My main complaint about current Gen gaming is that innovation and gameplay advancement seem to have stagnated since the end of the PS3/360 era. We have seen enormous progress in the way we directly interact with games and the worlds they simulate during the 90's and 2000's, but from 2014 onwards this seems to have come to a halt where we are essentially always playing the exact same games reskinned slightly differently. DX made a good point about this topic in his "Where is next gen gameplay?" video essay.

I've been tired of arrogant Sony for a while and it pushed me to finally get serious about PC. I hate playing on K/M at a desk so last year I youtubed how to build a PC. I built a gaming PC for the living room and play it like a console. It's amazing and while hardware may cost a bit more, you save so much on steam sales or getting steam keys through authorized dealers and I play SF6/GBFVSR online for free. Even buying games at launch are cheaper sometimes. I paid $10 less for both BG3 and Dragon's Dogma 2. No Pro for me. PS5 is my last Sony console. PC and Switch only from now on.
Also another thing I would like to share is the reason why most games flop is due to gaming consulting companies like Sweet Baby Inc, or Anita Sarkeesian starting her own consultation company so she can get her flowers and that ESG/DEI/BRIDGE funding that she wants to get so she can remain relevant. And if gaming companies cut the bloat with all the consultation groups and focus on making games entertaining over pushing whatever political views someone has, then we wouldn't be in this massive slump, and also they need to make characters likeable and appealing for gamers. And that is my two cents.
Oh hey Mr. A, didn't know you subbed to Mugenlord too. But yeah, Anita Sarkeesian and her ilk very much ruined gaming, so much so that I'm actually pining for the grey/brown/bloom era of gaming where every game is vying to be the next Call of Duty. Fortunately there is a light at the end of the tunnel as we're seeing with games like Space Marine 2 and such telling people like Shitty Baby's Stank to go f*** themselves. And what's more, there's also a really cool looking grimdark extraction shooter called The Forever Winter and I'm already loving the art style which gives me all the Armored Core (Gen 5 obviously), Front Mission, Ghost in the Shell, Blame, and VOTOMS vibes that I very much love.

This is so far the worst gaiming generation ever. Im from the 2600 era, I grew up with arcade, saw the evolution of the golden age of gaiming, from blocks to polygons. The problem with gaiming is that it became mainstream, a hobby for nerds, geeks, rejected and a few casuals, a hobby for a small group, and because of that a lot of people which have no clue how this market work are taking control of it, thinking first in their pockets, in making happy their investors first and way later their true followers. Thats why we see DEI stuff, meaningless console refresh, predatory practices, broken games, ultra realistic and easy boring games and all that bs that we hate, leaving aside the 2 most important ingredients, fun and replay value. Right now there is no passion, no creativity, everything is focus in multiplayer or in casuals that doesn't care, just to make money. Nintendo is the only one that understand it. The only way to stop it is to continue speaking with the wallet, supporting old games retuns, classic collections, indie games and games, no matter if is AAA or AA, that are made for gamers first, made for fun. They depend on us, not the other way.
On my end of the Atlantic we had one of the biggest videogame centers in the World SEGA WORLD! With over 6 levels of a floor plan of over half a million square foot of space and over thousand popular videogame arcade cabinets fighting, racing on rails shooters we even had the R360 combat simulator and us old time dweebs would always goto SEGA WORLD every weekend n holiday even with the popularity of home videogame systems. But as the economy went down the crapper no thanks to the socialist PM tony the traitor like everything that was good for us in the long it came to a soul crushing end.

I'm glad I'm a Nintendo fan and have remained a fan of Nintendo. Regardless of anything they do that people act like they hold a dumb grudge about, or expecting certain things for Nintendo to do or include on their consoles, I don't ever care about that junk. All that matters is their "blue ocean strategy" and the complete quality games that their teams and 3rd party partners develop for them. Which is why the Nintendo Switch has been dominating this generation and where all the best games are at. Quality over quantity While Sony, Microsoft, and every western 3rd party developer (and maybe a few Japanese devs) are killing their studios that we keep hearing news about. From layoffs, to pandering to people like Sweet Baby Inc, censorships, etc. The last PlayStation console I ever owned was the PS2. The Gamecube, PS2, and OG Xbox generation is still such a special time in gaming and just life in general during those years. I had a PS3 for a full and a half and just completely lost interest in PS entirely and sold it. Xbox was never my type of system but at the time I did respect some of the franchises they had that very somewhat "quality". And I'm definitely not a fan of PC gaming. Like 90% of games from western developers (Excluding indie developers) I don't care about and/or have never played, and that's fine. I'm not missing out on anything. Their games are just more of the same. Some Japanese devs do have their faults as well from chasing trends, altering their franchise's gameplay to be something else they think fans will like (Action RPGs, Soulslike, Live services, etc), and kneeling to the woke propaganda, I (And some fans as well) won't even bother buying/playing their games because of that. Cant speak on Switch or Xbox but the 5 has been a let down, sony has lost their way bad this gen. Between a lack of exclusives enforcing of agendas censoring of games and this latest 5Pro nonsense im done moving forward with anything modern.
I'm perfectly happy with my ps4. Plus i still have my ps3, unfortunately my ps2 broke years ago and i had to throw it away. I have no desire to hop over to next gen. I’ve been playing The First Descendant and NIKKE more than ever. This generation of gaming, the list is severely low to me. If they are going all digital. I’ll just play on PC and wait for discount. Cause I know they are going to jump the price on these base games with no content.

I finally got a PS5 months ago, and there's not a lot of compelling games on it, whether it's cross gen or exclusive to current gen. I mostly try to clear my backlog from last gen, because most games this gen have seen a lot of censorship, DEI nonsense, broken on launch while charging $70, unnecessary remasters and remakes catered to the modern audience, and not taking advantage of the tech, which makes the PS5 pointless.
Simple question: Which would give you a longer and more fun experience? -A PS5 Pro with all the compatible games -or a PS2 and all of its compatible games? Yeah, I thought so.
Yeah wouldn’t even get that Pro if I was in the market and settle for a base model with that price difference because that’s a whole lot of used games that can be bought for the extra $250-300. Just ordered Space Marine 2 on SeriesX myself so am playing through the OG on 360 currently. Not sure how I missed it back in the day or why it skipped an entire very long console generation to get a sequel but am very happy it did!
Was born in '91 and started gaming on SNES with Super Mario World, I guess just to give some context to where I started and where I'm at now. Nintendo has very rarely disappointed me, maybe my standards are just not high but I never cared as much about the raw technical aspects of games in general beyond what they can do for aesthetics or functionality and care much more about game design itself. so it's been no big deal to me that they've been slow to adapt to things like discs(and interestingly go back to cartridges) or HD graphics which I think has actually done well to allow them more time to see what works and what doesn't. Now, that's not to say I like many of their business practices, especially since Iwata passed away it seems. In particular, what they are attempting to do to the Palworld devs feels really disgusting, but then not really out of character for them either at this point unfortunately. I guess when you are in their position, you feel you have to be just as overzealous as Disney. That all said, brother and I also grew up with PS1 and 2, mostly for games like GTA, but some other neat stuff here and there. And then when I got my first job I thought to myself, I love the Wii and all but the rate at which games were releasing on it was a bit slow, so I got myself a 360 and started playing stuff like Halo 3. Had already felt like my horizons had expanded getting into games made by GHM but having a console with more robust online features and meeting friends that way were some of my favorite memories to look back on, even if I haven't kept in touch with them. I think this was why I was so disappointed in their next console, though...Sunset Overdrive was a blast on Xbox One, but then Halo 5 was a huge let down for me, and with Rare Replay being a nice package but just old games, I couldn't see any reason to keep it, and so I sold it in maybe less than a year of actually owning it. Let me drive the point home that I thought the WiiU was worth keeping. PS3 I got pretty late, only really being interested in it to get into the MGS games when I found a used one pretty cheap. It's been surprisingly something I've gone back to often for a lot of niche stuff. PS4 I was kind of whatever on at first until they announced Bloodborne, and for the most part I'd been happy with it until the overwhelming success got to Sony's heads and deciding to start censoring games they had no part in like Dead or Alive or Senran Kagura, half of the appeal of the system for me. Ever since then I've not bought any first party games from them and never had any plans on picking up a PS5, with many of the uncensored versions of games coming to either PC or Switch, there was really no reason. So as far as "current gen" goes, I had been wary of even bothering to get a Switch, a bit miffed WiiU was cut short, but was finally convinced when the next No More Heroes game was announced after so many years of thinking we would never get a sequel. While there are certain things I dislike about it, again going into some business practices such as replacing the far superior Virtual Console with the subscription model, or just flat out not having anything like Miiverse, there has been tons and tons of fun, niche third party games to choose from as well as a very strong first party lineup, as usual. It really helps that it isn't region locked, either, though it seems many companies are striving towards global releases if they can. Other than that, I'd finally got myself a gaming PC a couple years ago. Had always been one to think it was far too complicated and costly, and even now I think the option I did go with was not the smartest investment on my part, but did a lease-to-own program to get a simple gaming laptop with a 3050ti. Only thing I had to add myself was 8gb more ram on top of what is already in there which was surprisingly a very simple process. For the types of games I tend to play, it has worked exceedingly well, the only games it has struggled at all with being Halo Infinite and Starfield, the latter of which doesn't seem to run well on any given PC and one I found really not worth playing to begin with. I don't know how viable this thing will be too far down the line, but it's been one of the gaming purchases I've been the happiest with, just with how convenient and easy it is to use along with plenty more options with things like mods. This is getting pretty long but overall I think that going forward, Nintendo and PC are really just what I'll stick with. With both Microsoft and Sony seemingly releasing to PC anyway, it doesn't seem smart to me to even bother entertaining the thought of buying any new consoles they make, especially moving more towards an all digital future. I would rather have the open market on PC at the very least than a monopoly that would undoubtedly form on either of those. The same goes for Nintendo, which is why I'd have to see what they're making next, but I really doubt they will jump on that bandwagon just as quickly before they see how the dust settles for themselves. I think gaming in general has certainly seen better days, and I feel a large part of that is many of these companies sinking huge investments banking on even bigger returns, all the while trying to throw out propaganda to try and ensure they have dimwitted consumers, which just doesn't work on the vast majority of people...but then that simply means you've got plenty of room for indies or simply smaller devs to be able to move around a bit more freely and thrive for once instead of being under the iron fist of these bullies. I guess at this point it just boils down to your particular preferences for what kind of games you enjoy.
PS5 Pro is doing what the base system should have been doing already. One system is enough. These mid gen boosts are stupid. It's like saying we sold you trash originally, now here's the upgrade. Spend more money. It's dumb. Make the best system you can make from the start and keep it that way until the next system.
Yeah the crossplatforming nonsense is ridiculous. There's already very few reasons to own a console these days, but if you are also making your games for the previous gen then that even makes a console more useless than it already was. You still aren't going to get graphics as good as the best PC, so what is the point? The games should be focusing on how their new hardware would allow them to maximize new types of unique gameplay that wouldn't be possible before. But they don't do this because of also releasing for last gen.
I think one of the main reasons that this generation is a disappointment to many people is the lack of amazing new IPs. Most new games that are releasing are mid at best sequels to game series that we've been playing since at least the PS3/Xbox 360 generation. Besides nintendo, nobody is taking risks anymore. Which is understandable from a business standpoint but still disappointing.

Plus this shows that ubisoft wasn't the only people pushing "owning nothing" motto, that it's actually the entire industry. I do agree this might be the last console generation, since Playstation already pushing disk-less consoles. I'll probably switch to computer once the ps6 launches.

My PS4's still got some juice left in it. I'm good. Plus, I'm seriously thinking about getting an XBOX One, purely for all the stuff on Gamepass and XBOX Live. It'll offer me a hell of a lot more than the current gen consoles lol.
They need to remake or do sequels to older gems. Like Chaos Legion, Galerians, fucking King's Field. That would be kickass on the newer hardware. All we're getting is watered down Souls games at this point. And even if you consider Horizon a decent game. Why would you want to replay it? I got 20 mins into Forbidden West and immediately put it down. It was free w the PS5, but it just felt like I was playing Zero Dawn all over again. Which I just couldn't tolerate!🤬
The PS3 generation was great for gamers - I bought practically every 3rd person story driven (1st party) game that Sony made. The PS4 generation really was ‘for the players’ and it felt that was the goal, and again I bought most of the big games. Ghost of Tsushima, amazing. I’m surprised my PS3 and PS4 didn’t brick from the heat of everyday usage. In contrast I don’t think I have any 1st party games for the PS5. I did order quite a few of their big timed exclusives such as Hogwarts Legacy and FFXV1 but for me Sony’s newest 1st party games (Uncharted 1-3, LOU1 from PS3 gen were among my favorite early Sony 1st party games) and the new ones just don’t hold the same appeal as Sony’s earlier games. I’d prefer to have good writing and gameplay over realistic graphics. Too bad the PS5 Pro isn’t backwards compatible farther back than the PS4 gen, it might then be worthwhile. This generation of gaming is indeed lackluster compared to the previous generations. Out of the three, Nintendo is the only one that got me truly excited for what's coming to the future. Obviously, that's not saying much for Sony and Microsoft have gone downhill. The Xbox brand is dead. The only Xbox console I own is the 360. That and the OG Xbox are the only console that represents what the Xbox brand was, and it's a shame how Microsoft never fully recovered after dropping the ball with the Xbox One. The Playstation brand is but a shadow of its former self. I still play my Playstation consoles and will get a PS5, but Sony has been very lackluster in terms of creativity, fun, and innovation in their games. They need to go back of what made them, them. With Astro Bot receiving high praise all around and appealing with the modern audience failing, Sony needs to revive their older IPs and go back being themselves. Regarding the PS5 Pro. I'll would get it, IF it had a disc drive and stand at the get-go. They've followed the typical obvious blunder of companies by committing lack of sense. This upgrade console is NOT going to sell as much as Sony would expect, especially in the upcoming holiday season. How many of the average man would spend $700-$800 for a PS5 Pro over the OG PS5 that cost either $400 or $500, the Xbox Series X/S that cost the same as the OG PS5, or the Switch that cost $300 for the OG, $200 for the Lite, and $350 for the OLED? You might as well use that money to get a gaming PC instead.
That's basically why I say that indie and middle market are pretty the light at the end of the bunghole that is the modern gaming industry, or at the very least big games like Space Marine 2 that's flat out telling all the Anita Sarkeesians, the Shitty Baby's Stanks, and the Professor Otakus to go kick rocks. Hell, I'm already stoked for a little known extraction shooter set in a grimdark post-apocalyptic dystopia called The Forever Winter, and lemme tell ya, there is a lot of Killzone and Spec Ops: The Line influence in this game and not to mention a lot of Ghost in the Shell, Blame, Armored Core V/Verdict Day, Front Mission, and Armored Trooper VOTOMS vibes in the game's art design, especially for the mecha which are legit VOTOMS as FUCK!
The negatives have certainly been louder, that's for sure. Both MS and Sony have been taking all sorts of L's. MS still firing people, and Sony with Concord and the PS5 Con. Now Nintendo is suing Palworld over patents. Thankfully I do have fun games to play.
There still are a number of games that are on the PS5 that aren't on the PS4, and examples like Castlevania: Dominus Collection show that gaming companies are now starting to transition away from providing games for the PS4/"last gen" consoles (You're telling me that the switch can handle that game, but not the PS4? BS). Eventually, games will stop being available for "last gen consoles", and once enough desirable games are slated to be as such, that's when I will transition to "current gen choices". Regardless, I agree with you that gaming in the last several years has been quite disappointing - too many remasters & remakes of games that don't necessarily need remakes & remasters (Naughty Dog especially as you highlighted), & too many disappointing choices on the game creation side in multitudes of ways. I'm certain that myself and a bunch of others could have helped steer developmental and conceptual choices in games on such better and higher quality paths if we had the chance, and it's a damn shame that we don't/can't (It's a shame that all of my ideas, concepts, & direction towards both Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad will never see the light of day...).
PS5 actually the worst console in Sony generation. Their first party exclusive games really low and some of em actually available on ps4, pc, xbox, switch. Their live service games are trash and what they can do at the moment only remake and remaster game from ps3 and ps4 where gameplay actually matter than graphics. This is a nothing generation-the "Pro+ Era." Everything is merely an upgrade of the previous generation's specs. At this point, we need to go beyond graphics; there needs to be a shift in how we play. The way we interface with games should be innovated. Honestly, I think it could start with a complete redesign of the modern game controller. The dual analog sticks, bumpers, and triggers should be rethought, perhaps with an assortment of genre-specific controllers customizable to the consumer. Developers need more intricate ways of designing gameplay. Imagine being able to customize your character's animations. Character creation wouldn’t stop at appearance or class; you could customize how your character swings a sword, shoots, or fights. The next generation needs to push forward on a significant level in design and stable, high-level gameplay.
To prevent that horrid future. The PS 5 Pro must fail...and not sell well....vote with your wallets you have the power to decide what fate console gaming goes towards.... it's in our hands...
This is why I moved to VR and Mixed Reality gaming as gaming on the TV is complete rubbish other than GTA 5 every game is the same it's either a fps with Zombies or a fps set in space the Meta Quest 3 is better than the PS5 as I own both and I own a PSVR2 and I play my Meta Quest 3 way more than my ps5
It’s not the current gen of games that is disappointing. In fact there’s a lot of games out there from big to small developers dropping heat. A lot of people have adopted this elitist mindset which leaves them with very little games to play. There’s TONS of great games out there to play this current gen.

For me, the only way I buy a new generation console is if they have at least 3-5 games I’m really interested. For the PS5, the only game I want to play is FF7 Rebirth but I feel like that game is going to come to PC here soon. The only other use I get out of PS5 or Series X would be the 4K UHD Blu-ray player they come with. At this point I’ll wait for the used market to drop their values and I’ll keep chugging along with my large Switch library and retro games 😅

Almost every single woke game like Concord, Dustborn, Flintlock, SSKTJL, Saints Woke reboot, and many others were financial disasters and commercial FLOPS. Hell, Saints Row reboot was such a flop, that it caused its studio Volition to go bankrupt and shut down back in Sept of 2023 (exactly a year ago). And if thats not enough, the devs of Concord literally took Concord offline a few days ago on Sept 6th due to abysmal player numbers. Same with Dustborn, its all time player peak numbers was literally 83 people, not 8300, not 83,000 not 830,000, but literally 83 people. Numbers dont lie. Sales numbers dont lie. And studio closures (like Volition) dont lie. Wokeness simply doesn't sell, because if it did then all those games I mentioned above would've been a runaway success, but they're NOT. My main complaint about current Gen gaming is that innovation and gameplay advancement seem to have stagnated since the end of the PS3/360 era. We have seen enormous progress in the way we directly interact with games and the worlds they simulate during the 90's and 2000's, but from 2014 onwards this seems to have come to a halt where we are essentially always playing the exact same games reskinned slightly differently. DX made a good point about this topic in his "Where is next gen gameplay?" video essay.

I've been tired of arrogant Sony for a while and it pushed me to finally get serious about PC. I hate playing on K/M at a desk so last year I youtubed how to build a PC. I built a gaming PC for the living room and play it like a console. It's amazing and while hardware may cost a bit more, you save so much on steam sales or getting steam keys through authorized dealers and I play SF6/GBFVSR online for free. Even buying games at launch are cheaper sometimes. I paid $10 less for both BG3 and Dragon's Dogma 2. No Pro for me.
PS5 is my last Sony console. PC and Switch only from now on.
Also another thing I would like to share is the reason why most games flop is due to gaming consulting companies like Sweet Baby Inc, or Anita Sarkeesian starting her own consultation company so she can get her flowers and that ESG/DEI/BRIDGE funding that she wants to get so she can remain relevant. And if gaming companies cut the bloat with all the consultation groups and focus on making games entertaining over pushing whatever political views someone has, then we wouldn't be in this massive slump, and also they need to make characters likeable and appealing for gamers. And that is my two cents.

But yeah, Anita Sarkeesian and her ilk very much ruined gaming, so much so that I'm actually pining for the grey/brown/bloom era of gaming where every game is vying to be the next Call of Duty. Fortunately there is a light at the end of the tunnel as we're seeing with games like Space Marine 2 and such telling people like Shitty Baby's Stank to go f*** themselves. And what's more, there's also a really cool looking grimdark extraction shooter called The Forever Winter and I'm already loving the art style which gives me all the Armored Core (Gen 5 obviously), Front Mission, Ghost in the Shell, Blame, and VOTOMS vibes that I very much love.

This is so far the worst gaiming generation ever. Im from the 2600 era, I grew up with arcade, saw the evolution of the golden age of gaiming, from blocks to polygons. The problem with gaiming is that it became mainstream, a hobby for nerds, geeks, rejected and a few casuals, a hobby for a small group, and because of that a lot of people which have no clue how this market work are taking control of it, thinking first in their pockets, in making happy their investors first and way later their true followers. Thats why we see DEI stuff, meaningless console refresh, predatory practices, broken games, ultra realistic and easy boring games and all that bs that we hate, leaving aside the 2 most important ingredients, fun and replay value. Right now there is no passion, no creativity, everything is focus in multiplayer or in casuals that doesn't care, just to make money. Nintendo is the only one that understand it. The only way to stop it is to continue speaking with the wallet, supporting old games retuns, classic collections, indie games and games, no matter if is AAA or AA, that are made for gamers first, made for fun. They depend on us, not the other way.
On my end of the Atlantic we had one of the biggest videogame centers in the World SEGA WORLD! With over 6 levels of a floor plan of over half a million square foot of space and over thousand popular videogame arcade cabinets fighting, racing on rails shooters we even had the R360 combat simulator and us old time dweebs would always goto SEGA WORLD every weekend n holiday even with the popularity of home videogame systems. But as the economy went down the crapper no thanks to the socialist PM tony the traitor like everything that was good for us in the long it came to a soul crushing end.

I'm glad I'm a Nintendo fan and have remained a fan of Nintendo. Regardless of anything they do that people act like they hold a dumb grudge about, or expecting certain things for Nintendo to do or include on their consoles, I don't ever care about that junk. All that matters is their "blue ocean strategy" and the complete quality games that their teams and 3rd party partners develop for them. Which is why the Nintendo Switch has been dominating this generation and where all the best games are at. Quality over quantity While Sony, Microsoft, and every western 3rd party developer (and maybe a few Japanese devs) are killing their studios that we keep hearing news about. From layoffs, to pandering to people like Sweet Baby Inc, censorships, etc. The last PlayStation console I ever owned was the PS2. The Gamecube, PS2, and OG Xbox generation is still such a special time in gaming and just life in general during those years. I had a PS3 for a full and a half and just completely lost interest in PS entirely and sold it. Xbox was never my type of system but at the time I did respect some of the franchises they had that very somewhat "quality". And I'm definitely not a fan of PC gaming. Like 90% of games from western developers (Excluding indie developers) I don't care about and/or have never played, and that's fine. I'm not missing out on anything. Their games are just more of the same. Some Japanese devs do have their faults as well from chasing trends, altering their franchise's gameplay to be something else they think fans will like (Action RPGs, Soulslike, Live services, etc), and kneeling to the woke propaganda, I (And some fans as well) won't even bother buying/playing their games because of that.

I play games, not consoles. Without amazing games on a console made for me as a consumer, that console, like the PS5 Pro, isn't a factor.
I'm perfectly happy with my ps4. Plus i still have my ps3, unfortunately my ps2 broke years ago and i had to throw it away. I have no desire to hop over to next gen. There's no games on the PS5 that i'm interested in enough to drop $500-$700 on. Hell no. I don't got money like that lol. Whatever new game that comes i'll just watch on youtube if i'm interested 😂😅.
I’ve been playing The First Descendant and NIKKE more than ever. This generation of gaming, the list is severely low to me. If they are going all digital. I’ll just play on PC and wait for discount. Cause I know they are going to jump the price on these base games with no content.

Technically speaking, the long console gens started in the 6th gen with the Dreamcast in 1998 and lasted until 2005 when the Xbox 360 was revealed.
I'm building a PC very soon once i get all the components delivered. I am done with DEI, ESG , whatever acronym they decide to shift to once the label becomes Toxic and its not because i was unhappy with Xbox BUT because the agenda is so annoying now i needs Mods to fix or entirely replace that trash in games.

I finally got a PS5 months ago, and there's not a lot of compelling games on it, whether it's cross gen or exclusive to current gen.
I mostly try to clear my backlog from last gen, because most games this gen have seen a lot of censorship, DEI nonsense, broken on launch while charging $70, unnecessary remasters and remakes catered to the modern audience, and not taking advantage of the tech, which makes the PS5 pointless.
Simple question:
Which would give you a longer and more fun experience?
-A PS5 Pro with all the compatible games
-or a PS2 and all of its compatible games?

The only thing I found useful is Xbox backwards compatibility. I get to enjoy the OG Need for Speed Most Wanted.
Yeah wouldn’t even get that Pro if I was in the market and settle for a base model with that price difference because that’s a whole lot of used games that can be bought for the extra $250-300. Just ordered Space Marine 2 on SeriesX myself so am playing through the OG on 360 currently. Not sure how I missed it back in the day or why it skipped an entire very long console generation to get a sequel but am very happy it did!
Was born in '91 and started gaming on SNES with Super Mario World, I guess just to give some context to where I started and where I'm at now. Nintendo has very rarely disappointed me, maybe my standards are just not high but I never cared as much about the raw technical aspects of games in general beyond what they can do for aesthetics or functionality and care much more about game design itself. so it's been no big deal to me that they've been slow to adapt to things like discs(and interestingly go back to cartridges) or HD graphics which I think has actually done well to allow them more time to see what works and what doesn't. Now, that's not to say I like many of their business practices, especially since Iwata passed away it seems. In particular, what they are attempting to do to the Palworld devs feels really disgusting, but then not really out of character for them either at this point unfortunately. I guess when you are in their position, you feel you have to be just as overzealous as Disney.
That all said, brother and I also grew up with PS1 and 2, mostly for games like GTA, but some other neat stuff here and there. And then when I got my first job I thought to myself, I love the Wii and all but the rate at which games were releasing on it was a bit slow, so I got myself a 360 and started playing stuff like Halo 3. Had already felt like my horizons had expanded getting into games made by GHM but having a console with more robust online features and meeting friends that way were some of my favorite memories to look back on, even if I haven't kept in touch with them. I think this was why I was so disappointed in their next console, though...Sunset Overdrive was a blast on Xbox One, but then Halo 5 was a huge let down for me, and with Rare Replay being a nice package but just old games, I couldn't see any reason to keep it, and so I sold it in maybe less than a year of actually owning it. Let me drive the point home that I thought the WiiU was worth keeping.
PS3 I got pretty late, only really being interested in it to get into the MGS games when I found a used one pretty cheap. It's been surprisingly something I've gone back to often for a lot of niche stuff. PS4 I was kind of whatever on at first until they announced Bloodborne, and for the most part I'd been happy with it until the overwhelming success got to Sony's heads and deciding to start censoring games they had no part in like Dead or Alive or Senran Kagura, half of the appeal of the system for me. Ever since then I've not bought any first party games from them and never had any plans on picking up a PS5, with many of the uncensored versions of games coming to either PC or Switch, there was really no reason.
So as far as "current gen" goes, I had been wary of even bothering to get a Switch, a bit miffed WiiU was cut short, but was finally convinced when the next No More Heroes game was announced after so many years of thinking we would never get a sequel. While there are certain things I dislike about it, again going into some business practices such as replacing the far superior Virtual Console with the subscription model, or just flat out not having anything like Miiverse, there has been tons and tons of fun, niche third party games to choose from as well as a very strong first party lineup, as usual. It really helps that it isn't region locked, either, though it seems many companies are striving towards global releases if they can. Other than that, I'd finally got myself a gaming PC a couple years ago. Had always been one to think it was far too complicated and costly, and even now I think the option I did go with was not the smartest investment on my part, but did a lease-to-own program to get a simple gaming laptop with a 3050ti. Only thing I had to add myself was 8gb more ram on top of what is already in there which was surprisingly a very simple process. For the types of games I tend to play, it has worked exceedingly well, the only games it has struggled at all with being Halo Infinite and Starfield, the latter of which doesn't seem to run well on any given PC and one I found really not worth playing to begin with. I don't know how viable this thing will be too far down the line, but it's been one of the gaming purchases I've been the happiest with, just with how convenient and easy it is to use along with plenty more options with things like mods.
This is getting pretty long but overall I think that going forward, Nintendo and PC are really just what I'll stick with. With both Microsoft and Sony seemingly releasing to PC anyway, it doesn't seem smart to me to even bother entertaining the thought of buying any new consoles they make, especially moving more towards an all digital future. I would rather have the open market on PC at the very least than a monopoly that would undoubtedly form on either of those. The same goes for Nintendo, which is why I'd have to see what they're making next, but I really doubt they will jump on that bandwagon just as quickly before they see how the dust settles for themselves. I think gaming in general has certainly seen better days, and I feel a large part of that is many of these companies sinking huge investments banking on even bigger returns, all the while trying to throw out propaganda to try and ensure they have dimwitted consumers, which just doesn't work on the vast majority of people...but then that simply means you've got plenty of room for indies or simply smaller devs to be able to move around a bit more freely and thrive for once instead of being under the iron fist of these bullies. I guess at this point it just boils down to your particular preferences for what kind of games you enjoy.
PS5 Pro is doing what the base system should have been doing already. One system is enough. These mid gen boosts are stupid. It's like saying we sold you trash originally, now here's the upgrade. Spend more money. It's dumb. Make the best system you can make from the start and keep it that way until the next system.
Yeah the crossplatforming nonsense is ridiculous. There's already very few reasons to own a console these days, but if you are also making your games for the previous gen then that even makes a console more useless than it already was. You still aren't going to get graphics as good as the best PC, so what is the point? The games should be focusing on how their new hardware would allow them to maximize new types of unique gameplay that wouldn't be possible before. But they don't do this because of also releasing for last gen.

I think one of the main reasons that this generation is a disappointment to many people is the lack of amazing new IPs. Most new games that are releasing are mid at best sequels to game series that we've been playing since at least the PS3/Xbox 360 generation. Besides nintendo, nobody is taking risks anymore. Which is understandable from a business standpoint but still disappointing.
Even Nintendo is taking the less risk route with the switch 2 which is the very same architecture with the specs on par with the steam deck ps4 level.

All we're getting is watered down Souls games at this point. And even if you consider Horizon a decent game. Why would you want to replay it? I got 20 mins into Forbidden West and immediately put it down. It was free w the PS5, but it just felt like I was playing Zero Dawn all over again. Which I just couldn't tolerate!🤬
The PS3 generation was great for gamers - I bought practically every 3rd person story driven (1st party) game that Sony made. The PS4 generation really was ‘for the players’ and it felt that was the goal, and again I bought most of the big games. Ghost of Tsushima, amazing. I’m surprised my PS3 and PS4 didn’t brick from the heat of everyday usage.
In contrast I don’t think I have any 1st party games for the PS5. I did order quite a few of their big timed exclusives such as Hogwarts Legacy and FFXV1 but for me Sony’s newest 1st party games (Uncharted 1-3, LOU1 from PS3 gen were among my favorite early Sony 1st party games) and the new ones just don’t hold the same appeal as Sony’s earlier games. I’d prefer to have good writing and gameplay over realistic graphics. Too bad the PS5 Pro isn’t backwards compatible farther back than the PS4 gen, it might then be worthwhile.

This generation of gaming is indeed lackluster compared to the previous generations. Out of the three, Nintendo is the only one that got me truly excited for what's coming to the future. Obviously, that's not saying much for Sony and Microsoft have gone downhill. The Xbox brand is dead. The only Xbox console I own is the 360. That and the OG Xbox are the only console that represents what the Xbox brand was, and it's a shame how Microsoft never fully recovered after dropping the ball with the Xbox One. The Playstation brand is but a shadow of its former self. I still play my Playstation consoles and will get a PS5, but Sony has been very lackluster in terms of creativity, fun, and innovation in their games. They need to go back of what made them, them. With Astro Bot receiving high praise all around and appealing with the modern audience failing, Sony needs to revive their older IPs and go back being themselves.
Regarding the PS5 Pro. I'll would get it, IF it had a disc drive and stand at the get-go. They've followed the typical obvious blunder of companies by committing lack of sense. This upgrade console is NOT going to sell as much as Sony would expect, especially in the upcoming holiday season. How many of the average man would spend $700-$800 for a PS5 Pro over the OG PS5 that cost either $400 or $500, the Xbox Series X/S that cost the same as the OG PS5, or the Switch that cost $300 for the OG, $200 for the Lite, and $350 for the OLED? You might as well use that money to get a gaming PC instead.
That's basically why I say that indie and middle market are pretty the light at the end of the bunghole that is the modern gaming industry, or at the very least big games like Space Marine 2 that's flat out telling all the Anita Sarkeesians, the Shitty Baby's Stanks, and the Professor Otakus to go kick rocks. Hell, I'm already stoked for a little known extraction shooter set in a grimdark post-apocalyptic dystopia called The Forever Winter, and lemme tell ya, there is a lot of Killzone and Spec Ops: The Line influence in this game and not to mention a lot of Ghost in the Shell, Blame, Armored Core V/Verdict Day, Front Mission, and Armored Trooper VOTOMS vibes in the game's art design, especially for the mecha which are legit VOTOMS as FUCK!

The negatives have certainly been louder, that's for sure. Both MS and Sony have been taking all sorts of L's. MS still firing people, and Sony with Concord and the PS5 Con. Now Nintendo is suing Palworld over patents. Thankfully I do have fun games to play.
There still are a number of games that are on the PS5 that aren't on the PS4, and examples like Castlevania: Dominus Collection show that gaming companies are now starting to transition away from providing games for the PS4/"last gen" consoles (You're telling me that the switch can handle that game, but not the PS4? BS).
Eventually, games will stop being available for "last gen consoles", and once enough desirable games are slated to be as such, that's when I will transition to "current gen choices".
Regardless, I agree with you that gaming in the last several years has been quite disappointing - too many remasters & remakes of games that don't necessarily need remakes & remasters (Naughty Dog especially as you highlighted), & too many disappointing choices on the game creation side in multitudes of ways. I'm certain that myself and a bunch of others could have helped steer developmental and conceptual choices in games on such better and higher quality paths if we had the chance, and it's a damn shame that we don't/can't (It's a shame that all of my ideas, concepts, & direction towards both Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad will never see the light of day...).
PS5 actually the worst console in Sony generation. Their first party exclusive games really low and some of em actually available on ps4, pc, xbox, switch. Their live service games are trash and what they can do at the moment only remake and remaster game from ps3 and ps4 where gameplay actually matter than graphics. PS2 always gonna be the best console (The Goat, The Myth, The Legend)
This is a nothing generation-the "Pro+ Era." Everything is merely an upgrade of the previous generation's specs. At this point, we need to go beyond graphics; there needs to be a shift in how we play. The way we interface with games should be innovated.
Honestly, I think it could start with a complete redesign of the modern game controller. The dual analog sticks, bumpers, and triggers should be rethought, perhaps with an assortment of genre-specific controllers customizable to the consumer.
Developers need more intricate ways of designing gameplay. Imagine being able to customize your character's animations. Character creation wouldn’t stop at appearance or class; you could customize how your character swings a sword, shoots, or fights.
The next generation needs to push forward on a significant level in design and stable, high-level gameplay.
To prevent that horrid future. The PS 5 Pro must fail...and not sell well....vote with your wallets you have the power to decide what fate console gaming goes towards.... it's in our hands...
This is why I moved to VR and Mixed Reality gaming as gaming on the TV is complete rubbish other than GTA 5 every game is the same it's either a fps with Zombies or a fps set in space the Meta Quest 3 is better than the PS5 as I own both and I own a PSVR2 and I play my Meta Quest 3 way more than my ps5

It’s not the current gen of games that is disappointing. In fact there’s a lot of games out there from big to small developers dropping heat. A lot of people have adopted this elitist mindset which leaves them with very little games to play. There’s TONS of great games out there to play this current gen.
I have more nintendo switch games than my ps5 and ps4. I like jrpg games and some mainstream games. If I could get it on the switch and it looks good on it. I'm getting on the switch. Lol.

Definitely releasing the current gen consoles during covid was not a bright idea the scalpers also damaged the adoption rate and devs delayed a lot of projects didn't help either

For me, the only way I buy a new generation console is if they have at least 3-5 games I’m really interested. For the PS5, the only game I want to play is FF7 Rebirth but I feel like that game is going to come to PC here soon. The only other use I get out of PS5 or Series X would be the 4K UHD Blu-ray player they come with. At this point I’ll wait for the used market to drop their values and I’ll keep chugging along with my large Switch library and retro games 😅

Almost every single woke game like Concord, Dustborn, Flintlock, SSKTJL, Saints Woke reboot, and many others were financial disasters and commercial FLOPS. Hell, Saints Row reboot was such a flop, that it caused its studio Volition to go bankrupt and shut down back in Sept of 2023 (exactly a year ago). And if thats not enough, the devs of Concord literally took Concord offline a few days ago on Sept 6th due to abysmal player numbers. Same with Dustborn, its all time player peak numbers was literally 83 people, not 8300, not 83,000 not 830,000, but literally 83 people.
Numbers dont lie. Sales numbers dont lie. And studio closures (like Volition) dont lie. Wokeness simply doesn't sell, because if it did then all those games I mentioned above would've been a runaway success, but they're NOT.

14:50 me too. I’m switching back to pc gaming. I’ll keep my ps5 to play my disc games. PS5, unless they’ll make ps6 backwards compatible with ps1/2/3/4/5, will be my last playstation console, same goes with my series x.
The ps5 pro will easily be 1000€ with all the mad scalping, going on in europe. The disc drives are sold for 120€ in stores separately as preorders already here instead of 80€.
Here in the US they are selling ps5 disc drives for like $300 or $400
