"And i went ahead and put it in a coffee grinder and got..." yelled at by Mrs Brown for puttin charcoal in the coffee grinder
B-b-but I thought you said you wanted your coffee black!
Its ok, I managed to grind up a pound of cat kibble in a coffee grinder for my toothless old hedgehog
And it's said she'll not let it back into the house to this day.
Someday I'm gonna put the whole Micro Mesh spiel in fancy calligraphy on a decorative throw pillow.
He should sell that as merch
Ooh, a cross stitch piece with that would be fun lol
We need more of the "Editor Peter complaining" bit.
Thanks for the photo sensitivity warning! I was able to turn my phone away until it was over. I appreciate it man!

"Just presume I did it safely so I don't have to lie to you on camera" XD if I wasn't already subscribed you would have earned my subscription
He says while being barefoot in the shop 😂😂😂💀💀💀💀😂😂 2:43-2:46 lmao
When Peter says "a couple days" you know the project is gonna sit for at least a week
Was anyone else real confused when he was like. "And now we have sticks!" *PROCEEDS TO GRAB WELDER*
It's a stick welder...
I was thinking he'd do a ToT bit and weld sticks togheter ;)
yea lol I was confused for second there!
Maybe he was just making a stick welder

You did it so safe that we can’t even see it because the camera was an extremely safe distance away… safe
And he was definitely wearing shoes. Or at least we should presume so
Right when I realized he cut those freehand with a bandsaw, the long way I literally just went 😳
I like how he says he did it safe and only shows one hand... have you got all your fingers Peter? :P
Safety Crocs along with safety squints and you are set.
@@lordtachanka80 too easy to just split them down the length like anyone else would have done
I've read "germs" and thought "oh he managed to make germs visible and cast them in resin" and didn't even question this logic
This honestly makes me wonder if it’d be possible to put a bacteria or mold culture in resin 🤔
@@Myr642 I mean, you could. It just wouldn't be as interesting, because of their size. Also, the high water content of a bacteria/mold habitable solution would make the resin not cure, or cure very slowly/badly.
@@pirig-gal im not talking bacteria/mold growing in solution; more like a colony bloom on a petri dish with solid agar. The resin surrounding the agar might not cure, but if the resin is covering all sides, that might not matter.
@@Myr642 I guess that'd work. Might even look interesting, if the mold is "fuzzy", with sprouting sporagium.
I like your Vivi pfp! 🥰
He tried to make heather gems, he wound up with Chuck E. Cheese carpet.
Maybe you can use a bunch of zip ties on the bundles to get them how you wanted? Thanks for another great video!
Not knowing anything about resin, I wonder if soaking them in the dyed stabilizing resin will make them more pliable (like soaking them in water would)
So they could be ziptied after the soak for a closer fit.
though maybe a metal tie so it could be baked in position
Hose clamps might provide tighter clamping pressure than you could pull with zip ties
one idea would be to put in a bottle, then blast a bottle with heat gun, put in another bottle an heatshrink that and maybe hose clamps to even out pressure. Great idea with hose clamps, thanks!
“Tasha Yar hates this one weird trick”. WAIT! Did he just say Tasha Yar? *rewind* “Tasha Yar hates…” YES HE DID! You’ve won my eternal love Peter!
I did the same double take!
As did I, it was the reference no one saw coming.
Deep cut - Great cut.

"yeah that was just the safest thing I'm never going to show you"
Love the video and the commentary as always.
The black version reminds me of like 90's geometric graphic arts XD in the best way. I love it!
It's like a carpet in an arcade or something
its HELLA 90s. Also kinda bowling alley/skating rink, but like, in a very nostalgic and pleasing way.
I’m incredibly surprised Peter didn’t tell us about his micro mesh sanding system. I feel like that’s a staple everytime he polishes something :D
21:21 he does here. It’s pretty late in the video though. Almost the end
I genuinely wouldn't mind even longer format than this...
Same! I tap out around 30 minutes but I’m very into a 30ish min video more regularly
I just want you to know that my shop professor got paid last semester for a class you basically taught me. Thank you so much for these videos and for keeping my last ounce of creativity alive through the least productive two years of my life.
One of the most successful fails I've seen, it looks incredible.
I got way too excited when I received this notification. I've been missing these uploads!
Same!
My issues is because I’m subscribe to so many people who does shop stuff & I can never remember his channel name.
You should use tiny ball bearings in bags for your weights that way they can form to any shape you're using
Ooh, or something like chain mail??
@@floweringgarlic clearly he needs to make his own welded chain mail, thus fulfilling the Peter Brown requirement of putting way too much effort into creating a gorgeous object that ultimately just exists to facilitate the original project 😄
I don't know about everyone else but I always get a little more excited when the video is extra long
I think we should call these ‘peter gems’ then - just as beautiful as what you were inspired by, but still new and amazing like everything you do!
Peter Gems sounds more like a colorful kidney stone
Hey Peter, when I visited the factory it’s actually more the roots that heather gems use, I assume they’re more absorbent? I liked your stuff at the end .
That makes sense. Roots absorb water, so they'd be more absorbent than the branches.
12:56 If you'd used blue dye it would have looked a lot like the pattern of bus seats
“You’re not going to lure me out...do you have a dollar?” 😂
11:39 is that a Star Trek reference I smell?
The plastic bottle coming apart on the lathe is funny to witness. The final pieces are beautiful, the inability of the cores to take to the dye lends itself really well. It's not heather gems, but you're definitely onto something!
oooh, these did turn out interesting! If you wanted something closer to traditional heather gems, i wonder if you'd have better luck with like, flat chips of wood instead? Then you could probably layer them together closer in the final mold
Woodchip micarta :o
that's basically hempwood
maybe larger bits from lathing wood, could use scraps from another project. that might be too fine though
Had to look up heathergems. I'd never even heard of them. Didn't turn out exactly the same but it was still beautiful
"Its not the worst idea I've had"
*flashbacks to pepper grinder *
These turned out really cool looking. I wonder how bamboo skewers would work with this method. You’d have something a bit more uniform so that might help get more of the dyed “wood” into the design.
2:43 you are barefoot! in the shop! Haha I'm less concerned about your mysterious safe bandsaw work! Just kidding. You do you and I just keep watching.
When you said, "I'm going to bifurcate this one on the band saw, as well" and went off-screen...I thought for sure you'd utter this blood-curdling scream to make us jump!
That looks super neat - I love the color scheme! That design would also make for a really cool shift knob in a manual transmission car
Ok, this was WAY too cool!! Deff. NOT too long either. More longer ones! 😉
We don't mind longer videos less often! You are a maker, and coming up with ideas then making them takes time! Keep up the great work Peter!
What do you do with the "pucks" that were cut off the ends! They might look cool polished up as a pendant.
"The bark on this tree branch is going to get in the way of dieing." ~BUFFY (When making stakes)
i love the knobs btw you should try this with tooth picks
A croquet mallet would’ve been the perfect thing to make with a heather gem.
Anyone? Hello? I’ll see myself out.
I was thinking about them the whole time.
Oh my god nooooo. Buuuut he'd have to make 3 or 4 with the right colors.
It be like a candy store of mallets
Took me a second, then I couldn't stop laughing.
Your honesty and humor makes these videos so much more fun for us average people. It’s fun to watch you have fun and figure things out as you go!
What?! I’m a Heather, how have I never heard of heathergems?! 🤣 I love how yours turned out!
I read that as "Homemade Heathen Gems" my dyslexic eyes win again.
Stabilize popsicle sticks. They've got a more regular shape so you'll be able to get more density
i'm so glad Peter hasn't forgotten Dye Trying, it's my favourite type of videos from the channel
I absolutely have no problem with you uploading longer videos, I love them
100% try that again! I've seen how Heather Gems are made (thanks How It's Made), and you've got like, 90% of the process already figured out!
I wonder if using a fresher “wet” branch would work better for absorbing the dyes? If it’s wet it might still have some capillary action going on. Think white flowers in food coloring water…
If the dye was dissolved in something aqueous, I think you would be right. Idk if the resin he is using works that way though.
less moisture - better color penetration.
probably treat it like dying a flower, wonder how it would like resin instead of water though.
put the fresh stick (that still has some leaves and buds on) in a pot of colored water or resin (try both) leave it, see how much it absorbs, then dry it out and infuse it
@@konzetsu6068 the product's website says that the material requires less than 5% for the product to correctly be absorbed.

@@Sharpman76 No, no, no! That was from wrestling bears!
I'm going to make a really bad suggestion that I totally don't expect you to listen to.
Once you get the Heather Gem process perfected, make a Bowling Ball out of it.
I warned you it was a bad idea.
@@juubilo1509 **baa dumm dumm cymbal crash**
Gaaawd dad, stop embarrassing me in front of my friends. 🤣
I don’t think a bowling ball is a bad idea . a gun stock was the idea I had . how far you can imagine is your only limitations. i make beautiful wood fowls with out a wood lathe, exotic cutting boards/ butcher blocks, a excellent wood carver, knife maker , long bow maker , rye fishing flies, make fishing lures, fishing, hunting, have built a boat , outher things I seem to not remember right now. oh I forgot some of my wood working I use my own dye to stain I make with rot dye, I have the recipes for around 100 colors. if I want to earth tone say raised carving of roses I stain light enough so grain shows through. I would be glad to share my stain recipes which I also dye deer hair for fly tying. I have on hand at least 400-450 colors of deer hair. never limit your imagination, and a whole world is open to you. Nana and papa aka the hunter from the foothills of the blue ridge mountains in North Carolina wishing you well.
Has he turned a sphere before? If not, I wouldn't mind seeing that.
'A really big industrial machine for smashing' is my favourite sentence from this episode.
There is nothing more satisfying than when Peter Brown breaks out the micro mesh for a project, change my mind!
Love the unexpected Tasha Yar reference. Good to see another Trekkie!
I need corkscrews like these now. This is my mission
Is it just me that never gets tired of hearing "Micro Mesh". Just the mention of it makes me happy.
I love these "Peter Gems" they are so cool!!! I'd love to see more videos experimenting with different dyed grasses in resin, or even dyed leaves in resin. I love your channel! Thank you for another great video!
It's okay, Tasha Yar gets to come back as a Romulan or whatever.
She also manifested when the enterprise c travels thru a worm hole and runs into...(out of the whole entire universe) another enterprise c. Then when she figures out she died a meaningless death goes back to the past to fight and bring piece to the future federation and klingons.
So... she's got that going for her.
I am so glad i am not the only one who got that reference
@@richardpatterson4312 I've been meaning to go back and rewatch the series. Even its fumbles are enjoyable.
Her kid does anyway.
….which means the resin piece will come back as…. A cheese knife? (Trying to think of the parallel with a bottle top.)
This is a neat project, totally foreign concept to me. Not see if you’re a Marvel fan, but it would be cool to see you take on the Infinity Stones
I’ve never heard of heather gems so this was a super fun ride, having absolutely no idea what the outcome would be but loving the journey!
I have no idea what a heather gem is, but I'm excited to watch this video even if it doesn't have captions on it yet, therefore I'm also excited to rewatch this in like a week
When soaking the sticks it would probably be easiest to lay them in trays and weigh them rathe than in the cups
I've never seen the film Heathers so I thought this was somehow related to that at first.
It may not be what you wanted but I think it looks really cool nonetheless!
"Electric Blue" was already stuck in my head. Thanks for reinforcing it! ;)
Can I just say how much joy your videos bring me? They're always so entertaining and I just love the sound of the machinery. Reminds me of when I was younger and joined my parents in the workshop =D
The worst idea would have been the murder bowl, wouldn’t it?
Bark the sticks then bumdles them together befpre drying them? Then start the process again :)? I think it would look great with some wheat from a field also
Ooh! Wheat-straw would be an interesting look! Or a bundle of hollow reeds, or those reeds that have the spongy core.
I'm not sure what heather gems are supposed to look like , but they are both beautiful. The clear is my personal favorite , I like being able to see through to the different colors.
It's also nice to know I'm not the only person who has songs popping into my brain at random times because of their lyrics ! Off to find an Icehouse video ...
🥰
No matter how often you post we never mind a longer video. Its all up to you though and what you can do in your free time to amuse us. That was cool to watch thank you

A bigger version of these would make the coolest gearshift knobs ever.
I totally agree with that idea
100% yes 🤘🤘
Oh man, that is frustrating to hear the ice cream man and not have cash. I used to flip the couch cushions when I was a kid and heard the ice cream man. Sometimes, I was able to get enough and sometimes I wasn't.
Great video. I love it when you make stuff. It comes out looking beautiful.
You're probably my favorite creator on this website. I love following video game channels, but when it comes to truly creating (more than just content) I absolutely love your stuff. Keep up the great work!

Custom drawer pulls are what they look like to me. Love them!
Bark is so much easier to remove when the wood isn’t as dry. It’s interesting that you didn’t initially remove the bark and then let the branch dry.

Omg I read your comment right as he said it😂😂
If you still have the end cut-offs you could make pendants with them!
It's been awhile since I've watched some of your videos and I'm glad I came back. There's always something cool at the shop.
Peter, I dunno about anyone else, but I definitely would be happy with videos this length becoming the norm.
I'd love to see a minimalist chess set made like this.
11:39 Jonathan Frakes hates it even more; he had to go swimming in it! 😆
I was in Scotland last year and I could only find a few things like ear rings, rings, pendants, in Heather gems. This is awesome. I turn pens. Thanks for sharing!
So beautiful, reminds me of mid 50's early 60's stuff my mother had, she had a coffee table made of thick cardboard painted black with weird coloured shapes on the top, it's was alas falling apart by the time I was born but I remember being about 6 and my mum finally throwing it out
Would've been really cool if the dye was glow on the dark!
The stabilizing resin actually fleureses under a black light! Watch his charcoal bowl project!!
"Tasha Yar hates this one weird trick" - now *that* is a deep cut.
Every second episode you have a new resin pump, I love it.
Peter - Thanks for another fascinating video. You've helped me move past the days troubles.
I'm sure it was safe enough, you still have all your fingers.
Wait, does Mrs. Brown still have all her fingers?
Why do i feel like 90% of us saw the title and said: "what is a heather gem?"
I'm adding the comment, to boost the engagement, because I enjoy you content to much! No matter how many pen videos you make, I''m gonna watch them all.
Have you ever considered making a “satisfying moments on the lathe” video? I’m almost always mesmerized by the sound and seeing the resin or wood get shaped
