Johnny, you really need to play Majora's Mask. Its a little tough to get into at first, a lot of repetition in the first couple of hours, but after you get to the point where you can save your game and you learn the song that slows down the flow of time it gets sooo much better. IMO one of the best Zelda games.

The art style and the music create such an epic atmosphere, everytime I hear the first few notes of a song from Wind Waker I'm immediately pulled back to when I first played this game on Gamecube. Majoras Mask is my favorite. I liked the dark weird aesthetics, the story, the characters and how the three day time cycle meant that every character in the game was doing a specific thing at a specific time.
I remember when I was in my teens playing this game and getting hit with the realization that I was playing in an actual world with real characters each following their own schedule. It was a "woah holy shit!" moment.
Ocarina of Time blew me away as it was my first Zelda experience and first introduction into 3D gaming. I didn't believe anything could transcend that experience until I played Majora's Mask. It's the avant-garde of Zelda games.

I've fallen into the rabbit hole that is Link to the Past Randomizer runs. If you've played LttP enough to memorize where most of the things are, that's the next step.
Every treasure chest's contents are randomized, but in a way that still makes it possible to complete it. Every treasure chest, you have no clue what'll be in it. It starts becoming one gigantic logic puzzle as you travel across the game world to get the items you need to finish the game.
Amazing fun, I'd recommend it at least once.

I'd say Ocarina of Time is my favorite Zelda game because of the many great memories I have with it. always been obsessed with zelda 2 and I think it was because of the difficulty mixed with how cryptic it was. hidden pitfalls, secret rooms that felt like you weren't supposed to find, ridiculously hard fights with the iron knuckles, and the rpg elements. this was always the zelda that eluded me. I had to borrow it from my cousin in order to play it. this was a point in my childhood when I wanted to see places you were never meant to go. the original metroid made me feel that way too but thats for a different discussion. the hidden parts of the game always felt glitchy so it was very satisfying thinking I found something I wasn't supposed to.

I wish they would have mentioned the portable games, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons and Ages, Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Link Between Worlds, etc.as they kept the classic 2d Zelda formula alive. I would have to say that Link to the Past and Wind Waker were my favorites in the series. Wind Waker is a masterpiece, visually, sonically, and the gameplay elements were improved, it felt faster than the N64 Zelda titles. Wind Waker was the breath of fresh air that the series needed, it revitalized the franchise and offered up a unique experience.

I started the series with Ocarina of Time, which is funny because I have been gaming since the NES era and I bought several games for it, but for some reason I never even heard of Zelda until a boy in the neighbourhood lent me his copy of OoT when I was 14. I fell madly in love with it and it was my favourite for years and years. Then A Link Between Worlds dethroned it as my favourite (and I eventually got to fully play Wind Waker and Twilight Princess which also got pretty high on my list) and then... Breath of the Wild. Oh man, that game...
My current top 6 Zelda games are:
    1. Breath of the Wild
    2. A Link Between Worlds
    3. Wind Waker (HD)
    4. Twilight Princess (HD)
    5. Ocarina of Time

So funny when he said the long trips on the water got to him, and Johnny said "i was a smoker at the time" probably why it didn't bother me either, was a stoner lol, and my wife quit due to all the travel. She gets motion sickness with games though :/
Wind waker blew me away. I was into it from the moment i saw the gameplay on X-play lol.
All my friends hated it. I always enjoyed more stylized art. But i also skipped N64 so this was my first 3D Zelda game... it had a PROFOUND effect on me. By this installment the 3D element was fully realized and they had a lot of time to perfect it.
I can't make my mind up whether Legend of Zelda 1, Link to the Past, or Wind waker is my favorite in the series, because they all blew me away at the time of their release, but nostalgia points me to the original.
EDIT: I have NOT played Breath of the wild... i'm waiting for the inevitable upgraded Switch model to dive in. I hope Nintendo releases something soon, or i'll cave in lol. Iv'e messed with the PC port of it, but i want the real deal, on real hardware!

The handheld games have been their own world for many years until the 3DS when we got the ports of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and the system had it's very own A Link Between Worlds calling back to and expanding upon the SNES game. Now with Breath of the Wild it's kind of the perfect time to reflect back on the handheld Zelda games. I think the handheld only Zelda days are behind us with Switch. From the Gameboy through DS and 3DS there's a lot of Amazing games and my love for the entire series started with Link's Awakening. I don't know if we will ever get those bite size handheld games again but I would love if Capcom completed the 3rd Oracle game from the Gameboy Color games and released it on the Nintendo Switch; very similar to how Nintendo had the old Starfox code/plans but with Capcom (or Grezzo or an appropriate dev) who could finish the Oracle series as intended. It's pretty ambitious that Capcom finished 2/3 of the Oracle Games in the short amount of time they did and had them come out as some very strong cult classics. Everyone who played those Oracle games, including myself, seems to love them. Minish Cap is another fantastic GBA game but I think it's practically too short without a remake adding new content to really justify doing a remaster. Will Minish Cap forever remain on the tiny GBA? Seems somewhat appropriate considering the small size of the Gameboy. I remember thinking GBA cartridges were to tiny back in the day and now a tiny piece of plastic smaller than my pinky nail holds terabytes of amazing games from generations. I just get so nostalgic for Zelda and I've always leaned towards the handheld games as much or likely even more than the console games. I've even preferred playing a lot of the games originally created for console better as handheld experiences. Ocarina of Time on 3DS was a well done remaster visually and with performance. Majora's Mask was made even better on 3DS and also got the visual facelift. I wouldn't want to go back to playing Majora's Mask especially on an N64. Having all these games on Switch is great. I hope Nintendo brings a few Zelda GB/GBC/GBA games to Nintendo Switch Online NSO when/if it's officially announced. I know you already know about the games but I watch the channel to hear about YOUR experiences and to hear the things you loved and didn't like. It's very comforting hearing you reminise on your gaming days and I feel many parallels with my own upbringing. We played the same systems. I was born in 89 and my family played Gameboys and the original NES until the n64 came out so when we got n64 it was like my mind was blown by the graphics. The Super Nintendo didn't exist in my childhood, it was a rumor to my small world where the backyard was cornfield as far as the eyes could see. A neighbor down the road had a Sega Genesis and before we moved to Chicago a Sega Saturn I never got to play and I remember loving NBA Jam but aside from occasionally playing Sega with a friend it was me and my older brothers and friends playing NES and Gameboy. Gahhhh I'm writing so much I may as well make a video. If you reply to this comment I will make a video about it.

My favorite on console is Zelda 2 on the NES. It was the one I owned as a kid and I love how tight the combat is and how challenging it is.

Ocarina of Time was my first Zelda game and then I played A Link to the Past on an emulator a few times and now I finally have it on the SNES classic

Wow... I was looking fwd to your thoughts on majoras mask. Definitely one of the best games ever... In my opinion. Even if you don't like it as much as other titles it is as original a game in the zelda series you will see, even though it reused the Oot engine. The story and villian are a great change of pace.

Favorite of all time: Link to the Past. Never owned it but rented and beat it at least a dozen times. Legend of Zelda and Zelda II were the games I grew up with and loved, but Link to the Past blew both of those games away in my mind when it came out. Breath of the Wild was an amazing experience and I'll probably play it again over the years, but it just couldn't unseat Link to the Past for me.

I honestly haven't spent much time with this series played the first game a bit at a friends on his nes as a kid. Brother and father played the N64 games I watched and then there was the newest game on switch which I watched a buddy play a bit and just bought a copy so here I go!

I finished Zelda 2 for the first time a couple of days ago (mostly without save states) and loved it. You really gotta play a bit until it clicks though.

Before BOTW, my favorite Zelda game was Majora's Mask. Never had a game given me so much adrenaline while playing. That 3-day time limit kept me nervous all the time. The side quests were so interesting, and the atmosphere was so dark. The formula worked for me. I just love Majora's Mask. BTW, John I have to disagree with you here. Majora's Mask IS part of the canonical main series!

A Link to the Past like all SNES adaptations is my favorite but Ocarina of Time is really close, The release of Ocarina of Time was a very big deal and was one of if not the most Revolutionary game to ever release.

The world of The Witcher 3 is bigger and more dynamic than BotW. Playing them back to back, this was clear to me.

I replayed LttP twice in the last month. Once on my New 3DS and again and on New 3DS XL. I'll do it again on the SNES Classic in a couple months too.

For the story, music, art design, and sword moves as well as the bosses and atmosphere (and more reasons) Twilight Princess is my favorite. However for the exploration, interesting npcs, and world Breath of the Wild I believe is the runner up. There are some things that game does so well.

Twighlight Princess has got to be my favorite zelda game to date it blew me away the dark setting and the storyline have got to be the best for me. I do agree with you guys tho the game just came out at an odd time when it should have had an hdmi console to really show off the game.

Johnny ! You should talk about emulation ! i think its a worthy topic since your a retro game collector and i'm soon gonna be collecting retro games again to. But anyways i think you addressing the controversy of emulating games vs collecting them would be a cool thing to listen on to.

After Breath of the Wild's open world approach, and considering that they overwhelmingly succeeded with it... I'm wondering if they'll ever do a Metroid game like that one day. For some reason, even back then when I first played it, I always imagined the very first level of Super Metroid in a 3D "real world" setting (right after coming out of the ship). I could definitely explore an alien open world with Samus and with all the tools at her disposal. I'm sure it'd work.

I love you old bastards. As a 31yr old, there's enough of an age gap between us that I can respect what you're sayin' 'cause you saw and touched the predecessors to these consoles whilst I grew up as they became entertainment standards, especially for boys/guys. Still appreciate what you do, Johnny. And keep on gaming Andrew. Much love from your bigger, badder brother: USA. lol.

I've played every game in the mainline console series and I absolutely agree 100% with John on this one. Breath of the Wild is the best game in the Zelda series but I'll take it a step further for me it's the best game ever made and it's not even really close. Absolute Masterpiece in game design truly a piece of art. Huge world that is alive, stunning graphics, astonishing physics, so much content things to do and collect and max out. Great enemies interesting puzzles... I could type all day... This game is just that good 11 out of 10 for me.
