Have you used or are planning to use colour-shift paints on your minis?
Brilliant tips, especially showing the impact of the different colour undercoats - thanks!
Thanks, glad you found them helpful!
I’ve bought a few but never knew how to use them properly. Thanks so much for this guide, incredibly helpful!
Glad that it was helpful. That was the goal. I know so many people who did the same and then never knew how to use them. Please tag me if you end up using them!
It's great to see some examples of these paints in use. I have some but I've not dared to really try them just yet
I feel like I saw so many videos showing off the colours but very few who actually showed how to use them on models. So I imagine many people are in your situation
The youtube algorithm has blessed me once again! Great video!
Thanks so much. Glad you liked it.
Great tips! I love color shift paint.
Thanks! I love them and often have to refrain from using them on everything
Good tips and pointers there that i haven't considered before. Thanks.
I hope they help!
I have a Harlequin Void Weaver i am going to try it out on. :)@@wargamingsorceress
Good tips thanks
Thanks
I’ve got a Commander Farsight model, and I’ve been dying to use a Colorshift to make his Dawnblade pop. Definitely gonna use these tips!
Oooh that sounds like it would be cool. Tag me in it if you post to social media
Lots of useful information here. I particularly appreciated the comments about underpainting with one of the colors from the shift paint. Thank you.
You are welcome!
I remember I tried to make my own color shift paint before I knew they were a real thing. I feel like this would be super cool for the trim on thousand sons
That would look really good
OMG I'm so happy I came across your video, so informative, I got some colour shifter and have been cracking my head on how to use it. This has saved me alot of time on experimenting, now I have a better idea on how to use it, thank you so so so much.
Glad it has helped you out. I love these paints and they are not used enough in my opinion. I'd love to see what you come up with
@@wargamingsorceress I'm thinking of using it on my thousand sons army, the section on the different under coats is so informative now I have some idea which would be best. Btw I love how that colour shifter has a violet/purple tinge to it so if I go up against Orks it's gonna be stealthy 🤣
That's cheeky and I love it. 40k Orks are fantastic
Thank you this video has defined my painting style and what I teach young people. I need to work on subtle! I found the most subtle effect with silver. Thank you so much for your experimentation.
You are welcome. I found I was struggling to figure out how to use them so went into research mode and played around with them
I bought these paints for Nemesis board game. Thanks for the ideas.
You're welcome.
I plan to paint my Alpha Legion Marines (the MK VI armor, to be exact. I think new "Beakie" armors from Horus Heresy are perfect models) with very fittingly named Psychotic Illusions from GSW. Thank you for tips, I've heard that gloss primer (already sprayed them with black gloss from Vallejo) is a must for smooth color. I may try giving it a bit of zenithal spray of either silver or dark silver or maybe even gold (to shift it towards yellow-green spectrum) from their metal color line.
Hell, I may do some testing with spraying over decals, in case this particular paint would work for white too.
I think they would work quite well. I'd love to see how they come out. Tag me on Instagram If you post them.
Hi, I'm curious if you could give me the recipe you used for the monster shell at 1:15. This is exactly the color I would like for the shells of my Tyrannids.
I believe that was black gloss undercoat with Vallejo turquoise violet shifter from the eccentric colours set
thank you soooo much!
You are welcome!
The matte to glittery is new to me, got to test it out!
It's a fun technique and effect. Let me know how you get on!
Interesting.. cheers
You are welcome
i'm doing my War of the Ring minis and wanted to do Saruman of many colours instead of plain old white, this was super helpful! Since these are board game pieces I'd like to do a varnish to protect them, would this knacker the color shift effect?
A gloss varnish should be fine but I imagine a matte would dull the effect.
I'm currently painting EVE from Wall-E and researching colour shifts paints.. As soon as you showed the white undercoated beetle, I was instantly like 'I need to know how that was achieved!' so my question is.. lol. How did you achieve the White Pearlescent Beetle.
So you start with a gloss white undercoat. You can use layers of a gloss varnish if you don't have a gloss white. Then use a colourshift paint that has a clear base-tone i.e. it looks white-ish in the bottle. In this case I think I used Vallejo 77.009 (turquoise violet)
Thanks for the tips! I have 6 colourshift paints, but could never get the effect I wanted from them.
I hope these tips help you achieve the effects you want
How would you go about darkening them? I plan to use the vejello blue/purple but i saw its too bright for what i want. Second do i need a protective coat over the shift paint and seal it in?
That is a good question. It is not something I have really tried. If you mix it in with paint, you start to lose the effect.
You could try mixing in a little bit or a dark ink or try a dark blue undercoat rather than black. Black gives the strongest effect so if you go slightly dark but not black it should not be quite as bright.
You can also add a very dark wash over it but know that this tends to dull the effect as well.
As for a protective sealant. I don't tend to varnish my models and have yet to see any damages on these style of paints. However, if you do want to seal it I would go with a gloss varnish over the colour shifter parts
Have you tried Green Stuff World's interference paints? They are very similar to these color shift paints, but only have a single pigment, so you can (theoretically) mix them to get new effects. I bought them a while ago but never had the courage to try them lol
I haven't tried them yet. I have some fine art interference paints from Jo Sonja but haven't used them on minis yet
Question: I’m going to assume a matte varnish once the model is done will will ruin the effect? I assume you can really only use gloss varnish over the top?
The gloss undercoat was definitely a new tip for me.
I don't varnish my models so haven't tested it. However from theory, it would dull the effect and make it look more diffused or glittery. A gloss or satin would be my pick
how would a pink/gold color shift look over a pink model? I was thinking of using it on a WH40K pink Horror...
I think that would look great. It would give it a bit of a shine and a gold highlight/reflect
@@wargamingsorceress wow thanks for the quick reply!
: )
I have been thinking about trying colorshift on my drukhari but I am worried it will not look great maybe I will just try and use it on some of the larger parts of a kabalite such as her knee armor and shoulder pads?
Give it a go on one model to see how it looks. It could work depending on the shade you choose
