Rush doesn't write songs, they write scores. The music is so much more than notes and sound,...its animated, its always moving and bringing you... its alive and telling a story.
I think the best SOUNDING version of this song is on Exit...Stage Left. The entire album is an endorphin brain trip. Please search and enjoy that album!!
A lot of people hate Geddy Lees voice but if they would listen to Xanadu and really, all of their music they would see that his voice is pretty damn amazing.
Marc Sorensen Great comment, Marc. And as much as I love Geddy, he even annoys ME a bit when he’s having an off day in concert. But he has done some great vocal performances in studio, Xanadu being one of them.
When I see them play live it instantly raises the hair on my arms. They were one of the best if not the best band that ever hit the face of this earth! Closest to perfection. They were masters of the art of music.
Dude......... Studio Version. Try it. Studio Version. I think I speak for just about everyone on the Fing planet when I say.... crank the STUDIO VERSION!!!!! Oh hell yeah!!!!!!!!!
I got introduced to Permanent Waves back in 1984. While visiting friends of my parents in Miami, Florida, I used to hang out with their youngest son. In his car (which he called The Beast) he had a tape deck which only worked when sticking a chop stick into it. The tape that was playing 24/7 was Permanent Waves. It became the soundtrack of this happy summer. I had never heard of this band before but the moment I got back home to Germany I bought the album. I'm a Rush fan ever since. Lucky me was able to see them live one time.
I am so glad you have discovered the “magic that is RUSH”!! I was at this very show. It was they’re 40th anniversary tour & sadly theiir last tour. My husband & I are enormous fans. We followed them across the US & Canada for the last 3 tours. We did 8 shows in the 2010 & 2011 TM tour, 9 shows on the 2012 & 2013 Clockwork Angels tour & 12 shows on the 2015 R40 tour. They will forever be the ONLY band I listen to. Thanks for your awesome videos. Welcome to the “Rush family”. 😃😃
I have been a Rush fan since my first year of high school (that's age 13-14 for our international friends...I'm in the U.S. [near New Orleans, Louisiana]). As a young drummer I just fell in love with them immediately. That time frame was about 2 years before their album "Roll the Bones" which came out in 1991, and I've been an avid fan and follower since (shit...I'm really getting old now). I have every album (except for a few of the more-recently released live collections). Rush has been one of those bands (of which there are very few) that you can ALWAYS depend on to bring you great new music, never-getting-old unforgettable masterpieces, all of which are played perfectly every time during their live shows to crowds made up of 2 and 3 (and perhaps even 4) generations of fans experiencing them together. At every show you will see kids under the age of 10 attending alongside their 35 year old fathers, and their 65 year old grandfathers, and EVERYONE is excited, happy and full of energy which is such a wonderful thing to behold. I have seen Rush play live 6 times (in 3 different cities) and I'm eternally sad that I will most likely never get to see them for a 7th or 8th time. I would see them 15 more times if I could. Rush is just so unique and special. Ruben, I know this is an old video, but I just came across your channel today and I just wanted to say that I've enjoyed your videos thus far. You got yourself a new subscriber, and I look forward to seeing more of your progressive rock/metal reactions. Not just for your Rush reactions, but I'm interested in anything else you may throw at us. I'm hoping to get introduced to some great music I have never heard before too. Much peace & love, brother...God bless!
This and previous versions young and old versions of Jacobs Ladder are the best as the earlier vintage year offered such greatness ! Rush for world leadership!
Total bummer you missed out. I had the privilege of seeing them live 11 times. 2007 is still my favorite Rush show. They surprised me with the song choices and blew me away with the classics. Also, the girl I love was there for her first live Rush experience, and she too, was blown away. Lawn seats at Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix AZ.
Life long Rush fan ( first Rush album I purchased was Permanent Waves). The song that I always recommend first to newbies is "Freewill". Musically perfect, lyrically a masterpiece.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for not talking over the top of the song. You listened, then gave your opinion, some don't do that and have to give a running commentary, thank you for respecting the art.
I love watching someone react to a Rush song for the first time. Going on the journey that the music takes you on. So much fun to see your smile as you get into the music! Thanks for making your videos!
absolute Brilliance!!!! Not is such a HARD song to play!!! My God, My Drumming buddies say this song is so tough to play! Especially the final drum part coming out of the keyboard break. Man I am so fortunate I have seen them so many times I can't count, well I can, but, won't throw a number out.. No more now, Still in mourning over Neil! almost a year later!
rbrown0307 I've practically been begging him to do that one....we need to flood his line with that as a suggestion... and the studio version for better audio quality.
One underrated song from Rush that not many people talk about is Available Light. One of my favorites and it shows how easy Neil Peart can write lyrics bringing inanimate beings to life..like the old song The Trees. Check it out.
Bliss face. Ya get that when Rush is played. I was fortunate. The 1st concert I ever went to was Rush on the Moving Pictures tour in '81. Yes you do have a lot to catch up on. Of all things, Neil Peart's drum solo, from "Exit, stage left". That solo was to drummers, what Van Halen's "Eruption" was to guitarists. It changed everything. Many can emulate, few can create, break ground and inspire. There's not a single professional drummer on the planet who does not know or tried to play Neil's YYZ. Without a doubt, Neil inspired millions with his formidable prowess. He was also their lyricist, for the bulk of their material.
Man, I was at that show. Upper tier seats, but their sound thunders throughout the hotel's entertainment venue anyway, so... Saw the live 6 times. I remember being at one show, outdoor venue in Arizona, USA, when I was relieving myself of some of the beer I had imbibed in at the "trough" when I heard "Red Barchetta" starting. Man, I was so excited, I put it away before I was finished and ran back as close to the stage as I could get and ROCKED OUT! Man, that was epic. Xanadu is also a fantastic song to experience live. To bad you never had the chance to see them.
Beautiful to watch rush Expand another open mind even further. Welcome to the family. You’re right, you have many hours of not only listening, but reading and contemplating some deep, meaningful sublime (to use your term) lyrics that will likely inspire and enhance your Self. Most of them by Neil.
The word "passionate" and the words "Rush fan" are inextricably linked. The studio versions of these songs are more true to their intended intent though, I think. Natural Science would be a good next choice. So many songs to choose from ... one really good early one would be the Necromancer from the album Caress of Steel.

Hi Ruben: Nobody has done "Subdivisions" yet in a review. Rush has done so many songs from so many Genres. Please do This one. One of the best New wave songs from the early 80's And from a Prog/heavy Metal band as well. OMG! It shows their musical genius to be able to cross so many boundaries.
I just love your reactions to Rush. I love seeing you close your eyes to really listen & then you find yourself having to open them to see how the heck are they doing what they're doing. Great job as always. Again, just for the fun of it, I'd love to see you do a Fan Reaction to O'Basteria. That's one of Neil Peart's drum solos. No one has ever posted a review of one of Neil's drum solos. I think that you would be totally blown away! Rock on. Bill
Got to see them in the 1980's on there Grace under pressure tour. Vivid memory of when Geddy Lee would step on his sub sonic bass pedal, it vibrated the walls of the hockey arena. Some people don't care for that album, but I saw them do the whole album live, that's probably why it stands out for me.
Watching them perform this live for the first time in a long time after many decades of going to their shows was amazing . This video doesn’t really do justice to the overall performance, however. Their musical performance combined with their exceptional laser light show gave this song an overwhelming sensory overload. Absolutely fantastic.
You can get rid of that metallica poster for a RUSH poster if you like or LOVE them so much, Iv'e got plenty if you want one ? Keep on Rushing... God Bless Neil Peart .
Better late then never.....that's what I said when I finally got into New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders/Heartbreakers. Great rock n roll is always there.
So happy for you Ruben. I grew up near Toronto so have been lucky enough to see them live twice. "Closer to the Heart" was popular. I like "Temples of Syrinx" and a huge part of the "2112" album. You might also like "Tom Sawyer" which was also a hit for them. Enjoy.
the really awesome thing about rush.. is.. all of there songs..are worthy of reaction..the lyrics..written mostly by neil ,,the drummer..with collaboration with geddy and alex.. all tell a story..the way the band wrights there songs.. bitor and the snow dog.. witch hunt..subdivision.. sector red.. the list goes on..
Thanks Ruben, my favorite band. Hard to choose a best song. I don't. Always go for the popular ones. Natural science or between the wheels for me. But there are so many favorites.
In English, a Jacob's ladder is a phenomenon where the sunlight breaks through the clouds and send shafts of light down. The term comes from the story in Genesis where Jacob dreams of a ladder that stretches down from heaven, which angels climb up and down. You hear a lot of ascending and descending notes that evoke that, asking with the final "break through" part of the song. The Wikipedia article on the story is pretty interesting.
I look forward to your next Rush review! A newer suggestion would be: Seven Cities of Gold, Headlong Flight, or Caravan! Oldies: The Enemy Within, Trees, or A Passage to Bangkok. Random favourites: Dreamline, Far Cry, or Animate... I used to sing these to my daughters, but they may not be as cool in this format: The Pass, Closer to The Heart. So many more! 150 or so in total - lol... Enjoy!!
The reason most reaction videos use live versions is because the studio versions get detected by youtube's auto-detection systems and then you either get the video pulled, or at the least get denied the ability to make ad revenue off it (the ad revenue goes to the music holder instead).
Indeed, Geddy's bass sound on this live is not "right". I've seen them many times live and there are often problems (to my ears) with the bass sounds. Studio tracks is the way to go. Although crowd reaction is important too.
Songs gets me every time. So good love the changes. Glad your are enjoying this group. Check out Time stands still. It’s one of my personal favorites 👍
I saw this 3 times on the last tour. It provoked such a great atmosphere and was quite an experience to see, hear, and feel them performing it. Check out Far Cry live. It's one of their "newer" songs (if an 11 year old song could be considered new), and it just makes you feel like you can survive anything.
Happy to see you absorbing RUSH as you are. Been a fan of 35 years now. This suggestion may not have crossed your screen, but I would check out The Camera Eye (Moving Pictures version). It was the magical thread that weaved me into a RUSH frenzy to this day.
My Favorite Band !!! The first song I ever heard was Tom Sawyer. Absolutely blew me away! My favorite band ever since. Neil Peart, the BEST drummer I’ve ever heard !!!
These are the Rush classic favourites (radio play etc) Tom Sawyer YYZ Witch Hunt ( lyrically, I can't recommend this one enough to you Ruben....its that good) Limelight Closer to the Heart Spirit of the Radio Fly By Night Freewill Subdivisions Distant Early Warning Show Don't Tell I'm sure I missed a few, but these are songs that still get airplay or get referenced often. FAN favorites could be a whole other list!
Thanks again for a terrific 80s Rush song. Love Jacob's Ladder. I'm so glad you're going with their live concerts. While the studio albums are awesome, their live performances were always amazing - Great live band. This was from their final tour, where they played their songs in reverse order, and if you watch the concert video, stage hands are constantly changing their stage set. So at the beginning of the concert they're playing songs from the Clockworks Angels tour, using that set, but by the end of the concert, they're playing songs from their 1974 "Rush" album, and the set looks like a high school gymnasium! BTW, look closely at Geddy's "Ampeg" amps - The logo is "Dirk," which is Geddy's nickname.
I always loved the part following the bridge, where Alex is playing that repeating scale and Neil and Geddy come in bits at a time. I remember playing this song in a band I was in at the time Permanent Waves came out, I don’t think we ever played it live, but used to like doing more obscure Rush tunes at practice. I just remember how difficult it was to stay focused on that guitar scale when those drum were playing that really weird syncopated drum beat when it first comes in. It was a lot easier playing it with the record where you had Alex to follow along with, but without him, it was a lot harder to not get out of time. It kept sounding like our drummer was making a mistake, but he wasn’t. That’s what Peart was playing. A really crazy beat. I really loved Lifeson’s piece there. The time signature was really odd.
This one you should listen to on the Exit Stage Left or the original album. Sorry that's your first listening. One of my favorites :( As a fan request, I would love to have your take on a song by Rush called Losing it, which you'll find on the Signals album. A unique and very different kind of Rush with some of the best lyrics by Neil. Keep it up bro !!! Nothing like seeing someone discover Rush.!!!
What a beautiful song! Check out Johnny Dinklage playing it live onstage with them. ruclips.net/video/XJWvImsewEY/видео.html He was one of the Clockwork Angels musicians. Can't miss him, he looks just like his brother...only taller.
Ruben - The drummer (Neil Peart) does have some tendonitis issues. He's never liked touring, but did it is a job requirement in the industry. In the 90's he lost both his wife to cancer and his 18 y/o daughter to a car crash within a year of each other. He's since remarried and has a very young daughter. I believe his main reason for not wanting to tour anymore is more that he wants to spend time at home, with his family, not so much his health. (I'm sure that's some of it too, though). Great video...keep them coming! Regarding the next Rush song to review...Xanadu or Freewill, both on Exit...Stage Left, would be great choices!!!
Alex does have tendonitis along with arthritis. Neil has been plagued with what is essentially "tennis elbow" for years. On some tours, he wore a wrap on his forearm/elbow to help with the pain. I've been playing the drums for over 35 years and have had bouts with it myself. It sucks to try and play the drums with a constant pain in your forearm.
I still say by tor and the snowdog live on all the worlds a stage !!!! Catches the trio at their peak in their early stages and they take a very heavy yet epic song and add to it and play even better on this live version. This will rock your brains out yet take you on a trip in your head. imagine a led zeppelin on heavy metal steroids is how I describe it.
The amazing power trio of Rush ! It's heavy yet atmospheric at the same time. It's technical and has many interesting changes to keep from being repetitive yet it has a seamless consistent straight line through it. Even in the parts where it "sounds" repetitive there are subtle changes. Anyone who doesn't at least give Rush a nod regardless of taste in music is either stupid and it goes over their heads or they are bias ass holes. They never needed a top 40 hit or big mtv video and they never needed trendy outfits, big hair, or make up. And they never sold out and made songs with such cheesy worn out clichés ie getting drunk & high, tearing up hotel rooms, fighting, or banging under age groupies to some simplistic repetitive chorus, beat, and rhythm that's been done a million times. Still they sold over 20 multi platinum albums making them one of the top 3-4 most selling rock bands ever, got into the rrhof, and this Canadian working middle class non commercial band even got a star on Hollywood blvd. Again, regardless of taste and whether you like the band or not if you know anything about this band and still don't give them a nod you're either tone deaf or a bias asshole.
I recommend hearing this song as STUDIO version from the album Permanent Waves. Especially the section with the changin rhythms and speeds. I think you can hear the difficult!!! changes much better there. Give it a try!
There are so many good Rush songs, it is tough to narrow it down. I personally think that Bravado, The Pass, Animate, Subdivisions, Freewill and 2112 are some of my favorites, but there are many many more. I am excited to go on this journey with you!
King diamond Great band from 80s all the albums are told in a scary story format. King diamond is the singer he was also in a band called mercyful fate whitch has more straight forewored lyrics.
The studio version of this song is life-changing.
If there is ever existed a recording of a drum kit being beaten within an inch of it's life.... it's the studio version.
@@evracer Rumour has it the Drumkit had to lie down and have a cigarette after this recording..

Absolutely agree John! No version out there beats the Live version from Exit Stage Left!
First album I listened to (thanks to my drum teacher) and it's still my favorite. :)
You nailed it. Exit...Stage Left also has the best versions of Freewill and La Villa Strangiato IMHO.
Agreed!@@traumaturgist
My favorite Rush song of all time is probably Xanadu. Highly recommended.
You can't truly experience Rush without hearing Xanadu. Great choice with Jacob's Ladder though...great stuff!
Yeah, Xanadu kicks ass
A lot of people hate Geddy Lees voice but if they would listen to Xanadu and really, all of their music they would see that his voice is pretty damn amazing.
Marc Sorensen Great comment, Marc. And as much as I love Geddy, he even annoys ME a bit when he’s having an off day in concert. But he has done some great vocal performances in studio, Xanadu being one of them.
That's my fav rush song too
I’m so happy you discovered Rush. They have given me 35 years of musical magic. Enjoy your next 35...🤘🏻
When I see them play live it instantly raises the hair on my arms. They were one of the best if not the best band that ever hit the face of this earth! Closest to perfection. They were masters of the art of music.
The time changes in the third act of this song are so God damn completely complex cool and seamless. It's almost unreal
Dude......... Studio Version. Try it. Studio Version. I think I speak for just about everyone on the Fing planet when I say.... crank the STUDIO VERSION!!!!! Oh hell yeah!!!!!!!!!

Jacob’s Ladder was one I did not expect. Another fantastic one from Permanent Waves is Natural Science. Also, I cannot recommend Xanadu enough!!!

Just seeing them live on youtube gives me chills.Seeing them in person was just electric.
A song describing a thunder storm to a tee...Blows you away
Watching Rush reactions never gets old. Much like listening to Rush never gets old...
Gonna miss these guys!

That’s an understatement. Our heart beckons for their return
This and previous versions young and old versions of Jacobs Ladder are the best as the earlier vintage year offered such greatness ! Rush for world leadership!

TwinRavens good call

Freewill got me into Rush in 1984!
TwinRavens i loved perminent waves..came out my grad yr..however my first rush was 2112..also saw them live 78 i think
Thank you, thank you, thank you for not talking over the top of the song. You listened, then gave your opinion, some don't do that and have to give a running commentary, thank you for respecting the art.

Thanks for doing this song. It is my daughter's favorite, so it is very special to me.
First saw Rush in 1974. They opened for somebody called... KISS !!!
Holy crap.... what a show.
Awesome! I was there that night, amazing show.

Love how Alex leisurely walks up to his Taurus Pedal and starts playing a second instrument, incredible talents these three are!
Welcome to the Rush universe !!!!!!!!
To boldly go where a lot of people have been :)
Ruben Buijs
Enjoy the catching up!!!!!!
Saw this live, They were absolutely awesome, welcome to the discoveries
RUSH - Freewill!!!!!!!! New sub also. I get goosebumps everytime after listening to what i call the best 3 man jam EVER!

The best thing about Rush is they sound more than 3 members. And of course how they three sounds so great together and having fun
They pulled this one out of the vault for their farewell tour. They hadn't performed it in thirty some years! Let that sink in for minute
Man, I was at that show. Upper tier seats, but their sound thunders throughout the hotel's entertainment venue anyway, so... Saw the live 6 times. Phenomenal Power Trio, Spirit of the Radio, Freewill, Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and more, if you like this you should listen to Heart of the Sunrise by YES.
I couldn't knock that smile off your face with a 2x4. That smile tells me your getting it.

If you can find Analog Kid live by Rush, check it out. It's shorter, but rocks all the way through. 1982 Signals album. My personal favorite.
Nothing can touch the sound of his slingerland snare!!

And you gotta play Cygnus first or the story of Book 2 is lost.
Better late then never.....that's what I said when I finally got into New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders/Heartbreakers. Great rock n roll is always there.
Rush has a very beautiful instrumental composition called "Leave That Thing Alone". try it next time Ruben, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
It's a good one. :) I love Malignant Narcissism, too. It's got a groove to it.
That jam is one of my favorites
Where's my thing.
Leave that Thing Alone, live from Different Stages, is glorious.
Love the one measure of 5/4 in the middle, just to keep themselves on their toes!
So happy for you Ruben. I grew up near Toronto so have been lucky enough to see them live twice. "Closer to the Heart" was popular. I like "Temples of Syrinx" and a huge part of the "2112" album. You might also like "Tom Sawyer" which was also a hit for them. Enjoy.
They are trying to explain a thunderstorm in music..My fav Rush tune of all time
the really awesome thing about rush.. is.. all of there songs..are worthy of reaction..the lyrics..written mostly by neil ,,the drummer..with collaboration with geddy and alex.. all tell a story..the way the band wrights there songs.. bitor and the snow dog.. witch hunt..subdivision.. sector red.. the list goes on..
One of my favorites...nice review
Not the best version, I'd check out the studio version in your own time
I look forward to your next Rush review! Enjoy!!
Listen to the studio versions first. There are many nuances not picked up in the live recordings if you don't know the music well.
very true
Permanent Waves was my first Rush album, and remains my favourite.
Happy to see you absorbing RUSH as you are. Been a fan of 35 years now. This suggestion may not have crossed your screen, but I would check out The Camera Eye (Moving Pictures version). It was the magical thread that weaved me into a RUSH frenzy to this day.
for years i played that song to put me to sleep at night. from exit stage left.
Enjoying your journey of Rush.
With one song a month, you'll be good for years. :-)
Jacob' ladder.......one of the eighest moments in music history!
My Favorite Band !!! The first song I ever heard was Tom Sawyer. Absolutely blew me away! My favorite band ever since. Neil Peart, the BEST drummer I’ve ever heard !!!
These are the Rush classic favourites (radio play etc)
Tom Sawyer
YYZ
Witch Hunt ( lyrically, I can't recommend this one enough to you Ruben....its that good)
Limelight
Closer to the Heart
Spirit of the Radio
Fly By Night
Freewill
Subdivisions
Distant Early Warning
Show Don't Tell
I'm sure I missed a few, but these are songs that still get airplay or get referenced often. FAN favorites could be a whole other list!
The whole of 2112...
Follow men’s eyes as they look to the skies
The shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams
Masterpiece.
I was there. My 2nd and last Rush concert.
Check out Johnny Dinklage playing it live onstage with them. ruclips.net/video/XJWvImsewEY/видео.html
He was one of the Clockwork Angels musicians. Can't miss him, he looks just like his brother...only taller.
You need a RUSH poster for your wall.
I think it's Alex, the guitarist, with the tendonitis issues.
Rush takes you for a smooth ride
The True Rush Masterpiece !! Yet Among Other's..?
Well this crowd did NOT live up to Rio! Loved the song though, thanks for sharing it with us Ruben.
2112 IS PRONOUNCED...21...12
FYI, the "reference" version of this song is the Exit Stage Left version, followed by the studio version.
Also FYI, everyone is saying Xanadu...the ESL version is the greatest guitar solo in recorded music imho.
I am excited to go on this journey with you!
good music makes it's own friends
Masterpiece..
Xanadu......really great!
Witch hunt....live Cleveland.......excellent version!
real science yes. So intense. Recently found myself crying a bit last time I heard it since I see those eyes in people these days.
King diamond Great band from 80s all the albums are told in a scary story format. King diamond is the singer he was also in a band called mercyful fate whitch has more straight forewored lyrics.
Their live performance of "Xanadu" from Exit Stage Left is pretty insane
