- The Kia Sorento is a large seven-seat SUV that features grippy four-wheel drive and comes with Kia's excellent seven-year/100,000-mile warranty. Rivals include the new Nissan X-Trail and Hyundai Santa Fe - both of which also have seven seats - although buyers may also consider the likes of the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 or even the Land Rover Discovery, which are only five-seaters, but still very spacious in their own right. The Honda, Nissan and Mazda are available with four-wheel drive, but some versions of those models are front-wheel drive only.

Sometimes I don't get Matt. Nobody buys this car looking for a sporty type feeling. It's all about comfort and practicality in this car!

irGuilty Well, you most certainly will not drive it off road, and most people use this type of cars on some nice b-roads as you call it in england and they want it to be sporty.

I'm simply here to convey what a car is good at and what it is not so good at... then you make up YOUR own mind as to which features/ attributes matter most to you. Some people don't care if a 4x4 is sporty - they just want it to be comfy. Others DO care - that's why Porsche and BMW sell loads of sporty SUVs. It's my job to report on all aspects of a car for all potential buyers - and if it's not so good at a certain task then I state an alternative car which is superior in that specific area so people can make sure they pick the best car for their own needs. Hope this makes sense.
Kia is whopping ass and improving with every iteration, while the Germans like Mercedes and Bmw are just slacking and getting shittier, and hoping their badges and past reputation alone will garner a sale.

German cars can be bad for electrical gremlins as per my mechanic friend
But the Kia won't go wrong like the Discovery and the 2.2 diesel still gives nearly 200 bhp..... Yes it is more expensive but still is 10K cheaper than an equivalent lower end premium.

Great Review but no mention of full size spare wheel (under the car) and self levelling suspension? Things the discovery sport, or any car in the compact SUV bracket do not have. To my mind this car competes with the Discovery, XC90, Q7. it is not as good as any of them, but then it is around 15 grand cheaper.
Seriously... nobody drives large SUVs that are manual....

MatWatsonCars thanks for your response and I agree with what you say. Your reviews are usually spot on. Still though? A sporty 7 seater?
What car would you choose. A comfy seven seater or a comfy AND sporty seven seater? Certainly not a must-have, but better. And better handling also means more safety.
I bought a 2015 Sorento a few months back and I absolutely love it. We are just back in the West of Ireland from a trip to France and the car performed flawlessly. 2 adult, 4 kids and a full boot and roof box and the car never lacked in power. 200bhp and over 400nm of torque, perfectly adequate, but you are correct Matt in the saying about pulling away in too high a gear.
The only problem criticism i have Is some of the plastics feel a little cheap and the centre console around the gear shift and handbrake tend to creak a lot. Also the stereo on mine is rubbish.
But over all the car is really good and I would happily buy another in a few years.
So you're happily standing behind your new Kia and it thankfully hits you in your face with it's tailgate 😄

Why do car reviewers always talk about how sporty cars feel?
Why can't they review cars without talking about sports as though everyone is interested in chucking their cars around corners like a bunch of delinquent kids
Design-wise this is a really nice car! I've said this before but I'm saying it again: way better design on Kias than on Hyundais!
And about sportiness on an SUV...my feeling is that only journalists really care about it. I bet a normal buyer doesn't really care as long as the car drives ok and feels safe on the road (meaning is not like a boat, jumping all over the place).

I have watched a video car of the year 2014.Bmw x5 vs porsche macan vs toyota kluger vs kia sorento.I can't believe that the kia won and beated the porsche and the BMW.I wonder why is it cheap.I thik it's the best.Thanks Mat.

Do you rally need a big 7 seater to be sporty, Matt? I don't think so, and stop comparing it to the Land Rover Sport wich has one of the lowest reliability scores, day to night as you said.

Too bad the in ASEAN region the SUV is underspec even for premium batch.
find it hilarious when u said land rover is better in terms of ride and handling, how much are the price differences?ofcourse those are better cars because they are on whole different class, compare this to crv xtrail and mazdas, i think they are not far away from kia sorento, plus kia offers more space and features than all those cars
Kia are certainly getting there with this SUV pretty soon they will be up there with the big guns they have come on in leaps and bounds
When you see the tech you get on the top model £42000 kx4 version co pared to a similarly priced disco sport it's a no brainier the Kia is the better choice

damn wished it was the automatic version, wanted to hear opinion on that one because I've heard that it kind of downshifts into wrong gear when putting the pedal down to the floor.
Anyone else who thinks suspension is harsh?
So, I just got mine today, a 2016 model. I purchased it unseen, and have never tried a Sorento before. But according to this review, and many others, the suspension is said to be soft, and comfy.. I love the car, but the suspension is really hard, especially at the rear. I always glide along, and don't need it to be sporty, so I thouth it would be perfect. But now I'm thinking about googling for softer absorbers or springs.. coming from a really comfy 17'Optima, I thouth this one would be even better, but no.
its comfy for an suv. ppl that never owned one expect them to be softer than sedans, but suvs are never as comfortable
as a korean.. hearing the british pronunciation of HYUNDAI is cringe-worthy... aghhhh
Pretty sure the gearbox is hard and clunky because barely anyone orders it with a manual.

Oh Dear, what a silly thing to say! It's a bit expensive for a Kia. Just to demonstrate why this is a ridiculous thing to say, it's the same as saying (when revueing a Mercedes) that's it's a bit cheap for a Mercedes. So, if the Kia was made of gold, would you still say, it's expensive for a Kia? Of course not, because you revue the vehicle, not the brand.
Kia obviously copied Mazda's design language and miserably failed...also I bet that automatic key recognition and hatch opening system is far from helpful under a lot of situations.
What if I stand behind the car with a key and do not want tail gate to open?
Good advice.
On that note, what if I'm telling the would-be carjacker that in fact this is NOT my car ... when the tail gate makes me a liar!

Wondering the same thing. This is a large SUV, Discovery Sport is mid-sized. This is 7 seats, Discovery Sport is 5+2. If you must compare it with a Land Rover then the Discovery is a better comparison size-wise but it is double the price. Kia have created this to compete with the Pathfinder and the Santa Fey I suspect.
MrPeterthepilot Agreed, the Santa Fey is the direct comparison and they both compete in the full size 4x4 market. Compact suv's do not have full size spare wheels, or as much room, but as always when talking about car's horses for courses.

From this review, it's obvious that the Land Rover Discovery Sport is better value for money, it handles better, it has a much more expensive feeling interior, it certain looks better, and it's much better priced. Its ironic but so true that premium marques are actually often better value for money.
For the price of this Kia I would rather spend a little more on the new XC90. It is a true 7 seater with very good boot space when all 7 seats are up, it is safer, quicker, more economical, will last much longer than the cheap Kia and will hold it's value! Just think about it, who wants to buy a used Kia???

Your comment about Volvo being Chinese just shows how much you know about cars. Yes, Volvo is owned by the Chinese car maker Geely who is pretty much Volvo's sugar daddy, but Volvo is still proudly a Swedish company.
The Chinese are not stupid, they know not to mess around with Volvo and to keep production in Sweden and soon in the U.S. They don't want to ruin Volvo's reputation as they know that if they don't let Volvo do what it wants to do, then their investment will be wasted.
Yes, some Volvo's are made in China but those are for the Chinese market only, with the exception the S60L which will be offered in the U.S.

Lucky man you said you "had" a Kia C'eed. What happened to it if it was so good? Of course things start to go wrong with all cars after a while, but the Koreans still don't have the same reliability as the Japanese when it comes to how long a car will last. I think you misunderstood me when I said cheaper to buy. Before new Korean cars were a little cheaper to buy than Japanese and European makes but now as the Koreans have gone more upmarket, this is not the case so much now. As you said every car loses value when they get older, but used Korean cars have less appeal than used Japanese and European cars. It's great to hear that you have had no problems with your cars :)
