- Attorneys Allison and Rachel talk through the main differences and similarities in the Aid and Attendance or A&A and The Caregiver Program. They are two different VA Disability Extra Monthly Compensation or Special Monthly Compensation benefits which are also known as SMC benefits.
The Aid and Attendance is specifically for the veteran and The Caregiver is paid to the person who is taking care of the veteran.

We applied for the caregiver program and we were denied. My husband is 100% P&T with TBI and other injuries. He needs help with several of his daily living activities. He’s not allowed to drive or use the stove. They told me “we don’t think he would benefit from a caregiver.” I ended up quitting my job to take care of him full time. Before promoting these “benefits” just know they are in shambles and are terribly difficult to get.
Oh wow thank you for this information
They deny everyone. You just have to keep applying. They told me to learn to live life with one hand and to get over it and stop applying. And I think they are stealing the money claiming they are giving it to veterans
That’s not right, you should contact the patient advocate at the VA
Get a 21-2680 filled out and appeal to the board it might get reversed
I was max tier in the caregiver program for like 9 years, they changed the rules, suddenly I "wasnt qualified." Caused a divorce, was married 16 years.
@darkhorseparatrooper thanks for this information
Wait you go divorced over that.. Your better off without her then. How gross of a human do you have to be to leave because your not getting paid now to be there with your husband. Just rent one its easier, you can literally find them on google. if you can't figure it out lmk and I will call you and walk you through it
Any program with a less than 30% approval rate does NOT help Veterans. Y’all need to start taking denial cases!!
They only take cases that are very easy to win. And I think the Care giver program is stealing the money and claiming they are giving it to veterans
The caregiver program is an absolute mess. While applying should absolutely happen, expect to get denied without proper identification of why you were denied. Then expect a huge delay in processing an appeal of a denial. VHA has no idea what they're doing with these appeals.
They told me to apply aid and attendance instead, and there is no explanation why.
@@robertlee810 If you feel you are entitled then you should appeal. I just received my supplemental claim appeal results after a little over a 2 year wait. Still denied but the denial is in accordance with CFR so that makes appeal to the board much easier. If you feel you are entitled then continue to fight but the caregiver program will continue to deny all but the most severe cases. A&A has a much lower thresholds for approval.
You have to be services connect to qualify for this benefit as far as I know.
If you’re married to a services connected veteran and meet the criteria you can get both.
Denied three times for a 100 p and t veteran. I have applied under the SPI portion of the program. It’s a total joke, and a hell of a humiliating process to go thru. All the social workers making the decisions should be fired.
Are social workers the correct professionals to evaluate medical needs?
@@stephanieknowles7586 what do you think??? Did they go to medical school?
Agree! My VA doctor referred me to the caregiver program because she felt I was an ideal candidate based on my condition and ADL needs. This has been extensively documented throughout my VA med record. Yet, I was denied the first 2 times with clear cut evidence showing I met the criteria. I was only approved after my 3rd stroke episode hospitalization where the light bulb finally went off in their heads, and finally got approved. I agree that doctors should be making these decisions, not social workers. This is the cause and reason for so many denials. I am truly sorry for all other vets out there having a difficult time. God be with you all if you attempt to file again. 🙏🏼💯
I can't use my right hand. Told me to learn to live life with one hand. Then said that you have to be in a vegetative state to get it. As in on a feeding tube. I think they are stealing the money and claiming they are giving it to veterans. They need to be investigated
Would that cancel SMC-S? Well, you answered it, and yes, you can get both, cool. Thank you.
Can I apply for the SMCL rating under Care keeper program as 100% Disabled veteran who will be receiving help from the care keeper?
This is a really good video. Thanks
Care giver is impossible to get They just Laugh at you and tell you to keep applying
What do you do to get a caregiver if you’re single and living alone? I need 24/7 help, not a 3 hour X 3 visits per week house cleaner. I need someone to buy my groceries, understands my detairy needs and knows how to cook the proper meals. I also have reached the point where I need someone to give me my medication at the proper times. I’m 100% P & T and I’m in stage 4 Parkinson’s, receiving chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and I have CAD. All from exposure to Agent
Orange in Vietnam. And I have ratings for each of these conditions. But I don’t know where to start to apply for full time care inside of my own home.
You should have a home health nurse. Let your PCP know
How is $1400 a month a significant amount of money for a caregiver. Even at $2800 (level 2) it's not really that much money considering house payments are $3k and car payments with expenses exceed $1k.
Thanks for sharing
What are the qualifications to get both, can i apply i am 90% PT 10% TDIU FOR over 10 yrs.
Is this possible to get for veterans living overseas? Above and beyond aid and attendance.
you can't get both AA and care giver.
@@SpaceRanger187yes you can. 1 is from the vba the other vha.
@@israelbrewton5742 Doesn't matter, you can't get both
