Watching this, I actually realized how Brianne and Cersei are foils of one another. Both are women are wish they could fulfill men's roles and feel held back by their gender, Brianne wants to be a knight more than anything and is willing to die to live up to her noble, selfless values while Cersei wants to be just like her father and wants to follow in his footsteps as the heir that he never had. The difference between them, however, is two-fold, Brianne is seen as ugly while Cersei is seen as beautiful, but Brianne is kind, selfless, and humble while Cersei is vain, power-hungry, and cruel. Really makes me wonder just how their two stories might wind up intertwined considering how they're both important women in Jaime's life.

Brilliant analysis. Something even more tragic about Brienne is her possible future. We know that Brienne is known as Brienne the Beauty, both as a mockery of her lack of beauty and as a nod to her very beautiful blue eyes - the only part of her that is beautiful. But we also meet another unattractive character in the story named Pretty Merris. And I feel like Pretty Merris - with her chopped off breasts, earless face, slit nose and scars crossing both her cheeks and bruised body - could be an eerie nod to what could happen to Brienne if she doesn't go home like Randyll Tarly suggested to her. War is brutal to warriors and for a female warrior in those times, even moreso🕵🏾‍♂️

Its a test of character no doubt.
A man burdened by hopeless romanticism, in everything he does.
Will he choose the easy, vain, beautifully hideous love? Or the difficult, humble, hideously beautiful love?
Its a test as old as time itself. GRRM has just found a grand Shakespearian way of unfolding it. Much like everything else for that matter.

That being said, they still refer to their gender in a different way. While Cersei is just insanely salty about not being a man (Even Jaime aknowledges that what Cersei loved about him was that he was a reflection of herself, as a male) Brienne seems to be less desperated about it.
Obviously she knows that thing would be easier if she was a male, but she also dreams of herself as a regular good looking noble lady.
Basically, if we were to rank female character about how ok they are being a woman, girls like Arianne, Catelyn or Even Asha would be 10 and Cersei would be 1, while Brienne would "only" be a 3 or 2

I think Lady Stoneheart is inevitably going to find out, yes. Maybe it'll bring a stirring of the old Cat back. I just hope the Blackfish never ends up encountering her, I think that'd break my heart.
What really blew my mind about Catelyn was the realization that she could have turned Robb into the next Tywin and prevented everything that occurred after the North rose, if only she had called Robb out in front of his Lords, as she had intended. Instead she did not want his bannermen to "mock him in their cups", so she stayed silent. Look what an embarrassing father helped Tywin accomplish...

In the books, Lollys Stokeworth is the most tragic character to me. She’s spent her life being made fun of for being “simple” and during the riot in King’s Landing, she’s raped by 50 men then becomes pregnant and has severe PTSD. She’s a minor character but definitely one of the saddest. Another tragic character to me is Tysha, Tyrion’s first wife. I feel so awful for this young girl who actually loved Tyrion and then is seemingly betrayed by him and is raped by Tywin’s men as well as by Tyrion. Her story is so tragic to the point that I almost wish she had been using Tyrion the way that Tywin thought (even though I doubt it since of course Tywin would never be able to believe someone could love his youngest son just the way he is with no ulterior motives) because I can’t even begin to fathom how awful it was for her if she truly loved Tyrion and not his money.

Jeyne Poole, Theon and Arya in my opinion. Especially Arya. Just look how dark her heart has become and she is just 12... And she killed 8 people... Seriously when I read her chapter I just want to cry. "There is a hole where my heart should be."
And Jeyne's and Theon's abuse omg. Their mental health is ruined forever. Ramsay Bolton is the worst guy we got to meet through someone's PoV in the Seven Kingdoms. I cannot even imagine what they have seen besides what is mentioned...

      5. The actors who literally developed mental health issues and or alcohol problems, because the characters they had loved and built up so much meant to them, and then series 8 completely annihilates all of them.
I'm not exaggerating btw, if you're curious. Both the actors for Jon Snow and Daenerys developed issues coping with the ending for their characters. Kit Harington admitted himself to rehab so as to get his drinking under control, and Emilia Clarke also developed issues with depression and alcoholism following the ending for her character.

Well if so that is a good theory and is supported by the fact how much of a Lannister Rat Pycelle is but there’s a counterargument to this and it that Pycelle could’ve change Aerys’s mind about Tywin when the two were hating each other and Pycelle did nothing there and let the 7 kingdoms go to ruins and let the friendship weaken and that led to Aerys declining Tywin’s offer to marry Cersei to Rhaegar and if you say Pycelle doesn’t have influence but we have seen he really does have influence as a Grand Maester.

Arya is just shy of 11 when she enters Bravos. John is 16 when he's betrayed by the Night's Watch. Tyrion and Tysha were 14!!!!!! 14 years old and they both had to live through and move on from that.....

Merret Fray: Every westerosi lord looks down on frays, and every fray looks down on Merret.Easily the unluckiest man alive who got hit by a mace in the head when he was young, causing him non-ending suffering.Dies pathetic.
Gregor Clegane: 8'5 giant who suffers constant excruciating headaches, gets poisoned but tanks it for months because of his size until they turn him into a frankenstein type of thing. He might be a monster but his giantism caused his violent behaviour and its the quality that got tywins attention.
Theon Greyjoy: Did awful things, betrayed robb BUT his punishment in the books is so bad that you can only feel sorry for him.Ramsey stripped his skin and sent it everywhere on westeros, cut his manhood, cut his fingers, broke his teeth and took away his name and identity, he became another person.
While Jorah and Brienne are tragic(every character kinda is,even Mace Tyrell) i dont think that they should make the list of the most tragic.Glad you put Viserys thought, the show wouldnt give him a pov,at age 8 he had to go through insane hardship to survive and his need for redemption made him into that shithead.

I think Ned and Catlyn were st least happy for a good few years together. Lysa Aeryn had an unrequited obsessive live for Little finger then had several children die young so she desperately protected the one who survived until her death. That's tragic in a lot of ways. But I think one of the most extreme is the book character of Lollys who is mentally impaired, raped by a mob then married iff to Bron - no one seems to care about her at all except Tyrion. I agree about giving The Unsullied top spot on this list

    • @Nystariii
      @Nystariii 2 года назад +1

Thank you for this. I see a lot of people railing on Lysa for not helping Cat, but that's because we're looking at Lysa through King Robb's eyes when she doesn't send reinforcements. Or through Cat's eyes, when she's holding court with her son and deciding whether Tyrion should live or die. But let's look at her from the outside - a young girl in love with a man below her station, a boy who grew up with them. But when the time came for her sister to marry her betrothed the boy Lysa loved nearly died challenging him to a duel. Then there's all that talk of tansy-tea on Hoster' Tully's deathbed, implying that Lysa got knocked-up by Littlefinger and Lord Tully made her get rid of it before marrying her off to an old man in some far away land.
Then bring on the miscarriages, the stresses of living in King's Landing on someone who is clearly fragile mentally and emotionally, Petyr returning to her in secret and convincing her to poison her husband in order to save her son being sent off as a ward - to Casterly Rock, Winterfell or Dragonstone. Fleeing "for her life" with her child, surrounded by men whispering sweet nothings in order to sit in her husband's seat and (effectively) unseat her son. Then her sister shows up with a Lannister captive and leaves with their uncle, perhaps the one man she might trust in such a situation.
I hate her as a character, but damn if she didn't have it rough.

In the HBO series no one caused themselves more harm than Catelyn Stark.
She caused her entire family nothing but pain, betrayal and death
Here is a list of some of her more notable mistakes 1)taking Tyrion Lannister hostage
    2) telling Ned he could trust little finger
    3)setting Jamie Lannister free
    4) she knew exactly how lord Frey was but still let Rob walk into a trap
    5) not advising Rob who was around 15 not to accept kingship of the North till after winning the war and placing the entire Lannisters lineage on spikes.
In others taking a page out of Tywin's playbook
I'm talking some Rains Of Castamere type shit
    Let loose on all Lannisters
The North allying with the Baratheons means the troops home by Christmas
THE MAIN REASONS FOR NED'S DEATH
    1) Catelyn taking Tyrion Lannister prisoner
    2) trusting littlefinger
    3) Robert Baratheon death
    4) Ned's loyalty to his family, mainly to Catelyn
In the first 3 years she was actually the main villain to what most would consider the good guys
Plus just destroying the family created up North wasn't enough for such a high achiever as Catelyn
She was also in her spare time able to take out her ancestral house
And nearly wipe all the Tullys from existence
It would seem impossible for a mortal person to accomplish so much in one life time
The night king was actually waiting for Catelyn death before invading the south
People don't live as long as the night king with out the ability to spot real danger
What he saw made the ice in his veins to grow even colder
That if he and his host was to encounter Catelyn they would not survive 5 minutes
against a real villain such as Catelyn
Even in her last seconds amongst the living she slit some poor kid's throat

As kingdoms go, they go. But winters last the longest tho. They are terrible, they are slow,
But as far as kingdoms go, they are wont to stay, but always go, but winter holds fast to its
ancient keeps, it does not weary, it does not sleep. And when such kings as rise to think to
plot its slumber, as kingdoms go, they go to slumber.

Most tragic ones are those fans who were still faithful of the series (prior season 8) and hoped that the show would end in a satisfying way.

Ned Stark: Dad and big Brother executed, Sister died in child birth, had to raise Jon Snow as his bastard straining the relationship with Catelyn and beheaded unjustly not long after old friend and ally King Robert's death.
Tyrion Lannister: Born a dwarf, killed mother when born and hated by his sister Cersei & his father Tywin for both reasons. Ended up losing entire family including beloved Brother Jaime, killed his father after lifetime of mistreatment and being sentenced to death, put faith in Daenerys only for her to become mad like her father and burn King's Landing to the ground and lost many people he cared about along his journey. Generally unloved, mocked and derided with the exception of a few people.
Sandor Clegane: Burnt by brother for playing with his toy, permanently scarred and scared of fire, treated with disrespect by his superiors, lives a loveless, bitter and twisted existence, picks up many injuries on his travels, loses the few people who try to help him and dies falling into flames getting revenge on his brother who he hates and blames for his miserable life.

Imagine us season 8 of the show went like this
Jaime and Brienne are defending bran. Brienne gets disarmed and impaled with her own sword. We then cut to a younger Jaime kneeling, and we hear “in the name of the warrior I charge you to be brave” Jaime kills the white walker that stabbed Brienne, and after grieving, pulls the blade from her chest, but as he pulls it out, it flames. Back to the scene of Jaime being knighted. “Do you swear to defend the innocent and the helpless, in the name of the seven?” ‘I do.’
The night king makes his entrance, staring down Jaime. Jaime looks at him and chuckles bitterly. “Do you know what they call me?” And as they walk toward one another we hear a collective sound of “king slayer” that we’ve heard throughout the show. Jaime strikes and the Night king is surprised, but quickly raises his blade of ice. Their fight is a blur of orange and blue, both moving faster than the eye can see. Jaime moves fast, faster than should be possible for a human, and the Night king realizes this won’t be an easy fight. Jaime falters for a hair of a second and the night king takes the opportunity to attack, wounding Jaime. Jaime falls to one knee, struggling to catch his breath. As the night king prepares to finish him bran glances at Jaime, and time seems to slow. He lunges at the Night king and the flame on his sword grows hotter, so hot that the blade begins to melt. Jaime plunges Oathkeeper into the night King’s chest and there is no sound. No scream of agony. The night king looks at Jaime with shock, before beginning shatter. Jaime pulls whats left of the blade from the creature and watches as the night king crumbles. Eventually all that is left are splinters of ice, with a shard of dragon glass sitting amongst the remains.

I love the epicness of that but having only Jaime do it wouldn't be interesting. I agree with Brienne's death and the rest. After Jaime is wounded Jon,Theon, Grey worm and co. come to his aid. They fight him altogether and Theon manages to wound the NK but gets stabbed. Bran comes to him in the phorm of a crow and says he forgives him. Theon closes his eyes and dies. Jon manages to break NK's sword but he keeps on fighting with his fist's alone . He seems like he is going to win but suddenly Arya stabs him the way she did in the show. But he doesn't vanish yet. Greyworm stabs him, then Jaime and then whoever else is there. NK is on his knees with the swords and spears of the main fighters stabbed to him. Jon then gets up and grabs his sword. And he walks towards their position. The NK raises his hands reviving the dead for one last time and then Jon strikes him down and NK vanishes.

I mean in The Lord of the Rings Universe there is Extreme negative Cosmic Bad Karma that comes from oath-breaking. Jamie is one of those rare characters but then again he does have a great character he can't be celebrated for his actions nor can he be condemned by them at least not all of them. He's got his hand full of good acts and then he's got his metric fuckton of Bad Acts but if it were me if I'm making a gray character the good acts can never outnumber the bad nor the Bad acts outnumber the good they have to be in a constant equal. He swore to never take up arms against stark and Tully and yet showed up at riverrun with an army ready to take the castle by force. So even then he broke his Oath by technicality. The intent to take up arms should count as you taking up arms against them the same way attempted murder is a thing.

Yeah but at that point, after being mocked for most of your life for being an oath breaker, you know it doesn’t matter if you start keeping oaths anyway, people will always judge Jamie or think the worst of him no matter what he does. What’s the point of keeping oaths anymore.

I do think that Jon Snow had the most tragic story. 2 women he loved dead. He wanted to just be a Stark but ended up being a Targaryen and banished to the wall and the wildlings.
