Excellent how to video. Thanks Bentley for making it available! I had to do this after a scenario where I had a tire replaced under warranty. You can't get away with single tire replacement on these newer AWD cars. It drove around like an old school 4x4 truck with the hubs locked up on dry pavement.

Great overview of the procedure. Was able to complete in 2 hours with the following additional considerations:
    1) Couldn't get the top bolt on the actuator gearcase mount with just the torx socket and a U-joint( the one mentioned as the most difficult). Here's what I did:
    a) Disassemble a 3/8 U-joint by using a drift or a punch to knock out the pins. You want the square pin in the center
    b) place some paper in the socket to prevent the square pin from going all the way into the socket
    c) use the 10mm wrench on the section of the square pin to loosen the bolt (you can turn it out the rest of the way with your hand
    2) Couldn't seem to pry the cover off the gearbox with small screwdrivers, picks, chisels, sharpened screwdrivers
    a) I drilled a small hole in the cover of the plate near the corner - enough for a curved pick to turn sideways
    b) placed the shaft of the pick in a vise, with the gearbox above the vise.
    c) used a prybar to apply upward force to the chassis of the gearbox, away from the mating surface...
    d) I applied heavy grease to seal the hole. I hope it is sufficient
    HTH!

GREAT video. Excellent quality. Professionally done. Only been a day. But so far so good. $1,500 BMW job (Indy estimated $700) for $11.50 (yes decimal is in the right place).
    A few comments:
    - Jacking up transfer case is to makes it easier to remove and install cross member.
    - If removing cross member, remove 18mm bolt first otherwise cross member wobbles around while trying to remove.
    - I couldn't remove 18mm bolt, but was able to pry cross member out of the way.
    - I did not have to remove motor from motor case with T-25 Torx driver.
    - Be careful of the small electrical harness connector when prying off seal cover and tapping it back on. I layed on bench instead of putting into vice. the connector became a little bent and may have loosened connection. So far so good.

Thank you very much for this. I did the repair this morning and this really made it easy. Two issues to bring up are that 1. lowering the transfer case after the brace is loose will make removing the actuator MUCH easier and 2. when removing the motor from the gear assembly, make sure the black plastic housing that hold the electric motor brushes comes with it. It stayed on the gear assembly when I removed it and I had to fish the brushes back onto the motor assembly. Thanks again for the excellent tutorial.

I would add that removing the motor (and brushes) from the gear assembly was not necessary to just swap out the big plastic gear.

Merci

Couple of key points that will help with this: to remove the top star bolts on the servo motor, use an angled socket adapter. This makes life ALOT easier when loosening those bolts. Second: you do not need to separate the motor from the housing on the servomotor, the gear will come out very easily once the clip and metal plate is removed. I actually completed this repair for the second time on my 2007 X3, and will be posting the video shortly. Well done on the video, thank you.

    • @joelbringas612
      @joelbringas612 6 лет назад

yes u r right no need to remove the motor.. a waste of time and safer to just leave it. I did it to my X3 also. I din not replace my gear I just use the other side and works like brand new again. I cleaned and put more and new grease more than they put in before.

Good video, in reality there are some challenges. I just did this: to make your life easier, remove the 13 mm cross member bolts but not the 18 mm - hard to reach. The cross member will flop around enough to allow access. Lower the transfer case a little, makes the top servo motor bolts much easier to access. Use 1/4 inch socket/torx and you'll be okay. The other challenge is removing the housing on the motor itself. Patience is key. Eventually it will come off. When I tried to remove the gear, it wasn't that willing, had to rotate and pull from underneath with a pick; eventually it came apart. Hope this helps!

You don't need to remove the motor assembly from the mounting. And don't forget to clean the inside and put a new grease to lubricate the shaft and the gear. Second the rotation of the motor is not 360 degrees therefore you can still use the old one, just put the good gear side to the shaft and like brand new again.

In this video they show them removing the cross member bolts prior to the 18mm "through bolt". Do yourself a favor and remove the 18mm bolt first *after* supporting the transfer case. You'll find a sweet spot where the weight of the xfer case is supported, but the chassis isn't being lifted. By doing this you won't have the resistance of the cross member's weight or the xfer case pulling up. A wobble ended extension is highly recommended.

Steps differ if front wheels are elevated by ramps. Place auto scissors jack under transfer case, remove 4 bolts holding up transfer case bracket to floor. The 5th bolt, the bushing through-bolt on some models (2006 X3 3.0i) is obscured by exhaust pipes so a 3/8" drive, universal socket adaptor is require to loosen it because an 18mm open-ended wrench won't fit in the space. Once removed, the jack under the transfer case must be lowered. It needs to be lowered as the two top E10 Torx bolts attaching the servomotor to the transfer case are situated up in the transmission tunnel with limited space. The electrical plugs to the servo motor do not detach as easily as shown in the video. Clean out debris in the actuator housing and apply new grease to the actuator gear.

This video is great and the fix isn't that hard if you aren't scared of dropping the cross member. This parts list is not very good though. I didn't need a 10mm for anything, no 18mm was used for anything. T-25 was accurate in the video but not listed in the parts list in the earlier part of the video. Removing circlet was the toughest part. Clean the junk out when you are replacing the gear since you have it open too. Thanks again for the video!

Vaughn Olson Hi Vaughn, Thanks for the note. The 18mm wrench/socket is for removing the crossmember rubber bushing through bolt. Removing the through bolt allows the crossmember to be dropped lower. Gives a little more access to an already tight area. Did you not remove the through bolt? Let us know if you have other videos topics you'd like to see. Thanks!

    • @vaughnolson9743
      @vaughnolson9743 9 лет назад

I did not remove the through bolt as there was enough room (for me) just undoing the 13 mm and moving the crossmember around worked for me. Thanks again for the video, saved a lot of money!

I have this vehicle model, I mention that the car has a 2.0 diesel engine, automatic transmission and I have some questions:
    1. When should the distribution be changed !? The distribution is on the chain, the engine code is N47? Km?
    2. When is it advisable to replace the gearbox oil? Km?
    3. When should I expect to change the particle filter? Km, approx.
    4. When can the first problems with EGR occur? Estimated km.

Question: this problem also occurs on older Mercedes G500s, but it’s worse because if the gear does not cycle, the computer won’t start the car. Unlike the X3, a replacement gear was not available, so the fix was was to remove the gear, rotate it 180 degrees, and reinstall it. The bad teeth were the only the unused side. Will that work on the X3 for a quick field repair?

    Hey.. I have a BMW X5 2006 3.0 .
Mechanics did a scan and still are clueless!
    Codes say 227 & 228
    ( o2 bank 2 control deviation and o2 bank 1 control deviation.. )
Also I have 4x4 DSC Inactive light on suddenly! and I hear grinding noise underneath at hard stops like down a hill...
(NO ABS lights on/NO break lights on/NO clicking noise... Only 4x4 lights on after 1 min of starting to drive and DSC Inactive ding on dash! )
I assume Transfer Case Motor or Gear ??? Or oil ???...It feels like brake locks on when I stop down a hill..
    What could it be???
    Also...
My check engine light has Always been on for 3 years ( Map Thermostat code) but every mechanic told me not to bother replacing that part...
Recently The car has trouble starting every morning and when low on fuel. !!
Cranks but No start for at least 5 cranks...
    *Maybe Fuel pump Relay??
    *Fuel pressure regulator??
    *Fuel filter??
    *Fuel Injectors ??
    They cant figure it out!!!
Seems the Fuel Pump is working..
I Went to over 20 car shops in 3 weeks and am really frustrated :(
What could it be ??? They cant figure it out !!!

This video struggles to show how to install back the metal plate supporting the transfer case. tbh that was the hardest part. You must you a jack stand or in my case i used the scissor jack to lift up the transfer case so that the 13mm bolts will reach. Its a pain in the ass imo and takes time. Also taking out the c ring inside the actuator was tough, I used small pliers to open it up and with another tool I pulled it out. If anyone has questions lmk, i think FCP euro video is better as he goes into more details.

    Hi,
I'm having the same problem with my 07-525xi E60, I replaced the transfer case actuator motor and the abs, DSC and awd seem to work, but the 4x4 and dsc warning lights are still on, the car drives ok, but if I push the gas it starts to jerk/shake and engine light comes on until I restart the engine again, with Autel al419 scanning tool I only have a cyl6 misfire, but the engine runs good unless, like I said, I push on the gas, other than that I don't see any other faulty code for the transfer case, and even if I reset the codes the 4x4 and dsc light still on. Please help, do I need to re-code, re-program the resistor, ECM or something? Can I do that myself, or Where can I do that if that's the case, I live in Toronto Canada.

    Nice video, very clear.
My sons 2007 X3 has just the 4X4 light on. It happened immediately after I replaced the spark plugs and the engine air filter. Initially, three lights came on - 4X4, ABS and Brake. The other two went out after a few hours but the 4X4 light remains on, about 2 months now. It won't reset by using a scan tool, or turning the steering wheel lock to lock. I don't get the clicking noise when the car is turned off. My iCarsoft scan tool says it is "5F3A Transfer case: malfunction".
I could just try replacing the transfer case, or just the gear, but does anyone think that I could have dislodged any electrical wiring or something else while doing the service work on the car? It seems like an odd coincidence that this problem occurred as soon as I replaced the plugs and the air filter.

@@cs3943 On my 2007 it turned out to be the speed senor right rear. CODE 581D on my friends 5k snap-on code reader. My ghetto harbor freight reader cannot pick this code up. This was after I bought the replacement gear, struggled to get the actuator off the car and opened only to find the factory gear in perfect shape. Changed out the sensors both in the rear and all good now.

I replaced actuator gear (2005 X3 3.0. 95,000 mi) and it fixed problem with dash lights. Been several months. I recently got a flat, and put a quality used tire on right rear (same size, different maker). It is maybe 2 mm higher than other tires. Almost immediately the lights came back on. I also see that the garage didn't put the tire pressure sensor back on that tire (not sure if that would have anything to do with it??). Seems strange that a tire that close to the others would cause lights to come on within 50 miles. I mean, what happens when you put the spare on or when a tire is somewhat lower in air than the others? Is it going to burn that gear out again? I mean it's a $2000 job at BMW. Any ideas, while I park truck??? thanks, great clear video!!

    • @RyRch

These cars are extremely sensitive to different tyres. All tyres be the same brand and model and same wear. It's the biggest cause of drive issues. In fact, most X3 driveline issues are solved by getting new tyres all round.

Check the wheel speed sensors with a scanner while driving...if it shows one has a speed that’s inconsistent you probably have to repair it...or in some cases it’s not the sensor but the reluctor ring on the cv shaft itself (that was my issue) good luck

That little gear is an exceptionally robust chunk of material. And with proper maintenance, there's no reason it can't last the life of the vehicle. Transfer case oil renewal and an xDrive (VTG) adaption reset can make it last even longer ruclips.net/video/sml5ewz0HzA/видео.html. In my vehicle's case, the transfer case oil change was over due. Glad to find out I had a more economical solution other than replacing the servomotor. In my opinion, the E83 X3 is a surprisingly well built vehicle, including the XDrive transfer case.

So Charlie, you had the same issue with the lights on your dash? I have the same issue but I hear no clicking at all. Is this an indicator to change only the transfer case oil? How did you decide it only needed the oil to be changed?

    • @charlieburke6367
      @charlieburke6367 9 лет назад

      Vito Orona
Vito, a fault code will be set when the oil needs to be changed, but this fault code will not turn on any dash warning lights. The oil wear fault code is set when the clutch plates wear (travel to engage the clutch is too great). You'll need a bmw scan tool to see if you have a transfer case oil wear fault. If your truck is not making the clicking sound, I would first find out what fault codes are behind the warning lights. Let me know what you discover.
