    Robert is Quint. I can't possibly even contemplate anyone else in that role. All his mannerisms, his yelling and screaming, the mumbling to himself as the shark approaches, his commanding presence, the rum, the lines, Hooper drives the boat Chief. On and on. Robert was magic in that role.

      There are, technically, 4 “Jaws” movies. All of them have at least some great acting by great performers in them; but the latter three utterly pale in comparison to the first, and that’s in large part due to that alchemical mix of Shaw, Dreyfus, and Schieder. Particularly Shaw… I agree, I cannot see another actor pulling that role off. It might be my favorite movie character of all time. One of my favorite scenes is when they’re heading out, and Quint is just yelling (“nor’easter coming…rig for depth charge… yo ho ho…” etc), seemingly having the time of his life. Robert Shaw IS Quint.

    • @roquefortfiles

      @@chrisradzion2148 To me there is only one film. Jaws!! It is absolutely epic in every way. A fabulous story with great characters. I don't care about the other films. Roy did the best he could with the material out of a contractual obligation. You'd think the FX dept would be perfecting the shark as they went but it got goofier looking. That I will never understand. Jaws 4 ? this looks like a great white shark? Really? It makes me appreciate Bruce all the more. Jaws isn't really even about the shark. It is about 3 guys and how they figure each other out in order to fight the shark. Yes the Out to Sea sequence is fabulous. I love iconic shots. The shot of the Orca framed in the Jaws with Williams music. Chills every time. I've never gotten a chill from any of the sequels. Except maybe the scene in Jaws 2 where the dorsal fin comes up behind the boats at night. I thought that was well done.

    • @chrisradzion2148
      @chrisradzion2148 2 года назад +1

      @@roquefortfiles my sentiments are the same: the first is the only real one. The others are all derivative, and that’s just going by the story/script. The first film that came out is something special. I’ve always thought that the driving force of the movie was the story of the three men going out to kill the shark, not necessarily “the shark” (who takes prominence in all of those sequels). And in a turn of events, I think the problems they had with Bruce, being forced not to show the shark (or, when they had to, using real shark footage, like the cage scene) made the film way more thrilling. But it really is the acting of those three men, Shaw the most imho (no disrespect to Dreyfus or Schieder, both great actors), that makes that movie a masterpiece. It’s one of a handful of movies where, if it’s on TV and I mange to catch it halfway through, I’ll inevitably end up sitting down and watching till the end, and will likely try to rewatch entirely in the next couple of days.

    Wow, he resembles his late father physically, yet unlike his father he's at peace with himself and the world. Robert Shaw was a brilliant actor but a troubled soul, that came across clearly in interviews. It's heartening to see his son doesn't carry that angst.
    Shaw bullied Richard Dreyfuss on the 'Jaws' set, there's no two ways about it. Dreyfuss and the late Roy Scheider have spoken about his macho challenges to the younger actor to jump from the boat's mast, do 20 press ups etc. It was petty, macho stuff. Dreyfuss admired Shaw, so it was tough for him to compute - but Shaw did this to men frequently. There are even examples of it when he guested on TV chat shows - he couldn't help himself!

    The interplay between those 3 male leads really elevated JAWS to a masterpiece level…it’s essentially a MONSTER story but it’s so much better than that with the 3 characters on the boat. When QUINT is introduced into the movie it really takes off! It seems to me that Dreyfuss’s character , an annoying young academic, was a perfect foil for ROBERT SHAWS QUINT, survivor of the USS Indianapolis. The conflict helped.

    • @clemdane
      @clemdane 2 года назад +10

      Shaw was already a veteran stage and screen actor at this point, and while Dreyfuss was quite young and inexperienced, he apparently came in with a cocky, overconfident attitude that rubbed Shaw the wrong way. Roy Scheider said that Shaw thought Dreyfuss needed to be slapped down a few pegs, so he kept making fun of him and humiliating him with physical challenges and dares. He'd say, "I'll give. you $100 bucks if you climb the mast of the ship and jump off" and teased him for his small stature and weight. Shaw would try to psych Dreyfuss out just before filming started by quickly saying, "Watch out for your mannerisms!" and other critiques. And of course Shaw's alcoholism didn't help the situation. When Dreyfuss dropped Shaw's drink in the sea, Shaw turned a firehose on Dreyfuss' face!

    Wow. THAT apple didn't fall far from the tree... Ian looks almost exactly like his dad in his early movies.
    As for Dreyfuss v. Shaw, I've watched a few interviews about this. Dreyfuss has mellowed on the issue quite a bit, and while he's forgiven some things he hasn't forgotten anything. I've known men in my life who were cut from a very similar mold as Shaw. They can be... unpleasant... when they think you're not giving 100% at what you're doing. You get frustrated as Hell at them and scream, 'What do you want from me!", and they just answer, 'More." For a young man, that's never an easy right of passage. For a young, kind of 'soft' Jewish actor in his first big movie, it must have been a horrible experience and I can see why Dreyfuss held a grudge.
    But Dreyfuss wouldn't be half the actor he is without Shaw pushing him past the breaking point. There's a grain of truth in the old adage that you learn the most from the teachers you hate.

    People are complicated, and sometimes it’s hard to see at the time what their true feelings and motivations are. Complicate that more by adding alcoholism, and just all the trappings of making a film under less than perfect conditions. I really do believe, as I think Dreyfus now does, that Shaw was teasing him, nagging at him, etc… to make both of their performances better, and also make Dreyfus overall a better actor, and maybe a better person. Sometimes it takes years, and lots of thought and life experience to see that. I think so much of what’s come out in years after has really borne that out.
    I’m biased, though. Robert Shaw’s performance as Quint is my favorite in any movie I’ve ever seen.

    Good Video. Ian look so much like his Dad, Robert, that I think that it would have thrown him (Richard Dreyfuss) for a loop. I think that Robert Shaw was A Character, however, I do think that he did know The Potential of Richard Dreyfuss & tried to get The Best Performance out of him. I also think that, if you had asked Roy Scheider, he'd have had expressed difficulty working with Robert Shaw. I'm thinking that the people who'd get along best with Robert Shaw, would've likely been his, I believe, drinking buddies of Peter O'Toole & Richard Harris

    Nah, Robert Shaw was a bully. He was nice to Dreyfuss alone, but would humiliate him in front of other people. Don't sugar coat it. Shaw was a full blown alcoholic, and a mean one at that.

    Interesting interview - I’d read about the on-set conflict and seen R. Shaw interviewed. Thanks for the additional insights Ian.

    I thought I was looking at Robert himself!! I was waitin for him to say, "y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for ya but it aint gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like goin' down to the pond and catching blue-gills or tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. A little shakin', a little tenderizing... down you go.

    Robert Shaw was method acting and creating tension. Dreyfuss also had a difficulty on the set of American Graffiti thanks to Mr. Harrison Ford

    The reason the "chemisty" between Quint and Hooper work so well in the film is largely in part because of the tension and distain between them. It was brilliant scenes between them that makes the film so memorable and special.

    Dreyfuss won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1978. Three years after Jaws and he was still under 30 years old.

    If they did a Jaws remake, that’s your Quint. The thing is, Ian is much too intelligent and realistic to ever attempt it, so I’m quite sure it would be a big NO. Guy is the spitting image of his Father.

    Interesting that the interviewer went more with that Dreyfuss took a drink from Shaw as being the problem, rather than Shaw who was apparently drinking too much on the set. Which Ian brought it back to.

    How great that this play is launched and doing well congratulations 😂
    I grew up spending time at Robert Shaws home in Coleshill as my father Percy Herbert and he were great friends
    And i do recall Bob regularly challenging me to a game of tennis as i played quite well as a child- looking back it was funny because he would say
    Come on Katrina lets play tennis im going to beat you ! I think i gave him a run for his money but i was 10 years old at that time lol !
    We kept our donkeys in their field during those days - what memories we had 😊
