I love the dance because it shows both sides were capable of committing atrocities and has blurred lines of which side was properly in the right. The butchers ball is a great example is this, Cole tried to save his men by surrendering then when it was refused offered a 3 on 1 combat before being shot to death under a peace banner, an actual war crime. All this coming from the side that is more often considered being in the right of it. It’s a complex and messy story and I’m still so happy they chose it as the first spinoff show. It’s a good one to bounce back from after that catastrophic s7-8
You're not wrong . But it's also fair to point out he bared steel first. Can't really ask for truce after . You can't say the butcher's ball was dishonorable imo
Cole at this point had committed many atrocities, had his own share of war crimes. This wasn't even a war crime, but justice. And the Blacks were in the right of it, since Rhaenryra was the ACTUAL HEIR to the throne. It's not that complex.
He drew his sword at a Parlay... He committed the war crime. They wanted to do battle and he wanted to fight then and there without even giving his men proper warning. The Black's were in the right on this
Wow I can’t wait to see this done on HOTD. The cinematography, actors and atmosphere they have made has been so good I think this is going to be amazing.
Loras: “The heroes will always be remembered. The best.” Jaime: “The best and the worst. And a few who were a bit of both. Like him.” Loras: “Who? Ten black pellets on a scarlet field. I do not know those arms.” Jaime: “They belonged to Criston Cole, who served the first Viserys and the second Aegon. They called him Kingmaker.” - A Feast for Crows, Chapter 16.
Honestly i lowkey like cole in the book, but can't wait to see show cole used as target practice. He's insufferable and i roll my eyes whenever he speaks
Probably one of the dumbest battles of the war on either side. Cole's force is about half the size of the Riverlords and largely made up of Crownlanders; he offers to surrender, which would give the Blacks the opportunity to take a valuable prisoner in Criston Cole and either execute him as a traitor in KL, or try to ransom him. A lot of the Crownlanders in his army had probably already changed sides once, and would have swelled the size of Rhaenyra's forces. Instead they choose to fight an unnecessary battle and incur more casualties for no other reason than their commanders are bloodthirsty. Then we've got Criston Cole deciding to march from Harrenhal and through the Reach in order to get to Ormund's army, when he could have marched west and sought the aid of the Lannisters, or at least entered the Reach from the north.
This battle actually reminds me of Dracula's campaign against the ottomans, the guerrilla tactics, scorched earth, the amount of brutality and so on. I think this massacre was a message to all the queen's enemies: there will be no mercy for traitors. Fear is a effective tool too. Numbers are not everything.

"The best and the worst. And a few who were a bit of both. Like Ser Criston Cole the Kingmaker." Jaime Lannister Ser Criston Cole is a violent brute but is also capable of charming and devoted. A True Knight! Insulting a Knight's liege-lord is a bad idea.
People should really learn to separate their character preferences from their abilities. Cole may be incompetent as a King's guard (on the show) but say he wasn't skilled as a general is just ridiculous. He simply couldn't do more than that.
Cole had no chance against Lionslayer and Roddy . He would've d*ed regardless. The way i see it, they viewed him as a dishonorable man (he was) so they didn't want to grant him the death of a fighter. I may be wrong but i think thats the reasoning behind that decision . He was a good fighter but a terrible person who thrived on hatred and murder. He deserved that
He defeated daemon with dark sister twice fair and square. This dude may be a terrible person, but there is no doubt about his prowess at the battle. he was a warrior and would have clutched the potential 1v3 , though might not survive from the wounds.
Exactly. He did not get an honorable warriors death as he was unworthy of it and they knew it. He had taken enough life, time for him to go. Unceremoniously
If they agree for a duel Cole had no chance. He may have killed Garibald. But the Lionslayer and Roddy was tough. Cole was not familiar with Northern Axe fighting. It will open his stomach.
Roddy the Ruin took out the most experienced knight from old town and Ormund Hightower in a 2 vs 1 while losing his shield arm…. Criston Cole was most certainly not just about to walk through Roddy the Ruin
Did Cole have a chance? Absolutely. He is probably the finest Knight of this era. However, this was not going to be an easy battle for him by any means.@PEDOGAYMONTARGARYEN

Then why did they refuse? Their decline is similar to Robb decline to duel Jaime. "If we do it your way, you'd win. We're not doing it your way." They must've known their chance were slim, so they ordered the archers.
They won’t write songs about how bravely Cole died, but they can write songs how the greatest fighter in Westeros was in honorably murdered by cowards.
Though a lot of people are saying Cole got what he deserved, the Green Lords’ still violate a flag of truce and honorable combat by killing Cole with arrows. Moreover he did try and save his men’s lives.
Aemon one eye at this point was already burning villages and lords castles with Vhagar. Cristin Cole also drew his sword first thus he broke the peace banner.
@@tomflynn54 Ser Criston likely figured out they didn't intend to negotiate, rather to gloat and he chose to die with his boots on, Riverlords already prepared best archers to keep eye on Kingmaker so they were already breaking negotiation norms.
He's not an honorable man . Doesn't exactly deserves to be treated as one . Negotiations were not an option considering what Aemond was doing at that very moment.
I hope they keep this as close as possible to the books. A pretty epic way to go out. And Criston Cole is unfairly hated by the fandom when Rhaenyra should be held just as accountable.
I wish that more people who watch the show would realize that all of this drama is supposed to represent how rotten and broken down the House of Targaryen had become. There’s no “good side” in this story. Both sides commit barbaric and horrible acts.
Yeah rhaenyra should be held accountable for him Fuckin another queen & once again breaking his oath 💀 he's not unnecessarily hated , he's perfectly hated for being a complete hypocrite who keeps on protecting his faults on to others & doesn't held himself accountable for his mistakes.
And so ends the Ser Criston Cole the Kingmaker. The books have a much different interpretation of him, hope we get to see his more competent side in Season 2 I've been told that Criston Cole was "the best and the worst of the Kingsguard", said by Jamie in the books. His feats are rather impressive Overall, it begs the question, if Cole did fight all three of the Lords, I wonder if he would've won 🤔 low-key, there must've been a small part inside of the Lords of the Trident that didn't want to take the chance of Cole winning.
No, but that wasn't gonna happen anyway. They let him die a cowards death, no glory or honor. He died much like many others in the battle of the blackwater lol
For context Cole knew his time was up and if they battled he would lose and die . If he could kill the three leaders somehow that might lead to their armies being discombobulated. He had two choices one go back setup a defense or try to go offensive … his ego said go offensive.
Cole is one of the most misunderstood characters in the show atleast... A man of honour, who lost it due to class differences in Westros and looking for redemption... Want to see how the show handles his death...
I have a feeling because the hotd book being from the historian Pov of maester who could be influenced by house hightower since the citadel is in their realm it probably paints green loyalist better than what they were and black in a worse light. at least that's my theory. Well, while he certainly held a possible advantage, ultimately the way he died came down to one thing: his enemies simply did not respect him enough to care to treat him honorably or give him a chance at a last stand. So why bother and risk their lives anyways?
Ser Criston Cole "He was a great Lord Commander is what he was, he tried to save the realm from Maegor with Tits and in this house Ser Criston Cole is a hero! End of the story!"
I never understood how the greens managed to hold onto kings landing for so long considering that the blacks had more support from the houses. The only two major houses to support the greens were the hightowers and lannisters.
A) you're underestimating how powerful the Hightowers and Lannisters were when put together B) a LOT of their forces were concentrated around the westerlands and crownlands, while Rhaenyra's were more dispersed C) they did hold the support of lots of minor houses, both who supported them on their own volition as well as those who followed the big ones D) they had Vhagar, which made many of the ones close to their points of command wary of antagonizing them, which even if they did not go for the Greens, helped keep them neutral
The Greens had the Lannisters and *all* their houses, the Hightowers and their vassals (said to be as powerful as a great house) + the Baratheons and *all* their houses. It's implied that every Northern vassal house not named was neutral (hence why so many of them specifically are named) and the Riverlands was split. The Iron Islands is poor with low manpower. The greens likely had more houses in actuality although it's not clear but they definitely had the houses with the largest populous in terms of smallfolk, most money and largest armies.
They did it that way cause they knew Criston would have bodied them, anyways the fanbase will cheer for this moment but when Rhaenyra dies I wonder what will the reaction be
They did it cuz there is no point in fighting a traitor when they already outnumbered. He didn’t derserve to die fighting after what he’s done. Also exactly what he says no songs should be sung about this POS
Cole in the show deserves what’s coming to him, Cole in the book however dude was a bad ass took on strong and Deamon, wasn’t a little girl about his emotions and just an ice cold killer. Only way he was gonna get killed was by an army. I expect the show to make him such a wuss that he begs for his life as he’s being stabbed.
I know right and yet people claim there badass like how is that badass they claim he killed thousands of people so they kill him under a peace banner and then proceed to butcher his surrendered men kinda hypocritical
Very interesting. All I know is what I’ve seen on the shows. I’m sad to hear of his death and am interested to see more videos to find out what happened.
Ser Criston Cole "The Kingmaker", a knight without honor who divided the realm and was responsible for the deaths of thousands. A knight who gave no quarter in life and received none in death. No songs are sung, no writings of his valor, no mentions of his honor other than all the dishonorable actions he did. Let his memory be a warning to all knights
Wouldn’t Cole be dying “bravely” anyway since his sword was in his hand when he died or was it because he died by getting shot instead of in a melee? Like if he got shot in the back while running away or hit before he knew someone was there I would see how that fits.

I take it this is the part where GRR stated he would make people side with the Greens 😅
He drew his sword at a Parlay... He committed the war crime. They wanted to do battle and he wanted to fight then and there without even giving his men proper warning. The Black's were in the right on this
The problem is Cole drew his sword at a parlay which makes what happened after entirely his own fault
That was so gangster how they did him

@@pinkdouche "Numbers are not everything" They are in fact EVERYTHING when you're in a Medieval setting with low population growth and greater susceptibility to disease than present day. Criston died because of Aemond basically.
Yup
"The best and the worst. And a few who were a bit of both. Like Ser Criston Cole the Kingmaker." Jaime Lannister
Ser Criston Cole is a violent brute but is also capable of charming and devoted.
He deserved that
Yep, he went out awake killed after denying surrender only to giveit in defeat and trade his life for theirs. He earned shame
Everyone is dishonorable in the war
And each of them gets distasteful death especially rhaenyra
You really underestimate Cole’s combat ability
@@wayne47able No. He had no chance at all. Roddy the Ruin was there. He'd haver gone down very easily to him. And if he was the finest knight of that era, then that era was very poor.

Then why did they refuse?
Their decline is similar to Robb decline to duel Jaime. "If we do it your way, you'd win. We're not doing it your way."
They must've known their chance were slim, so they ordered the archers.
They won’t write songs about how bravely Cole died, but they can write songs how the greatest fighter in Westeros was in honorably murdered by cowards.
Based on what was said, I imagine it would be more like they denied him the honorable death that a better man would have been worthy of..

Nah. Sir Incelot can get cluster sodomized for my pleasure.

I've been told that Criston Cole was "the best and the worst of the Kingsguard", said by Jamie in the books. His feats are rather impressive
Overall, it begs the question, if Cole did fight all three of the Lords, I wonder if he would've won 🤔 low-key, there must've been a small part inside of the Lords of the Trident that didn't want to take the chance of Cole winning.
He stood no chance at all, not with Roderick Dustin standing nearby.
No, but that wasn't gonna happen anyway. They let him die a cowards death, no glory or honor. He died much like many others in the battle of the blackwater lol
Jaime also sees no problem in his father brutalizing people for often no reason, Jaime talking good about someone is meaningless
Good video
For context Cole knew his time was up and if they battled he would lose and die . If he could kill the three leaders somehow that might lead to their armies being discombobulated. He had two choices one go back setup a defense or try to go offensive … his ego said go offensive.

Cole and his soldiers were a lost cause. Why would they give him an opportunity to get away when they already have him in hands?? It was Cole who said that there was no fair fight in war, this is fitting for him.
Allowing him to escape would be a stupid mistake that only D&D think was good, Cole lipped off and got what was coming to him, he deserved this being his death
Cole was beaten and claiming he still gets to decide terms is idiotic, especially when Aemond is already burning the riverlands, why would they negotiate with Cole when the damage has already been done it’s better to just end Cole & massacre his men then allow him to get away with
Well, while he certainly held a possible advantage, ultimately the way he died came down to one thing: his enemies simply did not respect him enough to care to treat him honorably or give him a chance at a last stand. So why bother and risk their lives anyways?

they have vhagar
Lannisters are a very powerful house with lots of soldiers and gold
A) you're underestimating how powerful the Hightowers and Lannisters were when put together
B) a LOT of their forces were concentrated around the westerlands and crownlands, while Rhaenyra's were more dispersed
C) they did hold the support of lots of minor houses, both who supported them on their own volition as well as those who followed the big ones
D) they had Vhagar, which made many of the ones close to their points of command wary of antagonizing them, which even if they did not go for the Greens, helped keep them neutral
