When I was in college a friend of mine's father had a 240 wagon with over 200,000 miles on it and it still ran like it was new. Those 240s weren't exciting to drive but they could hold up for years.
The #1 not so secret reason of Volvo reliability, is most of them being overbuilt and under stressed. I'm extremely proud to own a Mk2 V70 2.4l 5cyl 10-valve SOHC non-turbo with 215k miles. It's from the first production batch, so it has almost no driver assists and luxury options making it very simple and unlikely to break down even electronically. Not a single engine issue and only needed timing belt, brakes, and PCV system cleaning/replacement.
Our fleet consists of a 1985 Volvo 240 sedan and a 1985 Volvo 240 wagon. Have had the sedan since 1989 and the wagon since 2005. Great cars, reliable and relatively easy to work on (EVERYTHING is done 'in house'). Currently about 250K on the odometers.
I'm from the UK. Years ago I bought a 245 Volvo Estate which I paid £450 sterling for and I did over 100,000 miles in that thing and sold it for £480. I wish I still had it. Great video Scotty 👍😁
I had a 1982 245 with Heavy Duty front and rear sway bars and 1000 pound variable rate rear springs. Loved to drift that car on exit/entrance ramps, tires howling and under total control What a total sleeper
I had a Volvo 740 GLE stationwagon with the same engine, used it to get my family about, had four kids, and managed to travel from the UK to Belgium and France fully loaded with holiday gear, had a rear facing trunk seat which folded down when not in use, lovely cruiser would do 100 mph all day long, just mind the corners lol.
@@afisemenaborevlaka48 Well actually they are continuing selling station wagons but are very few and the minivans are more popular than station wagons so that is why they are more minivans than station wagons right now on the market
i got a toyota matrix for free, not from a friend or family it was literally posted on facebook for free, and i used it for over 200,000 miles. no issues with engine or transmission.
@@sacramentofoodforest on god, it was owned by an older couple and their son said it was "too old" for them to be driving so he got them to get a new Rav4. It was just sitting so they gave it away.
also bought a 2010 chevy impala a couple years ago for $800, put $1000 into it to get it inspected and registered, been using it for 2 years now. put 40k miles on it so far still going strong.
I still daily my 89 240, which I bought 4 years ago with 1800CAD, rust free. The most ironic scene is when I pick up my friends from the dealership because their new, fancy BMW and Audi is broken in 1 year. As for now , none of them still drives what they bought back in the day, either traded for something else or sold. Granted they got deep pockets, but that doesn't stop their car from breaking down.
Several years ago, I had picked out a Volvo Wagon just like this one at a used car lot. The salesman I dealt with told me, I didn't need the Volvo Wagon and chose for me a Nissan Murano instead that didn't last me but a few years before it's transmission gave me issues. I was quite young at the time. Had I known what I know today, I would have told that salesman to sell me the Volvo or else I'm not buying anything.
You should have bought the Volvo. Nissan is notorious for having shitty transmissions. Last month a friend of mine had to spend $6,000 on a transmission for her 2015 Nissan Sentra. The car only has 100K miles.
@@richierich007007 Yes, I should have purchased the Volvo. Like I mentioned I was much younger and didn't know how to choose cars. There are a few more cars I should have purchased and several I should have never purchased! I've wasted thousands on no good cars in the past.
I sold cars for Nissan for about a year. I sold some new Nissans. But most of my sales were used cars and I usually sold anything but the used Nissans. I knew the transmissions were bad. I had a couple come in looking at a used Nissan Rogue and I convinced them to look at a Volvo XC70. Since they had 2 kids and wanted something safe but reliable. I told them there is no safer car on this lot than that Volvo. They bought it and still drive it. This was back in 2019.
I had a wagon just like that 240. Dependable as a tank. It just kept going. Safety was the most steadfast thing in those vehicles. Wouldn't mind finding another from that era.
In the 1980s in the Uk the Volvo estate car (meaning a station wagon) was a badge of middle-class respectability - perfect for carrying children to school, golf clubs, dogs or shopping from Marks and Spencer. They weren't meant to be stylish or sporty because safety and reliability were the key qualities, just as Scotty says. Volvo later tried to become more fashionable but lost their market to Mercedes and BMW estate cars which are still the chariots of the solid middle class today.
Same here, 1991 VW Jetta I bought 22 years ago for 1500 bucks when it had 134k miles on it and now it's got over 350k miles on it with the original transmission and engine. Only thing that stopped working was the AC and it does burn 1/2 quart of oil every 3000 miles, but that's not bad if you ask me. My insurance on the car has been under 500 bucks per year. I only get 25mpg around town, but I'm not gonna complain. I have to admit I have been changing the oil every 3k miles and transmission fluid every 30k miles and I basically baby the car and don't drive it like a speed demon so that's probably why it's lasted so long.
In 2011 I picked up a 2005 Impala with 87k, for $5,000 I've put another 200k on it since then, no problems other than usual wear stuff. Never been a GM fan, but this one has been a pleasant surprise. But yeah, inexpensive used cars are almost impossible to find anymore
I can't wait until you put out the video from my brother when he came up there Friday with the Toyota Corolla Hatch. The 6 speed made in Japan blue with the black top, Lou.. My "fun" car is a 2009 Volvo C70 convertible and it is indeed a wonderful car (T5 5 cylinder motor so a little smoother than a 4 cylinder). Went to Sweden 3 times, first time ended up with a Fiat rental, second time a BMW diesel and 3rd time a Mercedes GLA250 so I finally had to buy a Volvo just to drive one. I'm hunting for 2014 or earlier xc70 because those were before Ford sold Volvo to the Chinese. I'm not sure what the quality is like after that (my 2009 is from when Ford owned Volvo so it shares a lot of parts from Ford Focus and is part of the same chassis system but I liked my Ford Focus and CMax Energi commuter cars as well). My brother had a 240DL wagon for decades. Only issue was the Cat caught fire driving in the mountains - actually it overheated and the carpet started smoldering. Luckily there was snow on the ground. After that I bought fire extinguishers for all my cars because without that snow, we would have been stranded in Pennsylvania.
I have a 2013 XC60, it’s the best car I have ever owned. It have had 6 Toyotas and Lexus’s in the past 35 years and driven Mercedes E Series, 2010 Rolls Royce and my Volvo is the most solid and reliable car.
Scotty thanks again for another awesome video. Old school Volvos definitely were built like tanks made to last. By the way make sure you camera lens is clean. I think you had a fingerprint smudge on the top left of your lens. Otherwise keep up the great work!
Reminds me of my first car I had it was a 1975 Ford Elite I bought for $600 Dollars and it had 98,000 miles on it died later at 356,000 miles on the original 351Windsor Engine! I was young and I used to drag race it all the time. I would probably be still driving if I had only babied it! But sure loved how it sounded when I down shifted it Wooop Wooooo!😁😁😁😁😁😁
I bought A 1968 Volvo P1800 in 1978 with 120K, In 1980 I outran a new unmarked police cruiser. But he got my license number and a week later a knock came at the door. It was the cop. He said that he was going to issue me several citations. He asked me what kind of engine was in the car since he couldn't keep up with me. I told him that it was a stock 4 cylinder engine. He said that that was an impossibility since he had a 426 V8 in the Pontiac he was driving and he couldn't catch me. I took him outside and opened the hood. He was stunned. By the way, I didn't receive a single ticket. I found out later that since I outran him, he couldn't place me in the car.
I have a manual 83 Volvo 240 that is probably close to 300k now (Odometer stopped), and I’ve had to repair a few things, but it’s the original engine (as far as I know), and runs pretty well
I paid $2000 Australian for a 2001 Corolla in 2015 with 300,000kms on the clock and I have put another 250,000 kms on top of that now sitting at just under 600,000kms and runs perfectly fine with regular maintenance and oil change every 10,000 kms , it should go for another 200,000kms I reckon. Best $2000 I have ever spent. Cheaper than major service on my weekend car.
@@fredzag2452 when looking for a cheap reliable car. You got to keep it simple standard automatic transmission not that CVT rubbish and a simple 1.8 litre 4 cylinder engine, no turbo rubbish and no other major electronics to go wrong. Yes she’s not pretty, she not fast, but she gets the job done every time without fail. Cost me about $200 each year in parts and I service it myself. TOYOTA COROLLA what a fantastic car.
I've got an 2001 Camry wagon 5 spd 4 banger it had 304k kms 2015 and now its on 445k km's. Feb this year the head gasket went and it took me 6 or 7 weeks to fix it on the weekends, and I'm not a trained mechanic! The first weekend after I fixed it I did a one thousand k round trip in it, now its done almost 11k kms... Timing belt did Dec or Jan, and Head Valve seals also so its not a rocket science design, I'm just a truck driver... now I'm driving worry free again. Starter 10 minute job, Alternator same, Radiator was original at 21 years old and that plastic just cracked a few months ago, that took a couple of hours start to finish, but still not much, and I still get 8.6 litres per 100k's travel average, down to 8 or 7.9 liters per 100k on open road, its still a really economical car, and full sized wagon also.
i bought my 2001 ford e150 camper van with the 4.6 for 1800. it only had 117000 miles and was in great shape. you can still find great deals out there.
I drove a 1974 new Volvo Station Wagon and it was so impressive at the time. Would definitely buy another of the time period you predict were among the better Volvos. Didn't know the Chinese had purchased Volvo. That's sad.
Like to see you do a video on an 1st design Scion XB. The best car I ever owned. Michigan car with 360000. Rusty rockers because they put these plastic covers on the rockers but nice structural design. Car still jacks up one side with jack in the front. Just now starting to replace some wear items. I love this car so much I bought a 2015 RAV 4 thinking it would be the same quality. A piece of crap, sold it 2 years later.
Get an old Buick 3800 from 1995 on and you'll get the same reliability and longevity, and much more than 20mpg on the highway. The smallish Regal gets 29mpg on the highway.
I bought a ‘92 240 fir $700 nine years ago …. still have it. Drive it all the time. Odometer stuck at 65K … I estimate it has about 130K. If you find an old one in good shape, they are a keeper.
I owned one,1994 940 wagon. For 8 years. Can't find them anymore. rwd only horrible in the snow. Bad mpg, 22 on avg. Terrible on the highway 4 sp transmission, 3 k rpm at 60 mph.
the last of the great Volvo's. they were built like tanks and well equipped for their time. Volvo proved you can build a simple powerful 4-cylinder mid sized engine that's torquey reliable and goes on as much as Scotty 😊
Bought a 2000 Volvo XC90 at 80,000 great amazing car. Until the front transfer gearbox blew up. Replaced it. New one lasted 18,000 miles. I heard it going so pulled the driveshaft. Drove it another 20K miles, it sits in my barn. I replaced the tires (Michelin) and 10K miles on them went so I put a new one on the car. You can't do that. All tires must be the same diameter or the stress is too much for that gearbox. Replace one, replace all. That's junk.
I would love to know what goes through the minds of Scotty's neighbors as they look at the window and see him flinging his arms around as he talks into this phone walking around an old Volvo - must generate some interesting stories...
Had a 73 164. Early fuel injection. Not great mileage. Not available as a wagon. They didn't make many 164s. It had that orangey caramel interior like this one. Should have kept it a lot longer.😂
Volvo have under Geely, gone back to the old solid made Volvo.Take a XC60, built in Sweden and made with Boron super strong steel , they have been out for 20 years, and, no deaths in accidents, that shows you a great car. Try a XC60 if you have never driven one, try it,sold tank, for your loved ones.
I am usually very stingy about car aesthetics. I love my Ford and Chevy aesthetics and Dodge too. Yeah a lot arent manufacture in the US anymore, but I cant help but prefer them over anything foreign With the exception of Volvo. Every time I see a Volvo with the classic sharp angles (not the more modern curvy Volvos) i cant help but appreciate just how damn beautiful those cars are.
95% of the time the car is parked 4.99999999999999999% of the time it's driven 0.00000000000000001% of the time it's looked at If it takes me from A to B, I don't care if it looks like a PT Cruiser or a Lamborghini Miura.
I prefer a wagon to an SUV. Mine is brand new, by comparison, it's only an 05;) I fully expect my transmission to outlast me...the clutch is another story, it's a manual;)
When I was growing up (I’m 50 now) Volvos had a reputation for being slow but incredibly safe vehicles. A little better than the safety reputation that Subaru has today. The reason they don’t really rust is it snows in Sweden, and if you’ve ever met a Swedish engineer, you’d know it’s unacceptable (According to the Swedish engineers OCD) for the car to rust.
I had one. lemon. insulation fell off the wiring . My mother had one. lemon. Insulation ....sister. lemon. I got another. lemon. ex has one. she likes it but its expensive to keep running.
I've got 3 old volvos, one is a 240 with a 940 turbo engine, just coming up to 200,000 miles, tuned to 200hp, goes really well, the others are 940s, ones a turbo and ones an na, both fantastic cars, drive them to france and back no problem can get 30mpg if driven carefully or cruise at 90mph easy. I've got a bedford cf2 van that I have put a volvo engine and gearbox in too. VOLVO FOR LIFE!
I used to have a 2012 Honda Fit Sport. Bought it new. Put 120k miles on it. Gave it to my friend in 2020. No issues. Did regular maintenance, oil, air, tires, cabin filter.

If you have very little money, listen to Scotty. He'll save you a FORTUNE.
He does for me.
WoW Amazing!!!!
Very very true I am a witness of it
@@HermannTheGreat Yeah I know isn’t it great ?
Wow, Scotty has man groupies online!
@wATapp-zi9cw Sorry, I only have a $30 phone I bought in 2012.....no smart phone.
The P1800 one of the coolest looking cars ever
I have a manual 83 Volvo 240 that is probably close to 300k now (Odometer stopped), and I’ve had to repair a few things, but it’s the original engine (as far as I know), and runs pretty well
It’s hard to find a 740 with less than 300,000 miles on it. I like our 850, but wish it was a 740. I’m happy with the 24 mpg our 5 cylinder gets.
Great report on a great performing car. I'll keep that in my recommended list. Thanks for the heads up! Hoy!
@@mrnobody2589 Thanks for the vital information. I always look to help people in getting something good.
@@chevalsauer well done on getting the Toyota Camry that’s another reliable car👍.
i bought my 2001 ford e150 camper van with the 4.6 for 1800. it only had 117000 miles and was in great shape. you can still find great deals out there.
I drove a 1974 new Volvo Station Wagon and it was so impressive at the time. Would definitely buy another of the time period you predict were among the better Volvos. Didn't know the Chinese had purchased Volvo. That's sad.
My friend usually drove his old Volvo sedan two or more quarts low on oil and never changed the oil. It just kept running.
My 1991 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser is a "Full-Size" station wagon!
I bought a ‘92 240 fir $700 nine years ago …. still have it. Drive it all the time. Odometer stuck at 65K … I estimate it has about 130K.
If you find an old one in good shape, they are a keeper.
I paid $1500 7 years ago for my 1991 940 turbo sedan runs great 🙂
I own an 89 740 with 300,000 plus, odometer stopped working. Manual transmission. Still runs great. I paid........ 0. I'll keep it till it breaks
My old chevy Silverado RWD gets over 20mpg with a v8. It also has right at 300000 miles.
I do love me a boxy wagon 👍🤗
Thank you for the videos Scotty 🙂
I owned one,1994 940 wagon. For 8 years. Can't find them anymore. rwd only horrible in the snow. Bad mpg, 22 on avg. Terrible on the highway 4 sp transmission, 3 k rpm at 60 mph.
You have one of the black dashboard Volvo 700 series. They are black because all the early ones cracked like crazy.
BMW had the best looking station wagons, not sure about reliability but they looked so good 👌
the last of the great Volvo's. they were built like tanks and well equipped for their time. Volvo proved you can build a simple powerful 4-cylinder mid sized engine that's torquey reliable and goes on as much as Scotty 😊
A rare occurrence, to get more than your moneys worth in this day and age. Great video scotty
Skotty check the reliability of 02-03 mitsubishi lancer. They last as long as Toyota and Honda. Need a video on 02-06 Mitsubishi Lancer ES
My friend has a sports model in storage
Great content!!! AS ALWAYS😊
I would love to know what goes through the minds of Scotty's neighbors as they look at the window and see him flinging his arms around as he talks into this phone walking around an old Volvo - must generate some interesting stories...
Spot on buy something for cash, drive the wheels off it ,debt for cars to keep up with the Jones s ,is a fools errand
yep, we need more cars like this.
I have a lot of money and I still listen to Scotty! 😂
You are awesome Scotty!
it pays to stop at the junk/salvage yards too! many 🥲thou of $$$ i threw away😭 and bought something else instead of repairing for Thousands Less
Scotty your freaking awesome, I don't care what people say about you!!
Had a 73 164. Early fuel injection. Not great mileage. Not available as a wagon. They didn't make many 164s. It had that orangey caramel interior like this one. Should have kept it a lot longer.😂
Take me back to the days of SIMPLE!
Scotty, you forgot the emergency brake handle.
Good afternoon Scotty. Have a blessed weekend!
I love those old volvos
I had a chance to get a couple of wagons for cheap ....probably should have
Volvo have under Geely, gone back to the old solid made Volvo.Take a XC60, built in Sweden and made with Boron super strong steel , they have been out for 20 years, and, no deaths in accidents, that shows you a great car. Try a XC60 if you have never driven one, try it,sold tank, for your loved ones.
Safety features? Airbags? Abs?
300k in a Volvo, no even run in yet.
Absolutely brilliant motors.
Got a volvo but year it was made was when Ford owned them. Engines are still made in Sweden though.
I've heard of Volvo's going a million miles before.
I am usually very stingy about car aesthetics. I love my Ford and Chevy aesthetics and Dodge too. Yeah a lot arent manufacture in the US anymore, but I cant help but prefer them over anything foreign
With the exception of Volvo. Every time I see a Volvo with the classic sharp angles (not the more modern curvy Volvos) i cant help but appreciate just how damn beautiful those cars are.
95% of the time the car is parked
4.99999999999999999% of the time it's driven
0.00000000000000001% of the time it's looked at
If it takes me from A to B, I don't care if it looks like a PT Cruiser or a Lamborghini Miura.
Recently at a Volvo dealer in Sydney, I asked the salesman where the new car was made, he told me the new Volvos are made in China now.
Volvo cars 🚗 are great 👍
I had one. lemon. insulation fell off the wiring .
Wow ! Scotty not raving on and on about another about a Toyota ! Most vehicles are good if properly maintained and cared for.
I love Vulvas!
Parts for these are either impossible to get or ridiculously expensive.
Nissan style chime🎵... nice Volvo
0:38 nothing wrong utilizing space of real estate. Station wagons
Stiil looks good. Looks comfortable, too. For that price and his use of mile HE STOLE IT.
Should I get a used toyota matrix or a honda fit?
I used to have a 2012 Honda Fit Sport. Bought it new. Put 120k miles on it. Gave it to my friend in 2020. No issues. Did regular maintenance, oil, air, tires, cabin filter.
We had a station wagon we used to pull our racing boats all over the country, I started to miss it after it was gone. We called it "the meat wagon" 😆
Volvo 240 series one of the best cars ever made .
What year Volvo's are the best?
What year and model is this? I didn’t hear that.
Checking on internet. Not many 93 Volvos for sale. Not dirt cheap.
