  • A traditional burn pile releases a ton of stored carbon back into the atmosphere and leaves you with nothing but a pile of ash. Instead, make biochar! Today I'm using a custom designed biochar kiln to transform unwanted brush into black gold that's great in the garden and good for the environment.
Have you made biochar before? Would you use a kiln like this for your next burn? What do you do with your finished biochar? Let me know in the comments below!

I didn't design this kiln so I don't know the exact angle, but it looks to be around 45 degrees give or take.

    Advice on building one?

This biochar kiln isn't exactly a diy setup unfortunately since it was custom fabricated and welded from sheet metal. If you've got the welding skills though, by all means! Alternatively an empty steel drum could be fashioned into a biochar kiln- there are a few different methods floating around RUclips. I'll add a DIY version to my list of projects.

Biochar IS a type of charcoal, but the term specifically applies to an end product used for soil amendment or other agricultural purposes. The term charcoal typically refers to something used primarily for heating and cooking.
