. "Xanadu" from the 1981 live show is a great one. This tour was the last tour that Neil had his entire acoustic percussion and drum set. In 1982, to save space on tours a drum pad made by Roland, could replicate many of his percussion instruments like the wood blocks, glockenspiel, tubular bells, etc. Matter of fact, the beginning of this song you hear the glockenspiel sound. I've been a fan of RUSH since I was 17, and I was 59 when I found out that the glockenspiel part at the beginning is morse code for YYZ. If you just want to see Neil at his best. His drum solo "Live In Frankfort" is a must.
One of the best things about Rush (besides their incredible talent, of course) is the great friendship they had, and Alex and Geddy still have. Best friends since the '60's.
Stacey you are . . . SIMPLY AWESOME!! Great reaction!!! It's great to see you broaden your knowledge in Rock n Roll!! And RUSH is one band that can help you appreciate their raw talent!! How cool is it that the fans are "singing" along to an instrumental?? Truly AMAZING!
So glad you're enjoying Rush - I've been a UK fan since the early 80s, seen them live a couple of times. Suggest you review La Villa Stragiato, Xanadu and Losing It
'YYZ' is the 3-letter airport code for the city of Toronto, Canada...Neil Peart 'The Professor' (R.I.P.) played the opening w/ 'Y-Y-Z' in morse code. The instrumental on their 1981 album 'Moving pictures' (which had 'Tom Sawyer' on it) came together while Rush were recording in the studio... Guitarist Alex Lifeson took a break from the sessions to fly his remote-controlled toy airplane outside... Meanwhile, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart started jamming on a new idea... and by the time Lifeson returned to the studio, they had already composed 'YYZ'. With 'Moving pictures' selling 4x platinum in the US, Rush fans loved 'YYZ' in concert; it actually became more popular than another Rush instrumental - 'La Villa Strangiato' from their 1978 album 'Hemispheres'... Rush was a huge influence on Kirk Hammett of Metallica... Sebastian Bach of Skid Row... bands like Primus... Mr. Big... Dream Theater ... Tool ... etc. The 'Rush in Rio' CD/ DVD was recorded in Brazil in 2002... it was Rush's first tour in S. America and 3 of the biggest shows of their entire career on their 'Vapor trails' tour... Rush admitted that they had no idea if they were even popular in S. America and their records had sold modestly there officially... However, bootleg copies of Rush albums sold were much more widespread and when the band arrived in Brazil for 3 shows at Porto Alegre... Sao Paulo ... and Rio... Rush was greeted like The Beatles! The 3 shows sold more tickets than any Rush show ever (Rush played The Gorge Amphitheater in Washington state to about 25K fans in 1997)... the Porto Alegre show sold 30K tickets... the Sao Paulo show sold 60K... and the final night in Rio was 40K 😲 Neil Peart's drum kit was a 360 degree kit... he would alternate on it during his concert drum solo - a highlight of every Rush show. 'YYZ' was a highlight in Rio because the fans started singing to the instrumental... It was a triumph for Rush, especially after the ordeal that drummer Neil Peart went through losing his daughter and wife within a year in 1997/ '98 and then spending 2 years traveling on his motorbike to heal from the tragedy of losing his family... He finally settled down in California in 2000... remarried... and then, gradually started working on new music w/ Rush again in 2001... Their 2002 tour was their first since 1997. Other Rush songs to check out - 'The spirit of radio'... 'Closer to the heart' ... 'Subdivisions' ... 'Limelight'... 'Fly by night' ... 'Time stand still' ... 'Dreamline'... 'Distant early warning' ... 'Far cry'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘
I Attend at the tour.... i Was in São Paulo and Porto Alegre concert!!! As a Brazilian (and Drummer) we was waiting for this band at least for 30 years (I only for 10 years)... You have to React for Neil's Drum solo... you see how fast, and crazy.... Great Video as Always!!!
Lucky enough to have seen them twice. One of the greatest power trios the world has ever seen. And that Brazilian crowd is nuts, theres no one else like them.
YYZ is the code used for the Toronto Canada airport, this song was inspired by Neil as they were coming in for a landing back home after a tour while still on the plane.
YYZ is an instrumental. So glad you are going down the Rush Rabbit Hole! So many great songs! Whatever you choose, you must watch the Live...so amazing! Geddy Lee (vocals, bass guitar, keyboards), Alex Lifeson (guitar) and Neil Peart (drums, percussion). Working Man Live in Cleveland is a monster classic and must see! You are so right about South American audiences...They know how to rock! Must watch ACDC Live in RIver Plate Argentina!

R.I.P. Neil Peart The Professor
" your favorite drummer's favorite drummer "
A small correction Neil is more than a drummer he is a "percussionist".
There is an 8 minute Neil Piert ,RIP drum solo from Germany you have got to see to believe. Arguable the very best drummer of all time!
@@duanetelesha Thank you for saying that! 👍👍

Let's not forget the genius of Alex Lifeson - one of the greatest lead guitarist ever - full stop.
You bet. Alex plays such a distinctive guitar sound and style. You hear those beautiful melodic notes and rhythms and know it's Rush.
@@bombasticbushkin4985 Yes! He also uses harmonics beautifully. His playing is powerful but also nuanced which was perfect for the music Rush made.
lead and rhythm, he was the only guitarist. ;-) the false relation lick from xanadu, the slow harmonics solo from subdivisions, many others... alex is in my top handful of guitarists.
Rush is the only band so good that the crowd sings along to their instrumentals
@@yelnikigwawa1845 Same story I heard must be true! hahaha
-.-- -.-- --.. (YYZ)
incorrect
Red Barchetta, Limelight, Subdivisions, 2112, Closer to the Heart, Fly by Night, Spirit of Radio
Red barchetta is my favorite.
totally agree ¡¡¡
Great list, i'll squeeze in 'The Trees' while we're at it
All of those!
Also "Free Will"
Believe me: I was in this crowd! This is Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, november 23th, 2002. There's no audience like in Brazil, the own musicians say
I got to believe you. The crowd singing along, jumping, was amazing Mi Amigo.
Brazilian concert crowds make all other crowds seem lifeless.
The song begins with Neil tapping out YYZ in morse code.
The coolest thing about this is the crowd. This was the first time Rush ever played South America. This crowd had been waiting 30 years to see them. Rush was playing at all cylinders. It was a perfect storm. Love your reactions!
Rush is one of the greatest bands ever. You need to listen to 2112
THIS x 100
Please!!!!
2112 All of it.
🤘😎🤘
2112 amazing but maybe not for someone just getting into Rush.
@@ReplicantSeven that’s cool
Neil's nickname of "The Professor" is largely attributed to his mastery of drumming, but that is not the case. The guys in Rush are so comical with each other, when Neil cut his long hair, Geddy and Alex joked and said he looked like The Professor from the tv show, Gilligan's Island.
I love your reaction to this timeless band, new Rush fans are the best.
I am so glad that you love the drums and bass, but we can't forget about the guitar player, Alex, his love for what not only what he does, but what they all can create together. The greatest ever.
Working Man, live in Cleveland is a must watch for Rush fans
But listen to the studio version first. Working Man Cleveland is epic, but to truly appreciate it and how much it diverges from the original, one must be familiar with the original.
Yeah gotta do the studio ver first. And then watch Alex murder a guitar.
I'd like to add my vote for "Working Man" live in Cleveland. You will be amazed
I was lucky enough to see them 23 times in concert. Masters at work.
Neil’s solo from Frankfort, Germany should give you a thrill. Also, his tribute performance to Buddy Rich shows his versatility to different genre’s of music.
Looking forward to the eventual reaction to the Frankfurt drum solo.
IMHO, I think the drum solo from this Rio concert is more watchable from a live show standpoint.
RUSH is SPECIAL. You're right it's difficult to describe why they are, but any thinking person can sense it.
There will never be another trio like them. Each one is a virtuoso on their instrument: playing together live, such complex parts in a variety of time signatures, keeping it not only altogether but making it look so easy, is on a level only a handful of musicians worldwide will achieve. Thanks for this reaction
7:27 - To be fair to them... at this time they had been performing that song, almost nightly, for 20+ years. It was a regular in their setlist.
That crowd bouncing along is just incredible!
You need to check out The Spirit of Radio, it's an abosolutely incredible song, and one of their best
One of the most boring
@@xDporrada you're soooooo wrong it's not even funny
I reckon 'Spirit Of Radio' would be a great choice for her to check out next! 😊
she will have to watch the video multiple times to catch all the subtle RUSH clues spread throughout the video
@@Sportsref13 - Probably best if she returned to that clip after having watched / listened to a dozen _more_ Rush songs first and probably also after watching a Rush docu! Otherwise all those clues won't make any sense to her at all! 😅
I am really loving this journey your on, your reacts so far! R.I.P. Neil, greatest drummer ever!!!!
This Show was here in Riooooo!!!
I was there!!!
Fantastic!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
I'm still waiting you hear Xanadu from Exit Stage Left video. You will get crazy!!!
RUSH is one of the best bands ever. I was lucky enough to see them a handful of times.🤘🤘
I will never not be amazed that there are only 3 guys. good friends, no scandals or drama...just music both lyrically and musically on another level. And then play it live and sound as good, if not better than the studio version. Fortunate to have seen them play live a handful of times.
Come to Brazil, Stacey. We are so musical people. Tks for reacting to Rush 👏
You are great! RUSH will take there! We are watching! 👀
For some reason, RUSH had never toured South America for most of their career.
Has to be one of the best songs ever written. All the pieces come together perfectly
For next Rush songs I recommend: Subdivisions, Closer to the heart, and Roll The Bones.
The entire Rush in Rio show is worth the watch.
... including the 'The Boys In Brazil' documentary! 😀👍
How many fans does Rush have?
-There's Brazillions of them!
One of my favourite live show recordings
I saw the same show in Charlotte but would have given almost anything to be at the Rio show!
The Spirit of Radio, Limelight, Closer to the Heart, La Villa Strangiato.
You know you've "made it" when a packed crowd, in a foreign country is singing along to a song with no lyrics! Rush is truly phenomenal!!
Ha! The fans are giving Rush some HUGE Soccer stadium love! Rush is known for their instrumentals and their top-notch musicianship! You will love this journey, believe me!
Xanadu, live in 1981, exit stage left. The vidio is magic!
It's great that you have discovered RUSH! Their live music is note for note to the albums. I saw them first in 1975 and thru until FINAL show in 2015 at LA Forum. ANY live show you view will impress. Looking forward to seeing more reactions!
As a Canadian I've always said we gave Rush to the world but kept The Hip to ourselves. I'd love to see you react to Grace, Too by the Tragically Hip!
Yes, Grace, Too was killer, especially live, they did a great set at Woodstock 99.
Your smile through this made me smile so hard I almost broke my face.
They just radiate so much joy on stage.
Neil Peart drum solo - live in Frankfurt
That's the video you want if you want to see the gloriousness of his work.
Love your Gilmour shirt! 😁
I have the same shirt, was the first thing I noticed in the video! Gilmour rules.
first thing I noticed aswell , Stacy loves him me thinks 😂
Check out Rush - Xanadu from 1981's Exit Stage Left tour
The Rush rabbit hole is deep and full of different fun trails ... Enjoy ... Your comments are awesome ❤❤❤ LFG!!! RIP to The Professor Neil Peart
Yes , 2112, the Trees, Red Barchetta, and La Villa Strangiato, but here's my ballad recommedation-Losing It.
"Losing it" live from the R40 show
Great live version from R40!
Lucky for you, there are another 175+ original songs in their 19 album discography and 8 60's cover songs they did celebrating artists they grew up listening to, released on their cover album 'Feedback.'
It's a rabbit hole as wonderful, unexpected and ground breaking as it is deep.
Its an instrumental and the crowd is singing along as though it has lyrics
Yeah, it's annoying. You just wish they would shut the F up.
you cannot go wrong with RUSH. Another 3 piece band that i am shocked that you have not reacted to is THE WARNING. Neil is arguably the most technical drummers of all time. great reaction.
Or Halestorm.
The joy of watching people discovering Rush 🥰
They're an epic band for sure - all 3 of them are experts in their craft. "La Villa Strangiata" is another good song to check out.
"Dirk, I think we've found us a Rush fan..."
Jason Segel: "There's no Dirk in Rush! 😧"
Paul Rudd: "It's a nickname!! 😩"
😄
Funny ass movie 😁
🏆 This RIO concert was part of RUSHs' 2002 tour which occurred after a 5-year hiatus because of some profound tragedies in drummer Neil Pearts' life. There was some doubt as to whether or not the band would ever play again, but they came back, strong as ever, and continued making great music together until 2015! "Mission", from the tour, A Show of Hands, is a nice change of pace! ☮️
One of my favorite live performances.
You can never ever go wrong with Rush Live!! Very deep dive. Rock On Stacey!!
Great reaction! You will thoroughly enjoy the Rush rabbit hole, and the Rush army will be here to support you. ❤😎
40,000 Brazilians singing along to an instrumental, bonkers!
Don't know how true it is, but I heard it was over 60,000
I think Rio was 40,000 but Sao Paolo on the same tour was 60,000 I believe.
Research what YYZ means and how this iconic song came to be…
YYZ is the airport code for Pearson International Airport, which is main airport for Toronto, Ontario - essentially the home base for all the members of Rush
Also since they are Canadian, they pronounce it as "why why zed".
- Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980
- Closer to the Heart (Live 1998 Different Stages) - original was 1977
- Limelight...studio version - original was 1981.
- The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012
- Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982
- Freewill... Live from Snakes and Arrows Tour 2007 - original was 1980
- Fly by Night - original was 1975
- Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
- Malignant Narcissism (instrumental) and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007
- Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004.
Take care 😀
What you saw onstage, that was what their shows were like. Just three dudes out there meshing three epic solos into one song.
This is one of your best selection so far, and great reaction from a long time RUSH fan. Check out Neil's solo from Frankfort Germany you will be impressed.
4 decades of the most precise music by 3 of the best rock musicians.
Moving pictures was one of my favorite albums
Take the time and enjoy it .
You have 40 years of catching up to do .
There's no lyrics and the crowd sings the melody. Makes Geddy smile
Ive seen Rush over 30 times and met them a handful of times. great guys!!! please check out Neils drum solo and Natural Science or 2112 next
Legendary performance of a legendary piece of music. Crowd is insane!
Love your reaction ♥️ and welcome to the Rush rabbit hole 🕳 you won't regret it
Great job picking up on Rush taking joy from pleasing their audience. They were a no drama band who took real pride in their live performances. This captures that quite well.
A fan favourite, mainly because the guys just go off on one and show what incredible musicians they are. Rush are an absolute tour de force in the rock arena.
Yyz, that song is a masterpiece.
Excellent!!!!!👍👍👍
The entire RUSH in Rio dvd set is amazing. You’ll have to check it out in its entirety. Especially the bonus disc showing the band prior to the show.
That's not a ' crowd ' , those are RUSH FANS !!!!! 🤟👏🤟👏☝️ 👍🏿👍🏽👍✌🖖🍁🌻💛💙🇺🇦
That drum kit is actually 2 drum kits.At a certain spot in the show the stand turns around and he plays the second drum kit.
Fun watching along with your first listen. This instrumental was a great suggestion for you to react to.
The 3 shows sold more tickets than any Rush show ever (Rush played The Gorge Amphitheater in Washington state to about 25K fans in 1997)... the Porto Alegre show sold 30K tickets... the Sao Paulo show sold 60K... and the final night in Rio was 40K 😲
Neil Peart's drum kit was a 360 degree kit... he would alternate on it during his concert drum solo - a highlight of every Rush show.
That show was in Brazil
Rock in Rio, great show from Rush
