  • Criston Cole is probably one of the most hated characters in house of the dragon, and one of the most misunderstood. Is he just a jilted lover or is there more beneath the knights shining armor?

Yeah, I wish there had been two or three more episodes. We could have seen more of Criston, his early days in the King's Guard and some more hints of his background. Even yes, him getting bullied because he's Dornish. I don't know or remember if the show has talked or mentioned how Dorne isn't a part of the Seven Kingdoms yet.
I wish we could have seen Viserys and Alicent's wedding. There's a deleted scene with Alicent and Rhaenyra before the wedding. Show more of Laena. Like her relationship with her brother and especially Rhaenyra. It said in the Fire and Blood novel that they were close and planned to marry off their children. Finally I would like to have seen more of Harwin Strong. I mean I don't mind that we don't see much of him and Rhaenyra, instead of most is implied, but I wish we seen how it began I guess. Maybe we could have had one more episode after Laenor and Rhaenyra's wedding, how they try to have a child, and it doesn't go well. Then it's implied she's seeing someone else. Then we find out after the time jump it's Harwin.

This video was so good. Criston is so interesting, he's easily in my top 3 or 4 with Alicent and Armond.
I think a video on Helaena would be great too.

Ultimately it comes down to how the show is framing the narrative, the major character perspectives, how the audience engages with the text, and the overall format of the adaptation. There’s only so much a production team can squeeze into a 10-episode season which is supposed to cover around 10 - 15 years of character development, and with such a huge cast to boot! Because of how HOTD S1 was formatted, we only get snapshots of who Criston is, and it leaves casual fans with nothing but a terrible first impression.
I can only speak for myself when I say that I believe Criston Cole was done a disservice in Season 1. Instead of leaning into this idea that Criston is a thug, I think the showrunners could’ve added more complexity by further highlighting the fact that he was initially a lower-class man working his way through the system and once reaching a position in the upper echelon, he realized that the whole system itself was nothing but a mummer’s farce and that some of the people in such high positions of power don’t adhere to the values they espouse. This realization would understandably cause anyone who worked that hard to achieve an esteemed position (that they’re now stuck in) to feel embittered and distrustful.
The problem is how the writers and showrunners chose to portray Criston in and after Episode 5. It’s harder for the audience to empathize with a man who openly committed an inexcusable hate crime against another innocent man, instead of partaking in a “supposed” accident against said man at a tourney where it could be made more ambiguous. There were plenty of other ways Criston could’ve been characterized going forward, perhaps emotionally distancing himself from Rhaenyra and choosing to immerse himself in the duties expected of a kingsguard to “repent” for his error in judgment. Hell, show him being more of a father figure to Alicent’s kids since there were no scenes of Viserys putting in the effort. Instead, he is not given any degree of self-reflection or opportunity to discuss the ethics of the court amongst his fellow knights, shown to have close friends he can feel safe around, or even basic hobbies that would humanize him whenever he’s off duty.
Overall, while I won’t disparage anyone for feeling the way they do about whichever character in whichever work of fiction, I believe there’s merit in exploring Criston Cole and its nice to see that despite some misgivings among the fandom, there’re some willing to discuss potential facets of him.

"hate crime against another innocent man"
More like Cole committed a crime against a man who made a veiled threat towards him about the very treason that has pushed him to his breaking point. Ultimately that crime paints Cole in a terrible light in the public eye given how most ppl won't know the full context as Criston did.
Edit: It's not a "hate crime" but simply a *crime*. Also I firmly believe Cole is one of the top3 most misunderstood and unfairly despised characters in the show. His story is a tragedy like many in this story and like the Dance as a whole.

Criston is a underrated character in the show he very reliable character in the show and book but the show is tryna paint a depiction of certain team as bad and one good that’s why I believe that’s why they don’t have daeron in the show cause I think people would see the blacks for what they are and they don’t want the greens to have to much sympathy that’s why I never understood why they made aegon to be terrible then he truly was but that hbo and director and writers for you.

People calling him an incel confuse me. He doesn't hate or mistreat women, he loathes one woman for a pretty significant reason. She used him for sex, he gave up his honour because he loved her, something he valued more than his own life, only to find out he meant nothing to her. Pretty good justification for hating her if you ask me.

Alicent offered crispon a way to take the horrible things he'd done and place the blame for him doing them on Rhanyra. Like without her, he wouldn't have done either thing, she's the villain, and bringing her down will clense your white cloak and make up for everything. I think Alicent got that point across to him and that she'd be on his side cause she feels she knows how he kinda feels. They both feel as if Rhanyra is the root cause of all the trouble in their lives and the thirst for revenge against her is the driving factor. More so for Crispon where Alicent just wants to do what she thinks is right. Crispon just turned an innocent man's face into what looked like a partially sliced up roast beef and that was his goal in the moment. He grabbed the dudes mushy face by the chin and turned it side to side to make sure he'd smashed it good enough and then gets up and flees. I'd say he's got a bigger motivation in viewing Rhanyra as evil and needs to "bring her to justice" for being a teenage girl with power(something he forgets about) to make himself feel better about his own giving in to temptation(both for sex and murder). All that being said, Joffree was dumb af and never shoulda acted like he even knew cole.

Sir Criston is a tragic character, even tho lots of fans is belittling him and calls h a simp and a pathetic man. The truth is that he had worked his hole life for the role as kingsguard and then was raped by the one that gave him the role in the firstplace. Than he was getting more and more paranoid with a lowering state of sanity thinking that he would be executed any moment so he begs Rhaenyra to flee with him so he can leave and not risk being eather mutilated or killed. She refuses and of course that infuriates him. She raped him belittling his honour and when he practically begs for mercy she asks him to be her hore. In the wedding he was paranoid and on the brink of suecide because wich he tries to do after killing Joffrey. Alicent saved him from that fate and therefore he is loyal to her but still holds a grudge against the women who nearly ruined his entire life. That is the tragidy of Criston Cole, a flawed man who did everything he was supposed to and nearly lost everything in the process.

Hmm. Definitely agree with some of your views on him but also can’t vibe with a few of them. To me-- Criston Cole is very-- Catholic/Christian coded, and in many ways a very hypocritical bitter and prideful man. That’s not to say he’s without his virtues, he has many but ultimately at the end of it all his choices and where they lead him are his own.
Also regarding his beating and murder of Joffrey I DO absolutely believe that he was very much at a breaking point regarding EVERYTHING BUT--- I also like to believe at this time Criston was still very much doing his duty to the royal family including Rhaenyra…. Joffrey KNEW about him and Rhaenyra. He doesn’t know this man beyond him being the paramour of Rhaenyra’s fiancé and that he is AWARE of his and Rhaenyra’s relationship. Wether Cole truly thought Joffrey was trying to taunt or threaten him with this knowledge or truly meant his words regarding camaraderie in their positions as lovers and protectors of their individual partners. It didn’t matter. Joffrey knew the truth and was a potential threat to Rhaenyra. And so Cole silenced him permanently. And admittedly in a far more brutal manner than was actually needed but as you said, at this time, Cole was at a breaking point and some of that most definitely came out in how exactly he chose to handle Joffrey.
But that’s just how I viewed his actions.

  • @AssasiCraftYogUscus

While I can understand how his position could lead to such a spiral. It doesn't take away from the fact that he help instigate one of the bloodiest conflicts in Westeros. Criston could've found any other way to deal with his hang-ups but decides to push Aegon to steal the one thing Rhaenyra is meant for. Very clear act of revenge with thoughts for how it might effect the very class of people he came from.
