  • This video goes over the steps I took to bleed the coolant system in our X3. This is the same procedure for other models as well with an inline 6 and electric water pump. Enjoy! This car has 109k miles and all the coolant system parts were original, however, the water pump and thermostat were replaced about 1000 miles ago.

Venting cooling system and checking for leaks (N52)
    Warning!
    Danger of scalding!
Open sealing cap only after engine has cooled down.
    Wear protective gloves and goggles.
    Important!
Follow instructions for working on cooling system.
    Electric coolant pump!
Observe special venting procedure after replacing engine or heating cooler.
    Only when refilling!
    Use only recommended coolant.
    Observe mixture ratio.
    Perform filling operation slowly.
    Adjust coolant level to MAX.

    Maximum cold fill level:
    • Top edge of coolant expansion tank is level with marking (2).
    Important!
The following venting procedure is necessary e.g. when a part is replaced in the cooling system or when the cooling system is refilled.
    Only when venting!
Open cap (1) on coolant expansion tank.
    Open vent screw (2).
    Important!
Fill coolant expansion tank up to lower edge of filler neck with recommended coolant.
    Pour in coolant slowly.
Close vent screw (2) when bubble-free coolant emerges
    Close cap on expansion tank.
Do not open the coolant expansion tank cap during the venting procedure.

    1. Connect battery charger.
    2. Switch on ignition.
    3. Set heater to maximum temperature, activate ”Automatic” button, then reduce fan to lowest setting.
    4. Press accelerator pedal for 10 seconds to floor. Engine must not be started.
    5. The venting procedure is started when the accelerator pedal is pressed and takes approx. 12 minutes.
    6. Check cooling system for leaks.
    7. If the venting procedure has to be carried out several times, allow DME to drop completely (ignition key removed for approx. 3 minutes), then repeat from Point 3.
    Checking coolant level:
    Important!
Check coolant level at a maximum coolant temperature of 30 °C.
If ambient temperature is above 30 °C, allow engine to cool down at least to ambient temperature.
    Open cap carefully.
Fluid level is OK when top edge of coolant expansion tank lies between both markings (1 and 2) on float needle.
    Minimum cold fill level:
    • Top edge of coolant expansion tank is level with marking (1).
    Maximum cold fill level:
    • Top edge of coolant expansion tank is level with marking (2).
    If necessary, top up coolant.
    Close cap on expansion tank.

    Important!
Observe the following special venting procedure after replacing the engine or heating cooler.
    Venting cooling system:
Open cap (1) on coolant expansion tank.
    Open vent screw (2).
    Important!
Fill coolant expansion tank up to lower edge of filler neck with recommended coolant.
    Pour in coolant slowly.
Close vent screw (2) when bubble-free coolant emerges
    1. Connect battery charger.
    2. Switch on ignition.Engine must not be started!
    3. Connect DIS Tester.
    4. Cover expansion tank opening with a suitable fluff-free cloth.
This prevents the engine compartment from being fouled by coolant splashes and contaminants from entering the cooling system.
    5. Activate electric coolant pump at 95 % by means of DIS Tester.
    o DME brief test
    o Control unit functions
    o Component activation
    o Coolant pump 95 %
The coolant pump is activated by the DIS Tester and switches off automatically.
    6. Pour coolant into expansion tank up to max. cold fill level.
    7. Repeat steps 4 to 6 until the coolant level in the expansion tank when compared with the last replenishment level (max. cold fill level) no longer drops when the electric coolant pump is activated.
    8. Close cap on expansion tank.
    Note:
    Check cooling system for leaks.
    Checking coolant level:
    Important!
Check coolant level at a maximum coolant temperature of 30 °C.
If ambient temperature is above 30 °C, allow engine to cool down at least to ambient temperature.

you said two things that contradict each other
      Only when venting!
Open cap (1) on coolant expansion tank.
      Open vent screw (2).
      then you said
Do not open the coolant expansion tank cap during the venting procedure.
      i am slightly confused thanks

    • @michaelchitty1728
      @michaelchitty1728  2 года назад

@@jt8932 Basically, you fill the expansion tank to full, then put the cap back on, and let the air vent through the bleed screw (air should not vent through the cap). Let me know if that helps.

U have to remove the bleeder screw when evacuating the system. the air has to escape , it's a sealed system..
if not, your just moving the air around..

Sorry about the music, you can hear the pump when it's running although it's not all that loud.

Thx for the video. I recently had my water pump replaced. On my way home the coolant light came on. It was a local mechanic so not sure if he was familiar with the X3 bleeding process. Ive tried it twice and added quite a bit of fluid. Light still comes on. I didn’t know to do the gas pedal...does it matter that much?

    • @michaelchitty1728
      @michaelchitty1728  5 лет назад +1

Hi, yes the gas pedal is what triggers the bleed routine. It's important to do all the steps in the right order and to have a charger connected so the water pump has the correct voltage.

So, you don't take the bleeder screw out again after your first initial fill? You didn't really specify... Thanks.

Hi, yes, you do need to open the bleeder screw, but not during the venting procedure. Sorry, it's been a while since i did this :) I will post the instructions in the comments.

@@michaelchitty1728 No prob, and it was not intended to insult or offend your video at all. I've worked on German cars for years, they are mostly over engineered but at the same time very simple to repair once you get into them..

Ok...so I’m getting really frustrated here 🧐. I have replaced the expansion tank and its thermostat, tension assembly, belt, alternator, oil housing gasket, oil cooler gasket, and valve cover gasket. I have personally done myself. So...I’m not sure what I’m missing here.
