It's not just intended as a Morse Code. Old school aviation navigation uses radio transmitters at the airports and around them at certain distances. The marker actually transmits the Morse code of the airport call sign. Prior to the writing of the song, one or more (I don't recall) of the members were into flying and taking lessons and would listen to the marker signal when flying into the airport.

Amber, if you like lyrics than Rush is the band for you. The Drummer (Neil Pert), who writes most of their lyrics is well know for his great lyrics. Always have the lyrics close by when reacting you Rush. 'Subdivisions' should be your next song since Rob works in the school system and it's a song every teenager can relate to. Then 'Tom Sawyer'.
The members of Rush consists of: Geddy Lee - bass, keyboards and lead vocals Alex Lifeson - guitar Neil Peart - drums and percussion Edit: the pronunciation of Geddy Lee's name is that it rhymes with "Teddy" It was a mimicry of the pronunciation of Lee's birth name of "Gary" which would come out as "Geddy" due his mother's thick Polish accent
When the crowd sings along to a song without any words you know the band must be onto something! I love your guys stuff and I appreciate your channel. It is wonderful to hear the music that I know and love through a different set of years and a different cultural perspective. Thank you for posting.
Rush were a perfect storm, musically: three master musicians on the same wavelength in the right place and time to help shape progressive rock as it emerged in the late 60s and early 70s, and probably inspired more bands after them than anyone else.
@@timflavin7090 I haven't forgotten John Rutsey. Rutsey definitely played his part in bringing the the three of them together. Rush wouldn't be Rush without Neil joining the band. We will never know what Rush would have been with Rutsey, but we know from interviews with Alex and Geddy that musically, they were not on the same page. Rutsey was influenced more by straight Rock, while Alex and Geddy were more influenced by progressive rock (Bad Company vs Yes) With all that said, Rush wouldn't have had any years without Rutsey, but without Neil, Rush wouldn't have made it through their first US tour. Anthem was written by Alex before Rutsey left the band and he just wasn't into being that active of a drummer. ' We can walk our road together If our goals are all the same We can run alone and free If we pursue a different aim'
OMG!!! RUSH!!! Yay.. love, Love , LOVE Rush. It just saddens me everytime I hear them now, knowing I won't be able to see them perform live again. Still blessed for the Many times I was able to. Rest in Peace Neil aka the Professor. Percussionist/Lyricist.
She needs to hear red barchetta for lyrics, a song about a time when gas powered cars are banned and a kid visits his uncles farm and sneaks uncles car for a illegal cruise. Excellent story telling as well as prophetic seeing it was written in the 80's! You will love it!
R.I.P. master Peart😭💔 Hard to believe that there is ONLY 3 people in it! They are an influence for so many musicians it's insane! They don't have a rabbit hole to go down, they have an ABYSS of songs!!!!💓💓💓💓
I can’t believe someone hasn’t heard of Rush! I’m 23 and have heard Rush most of my life. You’re in for a treat. Especially the music they did in the 70s
This is, bar none, the best live performance I've ever seen. The crowd is singing along to an instrumental. Just think on that. How lit is a show that hundreds of thousands of fans are singing along to an instrumental... Just amazing.
#1 Best Live Performance 'YYZ' Rush in Rio. #2 Pink Floyd 'Comfortably Numb' 1994 Pulse Concert. #3 Steven Wilson 'Luminol' Royal Albert Hall. Food for thought. Of course all the rest of the best live performances are every Rush concert ever attended.
They created a fan base that was like "family" that covered over four decades. Imagine seeing your favorite artist WELL over 100 times. They never flaunted their egos, and yet they were all masters of their insturments. There was just something different about being a fan. Too much to say.....
I'm with you. Been a fan since I was 8, first concert was the Permanent Waves tour and saw them numerous times (I'm in the over 100 club too). Glad you found them and enjoy the music. Peace.
This song is one of their few instrumentals...YYZ is the airport code for Toronto...that they loved coming home to after being on the road!! And the man you liked is none other than Geddy Lee, master of the bass and keys...those guys KNOW how to multitask !!
I've followed Rush for a very long time and they're a band that got consistently better as musicians as they aged. Their musical abilities aged like fine wine!
@@gdenny6858 I am a Rush Fan knew about the Plywood. However the way its casually inserted like 'yes Plywood is an instrument, how could you not know has killed me in laughter and some what sorrow. Never again will we have a Man like Neil who's going to just say yep Plywood is an instrument.
My favorite band of all time, by far. No one even comes close. 3 master musicians, great songs, intelligent lyrics, you name it. You can’t go wrong in their catalog.
Rush is amazing and it is disbelieving that there are only 3 members in the band. I would definitely recommend their songs Tom Sawyer, Spirit of the Radio, Limelight, 2112, and Working man.
Great reaction guys ... you need to hear more of them ...can I suggest their song Tom Sawyer next ? (they do sing as well) 3 musicians that sound like more .. at the top of their game. The guy with the bass guitar that also plays the keys also does the singing on most of their songs. His name is Geddy lee. Their drummer is Neil peart, considered by many to be the best drummer ever.
YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush's hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport.
I'm so glad to see young people rediscovering bands that were popular long before they were born. Thanks for this video! I've been a Rush fan since 1977, but I also like lot of artists who play jazz, fusion, old school big band, classical, reggae, ambient, rap, pop, and any of the 31 flavors of metal. Music is the universal language.
Rush is a great group, who are in the R&R Hall of Fame, so they have a bunch of incredible songs, almost all of which have lyrics. Great instrumental by them. You should definitely react to their huge hit "Tom Sawyer" or "The Spirit of Radio" next. You will NOT be disappointed.
RUSH are rock Gods. I saw them in concert twice and they were AMAZING musicians. Neil Peart is the greatest drummer EVER. He passed away from cancer recently, and the fandom was devastated. Alex Lifeson is the guitarist and Geddy Lee is the bass and keyboard player, and lead singer. ("Geddy" is really "Gary," but his mother had a very strong European accent, which sounded like "Geddy.") Their biggest hit is "Tom Sawyer," but there are so many that are great. "Spirit of Radio" and "Flight by Night" are "must listens." CHEERS!
@@TheDivergentDrummer I actually really love his solo at the Buddy Rich memorial. Because he looks happy to be there. And Buddy's band, towards the end, are all smiles watching him do his thing. Frankfurt is the favorite though.
I saw Rush three times in the 80's. Awesome concerts. Hard to believe only 3 guys make all that music. They are also in the rock and roll hall of fame. RIP Neil.
I saw them 3years in a row, 77, 78, and 79. They had a bit of a different sound back then. Each concert ended with, “Attention all planets of the Solar Federation, we hare assumed control”.
Best ever live performance is Xanadu (Exit Stage Left 1981) From RUSH. To watch 3 men play so many instruments in a song is mind blowing. The drummer uses just about everything on his kit, the Bass player plays bass, synth, floor synth and sings all at once. And poor Alex only gets to play double neck guitar and floor synth (hahaha). It has words...
Getty Lee is the bass player...also the keyboard player and singer. He has a very unique voice. The drummer was a PHD in percussion from Juliard who recently passed away. R.I.P. Neil Pert🤟 Subdivisions...
Not to be that guy, but they were all high school dropouts. No advanced degrees for any of them. It’s possible Neil was granted an honorary doctorate, but none of them have actual degrees.
YYZ is the airport code for Lester B Pearson - Toronto International Airport. The Drums and the Bass are playing Y-Y-Z in Morse code / This is instrumental BTW
Vocals just weren't needed! "YYZ" is the Aviation Code for the main airport in Toronto - home for the band (at least when the song was written). That code is broadcast by the airport using Morse Code - and the beginning part of the song is derivative of that Morse Code for "YYZ"! The essence of the song is the band's joy and relief at getting home after a long tour!
They both still live in Toronto. I grew up 2 blocks away from Geddy lee in the east end "beaches" area of Toronto in the 70's and 80's, and was his paperboy as a kid. I'm 55 now
It just goes to show that you don't need a voice when you're so good, you can make your instruments talk. These guys were the best. I miss them sorely. RIP Mr. Peart.
I remember Geddy's account of Rio, "It was our first time in Brszil, so we weren't sure if anyone would show up, then there was a huge crowd meeting us at the airport."

Always have the lyrics close by when reacting you Rush. 'Subdivisions' should be your next song since Rob works in the school system and it's a song every teenager can relate to. Then 'Tom Sawyer'.
Can't go wrong with "Subdivisions", Tom Sawyer", or , indeed, "Spirit of Radio". Mega-powerful songs no one has ever said "That's boring" to.
Any suggestion is going to be good to great but with the schooling connection I agree that Subdivisions would be a great next listen. 👍
The lyrics for Rush are masterpieces. No kidding. Poetry. So many good songs with such deep lyrics. Try Freewill next !
He was a prolific reader. Seriously - who writes lyrics based on the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, or Ayn Rand other than a reader?
wheels within wheels in a spiral array, a pattern so grand and complex........
The members of Rush consists of:
Geddy Lee - bass, keyboards and lead vocals
Alex Lifeson - guitar
Neil Peart - drums and percussion
Edit: the pronunciation of Geddy Lee's name is that it rhymes with "Teddy"
It was a mimicry of the pronunciation of Lee's birth name of "Gary" which would come out as "Geddy" due his mother's thick Polish accent
And there are times that Geddy is playing a bass line, singing and using his feet to play keyboard lines. I'm not kidding.
And after each band member’s instruments should read “extraordinaire”...
And Neil wrote most, if not all, of their lyrics.
Also, "Red Sector A" is written specifically about Geddy's parents who were both Auschwitz survivors.
@@R2Zmedia I think it was his grandparents, but it's STILL a great song.
Neil Peart is often described as your favorite drummers favorite drummer!
YYZ is the airport code for Toronto where they are from. The initial rhythm is actually the Morse code for YYZ
When the crowd sings along to a song without any words you know the band must be onto something!
I love your guys stuff and I appreciate your channel. It is wonderful to hear the music that I know and love through a different set of years and a different cultural perspective. Thank you for posting.
Just keep going with Rush. Three of the most talented musicians to ever play.
Rush were a perfect storm, musically: three master musicians on the same wavelength in the right place and time to help shape progressive rock as it emerged in the late 60s and early 70s, and probably inspired more bands after them than anyone else.
Well said!!! A synchronicity. They were simply meant to be and fit together perfectly
You're forgetting Neil was the new guy, after John Rutsy, the original drummer left the band for health reasons
' We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim'
Nearly 50 years with the same three members. That's practically unheard of. Not only were they band mates, they were best friends.
OMG!!! RUSH!!! Yay.. love, Love , LOVE Rush. It just saddens me everytime I hear them now, knowing I won't be able to see them perform live again. Still blessed for the Many times I was able to. Rest in Peace Neil aka the Professor. Percussionist/Lyricist.
today is June 15, 2021. I heard a couple of weeks ago that Rush was putting out a new album. I think Neil laid down some drum tracks before he died.
YY "ZED" is the code for Toronto's Pearson Intl Airport.
Where Alex Lifeson (lead guitar) took private pilot lessons..
She needs to hear red barchetta for lyrics, a song about a time when gas powered cars are banned and a kid visits his uncles farm and sneaks uncles car for a illegal cruise. Excellent story telling as well as prophetic seeing it was written in the 80's! You will love it!
R.I.P. master Peart😭💔
Hard to believe that there is ONLY 3 people in it!
You’ve been introduced to the best band to ever walk the planet. Welcome to the family!
Most musicians can’t even believe there are only 3 guys.
I went to one of their last concerts on May 30th, one day before my 10th birthday.
Rush was my favorite band, I still listen to their songs today.
I love seeing young people discovering the great music we grew up with. It was an amazing time for music.
Agreed 100%
This is, bar none, the best live performance I've ever seen. The crowd is singing along to an instrumental. Just think on that. How lit is a show that hundreds of thousands of fans are singing along to an instrumental... Just amazing.
#1 Best Live Performance
'YYZ' Rush in Rio.
#2 Pink Floyd 'Comfortably Numb' 1994 Pulse Concert.
#3 Steven Wilson 'Luminol'
Royal Albert Hall.
Food for thought.
Of course all the rest of
the best live performances
are every Rush concert ever attended.
Limelight, Tom Sawyer, the whole 2112 album, and on and on.
gotta love a band that can get 60,000 people to sing along to an INSTRUMENTAL.
Best comment!!
3 most talented rock musicians ever. Been blessed to have seen them live 3 times 👍🏻
They created a fan base that was like "family" that covered over four decades. Imagine seeing your favorite artist WELL over 100 times. They never flaunted their egos, and yet they were all masters of their insturments. There was just something different about being a fan. Too much to say.....
Very true, I've only seen Rush 5 times but I met Geddy backstage at one show
I'm with you. Been a fan since I was 8, first concert was the Permanent Waves tour and saw them numerous times (I'm in the over 100 club too). Glad you found them and enjoy the music. Peace.
Fan since hearing 2112 in 78. Only got to see them once in Wembley in 2005. Treasured memories.
not to mention they put on one helluva show!
I never had the pleasure of seeing them live.
I wanna see Rob freak out when he see's Geddy and Alex playing their double neck set up's , with Geddy still hitting the keyboards :P
And Alex and Geddy also play Taurus pedal synthesizers with their feet on XANADU, as well
3 brilliant musicians operating at the pinnacle of their powers...for so long they brought it to us all. Long live RUSH!
How many Drums does Neil have?
All of them.
For the moving pictures tour he had a 125 piece set including bell trees wind chimes and plywood (Yes he plays plywood )
Seventy eleven
All of them. 😉
@@jlufton9076 I have been a Rush fan since the 70s, I've seen them 5 times, even met Geddy! Rush is a way of life!
My favorite band of all time, by far. No one even comes close. 3 master musicians, great songs, intelligent lyrics, you name it. You can’t go wrong in their catalog.
My favorite band .saw them live 20 times! Lots of awesome music that you HAVE to react to
The opening of the song is YYZ in Morse Code. It's the airport designation for the Toronto airport.
Geddy(bass, vocal, keyboards) also maintains bass lines with foot pedals while playing keyboards. Tip of the Rush iceberg.
Rush is amazing and it is disbelieving that there are only 3 members in the band. I would definitely recommend their songs Tom Sawyer, Spirit of the Radio, Limelight, 2112, and Working man.
and lets not forget..."The Necromancer" from their Caress of Steel Album!!!!
Witch Hunt. Don't forget Witch Hunt.
Geddy Lee: The Physical Personification of Multitasking.
The most under rated guitar play EVER....
YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush's hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport.
Rush,.. a perfect rabbit hole to climb into for great music, lyrics, amazingly put out by three guys.
What a song...what a performance to pick as your introduction to 𝓡𝓤𝓢𝓗
Well... if you like lyrics... get ready for the Rush ride! They have the deepest lyrics out there!
Rest in peace, professor. The world is less every day without you. Great song. Was lucky enough to have seen them twice.
The drummer Neil Peart wrote the lyrics which are very philosophical and thought provoking...very sad when he died early last year :(
I keep saying people need to check out his Frankfurt solo, or "Anatomy of a drum solo", but sadly, no one ever listens....
Affectionately referred to as the thinking man's rock band.
@@TheDivergentDrummer I actually really love his solo at the Buddy Rich memorial. Because he looks happy to be there. And Buddy's band, towards the end, are all smiles watching him do his thing. Frankfurt is the favorite though.
Even if you ignore his drumming he was a great man and thinker. The world is not as interesting without him.
I don't usually cry when celebs die. I cried uncontrollably upon hearing of Neil's death. I've loved him and RUSH since I was a child. I'm 54 now.
Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Subdivisions are Rush songs with great lyrics.
Also cool about this crowd: They’re actually singing along with the tones of the music. Their “whoas” track the melody of the song.
Best ever live performance is
Xanadu (Exit Stage Left 1981)
From RUSH.
To watch 3 men play so many instruments in a song is mind blowing. The drummer uses just about everything on his kit, the Bass player plays bass, synth, floor synth and sings all at once. And poor Alex only gets to play double neck guitar and floor synth (hahaha). It has words...
"HOW DO THEY EVEN DO THAT?!"
People have been asking that for over 40 years.
3 of the best musicians in the world...in ANY genre. Enjoy the world of Rush!
The Lyricist was the percussionist, and his lyrics throughout his career were epic! You have to look into their volumn of albumns!
Getty Lee is the bass player...also the keyboard player and singer. He has a very unique voice. The drummer was a PHD in percussion from Juliard who recently passed away. R.I.P. Neil Pert🤟 Subdivisions...
I think you are already ready for Xanadu live from Exit Stage Left.
Geddy
R.I.P. Professor - the greatest to ever bash the skins.
Not to be that guy, but they were all high school dropouts. No advanced degrees for any of them. It’s possible Neil was granted an honorary doctorate, but none of them have actual degrees.
@@Bass17yl true
BUT,
PHDS HAVE BEEN AWARDED TO OTHERS FOR STUDYS OF THEIR WORK
SO, THEIR HONORARY DEGREES ARE WELL WELL EARNED
"RUSH" is one of the most talented bands ever!! Ya'll need to check out MORE of them, you won't be disappointed!! ROCK ON!!
YYZ is the airport code for Lester B Pearson - Toronto International Airport. The Drums and the Bass are playing Y-Y-Z in Morse code / This is instrumental BTW
Also in Canadian it is Why Why ZED
You left out the country of Brazil for backups.....gotta give them their due!
@@billboth6572 no its Buddy Buddy Guy
YYZ is the airport code for the Toronto airport. The opening salvo of this song is Morse Code for Y-Y-Z.
When the audience collectively sings the actual music with no words, you know they’re good.
Finally I've been begging people to do a rush song three man band most extraordinary band at that
Neil Peart on the drums, Alex Lifeson Guitar, Getty Lee on base Guitar and keyboard
My favorite Rush song of all time and I never knew that!!! Thank you very much!!!
They both still live in Toronto. I grew up 2 blocks away from Geddy lee in the east end "beaches" area of Toronto in the 70's and 80's, and was his paperboy as a kid. I'm 55 now
RUSH !!! One of the most creative talented original bands that has ever, or will ever exist!! Pure over the top musical masters of their ctaft!!
Check out Neil Peart's (R.I.P.) drum solo from Frankfurt Germany INCREDIBLE! Also check out Tom Sawyer, Spirit of Radio, Red Barchetta, just to name a few. But, be careful the RUSH rabbit hole is deep!
1980 or 81.. yep.... YYZ a code of something... Rush one o the best Heavy Metal's! thank you guys!
I am so glad you pulled this version- I requested it! They were in Rio for the first time ever and were just hoping the crowd would know who they were. I think they did!
19 albums, 40 million sales, 3 guys who just love making music with each other.
I mean, how cool is it that a song without lyrics is being sung by 50,000+ Rush fanatics.
