Agree. Maybe ten years ago I was searching for symphonic/prog rock/metal music on youtube. I found Dream Theater and was listening a lot to them. Then I found other bands, a lot of Dutch band, like Epica, Delain and Within Temptation. Then I found Symphony X, and that was a revelation. I found this song “The Odyssey ". I thought first that it was very long, but there were something about it that I liked a lot. No I've been listening to this masterpiece a lot of times, and I will never get bored of it. This is great music!
Honestly , this song and this band is nothing but a fucking masterpiece. One of the best symphonic metal bands I've ever heard before, this is just beautiful and such an epic song.
I've seen them twice. First was when they were touring this album in 2002 and I didn't really know their music yet. They were touring with Blind Guardian and it was one hell of a show. Both bands were great (as was the opener, a band called Twelfth Gate that I guess never really made it). Second time was about 10 years later when they were touring in support of Iconoclast (which is a fine album but not on the level of The Odyssey). This song was the encore. Both of the people I was with were tired and whining that they wanted to go home, but I managed to tune them out and enjoy the perfection that is The Odyssey.
Have you ever noticed how the part from 16:43 to 20:07 tells an actual story about the fight against Scylla? At 16:59, for example, it shoots out of the water - then a fanfare - and dives down again at 17:06. Same fanfare again, now under water. The battle ensues, and from 17:30 to 17:41, its heads attack in an unpredictable fashion. It disappears, the men look around; they only see small waves dancing around (18:09), until the shadow reappears (18:15); it shoots out of the water again (18:34) and pulls many men down into the sea (18:45). The survivor(s) look around skeptically (19:00), but can't find it. The dead are mourned (19:08), but at 19:38 it seems certain that Scylla won't come back - the sea gate to Ithaca is passed.

Symphony X is an American Progressive Metal/Power Metal/Neoclassical Metal and Symphonic Metal Band from Middleton, New Jersey. The band was formed in 1994. The Members of Symphony X for the album: ‘The Odyssey’ in 2002 were: Michael Romeo -Guitars, Orchestral Keyboard, Programming, Engineering, Mixing & Production, Russell Allen - Lead Vocalist, Michael Pinnella - Keyboard & Piano, Michael Lepond - Bass Guitar, Jason Rullo - Drums, Steve Evetts - Mixing & Production, and Peter van’t Riet - Mastering. “The Odyssey” is Track #8 on the album of the same name. This Masterpiece has Seven different parts that are a 24 minute musical interpretation of Homer’s Odyssey. "The Odyssey" is a beautiful song! How cool the lyrics are and the music are is a masterpiece. Russell Allen's vocals bring an aura to this piece that is sooo awesome making this true Symphonic Metal and Michael Romeo turning this into a Metal Masterpiece. Romeo is one of the greatest guitarists in the entire world with a few other choice men. This is a truly epic song with great Metal chord arrangements and strong cool vocals!🤘🏻❤️🎸❤️😎
Agradecer ao meu irmão que me apresentou o Symphony X! E agradecer a esse gênios da música por existirem! Obrigado Jason Rullo, obrigado Michael Romeo, obrigado Russell Allen, obrigado Michael Lepond e obrigado Michael Pinnella
I bought this album when it came out and to this day The Odyssey remains one of the best songs that I have ever heard by any band in any genre. What a band, the word "epic" must have been invented for this masterpiece.
Haven't commented in a long time but this song made me feel alive again. Thank you Symphony X for the best songs, the best singing/lyrics ps Michael Romeo riffs so gud/Virtuosity with Groove
This masterpiece always transports me to the egean sea, it sounds actually like travelling in the sea, i can hear it complete thousand times and never get bored, its passes quickly
I feel like this needs to be paired with Blind Guardian's "And Then There Was Silence". And looking it up, they toured together in 2002, and both songs were released in 2002 as well. I really wish I'd been into this music back in 2002.
They drank the kool-aid of mainstream appeal rather than sticking to their roots. Now they're just not the same and have lost the luster of albums like this.
Don't be too hard on them. This album is such musical perfection that it's unfair to expect them to make a second one this good. Most bands couldn't do it once.
this is one of the most influential pieces of music in my life! and i heard it all: bach, miles davis, charlie parker, steve reich, dire straits, maiden, stravinsky... ...but f***** - odysee is a masterpiece!
One of the best songs ever IMO... About the best fusion of classical and metal styles I have ever heard... If only they had a live orchestra instead of the synths, especially at the beginning. People who like this may like "The Greatest Show on Earth" by Nightwish... I'd say the NW song may be a little easier to get into at first than this but they are both excellent pieces of music.
Discovered this song today, I decided to listen to it in the way to the store, and I’ve been sitting in the Walmart parking lot for 15 minutes waiting for it to finish because I just simply could not do this masterpiece dirty and turn it off

I've been 20 years away from all that i ever knew
To return would make my dream come tru
@@sonicexperiments You clearly haven't listened to the end.
This is the greatest masterpiece by my favourite band. These guys are the masters of metal and music in general. Sublime musicianship and fantastic story telling through music.
I realize that the this entire song is just beautiful, but 3:53 - 6:10 is just so incredible to the point where it is the first thing that comes to my head when I see this song. His voice is so flawless that I get the strangest chills.
💯 Remindful of Bad Company
This song... This song is just... ADVENTURE!
These midi orchestral sounds are so cute.
Sounds like an RPG !
Lo mejor que he escuchado.... así de claro... queremos veros en DVD por favor!!!!!!!
Symphony X is THE best music to listen to when you're gaming. Especially since Homer was pretty much the one who set the stage for most modern RPGs.
Haha Homer. Imagine if Homer designed a videogame. Would be wild
This is one of ny favorite song of all time, i've heard this increible song a lot of times. Is a Journey of multiple feelings, incredible. If you love progressive music in general, this sing is for you.
19:36 Mario picks up a coin
:D
huh?
MemoryLaneCinema It sounds llike the sound effect when mario picks up a coin in a mario game
haha the same song
MultiPotato55 oh my gaaaaawwwwd you're right? It's the same sound!
Fucking EPIC. the "champion theme" at 20:08 still gives me chills.
Alone in my car I belt that part out and it makes me feel happy and victorious 🐇🦄
Every time!
I still get goosebumps from this song, the last part is probably the best in my opinion. Love all parts though x)
champion of Ithica
Agradecer ao meu irmão que me apresentou o Symphony X! E agradecer a esse gênios da música por existirem! Obrigado Jason Rullo, obrigado Michael Romeo, obrigado Russell Allen, obrigado Michael Lepond e obrigado Michael Pinnella
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I bought this album when it came out and to this day The Odyssey remains one of the best songs that I have ever heard by any band in any genre. What a band, the word "epic" must have been invented for this masterpiece.
YESSSSS! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 EPIC!!!!
Haven't commented in a long time but this song made me feel alive again. Thank you Symphony X for the best songs, the best singing/lyrics ps Michael Romeo riffs so gud/Virtuosity with Groove
184 failed to string the bow.
First and only time I've liked a comment of this nature. The clever reference makes it good.
300 ended up on the wrong side of Odysseus's and Telemacus's swords
Read the book just a couple of months ago and almost missed it. Well Done.
339 .... Hearing problems are serious, don't play with it
Best comment ever
Now it's maybe two years since the last time I was listening to this masterpiece. It's still one of the best song from a band I have ever heard 👍👏👏👏😊
The switch up of the groove / riff at 15:00 is amazing
And the transition into the heavy riff at 11:22 is freaking brutal.
Vim pelo professor Thiago Braga !
Odysseus would be proud!
Homer would be proud after all he's the one that wrote this great epic
Jerick Allado Right!
Jerick Allado Given the musical taste of his day I don't think he would understand this music and probably be displeased with it.
Just sayin.
^if he was alive during this era i think he will :)
Jerick Allado if he were to be alive today, then the Odyssey wouldnt exist and neither would this song :I
As a massive rock fan and a massive metalhead who just started playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, this song speaks to me on so many levels ❤️
Fiquei sabendo desta banda agora pelo historiador thiago braga e nando moura, vamos ver qual que é desta bagaça.
The most epic/fantasy/elder thing for all the fucking ever eternity!
This is GOLD!
Never gets tired, each listen is a new Odyssey!
Hail!
vindo a convite do Thiago Braga
Love it. The Odyssey is one of the most important and greatest stories ever told!
We are playing this for our marching show I’m so excited
Record it plz :D
Hannah ogalspy lucky bastard
First ever time I listened to something while working and stopped to find out who the f*** this brilliance was made by. Amazing stuff.
IF ONLY THERE WAS A MUSIC VIDEO FOR THIS SONG
or The Divine Wings of Tragedy...
Crunkers I’d be cool if they made a stop motion battle with little figurines.
Omg I want a music video for this animated entirely in the art style of Fall Guys
this will be a master piece forever and ever
This is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! Amazing, cannot wait to hear these guys live in Worcester on October 1st!!!!
This masterpiece always transports me to the egean sea, it sounds actually like travelling in the sea, i can hear it complete thousand times and never get bored, its passes quickly
💯
15:02 omfg....i love this riff...the whole song is epic...very epic band
I just love closing my eyes and imagine the epic adventure in my head. This song is my all time favorite.
I feel like this needs to be paired with Blind Guardian's "And Then There Was Silence". And looking it up, they toured together in 2002, and both songs were released in 2002 as well.
I really wish I'd been into this music back in 2002.
Love that galop in the end. That heroic 80s metal feeling.
Odysseus would be distracted and forget to return home while listening to this song
This Is the most beautiful Song in the history of Mankind
I wish Symphony X still wrote songs like this.
They drank the kool-aid of mainstream appeal rather than sticking to their roots. Now they're just not the same and have lost the luster of albums like this.
Don't be too hard on them. This album is such musical perfection that it's unfair to expect them to make a second one this good. Most bands couldn't do it once.
@@SithCats agreed
They got old, it happens to the best of them
Though I enjoy their modern stuff, I would love for them to come out with another Prog masterpiece like this album.
I believe this is simply the most beautiful metal song I've ever heard in my life. And I listen to a lot of metal.
Goddamn, few songs have ever reached this level of precision and technique. Such an underrated band!!!
What a song, what an album, what a band !!!
this is one of the most influential pieces of music in my life! and i heard it all: bach, miles davis, charlie parker, steve reich, dire straits, maiden, stravinsky...
...but f***** - odysee is a masterpiece!
Neil Raouf
This song is mint. No doubt about it
Agreed.. !!
+Neil Raouf I feel very identified with your comment. This is worth the admiration of all kinds of musicians
Well said, I sign under each word here!
Lol
Ive listend to this song at least 5x in the last 10 days..... Thanks for the upload. Much appreciated.
Amazing!!!!!!.....romeo is just brilliant....serious good stuff
I like the fact that when I type "the odyssey" on the search bar the first link that pops up is this amazing track ^^
Discovered this song today, I decided to listen to it in the way to the store, and I’ve been sitting in the Walmart parking lot for 15 minutes waiting for it to finish because I just simply could not do this masterpiece dirty and turn it off
One of, if not the best epic ever written, and hopefully some day it will get the full orchestra treatment Six degrees of Inner Turbulence got on Score, it deserves it.
No words can ever describe the awesome feeling every time i listen to this song! \m/
Can't believe I saw these guys with Megadeth and Dream Theater in Pittsburgh 15 years ago ugh still feels like yesterday
Hell yeah, they will play here in Brazil next week with doro, helloweem, candlemas, deep purple, kiss and scorpions
Best prog-song ever
And Illumination Theory rocks too
easily.
Samuel Yang And what about Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence?
I think its awesome for someone who knows to appreciate long songs and dont get bored Bruno Gava Tramontina
As well I loved The Count of Tuscany, the both parts of In The Presence of Enemies and the whole album of Metropolis Pt 2, those were my DTs favorite songs for a long time *****
de los mejores temas que he oído en mi vida! el cambio de los 7:43 es mi favorito!
This is the greatest song in the history of music.
