Seems like yesterday I picked up a Reader's Digest at the dentists' and read my first brief excerpt from James Herriott, then I sought the first volume (double volume in the USA) -- then the movie -- then the TV series. Simon West & Tristram fella do a great job in trying to live up to their preceders. No easy job. What they all did was to copy them bang on but yet let their own interpretation add to it. Somehow it works. Tristram no.2 (sorry name eludes) is actually even better, sorry Peter, as for James Herriot he is just the same, dull but as in the original he is the sounding board for all the characters to bounce off. One thing they don't do as the original is arms up cow poo tube. There is a stunt arm. Who knows it may belong to Christopher Timothy & Peter Davidson to supplement their meagre pensions. With Diana Rigg dying as Mrs Pumphrey & only series 1 they will have to recast. When they did recast for James Heriot's wife, I could never take to Lynda Bellingham somehow, not personally as a actor but they might have put in Jabba the Hut as she didn't reassemble Carol Drinkwater in any way. It was just lady in a terrible wig to me. Best they replace with a unknown actor rather than a 'name'. But they won't. Dawn French anyone?

Sadly, in the US it has become almost impossible to become a veterinarian. The program costs $250,000 for the tuition alone, plus room and board for several years, fees, etc., etc. you have to be rich to afford it. Then when you graduate you need to join a practice where you probably don’t make enough money to pay both your student loans plus rent, car, food, utilities, insurance, cell phone, etc. That’s assuming you don’t also owe a ton of money earning your bachelor’s degree. It’s insane. No wonder vet fees have been getting so very expensive.

I have found the first two episodes to be very true to the original series, but expanded in wonderful ways that budget and newer technologies provide. The scenery is breathtaking, lush and green; practically a character on its own.
The housekeeper's role is as much companion to Siegfried as cook and housekeeper. She has a sixth sense for predicting his moods, and it plays out with wonderful subtlety. She's expert at bending his opinions so he arrives at her desired position on his own.
The animals are very well cast -- the cow in distress is marked in such a way that she's visible in a pasture with the herd. Herriot's interactions with Sigfried''s dog -- usually suspicious of men -- are what win his favor with the staid housekeeper. So much character development occurs without announcement, which beautifully fulfills the screenwriting axiom: "Show it, don't say it."
The first episode reaches back a little further to Harriot's home with his parents on the docks. It's just a few minutes at the top, but enough to tell a little more about Harriot as a person and his relationship with his folks. It's a wonderful way to kick off this redux.

@@ajaugenti1976 -- I was born on Mouldsworth Air Force Base UK, then raised in California. Up until my 20s I was able to fly back-and-forth on military transport. That privilege dried up in the 90s under George Bush Sr., but I've been back a couple of times. London is stupidly expensive now. Gone are the corner curry shops and little tailors where you could get a fab tweed coat custom tailored to your dream specifications for £80 (I still have three of the dozen I picked up over the years, and every time I wear one, people ask where I got it.) There are still Fish/Chips vendors, but my old gut can't handle much of it.
If you ever go (if Americans ever regain admittance abroad), get out of the city. There were tons of farm and ranch B&Bs online. Some even offer horseback or buggy rides around the countryside. Opt for the "family breakfast" or "farmhand breakfast," which is usually around 4am. You'll eat with the workers from mountains of potatoes, sausages, roast beef hash made from yesterday's dinner, and lots of bread, usually white, but home baked. Oh yeah, and a giant can of pork-and-beans that I ate with breakfast once and never again.
A couple of times I chose B&Bs that tempted with "gourmet cook" or "foodie heaven." I preferred the basic, honest, glorious chow at the early breakfasts and worker's dinner. Why go to an English farm for French sauces and Thai-inspired fare?
There was an awesome farm hostel, where you could book a weekend or a month, and became part of the crew. I booked a weekend an screwed-up: I slept in instead of going to the Farmer's Market. So I booked for another weekend and it was fantastic. The hostel was done-in by Mad Cow restrictions and sold to a neighboring production farm.
Sorry, nothing better to do today, than ramble.
Final tip: If you go, plan really well. If you want to see the sights in London (or any major European city), check options. You can wait a couple of hours and pay full price for a ticket to the London Tower, Tate Museum, Pew Gardens or country manor houses, OR you can join a tour group, that often includes transportation, a meal, your ticket into an attraction, and transportation back -- all for less than the price of admission, and with no waiting in line.

@@darkness_of_the_night I agree with all of that and I love the original series.. by 'dated' I mean that it was shot on video tape and had the budget of an average BBC show in the 1970's (which was next to nothing). That won't bring in younger viewers, but this will. Then when you have the new viewers that will most likely give the original series a big boost. Same thing happened with 2005's Doctor Who, once people saw how good the characters and stories were they went back and found the original and breathed new life into it. Personally for me i'd have the same problem if they redid the 'I Claudius' series, the Derek Jacobi series was perfect. The cast was great, but for me the original 1970s (1980s?) series proved unwatchable because they screwed around so much with the plus and the characters compared to the books. I adored the books. The series drove me up a tree precisely because it departed from them so much and I knew them by heart in certain chapters. I realize every TV version has to depart from the original here and there, leave stuff out, of course. I'm talking about changing things there was no reason to change because it wasn't any faster this way, it certainly wasn't any more charming this way, and it truly added nothing at all while in some cases robbing one of my favorite scenes.

@@Dreyno -- Fortunately they didn't try to replicate the original characterization. In the 2020 version, he is much closer to the age of Herriot, as his brother is Herriot's age. There's a bit more of an impossible lunatic quality -- it is made clear he's gone through a parade of possible assistants.
When Harriot makes his way around the tough exterior, the formation of a bond is slow and feels authentic. The housekeeper is a huge upgrade in this version.

Surprisingly good remake of a already good tv show. One of the most popular tv shows on german tv in the 80th.

It is both impossible to imagine this being as good as the original series and impossible to imagine not watching it.

While we all know that nothing will ever come close to being as good as the original All Creatures Great and Small TV show that ran 1978-1990, I'm confident that Masterpiece will do a good job with it, and hopefully bring the world of James Herriot to the attention of a younger audience who may never have heard of it. :)

@@chantalfinn6173 As a child, for few years after I finished reading the books for the first time, I kept re-reading them over and over again, and my parents had a hard time getting me to read anything else. Such great books, and if one doesn't mind the descriptions of surgeries and cows giving birth and whatnot, I think they are just perfect for any animal loving person who isn't keen on silly fluff animal stories and prefers real, heartfelt, and masterfully told stories about animals and their people. They make me laugh too, and they make me cry! And I feel the same about the original show.

I still have my original books plus James Herriot's Yorkshire, the bio his son wrote and another one. I remember first episode I saw on small B/W portable TV while eating dinner alone in kitchen 1977, my husband was in Germany. I paused with fork in air as Herriot's arm went up a cow's bum! To the shoulder!! And no one to say "Did you SEE that?" No DVR back then. Tried to tell people but it was received as TMI from a lonely lunatic. The original will be unbeatable.

@Molly McCullaghDon't think I've seen that one, it was the sequel to the movie with Simon Ward as Herriot-- All Things Bright And Beautiful in U.S. but It Shouldn't Happen To A Vet in UK. But I DO like him in other things especially as Angela's (Julie Walters) dying husband in Calendar Girls!!
