      frankly you don't want to use charcoal at all you want lamp black. which is unburnt carbon from candles. it's easy to collect just put a metal object or something heat resistant in the flame of a candle and the particles of char will accumulate.

    I love Mrs Brown's sentiment at the end. Not everyone has the money to buy high end materials to make stuff with, so they might use what's lying around their house. It might not work out quite as intended, but sometimes you can get pretty close, and it still means you can make stuff without breaking the bank to buy materials :)

    • @kaboomsihal1164
      @kaboomsihal1164 2 года назад

      Well... if you have the money to buy resin you probably also have the money to buy some resin pigments... otherwise you really shouldn't have been buying that resin either, that shit is really expensive. But it's always great to find something cheap and easy to get that works well.

    • @jamiehayes9626
      @jamiehayes9626 2 года назад +6

      @@kaboomsihal1164 there's a comment somewhere in these comments that someone made about growing up poor. They wanted to try resin crafts so they had to save up the money to get some. Even then, they ended up using a 50% off coupon plus all the money they'd saved up so in the end, they didn't hav any money left over to buy resin pigments, so they just started using stuff around the house, and it usually worked almost as well. It's a great idea for people who are just starting out so they can try their hand at it, and if they like it and really want to get into the hobby, they can shell out a bit more money to buy better materials. I personally think it's a win win, and it's a great idea for beginners

    • @kaboomsihal1164
      @kaboomsihal1164 2 года назад +1

      @@jamiehayes9626 sure... you CAN do that. It's generally not a very good idea to get into a hobby that's clearly out of your pricerange but there might be exceptions like your guy where they find it makes sense. But it's not really a case of "this makes it affordable for everyone!". It's really more a creative tool and easy to find alternative. It's a bit like someone making a video about all the things you can use instead of arrows in archery. There may be some fringe cases where someone really wants to start archery and can barely save up enough for a bow so they try alternatives instead of arrows until they can also afford arrows. But in most cases it'll be more about fun. And most people in the hobby would probably tell you if you can't afford the equipment easily you probably shouldn't get into it. That's just somewhat financially irresponsible. But sure, there are a few people who will decide to do that anyway. To each their own.

Giving them the age old examples of famous folk like Jordan and Ruth gives them a skewed sense of failure leading to super success. You tell failure to stuff it, and move the loss into a win. Do you know how valuable that is to a kid? Instead of dangling a giant figure like a carrot, I can teach them what my dad taught me, and what you obviously believe. In high school we filled a balloon with a hydrogen-oxygen mix and set it on fire. It was loud enough to make your ears ring, and you could feel hot wind on your face from more than 10 feet away. But even that was only minimally dangerous in that small quantity. I certainly wouldnt recommend busting out the family-sized XL food processor for this, but a tiny little coffee grinder, I really dont believe its too dangerous. To avoid the glass in the glow stick getting into the resin, cut the glow stick BEFORE cracking it and pour the liquid into one container. Cut/break the glass vial into another container through a sieve. Mix the two liquids to get the glow reaction sans glass.

      Or don’t do the mixing! (I think) one portion contains the dye, while the other is (more or less) the “fuel” to make it glow without a black light. But that’s long used up by the time the resin has cured, so it’s only acting to dilute the colour (and mess with the curing, if it’s water-based).

    This bowl reminds me of the dining table set my grandparents had when I was little. The table was smoked glass on a brass base and the chairs were brass and wood with this rough brown tweed-like apolstry fabric on the cushins. I think that the end tables and the coffee table were similar in style, too.

    It looks like the tortoiseshell pattern that I've seen on various things. It definitely doesn't look like what I'd imagined it would turn out like.
    I was expecting nice bright orange and pink swirls.
    A couple of experiments I'd be interested in seeing, since I'm not certain of the properties of the resins.
    A: Mix, wait, pour -- can you mix up the two colours, pour the base, then wait a while before pouring the hilight?
    B: Mix, pour, wait, Mix, pour -- can you mix up the base colour, wait until just before the end of it's working time, and then mix and pour the hilight?
    C: Pour the hilight colours over some of the wood first, let them set, then add in the base.
    D: Hulk-smash -- Could you pour the highlight colour as a flat sheet, wait for it to set, smash it up a bit, and then after pouring the base colour, add the shards? Might be an issue if they all sink, so bigger shards that can rest against other things in the pour might be needed.

    • @Cillana
      @Cillana 2 года назад

The product would heat to 350F +/- depending on its density from being mixed like that. There's also an anti-settling chemical they used but I don't know the name of.
