Before the Rio crowd, no one ever sang live in concert during YYZ. What you saw was the first time a crowd sang during YYZ. You used to sit back and watch the musical prowess of these three guys take place. However on the future tours, when YYZ was played, all the crowds started singing. However, they never got to the fervor nor intensity of the Brazilian crowd. This was at the end of the Vapor Trails tour. The band was burnt out with a couple of more shows left to perform in South America. The band had never performed in S. America before and had many unforeseen logistical issues happen which added to the weariness. The band admitted in later interviews that when the crowd started singing they almost stopped due to the momentarily loss of focus but they kept playing on and the crowd was fueling them while re-energizing them at the same time. Go watch the documentary "The Boys In Brazil" that is included on the "Rush in Rio" DVD.
Ya, it’s Rio BUT there was another element to why they went completely nuts with this song. Remember that this song was big a generation before most of these kids! The timing for this was shortly after Guitar Hero II featured RUSH YYZ as essentially the pinnacle of your guitar hero abilities! Once you were capable of conquering YYZ, YOU WERE A GUITAR HERO GOD!!! So, what you’re seeing here, on top of a sincere appreciation of the song, was an in person opportunity to see the GODS OF GUITAR HERO IN PERSON!! Hence kids freeking out over a 20 year old song! Gotta love it!!
Geddy Lee was the only bassists considered to replace Christopher Squire when Yes was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Mainly because of his talent also because the massive influence Yes had on Rush.
There was no better band to see live than Rush. After my first show, I was addicted. 😂 I stopped counting at my 13th Rush show. Unfortunately, Neil was taken from us too early. I wish that wasn't the case. Not for me. But for everyone that's just now discovering them and will never have the chance to experience them live.
And you would have lost your hearing for 3 days like i did back in the 80's at Madison Square Garden. I was 18-19 years old and it was my first concert at the Square. Oh my god it was off the chain. I rocked out hard that night with my friends. I am now 61, I still go to concert's and I would rock out to Rush today just like I did back then. I miss Neil. When he passed away, I cried for 3 days. So many memories. Neil was and had a brilliant mind. you should read or listen to some of his books they are awesome. He was a brilliant and passionate writer and storyteller. I sometimes go back and listen to his e-book stories just to hear his voice. The good thing is these guys will always be with us all we have to do is press play. Keep this good music alive fellas and thanks for the reactions.🥰
Fun Fact: YYZ is the airport code for Pearson International Airport, in Toronto, Ontario Canada - Rush's hometown. The rhythm played on the cymbals to start the song is the morse code for the letters Y-Y-Z. Saw Rush play at Maple Leaf Gardens (former/original home to the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs) for the last/homecoming show of the Counterparts Tour. Absolutely epic when the announcer said, ... "Toronto, will you please welcome HOME, RUSH!!!!".
I was at that show and I can assure you that I can't express what this RUSH show was like. It's unspeakable! The show lasted 3 hours and when it ended, a big storm hit and everyone was happily raining.
“The drummer” is The Professor. He was the second drummer for the band. Even though he played with them for over 40 years, they still called him “the new guy”.
Rush fans are another level! In the 80’s, the crowds were mostly aspiring musicians and kinda music nerds. They got airplay, but we’re not as universally accepted like some other pop rock acts. Had the pleasure of seeing them 9 times through the 80’s and 90’s, and the crowds got more diverse as time passed. To the point that on the last tour, you had fans from 3 generations from one family in the audience!! And yes, fans singing an instrumental is quite unusual at any other show, but normal for them.😜
You guys are on fire again this morning, you're gonna love this performance, especially the crowd singing along to an instrumental. Keep rocking - much love from Canada.
I was also completely stunned the first time I saw this. The crowd is singing along to an instrumental, and I can’t think of any other band who would have something similar happen.
😂 Back to mess with the Algorithm and toss 🏎️🚓🚓 'Red Barchetta' out there! 😏 Live (1981) or Audio doesn't matter. 🤗 Super excited you now know 😏 what we all know! 🥰 Rush is cool and will always bring you "back to the groove"... 😌🐰
A friend had to learn jazz off beat drumming to play Rush. He played rock drums for 2o yrs before expanding to a band like Rush. Hey check Steely Dan. The band musicians listen to when they get home.
There was a decade when in southern Ontario you could turn on the radio and you could hear Rush at anytime on at least one station. Use to run into Geddy and Alex on their walks all the time, real fine gentlemen. 🙏🍁
Awesome book. I read that during the intermission Geddy was trying to bid on baseball memorabilia online and lost out and he was more upset about that then focusing on playing the bass during some songs.
🤗 Stadium crowds also do an 'Invisible Air Wave' clap during The Spirit of Radio! 😚 Ged is so cute leading us along in his "Awww shucks. We're glad you like us" way. Sometimes when they would pan to his face on a monitor, he looks like he still can't believe him & his best friends are headlining. Same look he had opening for Kiss decades ago! 🥰 So Ged. 😏 Dirk, on the other hand, is "the naughty one". 😏 I miss 'Dirk'..... 😂🐰
This concert is the only way to react to Rush playing YYZ, I would’ve loved to of been there. What a wonderful crowd… this is proof positive why rush didn’t need to write songs at the record companies wanted them to make.. and the reason why they were working band for 5+ decades❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
I was there !😊 80000 people who LOVE Rush , seeing them for the first time in the biggest soccer Stadium of the world and EVERY single people there, sang together an instrumental song. It was goosebumps on steroids...😅 Outside the US then Rush was THE Band😌👍
One thing that always fascinated me about this performance is the way the crowd is reacting as the sound wave washes over them. They are jumping to the beat as it reaches them, it looks like ripples on a pond
Love this review and your other reviews. Saw Rush the first time at age 14 in early 1976, the last time in 2012 at age 51. An epic experience over the years. I appreciate reliving the old emotions thru your new ones.
These guys are amazing live. I was fortunate enough to see them 3 times. I have been to countless concerts in the 70s and 80s. Hands down the best live show you will see
This show was on November 23, 2002 here in Brazil. This recording was in Maracana-Rio de Janeiro. 40 thousand people. First show I went to alone in my life. I received this show as a birthday present. I cry just remembering every moment of this show.
Yep! That pretty much says it all doesn't it! Your reaction is how I felt the first dozen times I viewed this performance! "Natural Science," from this same concert, is a BANGER! 😄
this was Rush's first time playing in Brazil.. I don't remember exactly but in just a few shows they played to hundreds of thousands of people... and those fans are 100% into it! This is an amazing live performance!
Two days previously to this concert in Rio (there were sixty thousand people there) they played in São Paulo for eighty thousand people. Tehy played also in Porto Alegre but I don't remember how many people were there, but their biggest audience was in São Paulo.
Interesting story from a Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame interview that I saw. Chuck D (before Public Enemy was famous) had a friend who did security at the The Great Western Forum in Inglewood back in the early 80's and used to get him into concerts for free. One night, his friend got him into see Rush, and he watched from the back. Chuck said in the interview that he wasn't necessarily into Rush's music, but he was blown away by how mesmerized the crowd was and how the crowd knew every beat to every song. He said that he was really influenced by Rush's showmanship and musicianship that he saw that night and it stuck with him as he navigated throughout his also successful career.
I saw them once live @ Jones Beach theater a few years before they called it quits! They have a cult like following! Awesome live show legendary drummer Neil Pert did a light show with his drums! Amazing ❤
Rush's instrumentals are just the boys jamming out and showing what they can do, all three soloing at the same time and all are exercises in indulgence. This is my second favorite behind La Villa Strangiato wich imo is the greatest rock instrumental ever performed.
I was there, well, almost. I went to the Porto Alegre show a couple days before. It was the same, people singing to an instrumental music such as YYZ. Best concert of my life.
The one thing that is often overlooked. For the members of RUSH, it was always about the fans. There were no egos, they came out every night and gave 110%. They worked long and hard to build a huge following. For the majority of their careers they were overlooked. Panned by critics but adored by those who got it. They are only now finally getting the recognition they deserved. They are the nicest three guys you'll every meet, and they stayed best friends all through the years. Sadly Neil has left us, but he left a lasting mark on rock and roll forever. I recommend your next listen should be Neil Peart Live in Frankfurt (Drum solo).
I’m glad to say "I told you so!". That’s such a great instrumental performance. The boys were feeding off the great energy of the crowd that night and the crowd was loving every minute of it. I saw a few Rush shows but never with a crowd like that.
Great seeing this again. I would love it if you guys woukd do more Rush. A couple of suggestions Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Caravan from the Time Machine Tour
Glad to see that you guys came back to Rush!! Great reaction!! These three guys are musical virtuosos It's a rabbit hole for sure..Shout out from the old metal head from Detroit..Peace and love..
Yo Bruhs! I was in São Paulo the day before this show and that was the band's public record with 60,000 people. In this one there were 40k singing and jumping madly. Peace and love.
Despite being nearly 70 years old and being off the stage for seven years, they played a ripping version of this at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute with Danny Carey filling in on drums.
Actually, he did not catch the drumstick, he missed it but you never saw him grab the other one. They have this exact version just with a drum cam. That's the one you want to watch
That song was like the final Boss in Guitar hero -
Before the Rio crowd, no one ever sang live in concert during YYZ. What you saw was the first time a crowd sang during YYZ. RUSH IS THE BEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME
There’s nothing like 60,000 crazy South American Rush fans singing along to a instrumental.🔥👏
60 was in São Paulo.
And i was one of them
@@RafaelLima-hg8kz Lucky guy !!!! 👍👍👍👍
60,000 Enthusiastic Rush fans
That's Rio, dude !
When this was filmed in 2003, Neil the drummer was 51, Alex the guitarist was 50 and Geddy the bassist was also 50.
80,000 fans at that concert in Brazil!
Neil was born in September of 1952. Geddy was born in July of 1953. Alex was born in August of 1953.
Ya, it’s Rio BUT there was another element to why they went completely nuts with this song. Remember that this song was big a generation before most of these kids! An entire stadium full of people losing their minds at three dudes jamming. That's awesome
Geddy Lee was the only bassists considered to replace Christopher Squire when Yes was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Mainly because of his talent also because the massive influence Yes had on Rush.
I LOVE their Album Fly by Night.
The only instrumental sing along in rock history?
Perhaps the most epic concert ever. ❤
Geddy is always voted top 3, usually number 1, bass player. He’s a bad man!
Who needs lyrics when you're so good the crowd sings along with the instruments.
Best crowd ever!
You gotta give the props when the props are due! A whole stadium singing along an instrumental!
Off the charts 👋👏👏👏🔥🔥
Music lovers! In jazz band friends said i had fun. Signed, music lover.
My goto chillin tune. Thank you, Rush and Airplay Beats. Amazun' !
Simply the best !!! 😎🎸
There was no better band to see live than Rush. After my first show, I was addicted. 😂 I stopped counting at my 13th Rush show. Unfortunately, Neil was taken from us too early. South America loves rock and metal!
They were playing around 3 hrs at this stage of their careers! For 3 guys in their 50’s? Pretty solid!
They killed!
The live version from the album Exit, Stage Left (audio only) has an incredible drum solo by Neil Peart in it!
Arguably the best 3 man band ever in any genre of music.
That Brazilian crowd are incredible. Imagine being in the middle of that. Fabulous.
Hahaha, I love how you two Groove mans....

If you listen closely, you'll notice that Geddy's opening bass riff is also YYZ in Morse Code.
Yup, that too.
glad i got to see them live.
have to check out
Working Man. Limelight,
Closer to the Heart.

Yup , indeed and don't forget YVR,YYC,YEG,YUL.
RUSH!!! The best 3-man band Ever!!! AKA Holy Trinity!! 3 Masters of their Instruments.
😅ahhhh my boys!!!!
And thats how its done!!!❤🎼🎵🎸
Canada here too! YYZ is the only instrumental that you can hum along to lol
I was at that show and I can assure you that I can't express what this RUSH show was like. It's unspeakable! The show lasted 3 hours and when it ended, a big storm hit and everyone was happily raining.
My contry my state!! My uncle and my daddy was in that show

legendary..they aren't known as The Holy Triumvirate for no reason! So dope
You guys are on fire again this morning, you're gonna love this performance, especially the crowd singing along to an instrumental. Keep rocking - much love from Canada.
By far the best YYZ concert, I would’ve loved to of been there.
They are not "on fire" if they call the greatest drummer ever "the older guy) really?? Smh..
When I saw this pop up I could not click fast enough because I knew you guys were gonna love it!
RUSH has been my band since I heard my older brothers Rush album called Moving Pictures at 9years old.ROCK!😀
Rush is crazy good live, best I have ever seen live
I was also completely stunned the first time I saw this. The crowd is singing along to an instrumental, and I can’t think of any other band who would have something similar happen.

80,000 per Geddys biography available now on Amazon.. a must read. Rest in peace Neil Peart we miss you dearly!

Just pure talent and skill. And an appreciative audience...that loves the moment.
One of the greatest bands of-all time . 65K fans singing a rhythm , there are no lyrics . Canada can be proud.
love what you said, "one for the ages"
3 Monster musicians+ 40,000+ singers = 🔥🔥🔥
😁 🎸🥁🎸
Every one shines in this one. What a huge sound for a three piece band!
Try Rush Hemispheres, the whole album, one song at a time. 👍 trust me!
First time Rush played in Brasil and not til the end of their career. Watch the documentary of this tour. Rush was floored by the fanaticism.
The drum set opens up by latch and hinges for entry.
This is awesome to watch. And to listen to. Great musicians. Great video.

The drummer,Neil Peart is the goat and writes the lyrics. Best band ever!
Musicianship is next level always.... 8).
Always love to hear the crowd SINGING an instrumental. Amazing performance by RUSH.

This is probably the only time I've really wished I could of been in that crowd to experience that. It was a fucking vibe
These guys are amazing live. I was fortunate enough to see them 3 times.
I have been to countless concerts in the 70s and 80s.
Hands down the best live show you will see
One of a kind show.
Amazing instrumental. 😎
“If Neil Peart isn’t your favorite drummer, he’s your favorite drummer’s favorite.” When you do an instrumental, and the crowd sings along…
This show was on November 23, 2002 here in Brazil. This recording was in Maracana-Rio de Janeiro. 40 thousand people. First show I went to alone in my life. I received this show as a birthday present. I cry just remembering every moment of this show.

A energia desse show é surreal.
💥🔥
Brazil ❤
It's sad as hell Neil passed.
The musicianship of these 3 is unreal..it's unmatched.
When a crowd of thousands is singing along to an instrumental, you know you're great.
The idea of the song came up while they were waiting for a plane at Toronto airport, it’s code is YYZ. It became the name of the song.
this was Rush's first time playing in Brazil.. I don't remember exactly but in just a few shows they played to hundreds of thousands of people... and those fans are 100% into it!

Thanks for taking a look of one of my favorites. 80's song. Moving Pictures album. Saw Rush at Allentown in 2010. Lights out.
I saw them once live @ Jones Beach theater a few years before they called it quits! They have a cult like following! Awesome live show legendary drummer Neil Pert did a light show with his drums! Amazing ❤
OMG!! you guys never disappoint, my husband going to lose it when he sees this. That was us crazy kids in that crowd back in the days 🤟🤪

@@AirplayBeats Thanks guys!! You have a great weekend also..Party on!!
Damn. That performance was Amazing.
Can't wait for you to get to Working Man - Live in Cleveland
3rd time, watching u 2 evolve (sonically)like we did truly warms the soul🔥🔥🫡
Brazilians know how to party. I can't imagine standing on a stage and seeing that crowd. Almost a touch scary lol. :)
Yo Bruhs! I was in São Paulo the day before this show and that was the band's public record with 60,000 people. In this one there were 40k singing and jumping madly. Peace and love.
Neil Peart on drums was just as awesome in this as he was when you saw him younger

"JACOB'S LADDER" AND "NATURAL SCIENCES" Are VERY good underrated tracks off the Permanent Waves album.
Wish you did the studio version but this is a popular performance.
I prefer seeing them live so you can appreciate the music just 3 people can make.
Greatest instrumental of all time!
Another great performance by RUSH in Rio. Red Barachetta would be a great reaction next.
