    Permanent Waves was my intro to Rush, I was 15 yrs old. At first I was a bit confused, i was just a metal head kid, but I played Spirit of Radio over and over again. As I delved deeper into tbe album I noticed the lyrics and tbe complexity started to grow on me. By tbe time I was immersed in Natural Science, the final track, I thought they were prophets. I decided that I had to become a professional drummer, and I had to learn every drum part from every Rush album. I did and I became a drummer, percussionist and a singer/ songwriter. I wholly blame Neil for this terrible, wonderful predicament..

    I was at this very show in Toronto, and it was a wonderful night! The setlist was superb, and it went in reverse chronology - newer to older - and the stage setup followed! Once we hit the early 80's/late 70's era, Neil's drum kit was even pared down. All this culminated in a finale of Working Man, where the stage was basically amps on 'school gym' chairs, as if they were playing in a school gym or church hall!
    This song was amazing live!!

    Salvo, I truly enjoy watching you as you discover more RUSH and other music. Rush was my very first concert that I ever attended at the age of 16 back in 1976, it was the All the World's a Stage tour and it changed my appreciation for music and after watching them live I immediately picked up my first Bass and started playing and trying to craft my playing to be like Geddy. I later went on to play in numerous bands as the bassist and lead vocalist. I still have never gotten to the proficient level that Geddy so remarkably has accomplished but Rush still to this day remains my inspiration and reason to continually hone my craft. I appreciate your enthusiasm when you watch them and other talented bands and your quest for knowledge in the musical realm. Keep doing what you do! I'd love to sit down and have a conversation with you. You seem like a very genuine and exceptional person. ROCK ON!

    What a mood this song creates. Loved the mix. There is a video that goes with the studio version, which I believe, was backdropped in this concert. Amazing how close to the studio version (and perhaps better). I saw the concert debut of this song 3 days after it was released (according to Setlist FM) on the Permanent Waves Tour. The only time I ever saw Rush. After that they probably didn't play many venues that small. Thank you Salvo G. & Stick Hits.❤'d it!

    I was at the Friday show in Toronto which is probably the show this video captures. An amazing band. Jacob's Ladder has so many time signature changes which makes it very complex. The last part is in 13 or alternating 6-7 depending on how you want to count it.

    Saw this on original Permanent Waves tour. In person. Nothing bad but back then Rush was even better. 8 tracks gave way to cassette tapes. Mix tapes always had Rush dominating. I had a huge vinyl collection making tapes for my car. And for friends. This is in an era Triumph and April Wine are opening acts for Rush. They were so fantastic we were sure Rush was going to fall down as headliner. Nope. Rush blew them away. And Triumph and April Wine would blow the doors off anyone live performance. Except Rush. And SRV. Triumph gets lost in the shuffle. But Rush in 80's live was actually life changing. Stunning.

    Rush prides themselves on delivering the studio version or better live. There might be some minor differences in the musicality and while Geddy's vocals on this video is still awesome (35 years later), it's to be expected his range isn't what it used to be. More or less I would say this performance is at par with the studio version.

    • @StickHits
      @StickHits Год назад

      As a drummer myself I actually think ASOH features Neil's best pro-shot drum solo. He was actually very sick in Frankfurt, and talks about barely being able to get through the show in his book Roadshow, so I don't think it is his most impressive from a technical standpoint. Because it was the first to be shot in HD and one of the earliest Neil videos on RUclips, it got a ton of views early on, so I think that is the biggest factor in it becoming so popular.

    As a 45 year RUSH diehard having first seen them warming up for BOC in 1978, Permanent Waves is my favorite album. There are many challengers though. Natural Science is my fave RUSH tune but Jacob's Ladder adds a completely awesome changeup with it's darkness & straight forward driving force. Driving in your car to SPIRIT OF RADIO, down by the sea with NATURAL SCIENCE or soaring through the clouds with this one, RUSH always paints a picture.

    I saw them perform this twice: in 1980 on the Permanent Waves tour, and in 2015 on the R40 tour.
    I had already seen Rush 3 times by 1980 so I knew they didn't shy away from playing their most challenging music live.
    Because of all the odd time signatures in Jacob's Ladder, the song is a beast. And I have always sort of wondered "where THE HELL did they come up with that one!?"
    Then when they played it in 2015, it got the biggest applause from the crowd (The Palace at Auburn Hills, MI) for the whole night.
    My eyes leaked a little bit.

    It's not even funny..how good this is. There will never be another RUSH. Unmatched. Best band to ever walk this planet. Rush forever..

      If there was video of footage of any performance from the only other tour (Can't remember if they played it on MP tour, if so that would be three total tour performances) they played it on, it would definitely be on my channel. I have been told by a reliable source that pro-shot footage of a PW show this actually exists though, and we may actually get it! But I also think this performance was one of if not the best performance on R40, and possible the best-shot Rush footage ever with the best lighting and laser effects they ever featured. So, I think it's well worth watching.
