Have adored and worshipped this man for years. Rush is my all time favourite band. They are simply perfect musicians and it is truly stunning they are such amazing humans as well. Rush and Neil Peart makes one believe in the goodness of life, they prove that is possible to live a full life without being bitter and cynical by the end of it. Totally stunned we lost Neil so quickly, without warning. Hiding his condition from his adoring fans is as classic a Neil Peart move as ever existed, he couldn't ever pretend a stranger was a long awaited friend. This feels like I lost a family member. Every single day I waste from now on, I fail my hero Neil Peart. Thank you Rush. Thank you, Professor Neil Peart. There will never be another you - a heartbroken fan from India.
I've watched this interview at least a half a dozen times and loved listening to The Professor teach stuff (reference to the Guardians of the Galaxy's Yondu) and I've always thought Neil's voice would be here forever. After Rush's retirement in 2015 I thought we'd have a few more books with some, hopefully, interviews on the tour much like Geddy's for his "Book of Bass". However, this week that hope was quashed forever. The eloquence and purity of that voice has been silenced with the passing of Neil Ellwood Peart. I know Neil wouldn't have wanted this, but I've been crying off and on for the days following the announcement Neil had passed. I think in the end that's a credit to the man Neil was. Insanely human and humble he was that part of my life I always depended on for that humility. I know Neil has left his voice within the lyrics Geddy Lee sung, and I know we'll have Rush's music forever, but that human part of me wanted that unmistakable voice of the Professor who continued to teach through his love of life. I know Alex and Geddy are still with us, hopefully for at least decades to come, but Neil's loss is still too near and dear. Losing David Bowie was hard, but even he said he was surprised he lived that long considering his drug use in the late 60s, early 70s. When he passed it was a shock, but not surprising. This, however, came out of left field. This was unexpected and I'll always remember where I was when the news came that Neil Peart, the best drummer and lyricist to have ever lived, has died. I won't say goodbye Neil. I'll say you're living somewhere beyond that lighted stage. Though not corporeal, still teaching us stuff about life...and death. Thank you Neil. Thank you for just being you.
Well said and yes it is still painful as I try to read as much as possible about Neil and his wisdom often reading and watching the interviews over and over....tears, this stranger would be glad to be a long awaited friend ! RIP My , friend.....
@@bishlap I've had enough with you and your behavior, every comment I click on, is a comment where you distilled hate and disrespected the memory of this honorable man who never hurt anybody, just because, in your opinion, he is not the best drummer and he talks profusely. And no, this is not the matter of discussion, I don't mind that; but here, we rush fans come to remember Neil Peart with love and respect. These are the memories we have left from him on this earth, and you came, and, almost like it was your job, spitted insults and slurs on every other comment just to create disagreement and arise outrage. Please, have a little respect for the deceased and and be tolerant of other people's preferences, it takes that, and a bit more, to be a good human being.
We have heard so often how Neil avoided the "Limelight" and gave very few interviews, here George you seem to have brought out to play the Neil we fans have all longed to see. It was an engaging interview. Neil was an extraordinary man, gifted in so many ways. We are fortunate he left us such a large body of work to enjoy and learn from. He is and will be deeply missed. RIP NEIL.
@Larry Lee Amen to that. Neil makes for a fun as can be interview. He is so smart but doesn't overpower you with big words. He just sprinkles them in so slightly. Also, the interviewer got out of the way and allowed a great interview!
I would love to see Strombo do one-hour interviews with every rock icon still alive --- he asks all the important questions and just sits back and LISTENS instead of interjecting all the time --- unlike Howard Stern who always interrupts people and asks retarded stuff like "what color panties does your wife wear?"
As a guitarist, but not much of a prog rock guy, I never dove into the Rush rabbit hole. I admired Neil Peart for his individualism and unwillingness to be part of the "star" game. This is the first time I've ever heard him interviewed. I have to say my admiration has multiplied three fold. What a wonderful human being and, as noted by others, a fantastic conversationalist. I expected more of a guarded man of few words. Boy, was I wrong.
I'm a drummer - and he was my idol for decades. I have one of his sticks and his autograph ... I keep them well-protected. Early fan - I wore a RUSH shirt to school and people asked me "What is that for? Like a head rush?" I said, "No...they are a band - and likely you will learn about them soon." Thank you for sharing this interview.
HUGE respect to this interviewer, great, natural conversationalist who seems genuinely interested, the prospect of interviewing Neil Peart must've been intimidating, as lovely a man as he was he was incredibly intelligent and probably didn't suffer your average mouthy vapid interviewer gladly, but he seems so relaxed in this interview and I put that in great part down to this interviewer, fair play! I'd loved to have met the professor and just shoot the shit with him, aside from his genius and the impact he had on my life, he just seemed like a fascinating guy to talk to!
"Suddenly you were gone. All the lives you left your life upon..." Forever grateful to this man. Thank you for the memories, the catalog of work and being an all around great human being. My childhood hero; my professor!
What’s not to love about this man? Simply the best drummer the world has seen AND such a well spoken, engaging and well rounded person. Nothing but admiration for you Neil.
For a man so notoriously private, hey him talking about the music and he had a childlike enthusiasm about, not only his music, but about music in general. His loss is definitely felt throughout the music world. 😥
@Joe Kinchicken THANK YOU Joe!!! I've been trying to say the same thing to these overgrown diaper wearers. The world didn't react this heartbroken after Hitler...

@Emmett Temple I loved John Lennon too. But he was an asshole to people. He cheated on his wife multiple times and laughed about it. Neil was the consummate gentleman and scholar. You should pray to have his character.
RIP, Professor. I am one of his biggest female fans. Saw them almost every tour since Moving Pics. I am gutted at this loss. 💔 Hugs to all Rush fans. “We’re only immortal for a limited time.”
Kelly Lewellyn he’s is why I’m a drummer today. When I got the news my heart had a burning sensation come upon it. Been pretty somber and have a big emptiness inside. The reality of his loss has been tough. I just keep watching Rush videos. I love and miss Neil. The greatest drummer and my inspiration to play drums. God bless you and RIP my friend Neil Peart....
Neil was the Man...unmatched behind his drum kit. His lyrical talent was amazing. This is a man who rebuilt his life after losing his family...this took tremendous courage. We are fortunate to have experienced his great talent. He left us way too soon and will be missed. His work is done here and now he can rest. His music allowed us all to enjoy life more because of him. A legacy very well earned.
Thanks George. Getting a guest like Neil Peart to be on the show is priceless. And such a great interview from the best drummer in the history of drummers. If JB and Moon were alive today, I am sure they both would have said the same.
Sheezus... Never mind getting chills from listening to his awesome drum work,, i was getting chills from his intelligence and interesting stories.... What an incredible human being
Mark Vrahotes in my dreams! But realistically no, Geddy or Alex might work with other artists from time to time, hope my hubby and I are fortunate enough to see them perform before it is really too late to see any of them play...we went to Ottawa for Canada’s 150th and were hoping they would make an appearance there but no such luck 😢
@@9jamesde Maybe a tribute concert with different artist playing. And hopefully geddy and alex maybe with dave on drums for a song or two. I would love to see that. But i highly doubt it. I can just hope something like that happens eventually. He deffenitly deserves it🙏
My favorite Neil interview. So foretelling. Crazy how he genuinely rejoices making it to 58, but now we all know 68, sadly, wasn't in the "bones". Also interesting how clearly he recognizes that he and his band mates are truly in their prime at this moment. As one of many Rush fans who has seen many tours since the 80s, and knowing this interview was during or shortly after Time Machine, you can't help but recognize that Rush truly was very "prime" in 2010/2011, and that they truly went out on high note in 2015 (while quite effectively masking much physical pain that comes with age and giving your everything to your fans for 4+ decades). Anyhow, you just can't help but admire and love Neil's ability to display incredibly accurate self-awareness and beautiful modesty all at the same time. With SO much going on in that huge brain of his, you'd think he'd slip up from time to time, and you'd be happy to forgive him, but no need with Neil - just the most cordial and regular guy, who just happens to be a genius, that you could ever meet. Truly a life more than worthy of celebrating into eternity.
Such an amazing interview. Neil is so humble and so well spoken and it's a shame he doesn't do more interviews, because he's such an interesting guy and I would love to hear more from him.
My favourite drummer from one of my favourite bands, I first saw Rush in 1980 on the Exit Stage Left tour and have seen them many times over the years. What a great man he is, sadly I hear he cannot perform any longer due to physical problems so I don't think we will ever get to see Rush perform live again as just like Led Zeppelin how could anyone fill Neil's shoes? Thanks for posting the video, I'm off to listen to 2112 now!!!!
I saw the 2112 tour when the LP first came out, his drumming was stellar! He inspired me to expand my drumkit to include more percussion sounds. The unfortunate problem in aging is that your body just cant do what it used to do. Sitting on a drum stool is not a natural thing when when you have four limbs moving constantly and twisting your body to reach drums and cymbals over distance.
Great example : Carl Palmer is still touring and started years before Neil did ! Neil just lost the desire to play . Too bad , he was Canadian and pretty good .
Feel so blessed to be able to understand the complexity the beauty of their work able to see them on several occasions. You are so deeply missed by so many.
as a Canadian first and a drummer second [heavily influenced by NP] , it is hard to imagine a more genuine and influential human being than Neil Peart.... in so many ways, if you don't know anything about the man or don't like rush.... you have to appreciate the man.............the world needs more people like Neil Peart!
Neil Peart may be the most influential drummer of all time. I know many will argue the point, but that guy changed the way thousands of musicians and drummers approached music and drumming. Yes, Moon, Bonham, and many others had influence, but for me Peart's style transcended anything before that era. He was a new precedent that thousands aspired to, self included.
I can't watch videos with him in them without tearing up. The guy grew up very near where I did, and I even know guys from highschool with the same last name! Neil was/is/will always be a legend! I will have my 'Rush moments' until I have no more moments left. Love to all that love Neil and R.I.P. genius!
"Having a sense of humor, if you share that, you share a bond and I'm sure this is true for any relationship that anyone might have... If you share a sense of humor, there's a really good start to your relationship." = GOLD
Neil wouldn't like the tears...it wasn't his way, but dammit Neil I'm still fighting them back anyway, I love you, and will never forget you. One of the greatest drummers of alltime. Rest in Peace.
Thank you Neil for doing the interview. I have seen you guys 3 times and you won me over ever time with Alex and Geddy! Take care Neil, we love you and thanks for all the great music.
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary
Tearing up as I'm re-watching this. So blessed by my fan "relationship" with Rush. The Professor is very missed. Thrilled he mentioned my Kansas City and its terrific Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Amazing that being the more "private" member of the band, he is absolutely the BEST interview.
This guy has so much integrity. So intelligent, well spoken, kind hearted, skilled, humble, and the list goes on. My utmost respect for you sir. You are an inspiration not only to drummers but to everyone because of the great person you were. We could all learn from your example. The world is a better place because of your influence. Rest In Peace Neil
Well said, although simply put! I think if we all put a little more effort into treating each other with intrigue and compassion that it would be a great way to honor the Professor and all the great things he was willing to share with people. Rest in Peace Neil Peart
It isn't just the drumming, it's that amazing brain of his that was the best. I've seen many interviews with him and they were all brilliant. This is a very good interview and he shows his great sense of humor and his massive intelligence. What a loss when he died. Not just a great musician, but a great, smart, kind, funny man.
We are all better people for having heard Neal Peart in our lifetime. On top of his other-worldly percussion skills, he is blessed with an incredible speaking voice and intellect. Kudos also to the interviewer. He seemed to actually listen and ask honest questions, while letting Mr. Peart be the center of attention. RIP good man.
Every time I hear Peart interviewed, the more stupid I feel. I could listen to him talk for days and never get tired of listening to him. Why doesn't he have a podcast is beyond me.
so few people in todays entertainment industry deserve the title of "idol", much less "role model". yet here is a man in a band where ALL 3 of them deserve BOTH titles, but would all humbly refuse to be described as either. RUSH is a class act through and through, and everyone would be a better person for trying to emulate them. if not musically, at least spiritually. Rock on gentlemen! your place in history is well deserved!
So cool to see first not only a drummer god interviewed. But a man who is so worldly and intelligent. Neil not only is my idol as a drummer. but seems to be such a genuine man. Thank you.

Willowdale is where the 3 travelers came from in the tune "The Necromancer" from Caress of Steel. Yeah, I am an old time RUSH fan. I go all the way back to the 1st LP. I first saw them touring with KISS in 75.
From Toronto too ! Rush was a good trio rock band but never drew fans like ELP did ! Eg : Olympic Stadium , 2 sold out concerts with 78,000 fans each night ! Carl Palmer still tours and is years older than our Neil and played full time at 16 yrs of age . Wish Neil loved to play that much !
As a young teenager, I remember Neil Peart saying on the radio: "This is Neil Peart from Rush, with a Rush Triple Shot on Q102." Then, they would play 3 Rush songs in a row. (That was a radio station in Dallas, Texas.)
Wow, now *that* takes me back to high school...good ol' Redbeard and Triple Shot Thursdays. Back when 94.5 The Edge was still really alternative and the radio stations you listened to were as much tribal signifiers as the clothes you wore.
Beautiful.
Your words moved me to tears ---- just wanted you to know that
Well said and yes it is still painful as I try to read as much as possible about Neil and his wisdom often reading and watching the interviews over and over....tears, this stranger would be glad to be a long awaited friend ! RIP My , friend.....

I'll agree, but don't confuse diarrhea of the mouth for intellect.
TJ Thanks for the life advice, Chief.

Rock-n-Roll Heaven just welcomed another star.
RIP NEIL.
George listened well and had perfect questions
He has a very likable personality in addition to his talent.
agree
It's easy to see why Rush was seen as a "cerebral band" --- all three members are very intelligent
@Larry Lee Amen to that. Neil makes for a fun as can be interview. He is so smart but doesn't overpower you with big words. He just sprinkles them in so slightly.
Also, the interviewer got out of the way and allowed a great interview!
Strombo is a skilled interviewer. Look for his interview with Robert Plant and another Canadian music legend, Gordon Lightfoot.
I would love to see Strombo do one-hour interviews with every rock icon still alive --- he asks all the important questions and just sits back and LISTENS instead of interjecting all the time --- unlike Howard Stern who always interrupts people and asks retarded stuff like "what color panties does your wife wear?"
He doesn't speak much, but what he says actually has worth. Very rare in today's world.
"Rust In Peace"hands down the one best rock/metal album ever recorded.
Period. Still unmatched today..🤘
Yes he is very reticent!
Never realised what a genuinely nice man Neil is....What a lovely person. He exudes warmth.
The whole band is truly human.
As a teen I was fortunate to see Rush in Poughkeepsie, NY. Now at 60 years old I am still amazed spell bound by Rush's music. Time Stands Still

There are a lot of female Rush fans out there --- kinda dispels the myth of them being a nerd band for boys

Neil Peart’s immortality is assured in his lyrical poetry. Generations to come will listen to Rush and love them as we have. Rest easy, Neil

RIP Neil I regret we never were able to catch Rush in concert 😢
Do you think they will reunite and hire a new drummer?
Mark Vrahotes in my dreams! But realistically no, Geddy or Alex might work with other artists from time to time, hope my hubby and I are fortunate enough to see them perform before it is really too late to see any of them play...we went to Ottawa for Canada’s 150th and were hoping they would make an appearance there but no such luck 😢
Thanks Susana. Youre probably right. This is so sad.
Geddy has been very clear on that Rush isn't playing anymore before Neil died, there are some videos of him beeing very clear on the subject
@@9jamesde Maybe a tribute concert with different artist playing. And hopefully geddy and alex maybe with dave on drums for a song or two. I would love to see that. But i highly doubt it. I can just hope something like that happens eventually. He deffenitly deserves it🙏
Fantastic interview. This is the first time I have seen Neil in interview. Great guy and the best rock drummer...EVER !!!

Great example :
Carl Palmer is still touring and started years before Neil did !
Neil just lost the desire to play .
Too bad , he was Canadian and pretty good .

R.I.P My hero....thank you for making me drum better all these years. 😔😖😫
Love and prayers to your two brothers in arms......Alex and Geddy.
While Neil never helped me drum better...I like to think he made me live better.
Love to all that love Neil and R.I.P. genius!

Gary
