I had both a dust collector and a full overhead shop air filter running. I filmed in short spurts, and this took me almost a full afternoon to turn as I keep the sessions to a few minutes at a time. I thought the charcoal looked cool. Then I saw the lathe shaking and shaking and I thought it was going to blow up in your face. Then at the 12 minute mark I could see THROUGH the bowl as you were sanding it. Awesome. And then you turned on the black light. I salute you, Mister Brown! I think you were as surprised as we were. Wow. Hmm, have you tried a duct tape bowl? crumple up some duct tape and soak it in resin. Its got a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together...

So use the stabilizing resin, some charcoal, regular casting resin, and a black light bulb....use some really cool wood, make yourself the coolest light fixture ever and use the “bowl” as the “lampshade”
You'd have to be careful and make sure there's some way for heat to escape from the top, if resin heats up too much it'll become malleable and loose its shape

My girlfriend and I both love the way the bowl turned out in blacklight. She wanted me to express the idea she had of putting the bowl on a lighted stand, but have the bulb be blacklight so you can see the effect on the bowl.

i don't think CFLs or LEDs produce any UV light. Iirc, all of it gets converted to visible light by the fluorescent substance that covers the glass/diodes.
@@rfldss89 LED's are not if it not special made UV LED's but CFL has some UV in it's spectre even after luminophore. So it gives that tint on charcoal or you can see shielding elements on money under CFL light :)
I wonder if the blue hues and highlights could be a result of the stabilizing resin displacing some of the tars and oils that remain in charcoal. You should ask Cody's Lab. He did a video about activating charcoal, and mentioned the oils and tars that are present in "raw" charcoal.
@@Lunatikhex my argument against that is, that it was once wood and therefore organic. Most organic things turn brown when they oxidize. Fire is a rapid oxidation reaction and charcoal is made with it, so I politely disagree. TL;DR: Nah, wood is brown.
@@jairusswint6703 blue can also be a color in brown (browns made with equal parts of the primary colors) but it could be a brown with more blue then red, and still make the hints of blue when burnt

Gosh, just casting the stabilizing resin with the normal resin would create such a cool effect. With the black spots it looks like it's from another planet, like from Avatar.
The blue color on the charcoal could be oil residue that didn't burn off when they burn the wood into charcoal and the stabilising resin bought it out and and put it on the surface of the charcoal
Probably more the stabilizer than the oil. They make a point to use dryer types of wood in charcoal production. However I can't physically inspect the charcoal to verify that.
I think... this might just be my favorite piece you’ve done. It’s so unique and unexpected! I’d love to see more pieces experimenting with the stabilizing resin in the other.

I will tell you, that while my lungs were safe, the amount of charcoal dust I had to remove from my ears was outrageous.

What if you stick a Bunch of black light led's in an added on base on the bottom, like something that it would sit on. would the whole bowl glow?
This would have made an incredible knife handle or even rings with the glow in the dark aspect of it.

That blue tint is reaction to UV in daylight lamps. And under pure UV lamps it looks fantastic!
