We could view his passing as a loss, and it hurts, but we can also view it as a tremendous gain for all he touched. He’s had an incredibly positive impact on my life and I never even met the guy!
I don't look at it as a loss - he was someone to look ip to and be inspired by - my life is richer for having experienced Rush, and Neil. What would be a loss is if one misses the lessons taught. We will miss him, and will not have anything new to ponder, other than what he left behind. That may be a loss, but it isn't one that isn't realized, so really what did we lose? Cherrish the memory, and learn from them. Then teach it to the next generation. That way, it can't be a loss. Rest in peace, Neil Peart. Thank you for what you have given. Say "Hi" to Buddy Rich and John Bonham for me.
This man is a beautiful human being. So are Alex and Geddy, of course. There is no band on earth in the history of bands to top Rush. They're just unique and special.
There have been plenty of awesome musicians in the obituaries over the past 18-24 months (prince, Bowie, petty, EW&F Maurice, Grant Hart, et al). However, the passing of Neil hit me like nothing I expected. I hurt on the inside. I had no interest in doing much last weekend when I heard, etc. I think the delta here is that NP was such a sweet, committed, honest, smart, likeable, honorable work horse. He was so humble yet so brilliant. And Rush, almost like a relative that came to live in your parents home to ride it out, were part of my “household” for over 30 year, it cannot be helped to deeply lament this extraordinary man, and the poignancy of no longer having him on earth.... He was a real gift. Thank you for reading. Love,
So right.... pure wisdom and thought and soul and everything when this man speaks. Amazing Human Being is all I can say. So sad I never saw RUSH live, my bad and I regret it
@@kevinroberts361 It is so true, Neil is all of what is possible in the human potential. You can readily hear it in his amazing skill as a drummer and his amazing lyrical writing skills. RIP. I was fortunate to have seen RUSH live - but not often enough. 💖🎼🥁 Enthusiasm!
I remember being in high school, grade 11, 1978. I took a class where we learned first about art and then about music in a class called Humanities. In the period before me, these boys were writing on a corner of the board "47 More Days Until RUSH," then "46 Days Until RUSH" and on and on. After a while I wanted to know who was writing that. It turned out to be 3 guys who were just ON FIRE about the band. I didn't know who Rush was, but I appreciated the fact that our elderly teacher let those guys write on her board every day and didn't erase it. I was just learning to play the drums. Eventually I discovered Rush, became a fan, listened intently to Neil's parts, and even majored in music at University later on (many lessons later). Alex, Geddy, and Neil were made for each other. Even today at age 57 I still hear new things in their music. They are a musical treasure because they were never afraid to expand the boundaries of music and to take both words and music to new places in our consciousness.
He is the most famous, but by no means the "most accomplished." Neil himself, I'm sure, would laugh at that notion. For example, Buddy Rich could play anything that Neil played and much much more. Vinnie Colayuta, same thing. Now, is Neil one of the best "artists" of all time? Yes. Factor in the parts he came up with and the lyrics and you have the total package, and that is even more impressive than "most accomplished" which suggests mere technical proficiency.
"it's a privilege to be a professional music artist in the world and to celebrated and to be paid for hitting things with sticks..." Arguably one of the greatest percussionists (maybe ever) and one of the most humble people I have heard speak. Hats off to you sir for a fabulous career filled with some of the most inspirational music of my youth (and my adulthood too).
First saw Rush live in April 1975 and last in May 2015. Devastated to hear the news of Neil Peart's death. Suddenly you were gone from all the lives you left your mark upon.
Punks hated rush in 70s Britain but what's more punk every body looking and sounding the same or looking and sounding different rush were looking and sounding different so that's more punk than punk. Integrity, Precision,Epic Proportions nobody sounded like Rush nobody sounded like NEIL PEART.
Danny Carey can sometimes be horseshit. If you are looking for proof, look no further than "10,000 days wings pt 2" it's a good song that Danny ruined by deciding that the whole song is now a drum solo
I love this man. I feel like I lost my cool uncle. I am still getting teary eyed. My older cousin turned me on to Rush when I was 8. I am 47 now. Rush has been the soundtrack to my life. RIP Professor.
Just the greatest guy ever. So inspirational, yet so humble. I've been a Hardcore RUSH fan since 1979. Neil's drumming, not to mention his lyrics, got me through those tough adolescent years (Subdivisions anyone?). So blown away by Clockwork Angels!! Best album they have done in decades, absolutely EPIC. Truly one of the most important people in my life, keep on creating brother, we still want more.....
A fan here since 1978. I've been to many shows. The band was no more on top of their craft than the Clockwork Angels tour. I felt I owed them money at the end of the show. Thought provoking lyrics and unpredictable music with many signature changes played at a skill level of 11. Who among us won't miss them? After 40 years I still want more.
Neil shows so much grace and humility in this interview as well as candor. The world has lost not only a great artist and musician, but a great human being. I feel so much sympathy for his family. RIP Mr. Peart.
What an incredibly cerebral, intelligent, well spoken and humble man. The world is less without Mr. Neil Peart in it. 100% in everything he accomplished in writing, traveling, lyrically or behind the kit. By looking at him here you know he showed up on his bike with little to no fan fair then quietly rode off to his next destination. For him and his inner circle to keep his illness from the world until two days after he'd passed in this age of social media and instant news is truly amazing. He even excelled at that.
Neil Peart was one of a kind human being. Super intelligent, super talented and super humble. It's really hard to watch this now after Neil's passing. He was the greatest drummer ever without any doubt whatsoever. Amazing genius and he will be long remembered. No other musician has affected me as much as Neil Peart. His lyrics, his playing, his songwriting, everything. RIP.
If you didn't know who this man was, and somebody told you he's one of the best drummers in the world. You would believe it, by this interview. Humble, intelligent and well spoken.
Has there ever been a more inspirational drummer and band than Neil and Rush? I doubt it. I listen to them everyday without fail. Just part of my life I guess. It's a joy to listen to Neil talking and fascinating to hear how it relates to the recording of Rush tracks. But actally, he could be talking about anything and I'd still be interested.
I`ve seen many NP interviews over the years and my own , constant " take away " has always been that I find my self saying ' I could listen to Neil discuss any topic at all ! ' His turn of phrase just always seems to fit whatever the subject matter is . More than that even , is I just really enjoy the timbre of his voice . IMHO , he would be very well suited to a career ( post Rush ) as a Narrator for all manner of Documentaries.
I never listened to Rush much but I have friends who are heartbroken & I appreciate their loyalty because I cried like a baby when Clarence Clemons died and I promised to look more into him. Prayers to those he left behind.
THIS is why he is on a platform all his own amongst other drummers, and why RUSH lasted as long as they did. Always giving 100%. Never took the easy road. What a class act, truly will miss him 😔
I miss just the thought of seeing them again, I have been a fan since 1974, seen them live over a hundred times, really miss them touring, But even more, that feeling of putting on a new album and listening to new Rush! A Farewell to King's!!!!!
Neil's intensity and high, high standards for everything are keys to him being known as one of the best drummers of all time. He is not full of himself. He is open to tips from others, he is always learning. Rush has been an important group for 40 years, with complex lyrics and music. How many other groups can say that? He is to rock drumming what Buddy Rich was to jazz drumming.
+Rob Kates I could have not said that better myself Rob, Nicely written. Neil is one of those people who regards himself as a professional, but doesnt think he knows everything. That is why Rush has been around for 40 years and the same goes for Geddy and ALex too...
Truly amazing how much you learn listening to Neil. Not just about drumming. Not just about Rush, musical performance, writing or recording. But just life in general. I guess you have to be at the very top of life, then the very bottom, then the very top again to truly be able to convey these stories ideas and principles. Doesn't hurt to be intelligent and eloquent either, like a laser beam. Wit, wisdom, humor. Thanks Neil!
My favorite band of all time. Rush was a big influence in my life. I remember so many times just closing my eyes and going on a fantastic journey. Thanks Neil :)
Such a wonderful thing, to hear this phenomenally gifted musician speak of his inspiring other drummers, and then talk about going to a drum teacher, and saying "I'm a Butcher, you're a surgeon. I'm a pretty good butcher, but I want to be more of a surgeon." The whole video is worthwhile to hear him say that he's famous for beating on things with sticks! Fortune passes everywhere.
I was lucky enough to see Rush live eight times over the years; some Rush fans have seen them hundreds of times but those eight times for me were magical. Such an incredible experience to see three musicians in perfect sync play complicated set lists while having fun on stage (Alex!). Neil's books have been amazing as well, he is insightful, intelligent, and an excellent communicator via prose. At this point in time, although I miss Rush's music a great deal, it is comforting to a point to know Neil has "gone dark" on his personal web page and, I hope, is enjoying his time with his family and friends. Forty years of playing and touring the way he has, the way Rush has, is far more than most musicians could ever dream of accomplishing. Thanks to Neil for being an amazing human being and sharing his music, lyrics, and prose with us! :-)
Too much man for one man. There's not many drummers of his level and reverence that are so humble and unassuming. Clever, talented, highly articulate which is reflected in him as a person and a musician. A Genius, a gentleman, a paragon of prog rock, and a massive influence on me as a drummer.
Fifty years from now there will be a kid that discovers rush and is inspired by their playing..and Neil will be come the greatest rock drummer of all time again. Rip Neil
I think this is the most relaxed and open I've ever seen Peart be in an interview. It's lovely and every single working musician should heed his words about always play to your fullest
Mr. Neil Peart: what an articulate, intelligent man. And blessed with an incredible amount of talent and a virtuoso at his crafts as a musician and an accomplished author. As a drummer (well..I try at it) I naturally hold him up as an example to aspire to for drumming but also admire him for his dedication to music, the band, and family. Thank you Neil. Best of luck in future endeavors and God Bless.
Such a well spoken person. Neil has always kept a low profile throughout his career and it is so great to see him more accessible for fans to get an inside "view" of the drummer that has influenced countless generations. Great questions and topics. This was very enjoyable
I played in a Rush cover band 40 years ago. This man has been a massive influence in my life. Being precise, passionate, having accountability, aspiring to be smart, made me a better musician, artist, designer, photographer. All because of one guy. Pretty freaky.
Neil was so amazing in so many ways.He always gave it 100% at all his shows, never abused drugs and alcohol and was a leader to so many.Although he is gone physically his teachings and legacy will never die.
Neil Peart for president....of the world! seen these guys 26 times from Moving Pictures to their last concert. love these guys like a friend I never met in person. long live RUSH!
I will admit that I was never the biggest rush fan, however after learning more about Neil and his love for motorcycling I have found a common Bond with him and what an incredible man he was, he is inspiring me to ride better and further. This coming summer I will listen to more Rush in my helmet while riding. Thanks Neil! RIP
I always enjoy a Neil Peart interview, the intelligence, the desire to keep learning, to remain in touch with reality and how it spills into all aspects of the band. When you think you’ve learnt it all on a subject, go out and find someone who you can learn more from! He was renowned for not doing many interviews, but when he did they were always extremely interesting, insightful and inspirational! Go out leaving EVERYONE wanting more. Hugely missed!
I have been watching Neil interviews all night and just right now looked at the comments only to find that he passed away. Oh my, what a loss... RIP Neil
All the comments i've read below is everything i can possibly think of about this wonderful human being. Mr. Peart is everything that a serious musician can be. TO NEIL : We all love rush and your human approach to life and drumming . We will never forget rush and you.
I've always been a casual Rush fan but have been diving into their music deeper the last year. I always assumed Neil was an overly serious guy based on how he looked on stage, but as I watch more and more interviews with him, he comes across as such a charismatic and beautiful human being.
His respect and dedication for his craft is inspirational and wise. He’s an old soul that just happened to be a great drummer. He was a lot more than that.
Peart with his skill as both a drummer and a writer of ideas have been a major blessing in my life for years. Thanks for sharing your many gifts my brother.
Humble, erudite, inspirational, caring and tireless, all qualities any person could aspire to be a better human. Neil Peart, an amazing human who knew and played the drums better than most of us will ever know ourselves, bravo, R.I.P., thanks for all you gave us and have left for all time, for that we will all be forever in your debt.
Amazing interview, interesting how Neil mentioned the early tours and the 'time' that he had, to 'read' books, in another interview with Geddy, he said wow, hey look at all this stuff this guy reads, I bet he could even write some incredible lyrics!! (the understatement of the last couple of decades) Neil is an amazing artist, and amazing human being, he's inspired alot of people, and has been through alot in his own personal life, tip of my hat to him, and it is amazing that the albums before MP were an apprenticeship wow ! ? really, try to follow him on some of those tracks alone!!
RIP Neil. Best drummer in the world. I used to live in St. Catharines, Ontario Canada. where Neil lives for a time. Their live album was the first Rush album my brother Russell brought home. It took a while to get used to Geddy’s voice but I used to play his solo over and over
I'd give up a month of my life to be able to sit down for a day with this guy and talk. It's uncommon to find a musician of this depth, intelligence and eloquence.
The blacksmith and the artist each must know his part to forge a new reality ! So powerful! Not concerned with stardom, not concerned with the rest, learning every day about the common man! What a brilliant mind we have lost! Rip .
"What is a master, but a master student?"-Neil Peart. Rest in Peace.
Hallo, the best Drummer ever play in his universe. Maybe with Moon, Bonham, Baker and many more. But the Professor show the way🙏✌️
Neil, professor, the best of all. AMEN
So much gratitude, integrity, and humility. What a loss.
So true, and if I may add. Logic, reason, heart, wisdom, intelligence, graciousness and humanity. A true Renaissance man.
This man was an exemplary human being.
We could view his passing as a loss, and it hurts, but we can also view it as a tremendous gain for all he touched. He’s had an incredibly positive impact on my life and I never even met the guy!

Well said.
What about The Beatles?
Their heroes are YES. Look to them.
Lmao, the Beatles ? You must be joking.
For the most part they stayed clear of drugs, all remained married, 2 things you don't find in other bands. It shows their stability.

I honestly don't understand the twelve souls that gave thumbs down...
RUSH is the best three man band EVER...
They are simply angry that Neil is actually mortal and did retire after all.
Such a well spoken person. Neil has always kept a low profile throughout his career and it is so great to see him more accessible for fans to get an inside "view" of the drummer that has influenced countless generations. Great questions and topics. This was very enjoyable
Truly a drummers drummer. Neil was a consummate artist. Always humble and always learning.
A brilliant drummer; a brilliant mind; a brilliant speaker; a brilliant kind.
True that! :)
This video is about to blow up in views. RIP Neil!!
It's still hard to believe my biggest drum hero is no longer here. All of those years, you "cared". We still care. Miss you Neil!
RIP Neil Peart. He wasn't a drummer, he was a great musician, thinker and artist.
Well, he was a drummer too, and a damned fine one.
I played in a Rush cover band 40 years ago. This man has been a massive influence in my life. Being precise, passionate, having accountability, aspiring to be smart, made me a better musician, artist, designer, photographer. All because of one guy. Pretty freaky.
Wow Paul, that's really cool. Thank you for sharing!
Neil was so amazing in so many ways.He always gave it 100% at all his shows, never abused drugs and alcohol and was a leader to so many.Although he is gone physically his teachings and legacy will never die.
What an amazing human being and gifted musicians. So humble and inspiring. RIP Neil
Neil Peart for president....of the world! seen these guys 26 times from Moving Pictures to their last concert. love these guys like a friend I never met in person. long live RUSH!
26 times! That's devotion. Hope each concert created great memories!
I seen Rush very tour since Hemispheres to their final show at the Los Angeles Forum
It really is a joy listening to him talk.
RIP
R.i.p. Neil Peart Greatest Rock Drummer of all time Greatest Rock Band of all Time
I always enjoy a Neil Peart interview, the intelligence, the desire to keep learning, to remain in touch with reality and how it spills into all aspects of the band.
RIP Neil
love you man ❤
the king is gone but not forgotten
All the comments i've read below is everything i can possibly think of about this wonderful human being. Mr. Peart is everything that a serious musician can be. TO NEIL : We all love rush and your human approach to life and drumming . We will never forget rush and you.
Couldn't agree more, Kevin!
So hard to believe the professor is gone .I love Rush and may he rest in peace
This one hurts. God bless the world for his 67 years on this Earth and what he did to work at his craft and give it to us.
Such a genuinely LOVELY man! xx Thank you Neil!
I enjoy his writing: songs, and books. What a talent: peace
Neil made everyone an "air drummer".
I could listen to Neil talk all day long!
An inspiration to so many. Neil will be missed. RIP professor.
RIP to this music legend.
It took a while to get used to Geddy’s voice but I used to play his solo over and over
It is amazing how he has become a little part of all us. Rock in peace Neil
A truly wonderful human being. Loved this man. His books are amazing on so many levels. RIP brother Neil.
What a master of the English language, beat and story telling. Thank you Neil. I think you speak as well as you play. I’m going to study you more.
I'd give up a month of my life to be able to sit down for a day with this guy and talk. It's uncommon to find a musician of this depth, intelligence and eloquence.
What a musician, the guy was tuned in to greatness without ego. What a life.
He has definitely been a main influence in my drumming. Awesome personality as well.
James Lennon you, me, and millions of other drummers. And like his drumming, his writings influenced my life considerably.
The blacksmith and the artist each must know his part to forge a new reality ! So powerful! Not concerned with stardom, not concerned with the rest, learning every day about the common man! What a brilliant mind we have lost! Rip .
So eloquently spoken. A true master at his craftsmanship.
God bless him 🙏
Geddy lee such a wonderful person who gave my brother such joy, I can’t thank him enough
RIP Neil. Thank you for the wonderful music that I will always enjoy.
Loved this man.....what a wonderful person.....
