      @@LeoKRogue Would you agree that the Unity parkour system will work well in a AC1 remake is done?

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  5 лет назад +52

      I'm not sure. I think, starting with Unity, they really took away a lot of our control and made things much more contextual and simple. So, if they did that again for an AC1 Remake, it would really disappoint me. If they kept the number of unique actions that could be done from AC1-Rev, but paired them with the shiny animations from Unity, though, that'd probably be the best that movement will ever be.

    This, I feel, was the essence of the Assassin's Creed. Truth be told, I was interested in AC games as long as they promised the Juno-related Infinity War-type-thing happening...No point for me playing the newer games but I digress. The older games were constantly challenging your mind. Not the challenges of survival like some Dark Souls-type games have, but the challenges of mastery and perfection of your skills. The way you move through the city, the way you fight, the way you assassinate... Everything was a puzzle. You could be as effective as you want to be, always aware of your surroundings whether there are annoying peasants on the street, some tricky free-run/climbing structures or vigilant guards... An assassin always finds a way to use these surroundings to his favor.
    Later though, when almost every action became automated...It just started to feel like you're just an observer. You just point the direction.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  5 лет назад +62

      "You could be as effective as you want to be," is really what it comes down to. In the newer games, this philosophy essentially changes to, "You will be as effective as we tell you to be." Assassin's Creed used to be about seizing Freedom from a system of oppression, and this manifested both in the story AND in gameplay. Players were truly Free, but this Freedom was terrifying to achieve if you didn't know what you were doing. You had to really push yourself, and attempt things that could cause you to Desynchronize or take damage. If you had the will and the knowledge, you could do it. Players would teach each other, propagate knowledge, give each other little hints and guides and tutorials, making each other stronger -- making the Brotherhood stronger. I miss that feeling.

    I know this video is 3 years old but I just discovered it as aI'm replaying these old AC's, so thank you, it's really useful!
    A couple of missed things I'd add:
    - When you're sprinting and release high profile in the ezio saga while you are passing next to npc's so you don't tumble to the ground, you have the risk of robbing them and some guards might see you and get annoyed. Or sometimes you want to do a sudden stop in that group of people to become stealth but release the button too late, you rob one of those people and the group disassembles, ruining your cover
    - If you are climbing or on a roof and you time the high profile and empty hand buttons badly you will perform a jump and land on an npc, which can not only take you out of your desired course but also make guards instantly notice you and get aggressive, which is awful if you were trying to escape from someone else lol

      @@LeoKRogue Yes, sorry if I sounded a bit arrogant or a know-it-all ! But it pains me that so many people do not get to appreciate the depth of AC parkour mechanics. That's what made the game so enjoyable when I started playing them in 2007

      You sounded like nothing of the sort, I relate 100%. Consider what we're left with now. No advanced movement tech of any kind. What defines success or failure is the 50 hours before we engage into a situation (Gear, XP) not our behavior within the actual situation itself (decision-making, skill). It's aggravating and a clear step down.

      A common sentiment among players who've stuck with the franchise from the beginning all the way up until now. Not to mention that Odyssey uses various methods to artificially extend its playtime which are... Quite exhausting. I think that's the most frequently mentioned experience among players who were just looking for a tight, enjoyable game. Exhausting. There's not only a lot to do, you *have* to do a huge amount of it just to be permitted to progress. I can hate Odyssey without hating the players who love it, as long as they extend me the same courtesy. A lot of them haven't, so I've ripped on those people. It's no one in *MY* comments sections, mostly folks on Reddit, but y'know. It's a thing.

    Man, I had forgotten about all this. I remember playing Assassin's Creed for the first time, slowly learning these techniques through (lots of) trial and error. From starting out sprinting everywhere and jumping off everything, every little thing you learned was a mini lightbulb moment, and it made you feel like a real badass when you felt you mastered a new technique. Simplifying the movement system, like they've done, really sacrifices this feeling of achievement, even if it does make the game more "accessible" in the short term.
    Thanks for the nostalgia trip, Leo. Best part about Classic AC movement is, even after all these years, thinking I mastered these games, I watch this video, and I see some stuff that I've never really tried before. I think I'm going to buy these games on PC so I can enjoy them all over again.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  5 лет назад +7

      That's a pretty solid way of describing the incredible sensation of slowly increasing our Sync with these ancient guardians of free will, yup. It's a hundred tiny moments that add up to a singular realization, and the cycle repeats until you 'click' into the next discovery. What's more, simplifying the movement system doesn't just degrade the feeling of growth, it also just guts any sense of individuality or player-expression. My movement in AC1-Rev looks very different to the movement of certain other players. My movement in AC Odyssey is exactly the same as everyone else's. There's nothing to set each other apart or express our own unique style.
      I very much recommend grabbing your favorites on PC and playing them again. Assassin's Creed at 60fps is an incredible feeling.

    This is one of the most analytical and well thought over pieces of video game content I've ever seen Speaking as someone in the competitive fighting game community it's the highest compliment I can give to tell you that you think about this game As if it's a multiplayer game and you have something to lose if you don't know every little mechanic at your disposal for this you earned my respect.
    Edit this comment was made when I was about nine minutes into the video and immediately after resuming the video you immediately compared execution in ac to fighting games I love you and have now subscribed

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 года назад +10

      Thanks Payton! This is a pleasant surprise, because I'm actually shocked someone feels this way.
      The reason is the following: if you look at my Rogue Academy - AC Unity Advanced Guide, I get _so many_ comments being like "PFFT how can someone be bad at a single-player game?" "Why would you need a mechanics-guide for this game when there's no multiplayer?" As if people don't grasp there's innate pleasure to getting _better_ at something you already enjoy, and perhaps lots of players might wish to do so. You can imagine this is kind of irritating to see, especially for people like you and me.
      But yeah, this is the way I've been accustomed to looking at games, and I kind of bring it to everything.
      There's always a reason to try to learn more and figure out all the 'tech' we have access to, in anything. It's just a nice, enjoyable mindset that can raise the fun to be had in pretty much anything we apply it to.

    Just started playing OG AC lately and my god, Catch Ledge was so godly. I hope Valhalla has a mix of Catch Ledge and Parkour Down. And I thought the "Side Ejects" in Unity were fun, going back to old AC, feeling the freedom of True Side Ejects in that has made navigation so much more fun, especially since I'm playing without the minimap (and HUD altogether).
    Thanks for all your videos, Leo, they played a big part in me getting back into this series last year around Christmas time. Before then, I avoided Assassin's Creed like the plague because of feeling underwhelmed from, and betrayed by, the modern day ending to ACIII. I even went so far as to buy into every negative thing said about every game after Unity just to reaffirm how right my choice is to be done with the AC franchise.
    But as of this comment, for the past 7 months, I have had a damn good time with Unity, Odyssey, AC1, and KIND OF a good time with Syndicate. It bores me now, but I will always respect it for being the first game I played after an 8 year abstinence from the series. Now I'm revisiting AC2 and love how much grander the modern story gets at this point in the series, along with how engrossing Ezio's character is right off the bat.
    Just wanted to express that this morning because I woke up excited to jump right back into AC2 after a late night playing the crap out of it. I just beat AC1 yesterday and it felt like such a chore to look and play past the jank, all for the sake of enjoying the story. Moving on to AC2 and experiencing (on what my imho is) the best AC game reminded me of how much AC captured my imagination and philosophical intrigue a decade ago.
    So thanks so much for what you do.

When I play with a controller, it's kind of hard to hold both high profile button and action button while controlling the camera with the right stick, it actually makes sense intuitively to release the high profile button for most of the time; whereas it's relatively easy to hold multiple keys/buttons and control the camera with a mouse with MnK. Anyway I tend to unconsciously perform more high profile actions while playing with MnK, especially for sprinting.

    Assassin’s Creed started much more in the vein of cinematic platformers like Another World, Flashback or Prince of Persia (which makes a ton more sense when you find out that AC started development as a PoP spinoff). I love those types of games so I had a great time playing the classic AC games and felt right at home with these concepts. I feel like many people would call those games stiff or sticky or imprecise, too, when of course they’re the exact opposite-too modular and precise for most players. A cinematic platformer really asks you to use the whole moveset (even the slow stuff), not just run full tilt at all times. It’s so satisfying to get good enough at the controls that you achieve that beautiful, smooth flow. AC is a really beautiful and (all things considered) intuitive translation of cinematic platformers from 2d to 3d. I do like the addition of Run Down to the moveset in later games but I agree that there’s so much more precise control in the older AC games and I miss that. I wish some indie dev would take a real shot at a game with parkour controls like this, even if they couldn’t quite achieve the same visual fidelity. I’d take a PS1 graphics version of AC’s parkour gameplay.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 дня назад +1

      Yeah, I think Sands of Time, and then later AC1-Rev really represent that middle ground between, the super animation-heavy (some may say unresponsive but visually sublime) vibes of those classics, and more "modern," snappy action game movement. It creates a feeling that is so unique. Would love to see more exploration of these kinds of mechanics and as you say, it could be anyone doing it.

    • @animatrix1490
      @animatrix1490 4 дня назад

      @@LeoKRogue Now that you’ve mentioned“modern action games,” it made me think about how much it changed the scene when a different game came out that focused on slower, more animation-heavy, but precise action and controls: Dark Souls. It also forces you to have button discipline and precise input to keep yourself in the fight without giving enemies too much of an opening. I wonder if it could be argued that what DS1 was to action game combat, AC1 already was to action game platforming. Plus you see a similar pattern of imitators afterwards-parkour/climbing elements or at least vaguely similar movement systems started to show up in tons of action games after AC1 (Sleeping Dogs, Uncharted, and even later stuff like Breath of the Wild), much like stamina bars, dodge rolls, death retrieval mechanics, and renewable health-recovery items (Estus flasks) have shown up even in games that might not be considered souls-likes. Idk what you do for a living, but I seriously believe you could find a great deal of people that want a game with an older AC style traversal system, even if it doesn't have a studio or budget as big as Ubisoft (maybe asking for donations could work, as this type of game wouldn't depend on setting up high expectations based on almost impossible promises, but grounded mechanics). What made the parkour great in the older games was the agency it gave the player. Also, Venice in AC2 is the best: every area is unique and requires different parkour skills for transversal.
    This is controversial, but AC brotherhood marks the point of AC games going downhill, and their fall started with the combat. The parkour from AC 3 to valhalla resembles the chain kills in AC brotherhood: its easier. Both parkour and fighting has been dumbed down to satisfy less disciplined players. While fighting has improved in the new RPG styled AC games, i miss the challenge of seemlessly fighting in AC1 and AC2.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  3 года назад +6

      Cheers! It devastates me the direction parkour has gone in, in Assassin's Creed. It used to be *the* signature system behind these games. When players thought "Assassin's Creed," they thought "parkour."
      That said, I'd like to stress that Brotherhood combat was actually the closest to oldskool Parkour that fighting ever actually _got,_ because it operated on the same principles; you _could_ play it reasonably automatically and go 'easy-mode,' not expressing yourself via the mechanics available, but there was enough variety and expression there for advanced players to put their own spin on it and play even faster, even flashier.
      What I deeply disliked about it was that we had all this power without any consideration or cost behind it.
      Brotherhood/Revelations Ezio has an _unfathomably_ large health pool but he can still dispatch an enemy in one hit as long as you keep your flow up. It just doesn't feel right, we should be very fragile if we have such immense lethality, and that would've been perfect for me, as a fight-system. Not even necessarily 'fighting,' just outright Killing at any given time, whether in stealth or combat, is very emblematic of a capital-A Assassin and it's kind of a shame that they went with the system they did nowadays.
      For an example of a recent game that actually pulls off what I want reasonably well, that'd be Ghost of Tsushima on Lethal difficulty. Enemies die incredibly quickly, in one or two hits, tops, but the player can barely take a scratch without being put down themselves. It's brilliant because it makes you feel deadly without permitting complacency. You actually have to be alert and engaged.

    Hi,
    Not sure if you'll read this, but I just discovered the Assassin's Creed franchise. In 2020. I started playing the first one and fell in love immediately. I'm on memory block 5 at the moment. I always thought that Altair's stuttering movement, and the issue of not being able to grab certain ledges was just a limitation of the time. I'm gonna try some of these moves next chance I get. I'm not sure where I was going with this but I just wanted to gush about how much I love AC1.

    • @LeoKRogue

      Thank you so much Mintdragon. ^__^
      Assassin's Creed 1 is my favorite game ever made. I'm really happy you started with it, because that's really important. It will give you all the skills you need, to properly enjoy ALL of the subsequent ones. I've known a lot of people who DIDN'T start with AC1 first, and ended up having a worse experience because of it later.

    • @mintdragon5382
      @mintdragon5382 4 года назад +1

      @@LeoKRogue I can definitely see why it's your favourite. It's quickly becoming mine as well. The sound design, the atmosphere, the way the game drip feeds you bits of the plot, how both Altair and Desmond aren't ever really safe. There were two major moments where I went "oh my god I love this game"; when Altair walked next to a person and turned his body to face them, and at the beginning of the game, when the game looks like it's glitching but it's actually a secret plot that I had no idea about. Sorry for the ramble, I'm just so in love with this game, and I hope the other ones are good, too.
      Usually when I start playing a series, I tend to start from the first game. I played Jak 2 when I was a kid without playing the first one and I had such a bad time that I put it away until I got the first one.

      Leo K [Rogue] It is an amazing feeling! I was introduced to your channel from several of your Unity videos, which greatly increased my enjoyment of it. The way you make Unity look keeps inspiring me to pick it up again lol. The classic ones are less flashy, but it is really satisfying having pretty much complete control and knowing that it was *you* that did something cool, and a little less frustrating when you realize it was you that messed something up. There’s always some jank but that’s the nature of the beast. Again, thanks for doing what you do, you’ve succeeded in taking my Assassins Creed experience to a whole new level. :)

      I was really frustrated with the parkour system too! My biggest problems are direction control button discipline. Like sometimes I must control the direction very precisely, but other times I just have to hold X + R2 + left stick forward and the assassin will adjust the direction automatically. This has caused me troubles a lot. I’m excited to try this cause too many times I lose health due to parkour rather than fighting. In fact I think that the combat system in Ezio collection (I have not played the last one yet) is way too easy. This is especially true with the introduction of one-button streak kill in brotherhood. Fighting got so boring that there was a time when I just took on like 7 soldiers with my fist without disarming them.

    something i love in ac1 is that Altair can foot-plant off a handhold on the side of a wall momentarily if you tap the legs button again and he will keep going forward, if you dont tap legs again thought he steps on the hand hold on the wall and then falls down since he can actually fully stand on it. its kinda a sudo wall run from prince of Persia and i believe thats only really in ac1 so that shows some of its prince of Persia root/blood which is really cool. the more I've been playing AC1 the more I think it has the best parkour system of all the games and how it just is never properly presented to the player. AC1 is a hidden gem far ahead of its time that I feel had a system that never got the evolution it really deserved.

Wallrunning and then jumping upwards looks amazing and it's a very good technique, I even thought to myself that it's kinda realistic but hard to execute at the same in real life. Tell me if I'm wrong, I just think it's kinda realistic XD

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 года назад +2

      It can be fairly realistic, yeah. It would look slightly different when done in real life because of how our back-muscles and our arms work, but it'd be similar enough to feel familiar. You can watch some similar stuff if you search for "Parkour, Literally" on RUclips. The first video should be good enough.

      Indeed. Unity does have Side-Hops, which are still super useful when identified and practiced, but I definitely miss having more control of my movements. At this point, adding _any_ kind of extra depth and variance to movement would be really cool, whatever it ends up taking the form of.

    Love the Altair/Ezio controls! Glad I followed the link, it was a fun watch. :)
    Another thing I picked up on after replays that's a really gratifying detail is that whether or not you're pressing the analog stick in the direction of your jump arc is the difference between Ezio landing hard with a groan and him rolling safely to his feet to keep running. I don't remember off the top of my head whether he takes more damage if he doesn't roll (I vaguely recall that he does, and suspect this was my initial motivation to start consciously doing rolls), but it certainly looks way more competent in either case. And it boosts immersion! You'd want to avoid rigid landings as much as possible if you had real-life joint health to consider, and upon discovering this mechanic, you slowly start caring about Ezio's joints too. Simple, but effective mechanic for feeling part of the game. And just like the rest of the controls, the response is instant! It doesn't matter if I realize I'm about to crash without being able to grab anything only at the very last moment. If I hurriedly jam the stick forward with only a split second to spare, he'll still roll!
    Teeny tiny detail but very welcome in how much it contributes to the feeling of conscious and custom control over the character's actions. :)

      I'm glad to help! You can alternate between jogging (basically just high profile) and then dropping back down into a walk when you get near other people in the streets. Much like slowing down to play "clean" around edges on rooftops, you can definitely "greed" for movement-speed on both roofs and streets as long as you practice easing off when you get close to something sensitive -- like a person / wall / edge.

      @@LeoKRogue it was a while ago since I played unity but I honestly remember the parkour as better than AC2 which I'm playing now.
