    Great walk through of the repair and love the introduction of the coolant pressure device. Once again, time is money and why I only use oe or genuine BMW parts. You did everything right, but the cheaper parts are a risk and put you at risk. Hopefully the water pump gives you at least a couple of years. Thanks for the transparency and authenticity of your videos. Please keep them coming.

    50s Kid so glad I took the tune ti watch your video ask we have a slow water leak the leaks more on some days then other to the point its leaking less I’m hoping it fixes it self. The leak being so small has been hard to pin point where it is coming from, you pointed out that the little hose was the cause of the Problem and I think you just found my leak I will start with replacing the Upper hose before I go and replace the resort or tank like I had plan to do. The car has over 150,000 miles and like you we don’t see it as a wise investment to buy OE parts at 3 or 4 times the cost of OEM parts. Keep making these videos for us Shade Tree Concrete Sweeping Mechanics I’ve been able to keep my X3 out of the shops watching you Fix things. Thanks and happy 2021.

    Terrific DIY video, thanks for your attention to detail. Just discovered my '05 X3's water pump is failing and leaking - I can see the pulley actually wobbling while it's running... Pretty sure I can tackle this one - it appears to be a great deal easier to replace than the water pump my '92 Mercedes 190E 2.6 - that was a nightmare - had to pretty much remove the entire front end to get access, and even then I just barely could get to the bolts. Thanks again!

    Hey 50, thanks for another great video. I had this EXACT same problem with this same Rein hose on my e46, it bugged me for weeks. I patched it up with some gasket maker at first but didn't work too well so i bit the bullet and bought the OEM hose, problem solved. I guess Rein dropped the ball at some point for these, definitely one of those times when only OEM will do. Thanks again!

    Jason, great fan of your content. Since you like to research your problems other than just fix them, you need to look into BMWs Achilles heel, its thermostat. The reason why all BMWs leak, plastic deteriorates, components fail is because the engine runs so hot. Thats the reason most other cars dont have the same failures because they run cooler. BMW thermostat temperature range are too high. Figure out how to lower temp and all BMW problems gone. Cooler engine better for high speed. The only time you need it hotter is in city to help with mpg but thats negligent compared to repair costs.

    Possibly the expansion tank was responsible for the upper hose joint leak. Perhaps was changed for an aftermarket part that's not toleranced correctly during design / manufacture.

    Another informative video. Thank you!
    I have encountered the same issues with aftermarket hoses and espescially the expansion tanks. I understand your reasons on this build but I will reiterate your point that OE is the way to go on these critical parts.
    The issue I always encounter is the expansion tank to bottom bracket mount almost always leaks if one part is oe and one isn't.

    hello jason. would it be a good idea to put some dialectric grease/silicone paste on the o-rings of new hoses?
    I would hope that may help with installation and seating the o-rings better.

    50sKid Just want to thank you for making these videos I used your video to rebuild my X3 cooling system had a leak. I could not find the leak after seeing your video showing your leak being the upper small hose on the expansion tank so I bought one and the hoses. I started by replacing the Expansion tank and upper and lower hoses it still leaked so then I went all in and replace the Water pump and Radiator then reinstalled the new expansion tank. After filling the radiator at he big lower hose on the expansion tank was leaking luckily the radiator came with 2 O-rings that turn out to be the same size for the big expansion tank hose that attaches to the expansion tank Mounting bracket, leak stopped now were good to go.
    The only hose I did not replace was the one that goes from the expansion tank to the top of the back of the engine as I cant figure out get to it. Do you have a video on how this hose can be replaced and what is the name of this hose so I can order one. I think it goes to the heater core. Many thanks Ralph C

    I’m pretty sure my thermostat is faulty. Overheating when idling, cranking the heater up lowers the temperature. It sat for a couple months. Going to check levels, bleed the system, and hopefully have a fix. I’m actually kind of excited to replace the water pump. Mine works fines, but it’ll be a fun “preventative maintenance” project.

    Jason, things must be really bad if you're hoping Doorman will save the day haha. My kit has been getting a workout lately too. This time I got lucky, I had the gasket I needed in a kit lol will probably never happen again but it was nice for a change to be able to fix it on the spot and not have to spend money!

      I know, I wasn't happy that was Dorman (if we've all learned anything from Eric O, it's that Dorman sucks!!) but it was my only option! Glad I didn't have to use it though.

    Hey Jason, nice video, I have a question about re installing a new water pump. I understand that the water pump o ring is preventing any leaks once the water pump is installed in the water pump housing. So the questions is: In order to have a stronger seal, could I use grey RTV just in the outer flat edge of the water pump, I mean the edge that is flat and touches the flat edge of the water pump housing? if so, using an small amount of grey RTV can afect the torque specs?, as I see the two surfaces where the RTV is going to be placed are quite flat and the RTV is going to be squished out mostly. I am asking because when you change the thermostat on a e46 video you added RTV to the side of the gasket just to be sure. Could you please clarify me?

    • @seanadams9072
      @seanadams9072 11 месяцев назад

      just a thought to consider. the size of an oring is snug relative to the sealing surfaces and when correct size is correctly fitted then the oring exerts tension against the surfaces it seals against.
      now RTV in its uncured state ,exerts no such tension except for the adhesion of the uncured sealant. once cured however the seal is not mechanical as there is no tension in the RTV sealant so a better fix may be to make an oring out of rtv using any molding material like play dough or plasticine or let the rtv sealant cure before assembling to create the sideways tension seal in the new hard cured rubber. i hope my explanation helps and is understandable

    Does the 2005 X3 have an auxilary water pump or not? What are the symptoms if it's off. The aux pump is used in some of the other model and years. The bleeding process involves engaging the aux pump by turning key to #2 position and supposedly we should hear it and supposedly the water level in the surge tank should go down a little as the aux pump and heater core are filled with coolant... Please advise.

    Better than an inch pound torque wrench is a deci-newton meter one (1/10 of a newton meter) I have a Snap On 1/4 inch drive unit that goes up to 20 Nm (200 on the wrench) and gives you great monitoring of low torque fasteners. I also refuse to buy gyppo aftermarket parts to prevent the exact problems you are experiencing.

    I have an 02 325i and every time I turn my ac on my car wants to overheat please advise as to why.. It only happens with the AC. I changed my thermostat water pump and flushed the cooling system and my ac still causes my car to run hot and with the expaansion tank top off you would think I was boiling water on full blast. The coolant comes gushing out supper hot. But other than that my car runs fine with no problems

    I was just wondering if you help me with coolant warning light issue. The amber warning light comes on and off intermittently from time to time which is driving me mad. I have searched and searched for an answer but there seem to be too many variables.
    My coolant level seems fine in the tank and is at the correct level. There fore there does not seem to be a leak.
    I thought that maybe there was some air trapped in the system but I am unsure of how to bleed this out. Can you perhaps provide some advice for me.

    • @Faith-iy9fw
      @Faith-iy9fw 4 года назад

      oh well after a lot of searching I have resolved my problem. The amber warning light reveals a low coolant level which could, of course, could be caused by many factors such as a leak. After checking my coolant level though on many occasions the level seemed to be fine - at the maximum level.
      What I now discovered though(after much frustration) is that when I ran the car with the heater at the highest level and with the filler cap off, the level dropped off quite a bit - in my case it took about 400ml of coolant to top it up. I inserted a plastic tube into my breather outlet (found this little trick on RUclips) and fed it back into the filler inlet. I topped up and waited for all the bubbles in the system to come up through the clear tube.
      Job done, fault solved. No mess from spillage from breather either. If you have an intermittent amber coolant light come on then I would suggest this to be your first check. Don't check your coolant level cold, check it with the heater on max and the car running.
      Many thanks to 50sKid for all your sharing.
