1985 to 1999 is my favorite time frame when it comes to watching anime.
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. This is literally one of the first anime films I was ever exposed to and I was so excited for it after seeing a preview of it in a video game magazine. This movie was solely responsible for strengthening my interest in anime in the mid 1990's. The Chun Li Vs Vega fight scene is one of my favorite fight scenes in all of anime.
Record of Lodoss War. This is such a timeless U.S. Manga Corps release. With an amazing soundtrack and it just caters to your inner drive towards all things mystical/medieval and everything in between.
Macross (Robotech). I ws only exposed to the first series. The original macross saga but since I never seen the uncut japanese original, I had to settle for robotech, but I have a huge crush on the voice actress for lisa hayes. I grew up falling in love with that character ever opportunity I had to watch the show. It was literally the first anime i was ever exposed to.
A lot of the recommendations are animes that I've never seen before, so I'll have to keep an eye out for them when i find more free time to watch them. I definitely want to keep an eye out for gunbuster because it seems right up my alley for the kind of anime that I like.

i remember watching Golden Boy. to elaborate on the first episode, he spent the nights studying BASIC, which was one of the early windows programming languages, but when he gets to the software company, all their programs were done in another language, which he has no clue about. he hadn't seen any of these new functions or what they're supposed to do, so he just fails in front of the girls. but as the show is known for, it's still a really good episode throughout and makes you want to see what happens in the next episodes

Hey, John, I was just rewatching this one and if you happen to see these comments on the older vids, I strongly recommend you check out Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End. It's a currently running TV series, heavy D&D vibes, but it approaches the passage of time and friends and experiences in a way I hadn't seen previously in anime. As a fellow older gamer who still keeps the joy of the past alive, I can say it really struck me in a unique way.

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 7 лет назад

Ranma 1/2 is my favorite anime of all time and I wish I could recommend it to more people but i just can't because of the culturally adult themes. It's a show that I think is perfect for elementary school or Jr. High kids... except for the parts that are completely inappropriate. And the biggest problem is that the first episode is really the worst offender.

    • @brayanargandonaflorentino548

@@JazGalaxy I have a blast watching Ranma 1/2 on Hulu and thinking about getting on Blu Ray or DVD. I've heard that Ranma 1/2 was very popular in México and I didn't even know about it. I always wanted to see the movie " Ranma 1/2 Big Trouble in Nekonron, China" when I was a kid seeing the trailer after watching the episodes of Pokemon on VHS, but never get the chance finding it on the local video rental store

Your taste in anime to me is impeccable! You truly speak for me with all of your fantastic old school anime recommendations. My first experience with GE 999 is very similar, the first time I ever saw it was on the Sci-Fi channel late at night, and I was and still am
    enthralled with Leiji Matsumoto's work!
Anything from the Urban Vision license is always classic. I was introduced to anime through Wicked City of all anime to see first. I saw it on HBO very late at night when I was a child...almost scarred me, lol.
Golden Boy is one of the anime I always shared with everyone who wasn't familiar with it, and holds a special place for me and my friends.

I watched Legend of Galactic Heroes (Heldensagen vom Kosmosinsel) recently. Heard a lot good things about it over the years. (BTW it be a good episode theme I think if you were to focus on a particular North American early anime distributor and it's output, story, reputation, etc. like US Renditions or of course, AnimEigo).

Yes, gunbuster is very much Anno’s rookie card on his way to evangelion. Quite brilliant. Recently as an adult I rewatched the entire Maison Ikkoku and I got quite a bit more from it. By the end I was so attached to the characters that ending the series was very bittersweet. This would be a good way to introduce a girlfriend into anime imo. It’s very centered in reality and just makes you feel like you’re in Japan with them, kind of like an animated Ozu film. KOR is another romcom but with some supernatural elements. Both great shows from the other end of the spectrum from giant robot stuff.

It should be no surprise that many of the anime that you have such fond memories of share one name in common -- Gainax. From Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise and Gunbuster, to Otaku no Video and Evangelion, virtually everything this anime studio touched was golden. I dare say they are similar to a Studio Ghibli in the sense that when you watch a production from Gainax, chances are it's going to be great!

Great show, Johnny. Your taste in old-school anime is impeccable. ;)
JUST when I thought you weren't gonna mention Escaflowne, you son-of-a-gun.

Record of Lodoss War was one of my favorite games on the dreamcast, so I'm going to check that one out for sure.

I always love going back to your anime vids to find or look up an anime I haven't seen yet. I have watched so many classics now thanks to you but there is one anime i'm always curious about that I haven't heard you mention....Space Adventure Cobra! The classic series, have you seen it?
