Shaw should’ve gotten the Academy Award for his performance in Jaws.
Right! He didn't even get nominated!
Criminal that he didn’t.
Absolutely. One of the greatest performances of all time.
@@ShEDDiNgmYSkiN I assume there were geo politics at play. I don't know if it was because he was sympathetic to the IRA, or if he wasn't. He owned a home in Ireland, but may just being a foreigner or didn't mix right.
I feel like most people don’t get academy awards when they’re gruesomely devoured at the end of their performance. It has something to do with politics, favored people and a specific formula in a film involving a specific actor.
The academy awards is a joke. Some the best movies I’ve seen are never nominated
Robert stole the show in Jaws. Should of been nominated for an Oscar. One of the best ever on screen performances.
👍 🎯
Totally agree. The Indianapolis story scene has to be one of the best scenes in cinema history, 100% should have got a nomination or better still an award.
Damn straight
Should HAVE been nominated.......
@@big6142 Absolutely!
His monologue about the Indianapolis was simply one of the greatest in film history. And not only was he drunk when he did it, but he wrote it, too. Incredible.
John Milius wrote it.
@@jamescurran6277
It's true that Milius dictated the general lay of the scene over the telephone, but Shaw dramatically edited it down to the final scene you see today. Either way, magnificent work on behalf of both.
@@jamescurran6277it was Howard Sackler's concept, which Milius overwrote as a 10 page monologue and Shaw edited it down by about half.
If you read Robert Shaw's novel The Flag published in the early 60s there is a very similar monologue @@Kinesiology411
I believe he was drunk when he first attempted it but couldn't pull it off to anyone's satisfaction. He came back sober the next day and nailed it.
Mr. Shaw's portrayal of Quint gave the movie the character it needed.
All parts worked! The haunting music, the sheriff who ckd not swim and egghd Dregus the opposite of raw Quint. And the Indianapolis scene below decks brought the theater to the silence of a grave site!
@@billkramer2994I Agree with all you have said. What I meant was that without Quint they would have been fighting the shark from the shore the whole time and closing the beaches. Even though the shark killed Quint, he knew to end the problem you have to go kill the shark.
@@octocreepy Don't thnk so. The city ist put out a bounty and we saw all the amateur numbnuts go out on the water. It was a wily pro like Quint that knew what had to be done. Like hiring the right gunfighter after amateurs all failed in the old west. One great western "the professionals" says exactly that. Want a mind twister find "Memento" Guy Pearce one of today's grt sleeper actors fr Eng.

He did it while well-oiled on Jameson's.
@@williamshaw9047 I guess, but that's IRRELEVANT to the comment!! It was a truly great performance.

The storytelling of the U.S.S Indianapolis by Shaw was one of the greatest scenes in movie history.
Agreed ! I knew some things about the war in the Pacific but almost nothing about the Indianapolis since it happened so late in the war until I saw that.

old school, these older actors were the real deal. One of the best.
Yeah Robert is among those old school british great actors like Anthony Hopkins, Peter O'Toole, Richard Harris and Michael Caine.

World class actor! The voice he gave Quint is perfect.
For years I thought he was a grizzled character actor. Only to find out he was an esteemed British actor.
That’s incredible acting.
Yeah, fine actor. Loved him in From Russia with Love.
He's Irish.
He’s English but he moved to Ireland and died there in 1978
@Prof_Tickles92 I recall growing up and loving this movie and of course his portrayal of Quint as one reviewer said and i paraphrase Spielberg cast Shaw perfectly as the "Saltiest man on earth !!" And yes it is always interesting to hear him in his own refined British voice
yes yes quite so !😊
That's exactly how I saw him too. Unbelievable
What a rare, unseen treat this is.Thank you for unearthing and posting this
It's so sad that he never even saw the incredible success of this movie. Lots of people don't really know of the brilliance of this man. He was a wonderful novelist as well as an accomplished actor. Gone way too soon.
Well he actually did. Jaws already became the highest grossing movie ever already in 1975. He didn't pass away until August 1978. Jaws 2 was already out by then. He also was in another film based on a Peter Benchley novel in 1977 called The Deep. So he was fully around at the height of Jaws mania, and even beyond.
Just saying ✌️.
@@lyndoncmp5751 Shaw also did Force 10 from Navarone, with Harrison Ford and a wealth of others. Great flick. May have even been his last film.

Too true. Wish he was around much longer and made more films.
I saw his son Ian playing him in the excellent play The Shark Is Broken. I wonder what he would have thought.

The Indionapolis story might be my favourite movie scene of all time.
If it's not my favorite movie scene, it's close to it. I served in the Navy for 12 years, so the scene holds a little bit more depth to me as a US Navy sailor
Wow...seeing now who he actually is in real life....that performance becomes even more unbelievable. What a transformation...amazing.
I heard Spielberg wanted Lee Marvin for the role of Quint but he was committed to another project Truly love and admire Marvin's work but glad Shaw got the role Outstanding performance
Lee Marvin was actually available. But he was away on a fishing trip and didn't want to cut it short. He basically said "I want to go fishing for real."
@@superjackster0165And I believe Sterling Hayden was also considered, but he owed so much in back taxes that he would have been working for nothing!

Deserved an Oscar for this anecdote-laden interview
Robert Played that role to the T👌how did he not get a Academy award is beyond me
The year was 1975. Stiff competition and being a monster movie didn't help. Of course Jack Nicolson had to win that year for One Flew, but a nomination would have been nice.
The fact that he didn't even get nominated for best supporting actor is ridiculous. Epic performance.
You don’t get Oscar nominations for this kind of film.
@Greggorious123 I believe it's a shame. It wasn't until the Dark Knight that comic book movies were awarded with Oscar nominations. I don't know what Schindler's List has as a movie that Jaws doesn't have. They are both movies. They are both phenomenal. They both employ actors working hard at their craft. So why are they judged as if one cannot be awarded when the other can?
One of the best performances or characters ever…He definitely deserved all the accolades.

I took my girlfriend now my wife out to a Saturday night movie. We went to see the great Waldo Pepper with Robert Redford. But if you showed up at the 7 o’clock hour, you would be the test audience for a new movie. We went.
we had no idea what this movie was about, no pictures, no one has seen it before. The movie started with the nighttime beach, bonfire, where the girl and the guy went off and the girl went into the water swimming.
The man in front of us with his wife had to be in his 80s. He was probably there to see the great Waldo Pepper, which was a movie about old airplanes with radial engines, and 2 wings… early days of air flight
that poor man could have had a heart attack the way he was reacting to the test movie. He was standing up halfway out of his seat at times. The whole audience was not moving from their seats to go to the refreshment stand or even to the bathroom. The movie was Jaws. That was in 1975 when my wife and I were dating.
