Now that South Korea is taking console gaming more seriously. How will the gaming landscape look within the next 5 years, now that a new game development philosophy has entered the console industry?
I'm hoping that the South Korean 3rd person military stealth action shooter Project TH which is still a WIP will deliver on its incredible premise cus it'll be like the Splinter Cell & Rainbow Six even one my other favorite old time classics-Syphon Filter games we old time fans have been badly wanting back for over a decade. I hope this reignites the trend of fun military action games that we had a life time of fun skulking in the shadows as a highly trained n lethal field ops.

As someone who's lived in South Korea for the last 20 years, I'm very happy to see this. South Korean studios have always had a place on PC, but console is definitely new ground for them. There some pretty good games coming for PlayStation as part of CHP like project perceiver, lost soul aside, wu chang: fallen feathers, where the winds meet and project bbq (the first berserker: khazan)
Only recently learned about the lack of the console gaming market and restrictions of gaming in general in South Korea. Now that the rules have changed and with the popularity of Stellar Blade. I hope there's more to come, especaily with the crap we've had to put up with from the west. Been a fan of Korean movies for most of my life. Also now Korean TV series thanks to the recent Korean content that's been available in recent years on Netflix. The west are getting out classed in movies, TV and now in the games industry. Sellar Blade is how it should be done, a game that people want, with no agenda's or political crap, complete on disc with no need to connect to the internet. It works as is from the disc!!.
They're also growing in the anime space. We've had a number of anime based on Korean manwha and mobile games since 2020 starting with Tower of God (which is getting a season 2 next season), God of Highschool (read the manwha. it's basically KoF x DBZ), and Noblesse. Only Korean game I've played so far is DNF Duel, which I didn't like at all. Looking at how horny Korea's been in their mobile games (just look at Last Origin), I really hope we see that brought to their actual video games somehow. We desperately need a resurgence of unapologetically horny anime games that aren't just mobile slop.
South Korea can do whaetevr they damn want but first they need to port their old MMOs in "offline" versions, use those old combat systems and update them; also port Ragnarok 1 and 2 on consoles and hopefully we can get another Ragnarok Ace Odyssey. Also the Mabinogi series, the upcoming Vindictus game's good but the OG Vindictus is still unmatched. Also Kritika. Also, go back to collabing with Japan like the Ragnarok stuff and the Magna Carta games; heck the Ninety Nine Nights stuf as well, that needs to be resurrected. Tl;dr : there's too much shit that needs to be ported, updated and archived.
The first step is to remove the toned down tifa from ff7 remake and rebirth. Replace her with her true proportions. If not we’ll square enix is gonna slowly fall
Bro ive been saying this for years. Korea need to hurry up and take over all of entertainment, Movies, Shows and Games. They Just get what people want. Can't wait for Little Devil Inside and Crimson Desert
For those worried about microtransactions, the worst of the worst is in South Korean games, sadly. Besides Chinese games too, but South Korea is even worse. The good thing is they don't give a flying F about politically correct stuff and they have the best looking games.
Competition is a good thing. it makes the other want to surpass the other. This might push Japan to start making more actual Japanese games and not be pushed towards trying to appease certain special demographics. South Korea has always been a touch unique in games though. Kingdom Under Fire Crusade on the original Xbox was pretty good. And pretty sure it was SK that made the first MMO games
As a Korean gamer, I welcome Korean developers focusing on creative console games, but I don't think it's a good idea for the government to intervene. This is because it is bureaucratic and can undermine autonomy.
I'll be honest, as long as they do these 'futuristic' looking games without much reference to traditional Korean culture, I probably would not be able to tell if it came from Japan or Korea. It doesn't really matter, a good game is a good game regardless of where it's from.
First Round 8, now Shift Up. These two studios would be the last companies you ever think would make a console game, yet they created Lies of P and Stellar Blade. And the best part is, they knocked it out of the park on their FIRST TRY. And since you mentioned China, the next game I am anticipating is Black Myth Wukong. What a breath of fresh air.
I like Chinese and Korean made games, I enjoy the old IGS arcade games like Knights of Valour. But my only concern is the live service stuff and microtransactions.
My only issue is that this is probably the worst time to do this. With the recent censorship of Stellar Blade's and Tsukihime with the PS5, not to mention Microsoft pushing for "body positivity". Nintendo is also not against censoring their games as well with the recent censorship of the remake for Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door. Yes Nintendo is the least censorship happy company, but the American branch is already doing DEI and ESG. Localizers are also an issue since they can't keep their politics out of translating games. So, I honestly have no hope that we gamers will get what we want without there being censorship. And just to point this out, it'd be less of an issue if Sony didn't have a double standard with the games. Games like BG3, Cyberpunk 2077, the Last of Us Part 2 and the upcoming Hades 2 is a clear sign that they are very much having double standards with games. If both East and West games were equally censored, it'd be annoying, but consistent. Overall, in my opinion, I think South Korea has chosen the worst time to jump into the console market.
consoles are no longer region locked, this means you can circumvent localizers by getting the Korean version of the game from places like PlayAsia instead of the western version
Korean games have the best base for modding then. While with western games you basically have to fix the entire game including the story, korean games would just be a few tweaks here and there. Look at stellar blade, it would be very easy to "fix" that game. And you could also just not download any patches
@@Matt-jc2ml the downside to not downloading the patch though is that you won't have NG+ and will therefore be unable to 💯 the game, and I'm not talking about the trophies
With the success of Stellar Blade, I think we're going to see some great Krn console games in the next 10 yrs. In the last 15 yrs they have made a big name for themselves in PC gaming, films, TV, and music. They have really talented people in their tech and entertainment industries and they definitely know how to market their products.
They really do be releasing bangers like lies of P and Stellarblade( havent played it yet but i heard its awesome) I think it's great though, higher level of competition might mean better games in the future. That said, still got a long way to go before they reach fromsoftware's tier but im excited for whats to come
nah EA and the Sims will NOT crumble. Not even a dent. Have you even SEEN Inzoi and how shitty its running in even the latest dev video?? that game is barely hitting 15-20 fps at all time. You think ppl are gona get rtx4090s to play a korean Sim?? lol
I dunno about Korea on PC but South Korea is absolute powerhouse when it comes to mobile games. Might seem insignificant but on often low cost and sustainable income - those are money printers.
do they also plan to make them fun or interesting? or only shiny, cause Korea has been making games for several decades and people still fail to name me ONE singular iconic korean made videogame character... Some bland NPC from Tera, or BDO? Lann from Vindictus? XDXDXD Korean games are glossy turds with the depth of a mobile app, and the identity of an NFT.
This might be for the better. If they don't have to deal with foreigner publishers nonsense, the chance of them actually delivering the games they wanted increases. Korean animation studios been working japanese ones to make anime for while now, so this probably helped building the relationship for game studios. Blue Archive, which is a korean gacha game and one of the most popular right now, was even released with just a japanese dub (probably to feel more "anime"), it even released in Japan first. I hear there's a korean dub is coming, but now the game is already 3 years old. Having more options is good thing, especially now that everything is so centralized companies feel way too comfortable with being anti-consumer and attacking other platforms that step out of line. I grew up playing a few korean games, like Grand Chase and Elsword, so I'm more than willing to see what they come up with.
From economic theory perspective, the government can't invest, investment is private. What they will do is use tax payers money to help some people, game studios in this case, and this doesn't work just takes money from Koreans. In the end Korean studios would decide if there is a business benefit in releasing console games, if not, then they would release them only for government money, but those will be low quality games. About Korean gaming industry. They made Lineage, Mu online, Lineage 2, Tera, Archeage, Black Desert, Lost Ark, Throne and Liberty, Ragnarok Online and I would say the biggest number of MMORPGs. What they have in common is that overall they have the best graphics in the industry. Throne and Liberty for example is the most optimized videogame I have seen with the best graphics for the genre. They also made PUBG and some shooters. Korean artists are the best 3D artists too. The most beautiful characters like those in Black Desert are made by Korean artists. They don't make realism like western studios, but they make epic looking characters, specially in fantasy games. Chrono Oddysey is looking amazing. One bad thing about them is pay to win, besides it exists in all the world, Korean games are the worst in this case and I personally don't care about who has more or less in a mmorpg, but sadly they use predatory tactics that harm the game.
I don't want to be reliant on the whims of foreign countries to provide decent video games. I want the activists purged from _our_ industry. Especially because there's no guarantee Korea won't get corrupted by outside investors just like America, and now Japan have. Korea's gaming industry just hasn't become profitable enough yet.
At this point i don't care, as long as they can keep DEI/ESG blackmail out of their games. Otherwise it will be same crap created by a different Studio.
its not as good of an idea as you might think, if they go on console, they will fall under the thumb of ESG in some capacity (Stellar Blade), regardless of where they're from. PC is the only safe haven. Well for now Nintendo too, since their policy is hands off with 3rd parties it's why they have more naughty games on it than PS. But, from the looks of it that might come to an end in the near future as well.
yeeaaa... take over with what...souls game? dont get me wrong, life and stellar are good games...but... those are souls copy games. not everybody play souls games.
I love South Korean games just don't be Shift Up and blue ball everyone with promised fanservice one minute then censoring on launch. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
if koreans have thier own consoles that would be a huge plus cause no one will try to censor them ... as for korean games in japanese console id say yeah but stellar blade wont be the last one cause sony wont stop censoring
I feel games such as black myth Wu-kong, are going to be in the forefront of this new revolution. Many years to come I got this feeling people will be pointing at games like that and say this is what a game should be like this is what inspired me such and such
Agree, everyone needs to stay away at woke western video games with ugly females, political/correctness, broken unfinished games with microtransaction paywall and LGBTQ+ Community. Asians are dominated the gaming industry of their talent and skills are a fresh start revolution of gaming in the future.
I'd love to see a 3rd person shooter of Blue Archive Really love that game but I don't got a good mobile device for it and I'm not fond of pushing my old laptop to it's limit on emulators to play it
Their tension is why I was hoping they would keep Japan as a pain in the ass for Solo Leveling. And Solo Leveling doesn't like USA either. Lots of fiction gives hate to USA but Japan never gets any hate. I love Japan but other counties should have a beef with them.
Honestly, can’t even be excited for this after Stellar Blade was ruined. So we’ll have to just wait and see. Don’t let Sony get ahold of them. The censorship is unacceptable.
As a South African who's just recently started a career in the game design industry, I can also confirm that there are a lot of South African studios that are also gearing up for breaking into the market. Not right now, but soon. Great coverage as always Mugen
I was very surprised to know that they are aiming the home console market. I thought they only targeted the mobile market with their well known super-aggressive microtransactions and their MMOs on PC. I think one of the first sign on this new focus was the announcement of Crimson Desert, that morphed from an online co-op game or something like that to a full single player title... at least for now.
I think the interesting part here is where the consoles will be within 5 years from now. The og devs games gets more stale as the time goes, in five years from now if the koreans put some good titles out there they will blow up in popularity. We already have a bunch of titles being cooked like Chrono Oddissey, Pearl Abyss working on Crimson Desert and Plan 8, Vindictus, The First Descendant, and a bunch of projects that still have no names like Project TH (seems like Hitman), NCSoft Project LLL (similar to Crysis), Inzoi (Sims like game), Project M, Project V (monster hunter?), and the list goes on.
pretty cool you made a video on this topic because it is something that occurred to me a while ago and I havent seen anyone else discuss about it. Korea has been taking the soft power approach for decades, in order to compete with its big neighbors (China and Japan). cosmetics, doramas, movies, smartphones... probably the best stunt is k-pop, that took the world in a huge wave and made BTS the biggest and most successful group in the planet. but as always happen in the music industry, no genre stays in the top of the charts forever. and they are definitely taking some notes on that, noticing how a lot of k-pop shows are not selling out anymore and many even getting cancelled for low sales. the writing is on the wall and for me, they are already switching their focus to a new thing. games. a curious case that exemplifies my point is that BTS agency, that became one of the biggest enterprises in Korea, recently opened a division to develop... not new idol groups, but games! korean game studios have been on a huge rise recently specially because they, cleverly, noticed there is a huge market to be conquered since western studios have pretty much all gone woke and are suffering losses after losses. rightfully so. and japanese companies, recently have also started to go down that route, in probably one more case of Japan imitating americans. lol so one just needs to give the people what they want and then... profit! a huge market is up for takers and korean studios seem to understand that. look at Stellar Blade, Vindictus, First Descendent...

And the best part is, they knocked it out of the park on their FIRST TRY. And since you mentioned China, the next game I am anticipating is Black Myth Wukong. What a breath of fresh air.
I just hope Korea won't bend the knee to the west , I heard that feminism is actually worse there
I like Chinese and Korean made games, I enjoy the old IGS arcade games like Knights of Valour. But my only concern is the live service stuff and microtransactions.
Chinese devs are really good, but the problem with them is they are still stuck in the gacha scene.
@@Njin8492 The CCP encourages their people to consoom products, that's why Disney makes a lot of money in China
They can just go full-blown on Steam. Playstation and Xbox especially can go bankrupt for all I care.
@jinraigami3349 Hell no, i spent 500 dollars on my console
consoles are no longer region locked, this means you can circumvent localizers by getting the Korean version of the game from places like PlayAsia instead of the western version
Just hope they could make their own console..
I'm still waiting for news from DokeV.
They really do be releasing bangers like lies of P and Stellarblade( havent played it yet but i heard its awesome) I think it's great though, higher level of competition might mean better games in the future. That said, still got a long way to go before they reach fromsoftware's tier but im excited for whats to come
Good I’m looking foward to then taking over and getting good games
And I truly hope they do.
There's a Korean Sims in the Making, EA is gonna crumble. InZoi
And don't forget The First Descendants is basically Warframe and Destiny mix together.
nah EA and the Sims will NOT crumble. Not even a dent.
Have you even SEEN Inzoi and how shitty its running in even the latest dev video?? that game is barely hitting 15-20 fps at all time. You think ppl are gona get rtx4090s to play a korean Sim?? lol
@@heyjeySigma It's STILL EARLY developpment.
I dunno about Korea on PC but South Korea is absolute powerhouse when it comes to mobile games.
Might seem insignificant but on often low cost and sustainable income - those are money printers.
Oh, good. Then I can get uncensored games.
Sony sucks. That’s all. Thank you.
Love Korea: i wanna live there
Warning, do not romanticize countries you have never visited. You will get hit with a culture shock that you may never recover from.
I for one welcome our future Korean overlords.
Good because the US ain't cutting it anymore. They fumbled this console generation BAD. Worst in history
do they also plan to make them fun or interesting? or only shiny, cause Korea has been making games for several decades and people still fail to name me ONE singular iconic korean made videogame character... Some bland NPC from Tera, or BDO? Lann from Vindictus? XDXDXD Korean games are glossy turds with the depth of a mobile app, and the identity of an NFT.
They need to create their own console. Bye, Sony and Microsoft
That would be fucking interesting to see!
This will be interesting to see how the industry will look in the coming decade.
Your videos are getting better and better. Keep up the good work! You'll be at 30K subs by the end of the Summer 🔥
Wow thanks!
I will support Korean Studios as long as they avoid Soyny and Micr$hit! Straight to PC or no thanks!
As long as their game cultural division sector doesn't go in Bed with WOKE, DEI, BRIDGE, ESG then we good
From economic theory perspective, the government can't invest, investment is private.
Get off your BS the game is still good.
@@joshuajefferson3504 You want to pay for false advertisement than be my guest. The one paying for BS is you not me. Have a nice day.

This may sound crazy but i wouldn't be surprised if samsung might create there own gaming console in the next few years...
If Lies of P and Stellar Blade are the first punches thrown, they’re coming out swinging for sure.
if koreans have thier own consoles that would be a huge plus cause no one will try to censor them ... as for korean games in japanese console id say yeah but stellar blade wont be the last one cause sony wont stop censoring
Yep. And they plan to use a super sophisticated strategy. It is called "doing what gamers want".
They wont be dominating anything if they continue to only release on select platforms *cough* Soyny and Stellar Blade *cough*
I'd love to see a 3rd person shooter of Blue Archive
Really love that game but I don't got a good mobile device for it and I'm not fond of pushing my old laptop to it's limit on emulators to play it
I'll tell you what I think
Pearl Abyss, where you at?
Oh go ahead please. If you pay attention Korean makes games in very Japanese fashion, so I'm in.
So long as they don't sign contracts with Sony, Microsoft, and Tencent then they'll be fine.
Can't wait for The First Descendant and Vindictus Defying Fate
The same company that also made Dungeon Fighter goat game btw
I hope so bc im besides gta 6 im kinda done with western games, asian media all the way like Disgaea and Yakuza
Praying that Vindictus is gonna be shipped censorship free.
Whether Korea is massively successful or not, the competition for good games will help with pricing & quality. Good job catching this MugenLord.
Thanks!
Looking forward to The First Berserker: Khazan and The Relic: The First Guardian
Yeah, i saw Khazan trailer, it look like really simple, but enjoyable old slasher, like ninja gaiden 2, where you going straight and rip everyone.
What is the name of the other title in your thumbnail? I get stellar blade and lies of P, but what's the other one?
Korea might launch a Samsung console to rival Sony.
Their tension is why I was hoping they would keep Japan as a pain in the ass for Solo Leveling. And Solo Leveling doesn't like USA either.
Lots of fiction gives hate to USA but Japan never gets any hate. I love Japan but other counties should have a beef with them.
Well, that's an interesting take lol.
Honestly, can’t even be excited for this after Stellar Blade was ruined. So we’ll have to just wait and see. Don’t let Sony get ahold of them. The censorship is unacceptable.
If a game is rated M for mature, it shouldn’t be censored at all
The problem with consoles is woke, I hope they focus too on PCs.
fellas dont its getting hard to rely on these studios to give us what we want. Make it yourself at this point
not surprising. all of there games are awesome
As a South African who's just recently started a career in the game design industry, I can also confirm that there are a lot of South African studios that are also gearing up for breaking into the market. Not right now, but soon. Great coverage as always Mugen
The more competition, the better for consumers.
Lies of P is one of the best games I've ever played.
I'm down for more Korean games in the market.
What game is playing at 6:58? it looks sick.
10th gen Samsung console?
"Shut up and take my Won!" 🤑💵💰
Dear Korea, the PC exists too...
They need to stay away from Sony.
