You're spot on with the immigration thing, Brandon. The inspiration for the books, I believe, was child "evacuees" during ww2. They would send children from the cities that would be in danger of being bombed, out to the country to live with families there. The way Paddington arrives in London with a little tag on him is evocative of the way the children arrived in the countryside by train, with tags on their coats with their names and details on them.
And of course, there were refugees from many other countries following ww2, that looked to Britain for a home who would face similar cultural challenges to Paddington.
I got a bit emotional with the immigrant story parallels. You empathise with every person in history who took an "English" name over their own, the sheer bravery of being alone away from family in a new country, being desperately kind, humble and polite when you just wanted to curl up and cry from the whole overwhelming experience. There was so much subtle yet relatable nuance in this movie. 😭 I agree with other reviewers, this movie should not have been so good and so thoughtful. Easily one of the best "kids" movies of the decade.
In 2018 I was in London on holiday, and while on the train I overheard this group of teenage boys talking about how great Paddington is. These young guys, at the point in life where being tough and cool is everything, were unashamed of their love for this delightful kids movie! I think that's awesome. And it made me realise this movie must be worth checking out.
Paddington is something of a national institution here in the UK. Many of us grew up reading Michael Bond's books and watching the old animated TV show. And these two films are just perfect. Funny, imaginative, heartwarming and utterly delightful from start to finish.
Brandon.... This was a sincere treat to watch again. I absolutely loved Paddington the first time I watched this when it was released... still do! I enjoyed your reactions to Paddington so much... your reactions and comments just added to how much there is to Love about this movie . For me this movie pushed boundaries in movies I usually do not see and it would be a better world if every good home had a Paddington . Thank you so much Brandon . I look forward to many more reactions here .
My 3-year-old was watching this movie constantly a couple years back and so I saw it many times over, but somehow I never got tired of it. Such a clever and entertaining film. It was cool to see its greatness gradually dawning on you over the course of the video! Looking forward to your Paddington 2 reaction! It’s just as good as this one.
25:07 Came back here to comment that this scene takes on whole new meaning now. The Queen celebrated her Platinum Jubilee the other day to mark the 70th anniversary of her being made Queen of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Nations, and during the televised celebrations, there was a short film made of Paddington in Buckingham Palace having tea with the Queen. It’s just all come neatly full circle!
I grew up on the Paddington books and the BBC stop-motion cartoon, but I didn't see this in theaters because the trailers were SO HORRIBLE............fortunately, I finally checked both out and was very pleasantly surprised how well they kept the original stories intact, while finding fun ways to update the characters.
Completely agree. I avoided it for exactly the same reason. I was about to compare the trailer with what I imagine the Peter Rabbit films to be, but hey, maybe those trailers are equally bad and those films are great too! 🙂 (I don't get that impression from the reviews)

The 'Wes Anderson' dolls house at the end is fantastic! Yes Paddington 2 is even better! Sally Hawkins seems to have water scenes as a rider when she signs up for a role - Paddington 2 too... Jim Broadbent (Mr Gruber) was also the villainous Frank Butterman from Hot Fuzz. The guard (Stop that sexy woman) was Simon Farnaby goes on to write Paddington 2.

This movie really impressed me when i 1st watched it has so many great elements there from the combination of upscaled animation, acting directing, color scheme, humour and plot not an easy combination to achieve.
You’re probably gonna be told this but Paddington is a beloved children’s character originally from children’s books, then later adapted into a classic children’s tv series in the 70’s,
The author, on the first book (1958) "It wasn’t written specifically for children, but I think I put into it the kind things I liked reading about when I was young." The books already felt old when I read them or had them read to me in the 70's, these movies really manage to revitalize the charm. The uninspired flooding tub scene is about the only flaw, I think. In the sequel, a certain actor is surprisingly good.
