  • It's no secret that I absolutely love Astoria (Oregon), and I try to show you why I love it so much with a few clips from my many trips to Astoria.
I know for a fact that there's nothing more annoying than presenting you with a slide show or videos with music selected by the editors taste - so I've decided to make this video different from the rest...
...just RAW... just Astoria - exactly like it is, the sounds and the videos are unaltered, not glorified in any way - just Astoria's breathtaking natural beauty.

I fell in love with Astoria since my childhood. I guess "Goonies" movie caused such an impact on most people of my generation (I'm 35).
    What a beautiful place.

Same here! That movie really did make a big impact. It definitely did on my life. I'm your age. I just wish people wouldn't have went "overboard" with it when it came to the "Goonies House." I recently read about what the owner went through with the fans before they closed the driveway. Such a shame.

I love this area too. My Dad had shore duty here in the mid-fifties.
We lived in Navy Housing at first, and Dad was in charge of the maintenance shop that maintained the 'mothball fleet.' Soon, my folks found a big old rambling house to rent near Svensen, nine miles up-river, where we lived for the next two years.
The best two years of my childhood.

My great grandparents and later my grandma owned the house at 296 53rd Street. I believe my great grandfather built at least part of the house. They were Finnish immigrants that came to work at the canneries after a stint in bleak North Dakota. There was still black paint remnants left on the windows from WWII when I was growing up. My grandma didn't do much with the garden but there's many photos of my great grandparents standing proudly in the yard with my great grandma's dahlias and great grandpa's wooden spinners and yard art. It was split into a duplex by the time I was around, but was originally a 3 bed 2 bath house. My grandma and I would take the river walk when I came to visit her. She passed when I was 10. My other grandparents were near Cullaby Lake in Warrenton. I spent most summer breaks there growing up. My mom used to work at the Ship Inn. My great aunt Helmi worked at Home Baking Company on Marine Drive. My grandma would tell stories about working at the canneries at back in the day, and being able to stand out on the sand bar and there were so many salmon you could scoop them up in your arms (this may be hyperbole). Some part of my mom's side of the family owned Skipanon Canning-- they had my great grandma's salmon chowder recipe on their can. The Northern Oregon coast has a touch of magic.

    • @TommyHelgevold

Magic indeed, thanks for the insight and your story, very interesting read. Yes, Astoria have a very rich Finn community too, I've met at least two of them when I last visited Astoria, one of them had been an barber for 38 years in Astoria, lovely lady - showed me around town. Another one was at the Benjamin Inn, I got the great fortune of tasting a bit of Finnish pastry Cardamon Cinnamon Rolls baked to perfection.

Other videos mostly just concentrate on the docks, museum, etc-but this video showed what I absolutely LOVED about Astoria-all of those beautiful historic homes built on and in to the hillsides with the mature landscaping, and vistas. what a great video that seems to showcases this town well! I am just starting the process of relocating...lived in San Francisco for many years, (Astoria is nicknamed Little San Francisco?) and this reminds me of some of the small towns in Marin County....I moved north of Seattle to a nice suburb but it doesn't have any personality and I would like to be closer to the water, BUT, I really hate the rain and see that Astoria rains more than where I live now, so am afraid I will lose my mind! Any thoughts on this or know of a similar type coastal town with better weather (probably doesn't exist?) I am older, work from home and looking to buy home (affordable) in a town that is very walkable for me and my dog. Are people friendly? Assuming the town has the normal doctors, dentists, animal vets, etc. Any major stores and if not, what is the closest city? Thank you to anyone who comments about the pros and cons.

Astoria is really big on tourism. It's a gorgeous city, they have Highway 30 running - so a lot of business is based on tourism, especially diners & restaurants. The city is also big on antiques and collectibles - and there's quite a few artists that have found their home and living there. A lot of them commute to Portland (which is roughly 1.5 hour drive, 2.5 hour if you use the bus that commutes 2 times a day between Portland and Astoria). That's pretty hard to do since the commute is so long, so it's really great if you have a business you can set up online (Internet connectivity in the city is pretty good). Shop locally - if you want the city to grow and thrive.

I am from St. Petersburg, Russia! We have a big country and a big city, there are areas of the city that we never visit, it is even more difficult to visit Russian cities because of long distances. Astoria liked the city as a child, after watching the movie Goonies, such a cozy, quiet safe city! It is very surprising that there are no fences and alarms in the house, I often watch American investigations of crimes, it is shown that rapists and drug addicts can enter the house very easily, the doors are also very thin (! It's a pity that your city is very sorry and difficult to drive, but I would be very I wanted to go there :)

    • @garethjones8047
      @garethjones8047 3 года назад

@@GH-oi2jf it is because of the film obviously, and we are all well aware that nobody is allowed up the driveway to the house anymore, and I'm sure most would respect that. The owners of the house must have known about its fame with the film etc, so if they wanted a quiet life, probably not the best house to buy. Also the amount of revenue that is generated by fans of the film visiting for that reason must surely be good for the local economy.

I would contact Columbia Memorial Hospital, and Coastal Family Health Center and Providence Health & Services if I were you, they might provide you with an idea of the current needs of the region.

Thanks, Tommy, I read the regulations.
An everyday scenery like this is very seldom in the States.

There are cities in Europe where playing children are to be seen (in summer).
They have smartphones and laptops (at home).

Det er super fedt at være der, det kan også være en lille smule svært at få det med på film, men det er alltid et forsøg værdt.

Beautiful video. Though this video shows quite places. Actually I lived in astoria and it's not like this video at all.

Thanks, and I partially agree with you, because I spent 42 Days in Astoria exclusively as a vacation from Sweden, and I wanted to feel how it is to really LIVE there, you seldom get an impression of a place by just visiting it for a day or two. Astorias commercial street and the surrounding areas are really busy during the Sundays Markets, and buzzing between 12 - 18.00, after that, the streets are pretty much silent as in the footage. I do have busy streets footage of the Farmers market etc, Might edit and upload that one day.

Nice video to watch, but was dissappointed to see no footage of the goonies house, kindergarten cop school, or the free willy house

    • @GH-oi2jf

Bryan Francis - When will people get over that stuff? The house is just an ordinary house. If you want to see it, watch the film.

I excluded that on purpose because I want people to see the TRUE beauty of Astoria, and I've talked to the owner of the Goonies house, they are very kind and welcoming - but has been disturbed a lot by tourists that don't really care for their privacy. I have a TON of footage from inside the house and around, but decided to not upload this to respect and honor the hospitality and peace of the residents living there.

PrettyBoy Grizzly - Why don’t people just forget about this? Films are shot in many cities. This is the only one people seem to obsess about. Get over it.
