How dare Wyman manderly's name not even be mentioned. He's the best player in the north hands down because unlike Ramsey who puts personal emotion over his practicality, Wyman suffered one sons death and another's imprisonment yet was still able to fool the south into thinking he was a lannister loyalist to the extent that his imprisoned son was returned to him when in reality he doesn't support stannis either. He's like Olenna or Littlefinger in that he allows himself to be underestimated for his weight, just as Olenna with her age and Littlefinger with his low birth. He's better than all of the grey areas you mentioned and some of the players like Ramsey or even Doran who plotted from a safe position in dorne as opposed to Wyman who'd been in a dire situation with his son and royal family dead and his other imprisoned yet he was able to come out of that war with all his power and resources resources influence intact. So yeah I think a reconsideration is in order.

I don't think Ramsay is all that smart. He has a "certain low cunning", and he certainly has incredible instincts towards torture and pain. But with any level of actual intellect, he would realize that his actions are slowly fostering the style of rebellion against which his rule, and certainly his personal safety, cannot be guaranteed. Ramsay is not prepared to be a major player in the game of thrones. I've always looked at him as a mirror of Robb - they both share a certain cunning towards their chosen sport, and are both undermined by a lack of a grasp of Westerosi politics; Robb by marrying Jeyne Westerling without understanding the impacts on his reputation with the Freys and broader world, and Ramsay by continuing his revelries within cruelty that continue to offput the Manderleys and their allies.

On your point about Robb and as far as I know, he did know the consequenses but he did it anyway because of his inherited sense of honour. He had sex with Jeyne Westerling which got her pregnant and althought there is certainly some romantical relationship he could bare to leave her with a bastard and the loss of honour that would bring so he chose to do the "honourable" thing. There are also rumours that Jeyne used a love potion, perhaps on behest of her familys relationship to Tywin but idk, kinda tinfoly anyway. Point is, I believe Robb knew what he was doing but his honour meant more to him than the consequenses, just like his father

King Stannis isn't a pawn. He's used Melisandre as much as she has 'used' him. He recognizes that because his army is the smallest, Rhollor worship makes him bot feared and admired, striking that fear into the heart of the enemy. Without Melisandre's shadow magic, the traitor Renly would've killed him with a superior force at storm's end. And he wasn't completely sure that the shadow would kill Renly; although he has a large suspicioun that it was him, he is conflicted about it, as he tells Davos. He decided to not take Melisandre to the battle of blackwater, because he didn't want his lords attributing the victory to her, andhe was only defeated because Baelish brokered the alliance between Lannister and Tyrell; aside from that, after using the leeches of Joffrey Waters, Balon Greyjoy, and Robb Stark, (the latter which he was conflicted on doing) Melisandre urged to sacrifice Edric the moment Balon died. But he refused. Then Robb Stark died, to which he still refused, and only when Joffrey died did the King resolve to use Edric to 'awaken stone dragons'. Then, when Davos smuggles Edric away, and Davos gives him the letter from the night's watch, he decides to go because it is his duty as King to defend the realm, thus leaving the entire southern theatre and basically ending his bid for the Iron Throne by decidng to protect the realm from the walkers instead. Only after he decided did Melisandre agree and tell him that he must defeat the walkers in the north- thus HE made the choice to abandon the 'waking stone dragons' plot. It's also noteworthy to say that King Stannis burned Allester Florent not for 'good winds' as the Queen's men seem to imply, but because he had committed treason by trying to marry Shireen to Tommen in exchange for peace with the Lannisters. He then decides to burn Mance Raider as he is a traitor, which goes beyond anything Melisandre wanted, and she actually deceives the King to keep Mance alive. My point is that multiple times King Stannis shows he has agency, as has used the red God as a means to an end. Stannis means to take the north to fortify the position of the North against the walkers, with him leading the armies as King.

Doran wasn't at all good with his secret plots. He's so secretive that the people he wants to work with don't trust him and so slow that what he does doesn't work out because half the people involved die to unrelated things in the decades it takes him to get around to anything. After these decades it isn't even clear what he is trying to accomplish. Vengeance for Elia on people who are all dead? The whole Dorne subplot is a tragedy of an incoherent desire for vengeance leading to more harm. These guys only play themselves.

Though then you could argue she wants him off warring so she can manipulate those left behind. Regardless, unlike the show, Stannis isn't much of a believer in the Lord of Light. But I agree that none of the "Kings" are really meant to be players, but more so in that middle field you talk about. Leyton Hightower and the Mad Maid, those are definitely players. The cult of the Many Faced god as well, and the Iron Bank, probably both in league with the Citadel. Aeron and Victarion believe they are players, but are totally under Euron's grip.

Ramsay is not a player because he is too impulsive and sporadic. He acts entirely on instinct which makes him easier to predict given that he will always choose the malicious and sadistic way. I think we're going to see in the Winds of Winter how an intelligent character like Roose Bolton uses a mad dog like Ramsay to his own advantage and how this will ultimately spell doom for Ramsay

Eddard still wouldn't have been a player, but if Catelyn wasn't a complete idiot in informing Littlefinger and capturing Tyrion, he would have had the weight of queen or knight instead of a mere pawn. Too bad she was the greatest assest the Lannisters could ever hope for without her even knowing. It would have been a very, very different game to look at.

@@JoshuaHenelyThornhill I will admit, though, that you'd have more of a point if we were talking about Ramsay from the show. But that is more due to D & D's ineptitude, lol. Book Ramsay has already been sentenced to death for the crimes he has committed - crimes that will no doubt shortly come back to haunt him and do nothing but unravel his father's and thereby by extension his own hold over the North. His behaviour and reputation isn't winning him any favours to the point of where his closest confidants are all his father's men despite Ramsay's belief to the contrary.

Cersi, had the greatest statement in the game of thrones!!! Next comes Vareys then comes Little Finger!! But Little Finger is the greatest player in the game so far!!!
But Vareys has the greatest connections that spanned continents!!!
In the books Tywin who was a master player is dead!!!
Sadly Ned was a Pawn who never was never a player at all.
Little Finger has set much of the downfall in Kings Landing on3 motion not knowing so many people had diabolical plans of their own in motion as well. On this end the Spider had weaved a major web to catch them all in.
The 🕷's web is long and wide!!!
But of course Blood Raven is Truly the King of it all because he knows so much more than anyone besides the Children of the forest!!!

"The climax of the story." I think you are being naive. GRRM is sitting on tens of $ millions; he is regularly asked to speak at important events and has received all kinds of honors. I purchased the last novel in the series over a decade ago. If GRRM did not find the motivation to finish the next book in the series last year, under semi-mandatory home confinement because of a worldwide pandemic........well. Game of Thrones, ASOIAF, is the greatest book series, the greatest story, great except never to be finished. But we can all dream of "A Dream of Spring". Good video.
