Bake the shells at 350-400 for an hour or so. Basically disintegrates the membrane and breaks down the natural waxes in the shell, which should also allow the dye to penetrate deeper. Was told about that by a guy who created small carved shell nightlights.
Ive made eggshell art pieces before, my method of choice was placing them into bleach, bleach will eat the membrane away, but the outer shell will be untouched. Leave it to dry out and no smell, nothing. Placing them into oven may cause brown spots and weird smell if you dont seal it later. By the way, you can use wood glue to glue them, if you glue a glass surface, place a big chunk on and crush it onto the surface, it will create smaller cracked pieces on it, after a little mosaic work, it will create interesting lamp shades and candle holders.

The vinegar is slowly dissolving the egg, basically etching it. The dye attaches to the etched surface really well, that's why it only sticks to the surface instead of going through the whole thing. When I was in middle school we had a science project where we just dropped an egg into a beaker full of vinegar and left it for like a week, after which point it was just the inner squishy bits left over.
Not sure if you had any leftover shells, or if you saved them, but I think a neat idea would be a spatula handle, with different colored shells, so you can flip your eggs, with shells

Cool side note, I have a breed of chickens called Easter Eggers ( technically a mix of Americana and aurucauna) but they lay blue/green shelled eggs. The cool part of that is these eggs have fully blue shells, unlike brown eggs where the brown is a layer added just to the outside
I grew up with those kinds of chickiens. I thought of them immediately when he started doing this. I think they would look really cool in a bracelet like this.

That's what I was thinking too! As pretty as the faces of the shells are, I think I like the edges with a little bit of blue face in between better! It'd be really cool if someone could do this but do it on a flat plane and select them individually to make some kind of painting, like the Japanese wave thing, but in shells 😄

Every time I see you spray mold release I wonder if dry shampoo (which is basically spray baby powder) would work the same. Maybe something to try for the next Dye Trying segment.
Very cool project! You should do this again but don't dye the egg shells after removing the membrane. I think having a dyed side (maybe black or another strong color) and a plain white inside could be a cool effect.
the micro mesh part is honestly kind of therapeutic. i love the shine it gives items, and when you explain it it's kind of like a little ritual. Ah, yes, the micro mesh tantra. we are now entering zen.
Peter, once again, absolutely stunning. The depth of color offset by sharp white contrast is gorgeous. It had me thinking it would be incredible if you made it as a thin panel/veneer for a box lid or used different colors for a stained glass/marquetry. A tip. You can peel a good chunk of the membrane right after you crack the egg open. You won't get it all, but should get 50-75% and it's easy enough you can throw the rest out and just eat more eggs.

Ive always found that its easiest yo remove the egg shell membrane when you wash out the eggs while they are still large. Once you start to break them into smaller pieces it gets really difficult to get it all. Best of luck next time! ❤

I've like alot of your projects, but this, to me, is one of the most beautiful resin inclusions you've done. I want to make something with resin and dyed eggshells now. My trouble is I have almost none of the necessary things. I do have eggs!
I don't know why, but when I saw the blue eggshell pieces, the first thought in my head was 'alien cornflakes'. Like that would be something an alien or spaceman would have for breakfast in a sci-fi movie. Edit: The combination of resin ribbons and eggshell dust coming off the piece is a really neat visual effect!

I LOVE this project! It’s exactly the sort of thing that shows off the capabilities of resin in a fascinating and aesthetically pleasing way! Plus, it’s made from garbage, which is always great!
Personally I'd take that gold leaf blank and mace a fountain pen with it, there are plenty of fountain pen kits online really could go with the eye dropper fill style as well and get a colored ink to either match the gold or contrast it nicely. There are special inks as well, but no Indian inks mind you, that are a little pricey but glitter glisten it's extra fine so as to not clog the nib reservoir.
That looks so cool, the dyed outer layer and the stark white inner shell are such an amazing, graphic look :) While I did know eggs have a membrane, I did not consider it affecting the dye job since I've only ever dyed eggs once as a child.
It's eggselent Peter. I used to do mosaics, little coaster size things. I would boil the shells clean and the membrane isn't too bad if you do it every morning or when you use a few eggs, and I'm glad you started with a round mold this time, less resin waste and yes make your own mold, could be a video too
This turned out so beautiful, the overall effect really makes me think of watercolour, with the gradients and patterns like sweeping brushstrokes. Also I think the golf leaf blank you made would look gorgeous set into a bracelet like that, the blue and gold and similar textures with really compliment eachother I think.
We use the eggshells to feed the chickens (to meet their lime needs). To do this, we put the eggs in a metal bowl and put them in the oven at 150 degrees Celsius for 45 minutes. The membrane dries out and can be easily wiped off afterwards. The eggshells are then crushed in a mortar. With our quail eggs it looks similar, disadvantage there is that the egg skin is somewhat firmer. For this reason, they remain in the oven for over an hour.
Oh! oh! Make a calligraphy pen out of the goldleaf- And I knew about the membrane, it's used in a folk remedy as a natural bandaid for small cuts and abrasions apparently-

The membrane comes out of whole egg shells while rinsing them out in the sink. Use a gentle hand to hold the shells. Since you are looking for chunks and bits, you could do hard-boiled eggs. The membrane will come out as you remove the shell, and you can do it at the kitchen table(much easier on the back!). That looks really cool with the white showing!! 😎 Can you do a variety of colors on the shells and mix them in the resin?? 🌈🤗
Fabulous result, love it. I use egg shells a lot in my craft work, I soak them in warm soapy water for up to 1 hour, membranes will come off easily, then put them into the dye.

When we used to save shells for confetti eggs I’d peel out the membrane when I washed them after emptying them. It adds a few seconds to the washing, but is much easier and quicker than going back through them later like that when you have a whole bunch and they’ve already started breaking into smaller pieces.

I knew about the membrane because somehow every time I have ever peeled a boiled egg I've spent more time getting off the membrane than the actual shell!
This is the best looking dipit in a long time, maybe ever. I'm a huge fan. Well, I'm fairly short so not huge in the traditional sense, but like in the inside. Which is made of egg shells.
Dissolve the shell of an egg in pure vinegar. What's left is the membrane and the white and yolk. Did that science experiment in middle school I believe. If you leave it in the vinegar long enough the "inside" egg gets all rubbery and sometimes you can bounce the egg. Awesome and amazing video. I have been missing your videos.
For getting the inner membrane off, I'd suggest looking up a tutorial for blowing the raw egg yolk yolk out with the shell intact, you then put a small amount of vinegar or alcohol inside the shell and shake it around. That should help break down and release it, learned from Eastern European wax stencil decorative egg dying to keep it from rotting. Also, a relatively translucent dyed top coat in a different color may look interesting to cover the undyed edges of shell.
This creates such a cool design! It almost reminds me of scratch art boards that produce white lines when you scratch the outer layer off to create detail mixed with a Japanese wave woodblock print. Would totally go for matching earrings or other jewelry pieces!

one thing that has worked for me with coloring the shells through is to use a vacuum chamber. Egg shells are porous enough that putting them in a vacuum chamber as if you were going to stabilize them, works well in my experiance. But on a side note, I rather like the white bands between the colors.
Great watch thank you. I'd be down to see a strategically buried led string inside a bracelet. Not routered out and inserted but cast inside as part of the mold. With some thin clear rod you can hold the wires. Bury the end wires through some foam and arrange those so they get exposed as you lathe the blank. Remove foam to attach power for lights. Not sure if it'll work but it would be cool if it did. 3v batteries can get tiny enough for inside a bracelet. Could go full steam punk and make it a bracer with bronze ends.
The membrane will be easier to remove before you crush the shells. Remove before the shell is allowed to dry. Love the bracelet! I'd personally prefer ½ the thickness. Maybe you can try purple, red or green next time? You got the white because the dye only grabbed the surface and didn't penitrate through and through. Happy Turning! Blessings 🙌
Hard boil the eggs and chill them in ice water after, then the membrane stick to the egg and not the shell. The effect of colored shells in resin was fantastic though 👍
That was such a cool project. When you first started turning that I was really surprised that you didn’t have something for tailstock support to keep it from coming off of the jam chuck. I could swear I could hear you thinking “well shit, I should have known better” lol, glad it didn’t break though.
I use eggshells in the garden and the membrane is a pain so I always wash my shells thoroughly as soon as I use the egg. Just rub the inside of the shell under running water, or in a bowl of water, until the slimy feel goes, and the membrane is gone. Leave the shells to dry and they're ready to use at any time.
I've been trying resin out for the first time. It has been... a learning experience. You make it look so easy dude. THE STAGES OF RESIN ART PROJECT GRIEF: 1. Denial. "If I don't open the mold it hasn't failed. Maybe if I let it cure longer it will magically fix itself." 2. Anger. "CURSE THE RESIN GODS! CURSE ALL OF THEM!!!" 3. Depression. "Why. Why do I bother. WHY AM I PLAGUED BY THE CURSED URGE TO CREATE!?" Pity self greatly. Mope on couch. Stress eat leftover halloween candy. 4. Trying to figure it out. "What went wrong here? Was it mixed improperly? Was it too cold?" Blame yourself a lot because artists aren't supposed to blame their materials or something. 5. GET MAD. DO NOT WANT THE LEMONS. NEVER ACCEPT. BLAME THE MATERIALS. "Maybe the resin is actually just CRAP and I should try a different brand >:V" (I think this is what happened here, should've read the negative reviews UGH) 6. Repeat until successful???
Suggestion for a tool upgrade and video idea. Making an adapter for your sop vacuum, which sucks the shavings and smoke away from your work pieces. The shells not being dyed through was a good thing. The delicate lines add to the band nicely.
The bracelet "turned out" gorgeous! 😍😂 An "eggcellent" project indeed. I actually like the distinct white lines on the inside of the shell. It almost makes the design look like ocean waves. 😯👍 I'm one of the people who always knew about the membrane. Someone already mentioned the method to remove it via baking but did you know that if you carefully clean your eggshells and bake them then let them cool and grind them into a powder they're an eggcellent, cheap calcium supplement as well? For people (using a spice or coffee grinder is best for human consumption), dogs, birds and gardens, they're great. Waste not, want not! 😉 You do need to bake at 400°F for a minimum of 10 minutes for the garden, 20-30 minutes minimum for everything else but to be extra sure for consuption, go up to an hour. Just so any potential bacteria is killed, of course. Baking them does make them more brittle and easier to break though so if you're baking them for a project do keep that in mind. 😅

Tip for getting the membrane off the eggs is boil them again after peeling for 10 mins. It should come out in the water or is easier to peel out. Also, leave the eggs to soak in dye for a few more days. It will penetrate the shell more, but the white inside look is good.

If you are careful that squishy bag will bounce after the shell is all dissolved away
If you put that squishy bag in water it will absorb it and blow up, and you can poke a hole in it and it squirts it out like a mini fountain.
I did that in high school chemistry as well, the eggs get quite bouncy

When it was getting foamy I was thinking hmm that might be because of the membranes, but I didn’t think it would impede the dying process

The membrane comes out of whole egg shells while rinsing them out in the sink. Use a gentle hand to hold the shells. Since you are looking for chunks and bits, you could do hard-boiled eggs. The membrane will come out as you remove the shell, and you can do it at the kitchen table(much easier on the back!). That looks really cool with the white showing!! 😎 Can you do a variety of colors on the shells and mix them in the resin?? 🌈🤗

Fabulous result, love it. I use egg shells a lot in my craft work, I soak them in warm soapy water for up to 1 hour, membranes will come off easily, then put them into the dye.

When we used to save shells for confetti eggs I’d peel out the membrane when I washed them after emptying them. It adds a few seconds to the washing, but is much easier and quicker than going back through them later like that when you have a whole bunch and they’ve already started breaking into smaller pieces.

I knew about the membrane because somehow every time I have ever peeled a boiled egg I've spent more time getting off the membrane than the actual shell!

This is the best looking dipit in a long time, maybe ever. I'm a huge fan. Well, I'm fairly short so not huge in the traditional sense, but like in the inside. Which is made of egg shells.

Dissolve the shell of an egg in pure vinegar. What's left is the membrane and the white and yolk. Did that science experiment in middle school I believe. If you leave it in the vinegar long enough the "inside" egg gets all rubbery and sometimes you can bounce the egg. Awesome and amazing video. I have been missing your videos.
For getting the inner membrane off, I'd suggest looking up a tutorial for blowing the raw egg yolk yolk out with the shell intact, you then put a small amount of vinegar or alcohol inside the shell and shake it around. That should help break down and release it, learned from Eastern European wax stencil decorative egg dying to keep it from rotting. Also, a relatively translucent dyed top coat in a different color may look interesting to cover the undyed edges of shell.
This creates such a cool design! It almost reminds me of scratch art boards that produce white lines when you scratch the outer layer off to create detail mixed with a Japanese wave woodblock print. Would totally go for matching earrings or other jewelry pieces!

one thing that has worked for me with coloring the shells through is to use a vacuum chamber. Egg shells are porous enough that putting them in a vacuum chamber as if you were going to stabilize them, works well in my experiance. But on a side note, I rather like the white bands between the colors.

Great watch thank you. I'd be down to see a strategically buried led string inside a bracelet. Not routered out and inserted but cast inside as part of the mold. With some thin clear rod you can hold the wires. Bury the end wires through some foam and arrange those so they get exposed as you lathe the blank. Remove foam to attach power for lights.
Not sure if it'll work but it would be cool if it did. 3v batteries can get tiny enough for inside a bracelet. Could go full steam punk and make it a bracer with bronze ends.
Didn't see anyone else mention, but egg membrane actually makes a great bandage for bad gashes. Will help to stop bleeding until you can get stitches.

The membrane will be easier to remove before you crush the shells. Remove before the shell is allowed to dry.
Love the bracelet! I'd personally prefer ½ the thickness. Maybe you can try purple, red or green next time?
You got the white because the dye only grabbed the surface and didn't penitrate through and through.

Hard boil the eggs and chill them in ice water after, then the membrane stick to the egg and not the shell.

That was such a cool project. When you first started turning that I was really surprised that you didn’t have something for tailstock support to keep it from coming off of the jam chuck. I could swear I could hear you thinking “well shit, I should have known better” lol, glad it didn’t break though.

I use eggshells in the garden and the membrane is a pain so I always wash my shells thoroughly as soon as I use the egg. Just rub the inside of the shell under running water, or in a bowl of water, until the slimy feel goes, and the membrane is gone. Leave the shells to dry and they're ready to use at any time.

I've been trying resin out for the first time. It has been... a learning experience. You make it look so easy dude.
THE STAGES OF RESIN ART PROJECT GRIEF:
1. Denial. "If I don't open the mold it hasn't failed. Maybe if I let it cure longer it will magically fix itself."
2. Anger. "CURSE THE RESIN GODS! CURSE ALL OF THEM!!!"
3. Depression. "Why. Why do I bother. WHY AM I PLAGUED BY THE CURSED URGE TO CREATE!?" Pity self greatly. Mope on couch. Stress eat leftover halloween candy.
4. Trying to figure it out. "What went wrong here? Was it mixed improperly? Was it too cold?" Blame yourself a lot because artists aren't supposed to blame their materials or something.
5. GET MAD. DO NOT WANT THE LEMONS. NEVER ACCEPT. BLAME THE MATERIALS. "Maybe the resin is actually just CRAP and I should try a different brand >:V" (I think this is what happened here, should've read the negative reviews UGH)
6. Repeat until successful???
Suggestion for a tool upgrade and video idea. Making an adapter for your sop vacuum, which sucks the shavings and smoke away from your work pieces.
The shells not being dyed through was a good thing. The delicate lines add to the band nicely.

I'm one of the people who always knew about the membrane. Someone already mentioned the method to remove it via baking but did you know that if you carefully clean your eggshells and bake them then let them cool and grind them into a powder they're an eggcellent, cheap calcium supplement as well? For people (using a spice or coffee grinder is best for human consumption), dogs, birds and gardens, they're great. Waste not, want not! 😉 You do need to bake at 400°F for a minimum of 10 minutes for the garden, 20-30 minutes minimum for everything else but to be extra sure for consuption, go up to an hour. Just so any potential bacteria is killed, of course. Baking them does make them more brittle and easier to break though so if you're baking them for a project do keep that in mind. 😅

Tip for getting the membrane off the eggs is boil them again after peeling for 10 mins. It should come out in the water or is easier to peel out. Also, leave the eggs to soak in dye for a few more days. It will penetrate the shell more, but the white inside look is good.
