"And every map would've been tens of gigabytes in size" _looks over to Warzone_
Its a sad reality that warzone will never get a new map while verdansk is still in the game. That is the price you pay when the original map is so big and detailed.
@@rikittu It could if the new one used the same assets I'd imagine.
@@rikittu this is the price you pay for poor file management
@@Randarrradara it's deliberate, force people to either buy extra data storage or basically be able to have no other game installed, establishes a monopoly over the device

@@C.A._Old What are you saying?
I never played CSS, but I remember playing rats on 1.6, it was such a fun map with all the random interactive stuff, like the sink killing you, or freezing in the fridge, or getting beaten to death by the mousetrap
The gosh damn mousetrap. Such a tease.
On community servers its easy to die from doors in the fridge 😭😆
Yes it was very big and fun map
Or the burning damage from the kitchen. It was pretty fun.
@@cskiller86 I don't remember, might have even been an awp
I completely forgot about Rats, had a ton of fun on those.
Yeah, I loved them too. Awesome maps
They're still a thing in lots of community servers, just yesterday I played TTT on one.
I used to host a 1.6 server with superhero mod on de_rats. It was very popular, eventhough the gameplay was quite awful since the CT's was pretty much stuck in the fridge from the start, and the whole thing was spammable... And the superhero powers could give you a sort of wallhack.
I missed de_volare
agreed, they had a special feeling, to me in particular the one where you're a bathroom
old counter strike maps feels nostalgic, I remember playing custom cs 1.6 maps like As_Oilrig, De_Japan, and cs_school (not that controversial map, but it has the same name) Those are the best map i've played
As_Oilrig is my childhood bro lol
@@ARC_VR as_oilrig is not a custum map its one of the earliest map on the game

At this point all the videos are just entertaining no matter what he does a video on.
Always were :D
so true
I only have one hundred hours in CS and probably more hours watching he's videos
Whats funny is there is a lot of subscribers doesnt play csgo anymore just like me
I'd say if he made a video about his shit I'd watch it but he already did. One of my favorites :/
The todays community mapping standard makes it super hard to get motivated to learn more.
You have to master everything to compete. Modeling, texturing and mapping itself.
Good, weed out the average makers, promote the best
I get your reasoning but you've got to realise that this applies to everything, why workout if some genetically blessed people naturally have a better physique than you ever will? It is not a race nor is there a price for having the most knowledge of mapping in this case, have fun and I bet you have a creative mind to compensate for any other lacking skills!
Yeah but you can always start, enter low level. Ask for advice and such. You're going to pick up a basketball or baseball and immediately play in the NBA or MLB are you? Even if you are good, things take time and practice, and who knows, you could put yourself out there and learn.
Also there are plenty of maps that aren't professional looking but still play awesomely, like the defenestration maps. Seeing what other people can do actually inspires me to create what I have in my head, because I know it's possible.
@@alexramirobased Sure. And while we're at it, let's tell musicians that if they want to get recognized, they have to play every instrument themselves and handle every aspect of the production. No more getting together with other people and starting bands; everyone has to be a one-man band or we'll write them off as not good enough.
@@stevethepocket, good point, and it applies to every more or less big project, mastering only *one* subject is enough to be desired
Hearing your view on Blahhh, is extremely intrigueing to me.
Everyone I know views abstract maps as a homely place, something that feels cozy and fun to be in. Indeed, so do I.
I don't know how to explain it, but abstract maps are like the source version of theme parks. There's cool stuff to see, there's music, and most importantly, there's fun. CS:GO maps, while visually impressive, never really give me this feeling anymore. (Except of course De_Eclectic, and Nipper's other upcoming CS:GO abstract maps.)
It feels like while most of the mapping community has changed from joking around to serious business, Nipper never did. And I respect him for it.
Nipper is my most favorite mapper of all time, and also, bring func_vehicle back valve.
Sincerely, a guy that plays Counter Strike maps in Garry's Mod.
I have never seen blahhh but it seems like the creator took heavy inspiration from thief 1. there is a level in the game where you break into a mansion that is as abstract as his map.
Highly recommend you check this out as it ticks all those boxes
Easily my favorite mapper too, it's not even close. The perfect word is surreal. The secrets in some, like that one room in zuhhh are distrubing... and intriguing!
TF2 had a similar map creator, I can't remember their name at the moment but they were responsible for trade_abstract and a couple other maps in a similar vein. They are extremely fun to explore.
Blahhhh gahhhh and zuhhhh were some of the coolest maps to me
“Check out Wanda. I remember marveling at this map”
I see what you did there.
They look great to my vision.
The map truly bewitched me.

Nah it's annoying I skipped it
Philip finally getting paid
I don't think this is appreciated enough that Philip puts in captions for each and every one of his videos. Thanks a lot for that and Love you Philip
It's really cool to see that most of these were made by the community. They were made for fun, the quality doesn't really matter.
blahhh is hands down my favourite of these maps. they remind me of a surreal series of levels a friend put together using nothing but royalty-free textures meant for geocities web backgrounds.
...also, you can tell the "wanda" guy was a huge fan of shadow of the colossus
Yeah, the colossus was really well done
he even has his own OC colossi
these maps live on in gmod. I've only seen them in TTT, didn't know they were cs without looking at the filename
Sams! I am pretty sure that I know suburbs from TTT
I love old counter strike maps, hope they introduce some old ones again with some cool new fancy graphics, would love a cool retro event, with some special old school map rotations.
NIPPER is a map creator who I appreciate to my core. While I never got to play his maps online, I did manage to download most of them to play around with on Garry's mod. I'd spend hours just exploring them and enjoy their atmosphere. (Zuhhh is my personal favorite due to it hitting a sweet spot with aesthetics and unique mechanics)
He's also the reason I'm addicted to Lemonhead and Friends Chewy candy because it was in one of his maps. (He actually liked the tweet I said that too, which further validated my addiction)
i havent see blahhh in YEARS, that floating baby head brings back many memories
Ones I remember most from CSS were lost temple, ahoferno, nightfever, desert atrocity, I had no clue if they were good maps or not but did I spend hundreds of hours playing them on my favorite public server. Those were good times but I don't know if now I'd really care for it
I loved night fever and desert atrocity
I still remember playing as a teen on night fever and killing whole teams in the elevator going up and down - and sometimes letting it go without me jn jt
NIPPER's maps are easily some of the most inspiring maps I've ever played.
man this is just full nostalgia. Will you be covering CS mods as well ?
A nostalgia trip through CS server mods and custom models/skins would be so awesome.
i have always wanted csgo to port css mini game servers exactly how they were. they were the staple to cs for me when i was younger and that’s all i played. i never once played a de map, only mg for over 400 hours
@@LinkFevar MG exists in csgo already.
@LT Well that is true of course but sadly the populations of theses modes are dead or dying in CSS and will only continue to decline. CSGO is the future, for better or worse.
CS1.6 had the most mods despite having an older engine. I mean, most of them were added in CSS later on by the community.
An episode about the many cool and innovative zombie escape maps would be really cool.
Oh yes. Death run, zombie mod and zombie escape, same as Surf maps...
My favorite old map when I was a kid is de_survivor, i still remember the sound of the map it was quite scarry i thought back then!
the atmosphere and soundscapes are just too good, pure nostalgia
Survivor has the most incredible ambience/atmosphere out of all official maps for Counter-Strike. The howling wolf, the eagle, the start round sound, the wooden bridge, the black breakable ice floor, the truck, the plane, the small village and the frozen underpass. It had it all.
de_forest just takes me back to Red Forest, that time where i was unable to notice a chimera just few feet away from me behind the bushes
“it felt like the gateway to something greater to myself” is such a nice line, good writing
cs_noir reminding me of when people made "snow" maps in Trials Evolution
I love studying Valve games but you somehow make this ancient game way more interesting that it deserves to be
I love that the Keyboard used in the PC areas of any CS map is the Logitech Cordless Desktop iTouch. The exact one i bought in 2001 and still use today to play with, 20 years later :D
im so glad someone is appreciating nipper's maps, me and my friends have literally played through EVERY single one of his maps through the years, you should see his 1.6 map library if you haven't already, its such a charming and fun experience exploring through them and figuring out all the secrets
i love your videos since that they showcase the archives of such great series of game like Counter-Strike , i had so much fun with this game over the last decade and a half , and seeing such mappers and modders making such AMAZING stuff , is just fully wholesome to me!
Philip you have such a way with your videos, every single one of them bring me nostalgia and a deep humanly happiness I wouldn’t usually feel day to day. I have been watching for many years, even prior to owning csgo, it’s not about cs anymore, I enjoy your content because of who you are and the humanly wholesome nature you put in your videos. Thankyou
When I watch his videos it feels like it's an old friend who I am reminiscing with.
You somehow always manage to make me feel nostalgic about things made before I was born and i have never seen before.
Some of the best gaming memories I have are playing glass_ maps on CS:S, which amounted to not much more than an entire map made of glass blocks and breaking them until one team was left. That game had _solid_ micro communities.
thank you for your uploads, just wanted to say :D
loving the new content
Nipper's maps (and maps others made that are similar to his) are probably some of my absolute favorites in CS:S/1.6, i love that abstract stuff. Cpl_mill is also a favorite even before the door stuck meme. I really liked a lot of CSS and 1.6's custom maps.
This really takes me back. Philip has a penchant for making me feel sadly nostalgic. I'd love to see another video like this but for maps for CS 1.6 and prior versions.
The effort Phillip put in to remake suburbs, a map I’ve never played or heard of until now made me unfairly nostalgic and happy. Thank you, 3kliks.
It's a pretty cool map I've used plenty for private TTT servers on garrysmod, and I was happy to see it be the focal point of this video
@@kidkangaroo5213 I am VenomFang, the guy whose house cs_suburb is based on.

I felt goosebumps, this nostalgia is killing me.
I want to go back.
Makes me feel so old that these maps were made before some of the current players were born haha
A great video documenting the golden age of map making!
Thank you Phillip for this video, those times may be forever gone, but those of us around then remember them fondly and have a shared sort of brotherhood.
Maps that meant something to me: Your physics based minigame maps. Played so much on them.
some maps are older than me
So great seeing all the maps I grew up playing TTT on during jr high. I feel like wanda was a suppressed memory and brought all my source nostalgia out when I saw it again. ty phlip
these types of videos give me chills
Nice video mate, yes i didnt watch the video yet.
I hope one day Valve would bring back some of this maps in Csgo.
Operation throwback
@@bimmer8602 Yes! that would be great, especially for the return of mill.
Depending on how tricky it is recompile and clean up a map for Go you can bring them back yourself. Don't wait for Valve, use the tools they give you to make the best version of CS you can think of!
Wonderful adventure time, thanks Philip!
Thank you for that cool and atmospheric video :)
It's very nostalgic for me, even though I never managed to play Counter Strike Source (and it's custom maps) until few months ago, but I felt the same when playing 1.6 in my early days.
I still remember when I was 5 and played 1.6 at my uncle's. I remember walking around the good looking maps and trying to find easter eggs or new areas to play on, trying to get highscores when playing against bots on cs_assault..
I didn't have internet back then and playing against bots on vanilla maps was all I could do, but I enjoyed it. I didn't have any problem with playing 1.6 all day and I wish I could feel the same today..
Could you do this as a series please? This video was great and I've seen a lot of maps today that I am going to check out in game.
The de_losttemple and de_cpl_mill footage felt like home
Dude, please do more of these types of vids. Even if I can't relate with many of the experience, the nostalgia feeling is contagious. Feels so good to look bakc in time
This kinda makes me want to revisit the old 1.6 or Call of Duty 1 and Call of Duty 2 maps I still remember and hold a special place in my heart.
9:45, god I never played this map back in the day, but I swear I can smell it. Those of you who live/lived in a suburban neighborhood know what's up.
There is something special about the old source maps. Something that makes me brain go "I like how they look"
it's the lighting
Im going to say its the half life 2ish artstyle
Please make more videos like these!
Loved to see old CS maps
Great video! I love this sort of map history :)
I loved playing in Nipper’s maps in 1.6. It was made better especially with vehicles.
FUNC VEHICLE. Nipper is a cool guy and makes the best versatile maps out there.
dude WHAT I didn't know cs_suburbs was a classic map. I've played it so much on PavlovVR WITH Venom but I was under the impression it was something made recently! wow
glad you got to see the pavlov version of the map, very cool!
good video. Loved it. Nostalgia trips such as these are your greatest strength
This is beautiful, a great tribute. Thank you
Seeing some of the maps here made my eyes wet. Those bring back memories of the beautiful and glorious past of all my childhood friends going to a Cyber Cafe or gaming zone to LAN play all the fun maps here.
i miss csgo aztec 😔
me too, they should bring it back, at least for casual
3kliksphilip these type of videos are great, would love to see more of this kind. I was surprised that you didn't include de_calendar from cs 1.6 especially as you are very fond of aztec. It was unique, using cool effects like sun-shafts and other cool techniques to bring the map to life, as this is on the goldsource engine, without props ^^. Really impressive.
The classic 3kliks philip experience with digadig playing in the background! Those videos are the best you make
Watching this gave me a sort of weird nostalgia, especially when you said something along the lines of "The map itself would make all the players on leave their guns and just explore". And then it hit me, back then compared to now, we take these things so much for granted, not even paying much attention, but back then i remember nocliping everywhere for hours... ah well
de_wanda's skybox and coast look a lot like the Azores in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Maybe it was a source of inspiration ?
congrats on 1 mil, you're hands down my favourite youtuber and i'm glad you've made it this far
I remember downloading these maps for Garry's Mod back then. I always enjoyed exploring highly detailed maps with many enterable buildings.

Damn, the memories!!
great video philip, very well put together and very well spoken
we are so lucky to have you on youtube, I really admire you.
"blahhh" feels like something you'd see after taking acid with 20 pills of Benadryl. Had a friend do that once (whom I had to babysit for the whole duration) and the crap he described fits exactly this aesthetic.
i'm still developing my own map, my goal is to make it have simplistic, yet beautiful textures and models, so it runs well and looks good at the same time, cs_italy (the best map in the entire franchise) is what i was drawn to. the props, the textures, and the theme is something that i wanna capture in my own map, just a bit prettier
The Source Engine was magical at the time of its release. It was novel for me to see all those amazing graphics and community made maps combined together. This brought back memories. Thanks philip!
Thanks for bringing back some nostalgia
Pleeeaaaassee make a video about the de_rats maps :D

nippers maps are incredible, and there are so so many of them. used to play them all the time on funmaps servers. it's a shame the pub scene died because people are really missing out on what made counter-strike great.
Where's aim_ak-colt? That was my favorite.
That's a map to train your aim which is not bad tbh.
Congrats on 1 mil!
Top tier quality content (as always), thx Phillip!!!
Thank you for this video! Made me reminiscence playing on a specific server. The owner made maps himself and often they were gimmicky. Some times they had similar levels of detail that I still remember. CS:S custom maps were great!
I renember booting up cs_medridian back in 2012 maybe even earlier on Garry's Mod as a young kid making all kinds of scenes. Its almost like the earliest nostagia of the source engine. Beautiful video as always
As soon as you walked through cpl_mill The A La Menthe started playing in my head.
Great nod to Nipper! He was one of my favorite mappers even back in 1.6. I can't believe you brought up David Firth though lol now I'm gonna have Salad Fingers nightmares...and after all that work with my therapist, too...
Just wow I remember few of these maps like just wow you're the greatest person dude tbh I have no words those old days me playing with bots lol thank you for this nostalgia
I remember, when I created my house for CS:Source, and imaginge some stuff around it to make it playable. And also made a big detailed map, 90% when I accidently deleted the files, and I was only able to recover a file where it was only 10% done...I coulnd't force myself to start it again, and the map only lives in my head :D
Great and fantastic video.
Suburb is a classic! I recently discovered the map in GMod when on a TTT server. It's so wild to me how interesting and real that map feels
Wow of all the things in the video the single moment that made me most nostalgic was when you died on that surf map and that third person camera tracking your ragdolling corpse showed.
Oh my god I've been playing cs_suburbs in Pavlov for the past week and I didn't put it together that it was the same map until now. My mind just blanked it, so many fond memories of that map.
