    If anybody is wondering, Criston is partially based on a real-life man, Gerard De Ridefort; a noble and eventual master of the order of the temple (knights templar) during the crusades era. They have a ton of overlap and Dan Jones, author of The Templars, even refers to Ridefort as a kingmaker when he partakes in a conspiracy to crown Guy De Lusignan as king of Jerusalem instead of Raymond the Count of Tripoli (who had deeply insulted Gerard when he was his overlord)

    • @pshaaaax805
      @pshaaaax805 6 месяцев назад +6

      He’s mainly based on Richard Neville who was the actual real life KingMaker during the wars of the roses just as most of Asoiaf is based on English medieval history

    • @amanimckenzie32
      @amanimckenzie32 6 месяцев назад +6

      George most likely had many historical people he pulled from to create Criston Cole’s character. But the main historical person is definitely Richard Neville, Warwick the Kingmaker. Coles nickname literally comes from him. Neville first supported the York king Edward IV then after helping place him on the throne, later supported Lancaster King Henry VI to win back the throne and placed him on it once again. Similar to Cole first supporting Rhaenyra then turning to Aegon ii.

    • @Captain_Insano_nomercy
      @Captain_Insano_nomercy 6 месяцев назад +2

      @pshaaaax805 I disagree, Gerard is far more similar to Cole, but if George said it was Neville then that is fine.
      However Neville was a noble lord, where Ridefort was the Templar master and a bloodthirsty warrior, just like Cole. The Knights Templar and the Kingsguard are farrrrr more similar than a comparison between Cole and Neville:
      -both are military orders
      -both orders are chaste
      -both orders give up all personal property and titles
      -both orders serve the faith and crown
      -hell, they even dress similar too
      Cole and Ridefort are both bold, lustful warriors who have more combat prowess than wisdom or discipline, and both fall after the result of a foolish charge against a tactically superior foe

    I hate how people keep saying that Cristian joined the greens and went bad because Rheanyra rejected him. Not everything is about Rheanyra that applies to Cristian his character is much more complex.
    1) Since he is Dornish and doesn't come from a high status family Cristian had to deal with prejudice and classism to get where he it. And he was devoted to his role as a member of the king's guard and followed his oath.
    2) As a member of the king's guard Cristian took a vow of chastity and celibacy. And he broke that vow by sleeping with Rheanyra. And when a knight especially a member of the KING'S GUARD is caught sleeping with princess. He is brutally tortured to death.
    3) Cristian wanted to restore his honour by marrying Rheanyra but she rejected his offer. She wanted to continue their affair despite knowing the danger. He was willing to put his life and title on the line for her but she wasn't willing to do the same. Realising Rheanyra didn't really care about him and was just using him he joins the greens. Not just to scorn Rheanyra but also to repay Alicient for giving him a chance to restore his honour.

    The fact that (in the books) Criston is indifferent and oblivious to Rhaenyra's feelings for him it makes more sense that Rhaenyra is the one that was hurt and removed Criston from his position because he rejected her. It was Rhaenyra who was trying to seduce him from the beggining, Criston was just doing his job as a guard. The show did him dirty

Criston being indifferent to rhaenyras advances is only one of the possibilities we’re given according to mushroom. It’s also said in the books that Criston was absolutely in love with rhaenyra and that he happily hooked up with her. The whole point is that we don’t know for sure.

    Love your videos man! But at 9:10, that's not really accurate. In "Fire and Blood", in the scene before they kill Criston Cole, his assailants reject his call for duels, and say something like "I won't have the singers sing of your valiant stand, Kingmaker" before finishing him off. This showed me that the term was already being used as derogatory already. (Please keep up the great work! I especially love watching your videos before bed haha.)

    I think house Cole is a house of high ranking servants like the Cassels, which will occupy the positions of stewarts or if they have martial ability, captain of guards or master at arms. They are low in the nobility but with good abilities may be raised by the lords they directly served, like Ser Rodrik who is made castellan. I argue that this types of families is the closest it can be to a middle class family in the feudal society of Westeroes

      That's funny part she came on to him and held more power over him. But people tend to minimize that power dynamic because he's physically bigger and should be considered "lucky" that she wanted to sleep with him. But if it was the other way around they would be calling him a predator. Sure he's bitter after being rejected to runaway but how many would after getting intimate with someone and then proceeded to get told to be a boy toy not husband or lover?
      When Daemon is the actual predator who basically groomed his niece into always having a thing for him. But he's played by Matt Smith a fan girl darling so the man could do anything even choke her but people will still love him.

      That was a dumb idea and I can't defend it. It seemed out of character for him considering he never seemed like a complete retard. I think the writing there was a little off.
      Where he's misunderstood is in what he was angry about in the first place. He wasn't upset Rhaenyra rejected him, he was upset that he broke his oath and put in a very rocky situation.
      If it was found out that they slept together he would have been gelded, tortured and then executed. He was obviously completely bloody terrified and I don't blame him. The power imbalance was insane.

      The video talks about a middle ground between the show and the book but the truth is that the book came out first and Criston was not a butthurt person in the book, he was honorable and stoic, he became Rhaenyra’s king’s guard when she was 10 and he couldn’t see her as anything other than a child so in the book when she tried to seduce him he was horrified and switched sides. He probably wouldn’t have schemed Aegon’s coronation if it weren’t for the fact that Daemon was in Rhaneyra’s side and would’ve have murdered everyone, the problem there was Daemon.

The running away on a boat part was never mentioned on the book, he became Rhaenyra’s protector when she was 10 and he couldn’t see her as more of a child so when Harold westerling caught Rhaenyra and Daemon doing their incestous shit she confessed he was just teaching her how to please cole to seduce him and when that became common knowledge at court criston was disgusted that the little girl he met was trying to do that and switched sides, he wouldn’t have plotted against Rhaneyra if it weren’t because Daemon was on her side and he would have murdered everyone and Criston because there was personal hate there.
