Engine failure doesn’t commonly happen on the 3.3. The one common issue you have missed is a faulty 4wd coupler causing vibration when starting from a stop.

Wow thank you. I have a 2014 Kia Sorrento have all the issues you mentioned. I’ve had to replace bulbs at least 4 times within a short space of time. When I drive it does make the rattling sound. I’m fearing I’ll need to replace the engine (which is covered under warranty) but the wait at the dealership is over 2 weeks. They said if I drop it off it will take 2 weeks… this is frustrating

Bought the 2016 Kia Sorento, had it for about 4 years just hit 95k miles, did my regular maintenance, I was heading towards Vegas with my wife, all of a sudden, check Engine light came on at 10pm middle of no where. The car started to slow down didn’t have any service, had to walk to the gas station, tow the car back home which costed 1k bucks. Took the car to the kia service shop, and found out that the we needed a new Engine!!! Rod bearings gave out.. really disappointed. Not sure if it’s going to be under manufacture warranty..

Own a 2015 Sorento EX, purchased it almost 3 years ago when it had 95,000 miles on it. Was extremely hesitant to purchase a vehicle with that many miles on it, but it was one owner, very well taken care of and had all maintenance records and Carfax report was clean. I now have 153,000 miles on it and have literally had 0 issues with it and runs and drives like brand new. Obviously, I keep up with regular maintenance and don’t drive it like crazy but love my sorento!

I know there have been problems and recalls for the first few years, but I figured the 2019 and 2020 models should be all sorted out as long as proper maintenance was done regularly. I was really considering trading in my 2015 Sportage LX AWD with less than 110,000 km (69000 miles) for a Sorento V6 EX AWD, preferably a 2020 with lower mileage than mine, so I can tow a 3000lb trailer, plus whatever is in the car. Would you advise against that? These issues seem minor if the oil is topped up and changed often.

It is a liftime extension of warranty even to second owners. You mayneed to dig deep and call multiple dealerships for them to find the exact documentation on it. Found myself here because of #5 - total engine failure due to lack of oil (and lack of warning - oil pressure light.). If you buy a 3rd Gen Sorento make sure you get the software update specifically for this issue - you will have a lifetime warranty on your engine. The 4 Cylinder Sorento engines burn oil after 50k miles and you will not be warned about low oil pressure. Learn from my mistake - my engine wasn’t covered. Frankly, I’d just stay away from these cars altogether but if you do buy one, get the update.

I don't buy the headlight theory that the wiring resistance is too low. The headlight bulbs are designed for a specified voltage range of alternator voltage for all 12V vehicles. The problem can only be that the alternator control of output is poor, or possibly the headlight units are sufering a high degree of vibration or physical shock. I am an electronics engineer

FYI; class action lawsuit in the US was settled for 3/4 of a billion and another lawsuit pending in Canada related to engine failure in Kia cars/SUVs for certain years. Main culprit seems to be 2.0 litre GDI which is prone to total failure. Just happened to me. 2015 Kia Sorento with only 62,000 km (about 40,000 miles). Kia Motors authorized dealer to replace the engine with a new one. Probably a $10,000 repair job if I had to pay for it. Apparently the problem is metal debris from manufacturing process clogging the oil ports you showed, leading to bearing failure at which point the engine self-destructs. Oil changes and top ups are not going to prevent this. But be sure to change oil regularly as Kia asks to see records that this has been done.

Most of these engine issues are with the 4cyl version. The V6 is a pretty bullet proof engine. I have a 2020 Sorento SX V6 AWD with 39k on it and it's been SUPER reliable. And it has a nice throaty growl on cold start up and when accelerating. The only thing i had a problem with since i bought it used in like new condition. Was the shifting between gears on a cold start would skip or lurch the vehicle forward until the engine warmed up. It's a fairly common problem i read on various Sorento forums online. However, that was solved by the dealership running a flush and re-program of the gears. And it's been smooth as butter since.

You may be a good mechanic, but you are a horrible electrician. Too much current coming down the wires? Not enough resistance? No vehicle manufacturer designs extra resistance in any wiring harness... lamps would be too dim from the voltage drop, not burn out. The job of every wiring harness is to deliver more than enough current to the appliance its connects. If there needed to be limited current, they would install a resistor or current regulator... and NOT rely on minute wiring resistance. Feel the base of the bulb to see if it is too hot? Are you kidding? The bulb makes the heat... if the wiring is making that much heat, there wouldn't be a blown bulb, but rather a very dim bulb from bad wiring or bad wiring connection - undersized wires that are heating up deliver less current, not more. Therefore, your statement of wiring needing to limit current but not get hot is completely contradictory. These bulbs are burning out too often because the housing begins to absorb lamp heat after a few years of use. The reflectors and internal lenses fog up over time holding in more heat, and with no ventilation, the bulbs overheat beyond operating specs and burn out. It's a waste of money to change the wiring harness to stop premature bulb life. Sure, there could certainly be alternator issues, but that's not the common problem that cause headlamp failure. Alternator issues would quickly show up in other accessories way before blowing a headlamp. Stick to mechanics... you are misinforming the public about wiring with your gross lack of knowledge. It's tough enough finding reasonable answers without you guessing with unauthorized authority.

    • @martinbutyn
      @martinbutyn 3 года назад +1

Yes absolutely true. The bulb will draw the power it needs and nothing more. High voltage will be an issue with the electronics before the bulbs. He is misinforming the people. Best way to treat this would be to drill some holes in the back cover towards the bottom to allow air through to stop heat buildup.

The voltage output of the alternator could be too high OR not enough heat is being dissipated from the bulb by its socket OR both. I'd check the alternator /regulator output with a 'scope. If that's OK, I'd try to get rid of more heat from the bulb by using thermal- conducting grease (like they use to mate a transistor/FET to its heatsink) on the socket's contacts, both electrical and metal-to-metal. I'd also try to increase the area of the metal flange of the socket to do the same if the grease doesn't help. Maybe the"harness replacement" could work because they've re-designed the socket/harness to dissipate the heat. All any wire can do is resist the flow of electrons. The thicker the wire the more current it can pass without causing a "voltage drop" (e.g. heat). To say the harness/wires are allowing too much current to the bulb is misleading. That implies that the manufacturer intended the wire to act as a "resistor" between the alternator and the bulb. I'ts more likely that the manufacturer skimped on the size of the wire to save a few bucks! Copper aint cheap no more! It's the load (the bulb's filament resistance) which establishes the demand for the alternator's/battery's current in the circuit. Perhaps the manufacturer of the bulb decided he wanted a brighter output and threw caution to the wind... or it's a cheap filament for the specified/required output (China?). Then again, perhaps it's the initial surge of current hitting that filament, causing it to break after so many cycles of off-to-on. To combat that, I'd insert a "choke" to slow that in-rush of current. Yes, I can get pretty deep but 65 years in electronics will do that to ya! Good luck all!

I drive a 2015 Kia Sorento LX(base model) like this and I have abt. 79,000 miles on it now. Bought it used with 60,000 miles. Once I hit around like 75,000 miles, I was driving on a long highway and all of a sudden, I heard a boom clank! And then engine light came on. It wasn’t going even though I was pressing the gas and I was in the middle lane which was scary but eventually got to shoulder of road. It wouldn’t drive past 25 mph. We took it to family friend mechanic and they said it was a broken knock sensor. Was about to pick it up the next day and said there’s more issues with it that they couldn’t figure out. We had it towed to Kia dealership. KIA SORENTO 2015 HAVE ENGINE RECALLS!! the people at Kia said “yea that happens a lot” um! Pls check and make sure yalls engines are up to date! They replaced my whole engine with no charge. Also, when I got the car two years ago, I immediately switched the lights and had them customized to a brighter bulb which makes it so much better to see. The Kia Sorento lx 2015 had a poor rating in headlights.

I have a 2015 Kia Sorento EX v6 that I purchased in 2015 with 28k miles. It is now 2023 and I have 240k miles on it & it drives like new. I had issues when it was about 80k miles that warranty mostly covered ( 2 alternators, the motherboard and the EVO radio which also controls the backup camera). The last 160k miles have been relatively trouble free except for routine maintenance. I have had the headlight bulb issue but found using bulb grease helps longevity by giving a better connection.

Not sure if it’s going to be under manufacture warranty.

Great video! I just bought a used 2017 Kia Sorento at auction, which is my second Sorento. I have a 2015 that has (Knocks on wood) had ZERO problems. This video was a great informational video, I was unaware of the head light issue. I'll be on the lookout for that if I have failures with the bulb.
    Quick RFI.
My 2017 has several issues and my code reader listed 5 codes, two of which were misfires. I got a kit that had all four plugs and coils so I went a head and replaced all four sets. However, the misfire on cylinder four remains. The connector and wires look good to me.
Any suggestions on what to check next?

Wow, I have had a 2017 Sorento LX with a 3.3L six since new. I also have a 2008 hyundia santa fe with a 2.7L six. I have not had these problems in either vehicle. I don't think the problems are as common as you say. I have only replaced one headlight bulb. There is clicking once in a while BUT, I do all the repairs myself and keep the oil filled. Once I had the check engine / misfire happen and it was a very minor issue. A short drive with the code reader and the issue was found and quickly solved.
You seem to be making these videos for people that can't even do maintenance. I think you are really overstating problems.
I think the worst part of the sorento are its brakes. In the mountains, they heat up and fade very quickly and I don't ride the brakes. Worst I have ever seen. Upgrading the rotors and pads really makes the brakes work better.

Most people i hear about having issues are folks who dont take care of it to well. I go camping a lot so usually check things frequently. I already had O2 sensor done covered under warranty at 32k miles i have done passenger balljoint, four shocks upgraded to KYB along with KYB strut mounts. Front sway bar links and passenger inner outter tie rods. Upgraded my lights to led which might be why they do not burn out. I usually just use Orielley auto parts simply because they are oe. LED bulbs generally do not run on 12v so there is a DC to DC inverter to get the correct LED voltage built in. = The changing range of input DC (for this KIA) is buffered somewhat = much less voltage fluctuation (if any) going to the bulbs. You could also try some "conductive grease" on the OEM connections.
= quality led bulbs should fix this situation.
