American Dragon: Jake Long was such a fun, well developed, action packed show that I have been wanting to give another watch through too... and that's exactly what I did! So today let's take a look at American Dragon: Jake Long, see what it was, what happened to it, my opinions on the show and more!
Character Art By Jerry Meehan - Развлечения
Thanks so much for watching! Are you a fan of American Dragon: Jake Long? Which season did you enjoy better, Season 1 or Season 2?
i love jake long
I love both equally
Season 1
I liked the first season, or at least what I watched of it. It reminded me of Danny Phantom. However, the art shift in the second season kind of turned me off. It looked too cartoony, so I never gave it a chance thinking it was going to be aimed at younger kids.
Absolutely!! It's honestly a toss up between the seasons for me, thanks and safety to ya as always friend!!
Personally, I really like the "ancient or immortal creature who loves keeping up with modern times" trope
It make more sense coz they live for so long they want to keep up compared to someone who is about to die they don't care as much.
@@RexZShadow exactly!!! I don't get why so many immortals choose to become hermits for centuries. Like Jesus thats Boring. Especially in modern day where it'd be fairly easy for an unaging immortal to circle around a big city without people realizing theyre not aging.
one of the things i love most about this show is "long" means "dragon" in chinese, so the show's literally called american dragon: jake dragon
I personally prefer American Long: Jake Long!
Dammit Dragon Dragon
depends on the character used as the last name since long (pronounced: Loh ng) can mean any number of things especially the tone used
Jake also means American in American, so the show’s name is even more literally called American dragon: American dragon
@@mujiescomedy279 you sir are a genius
1:26 Wait, isn't the special thing about Jake that he's the *first* American Dragon?
Because his grandfather is an immigrant and his mother was skipped by the bloodline, he's the first American born member of his family with dragon powers.
Also I enjoyed the series, but personally I would've liked if they kept the season 1 artstyle, I wanted to see how the Huntsman looked without his mask in the more detailed art style.
Correct
Fu dog, specifically mentions that Jake is the *First Official* American Dragon.
He is indeed. In fact, when they go to some special dragon meet up, Jake got jealous that he wasn't "the new hotness" as he met someone who was going to be the first Canadian Dragon.
@@wildste wasn't it the first Australian Dragon, not Canadian?
@@friendlyneighbourhoodbridg1354 Been many years since I've seen it, so very likely
It's honestly kinda funny how much Chinese culture was inadvertently apart of my childhood. I mean, we had American Dragon, Jackie Chan Adventures, Xaolin Showdown, etc.
That was before people would get offended about american cartoons being based on other cultures
Same! There was also Three Delivery which was pretty good
@@BP.l0ne lol no. That's always been a thing. The world didn't just suddenly become more PC, there have been advocacy groups for this kind of stuff for decades. 60 years ago people got offended when they saw a woman's thigh and in 2022 people wanna act like it was just recently that society started getting offended at everything lol
Anyone else remember Sagwa on PBS? It was about Chinese cats. I barely remember anything about it but I know I loved it back in the day.
@@maroonggirl I barely remember it, but 5-year-old me loved it lol
And now for some fun voice acting facts:
1. This show marks the first time John DiMaggio voiced a talking dog (Fu Dog). He would later voice a talking dog two more times in 2010, Jake from Adventure Time and Niblet from Pound Puppies.
2. We have Jake and Rose voiced by Dante Basco and Mae Whitman. This show came out a month before Avatar The Last Airbender, where they voiced Zuko and Katara.
3. We have Rotwood voiced by Freakazoid himself, Paul Rugg.
the Huntsmen leader is voiced by Jeff Bennet, who ironically plays in another show John Dimaggio is in, hes Azmuth in ben 10 alien force/ ultimate alien, where John plays the angry tiger alien Rath
@@LocalTorchwoodIntern Jeff certainly has range since, in this series, he also voiced Jake's father. The sheer contrast between the two characters coming from the same person is impressive.
Probably one of the reasons why Dante and mae shipped zuko and katara over katara and aang when talking about the show, they already had their own ship here with this show lol
Correction: DiMaggio also also voiced Tux Dog on The Problem Solverz (a dog character)
@@Andy-km1xp I've never seen that show, though I've heard of it.
How can I forget Jake Long American Dragon 😂 Used to watch this show every Saturday morning as a kid and every weekday afternoon during my early teen years here in Melbourne Australia at like 4pm ish, Adored this show 😊
Always found it funny how simular it is to Juniper Lee just gender bent.
Juniper has a little brother, Jake has a little sister, they both have sassy Grey dogs and their grandparents are their mentors.
Truly one of the most bizarre coincidences
I thought the same. But apparently Jake long premiered way before juniper. And juniper only ran for one season.
I haven't heard of that show Juniper Lee in years lol but I didn't even realize that till I watched this vid it comparison of facial design or artstyle.
@@ouranhshc100 it wasn't that long actually. Jake Long premiered just 4 months before Juniper Lee
@@ouranhshc100 It only had one season? That's disappointing, I wish we could've got more seasons, I LOVED that show when I was a tween.
4:42 The irony about Spud is that he was actually a genius but he just doesn't show it because he likes to kick back and hang out instead.
It didn't feel the same when the art changed to me but even sadder when the 3rd and 4th seasons weren't renewed! Still love dragons to this day 🤩
Dragon what 😏
Yeah I hated the new art style.
I don't see WTF made the new director think it was better.
First of all yes he's of chinese decent but his title is AMERICAN dragon.
Hence it was better to keep his design more in line with English dragons (thicker more lizard like body) rather than the more serpent like dragon bodies of Chinese dragons. It made more sense themeatically.
But in seaosn 2 just ... ALL dragons are serpent like which just feels overl biased to the chinese view of dragons.
You mean the fact that it wasn’t renewed for more seasons?😅
@@metazoxan2 I agree I liked the animation of the first season wayyy better
@@rossgod 🚨cease and desist🚨
One of my favorite episodes of this show was when Jake got grouped up with a rag tag of misfit creatures. Among them being an unlucky Leprechaun and an aquaphobic mermaid.
It's also the same episode Rose found out that Jake is the American Dragon.
One thing I gotta ask: Wasn't it revealed that Spud was actually a genius in one episode? Like, legit high IQ super genius? He just didn't care about that kind of stuff and would rather lead a less stressful, more socially fulfilling life?
Spud is a Genius yes who chooses to hide it and not show it.
I couldn't tell you which episode but I distinctly remember it being a throwaway line in season 1 lol
Genius by birth slacker by choice
@@NotSoLegendaryGreen It was in a s2 episode. It might have been 2x10 but I'm not sure. Definitely a s2 episode though. One with Eli Pandarus
@@NotSoLegendaryGreen No it wasn't a single line, there was an episode about it. Something about a magic puzzle box of doom.
Yes I loved that show at ages 12 and 13
My best friend had gotten his daughter watching this, Now she’s obsessed with dragons. Whenever she’s play fighting she yells “dragon up” (Despite her often using some other characters power, such as Demon slayer’s nature breathing)
damn i remember having an imagination lol sounds fun.
@@dogsbecute Lmaooooo Time to try to re-cultivate it
Aww that definitely sounds like a kid’s imagination. Mixing powers and shows together seemingly at random haha.
I always thought the German teacher was the huntsman leader in disguise. What a crazy twist that would’ve been don’t you agree?
I would've LOVED that to happened.
@@pleaseshutup7053 yeah that is really the most cliche "twist" in entertainment. Gasp, the minor antagonist we've been mocking this whole time turned out to actually be the big bad!? If i had a nickel for every time that happened, I'd be richer than a bitcoin billionaire.
Nah. He's just Disney's version of Mr.Crocker.
@@cartooncottage2024 true lol
@@cartooncottage2024 Just as The Dark Dragon is Disney's Darkseid.
I remember this being the SHIT in my childhood; I still know the lyrics to the theme song to this day because it was that much if a banger. I remember the biggest plot twist of my childhood being when Jake finally revealed himself to Rose: "If you're gonna kill me Rose...say it to my real face *turns into a human*". Was so annoyed when I didn't find out her answer.
I got back into the show last year when I remembered that Jake and Rose had the same voice actors as Zuko and Katara, and that they were technically alternate dimension Zutara lol.
Her answer was to let him go and choosing to fail, leading her to be sent back to the academy.
I remember this show fondly, particularly the arc where they enter the hunt's clan training center.
Yes! The drama when they got caught and then Jake had to battle Rose
I remember Jake Long vs. Danny Phantom on Death Battle
Definitely was one of my favourite Disney Channel shows. There was something so charming about shows like this, The Proud Family, Kim Possible and Lilo and Stitch: the Series! That’s hard to describe
Fun fact: thanks to Lilo and Stitch ALL these shows, plus Recess exist in the same Universe
I would’ve loved to see a crossover of Jake Long and Juniper Lee. Both shows aired on different networks but had a lot of similarities that would work for making a great episode/movie.
I would've LOVED to see that.
I would have loved for this show to crossover with Danny Phantom as well
Danny phantom as well
@@James-yj3rq Death Battle did a crossover.
@@wisconsinking323 I would like a crossover spin-off about when Jake Long’s sister Haley meets Juniper Lee’s brother Ray Ray becoming a love couple and trying to achieve their goals into become the next American dragon and te xuan ze
I remember how catchy the theme song was. I also remember hating the art style change in the 2nd season.
It's so funny to me because even now I love the s2 art style so much more than the s1 art style 😂 but to wach their own :)
I loved this show as a kid.
I wish there was season 3 of this legendary childhood. Sadly it ended in 2007😢😢😢
It was so cool when Jake Long was added to Disney Heroes Battle Mode a mobile game featuring 200+ Disney characters!
Remember that time Jake Long helped Zuko get his fire ending back?
aaand now I need to see a Zuko vs Jake battle
I liked the style of the first season way more.
Just rewatched this on Disney + not too long ago
I’d like to see a video about Recess in the near future.
If this was remade, it should be about the little sister now in college and Jake already being an established hero, maybe with a family. I would watch that
They'll probably just did what Proud Family did and go 1 or 2 years ahead
Naw. It should focus on his son and Haley giving him pointers.
@@TheJuicyJediJester . I guess, but I would prefer a *Haley Long* series focusing on her
Just to give her the spotlight
@@mwizachihana9551 Haley could still get tons of spotlight in my idea to.
I’d watch the shit out of that
I remember American Dragon perfectly to this day it was a really great show with an awesome theme song and super underrated too and I don’t care what anyone says I enjoyed the second season more than the first season
I agree. Season 2's plot was more consistent, and I honestly preferred the art style.
The First season was more like a comedic cartoon, while the second season had more serious plotlines and had an anime style. I liked both.
Yea I used to like the first season more as a kid but when I rewatched it later I like the second season more...
i rewatched the whole series on disney plus
Yes loved it when I was young I have to rewatch this again
I would absolutely love for you to make more American Dragon: Jake Long content
Me who recently finished rewatching American Dragon Jake Long 2 weeks ago: “YES. IT WAS AMAZING!!”
I watched it all the time but I'm literally watching it over again right now I just watched a episode and then came to this I wish they would of made it long 2 series is not enuff I loved it so much it's why I'm literally rewatching it on Netflix
I remember watching this when I was younger and I rewatched this too many
I loved Jake Long so much! Another childhood cartoon crush, which was not helped by the fact that I later realized Dante voiced him and I'd had a crush on Zuko too. One of my favorite characters were the Oracle Twins, because the happy one predicted bad fortunes and the goth one predicted good ones. I liked the irony.

I'd found this show to be highly underrated and it was an Awesome show from Disney Channel hell I'd remembered that crossover with the Lilo & Stitch series it was Awesome
I rewatched this show when they put it on Disney+ and MAN did I love it. The overarching stories were so interesting like Rose and Jake's relationship and the humor was perfect. Needs to come back!

i think this was one of the shows that introduced kid me to the concept of thinking that something is good while not caring about it at all
This show brings back so many good memories! 🔥
I’ve been eagerly waiting for this video. Yes please, I’d love another Jake Long video! 😁
I found it really interesting to hear about the people who contributed to the show and its direction. It makes sense why I liked it so much - creators from my other favorite shows had a role. I love learning the minds behind projects!
As always, thanks for a great video. 😊
Thanks so much for watching!
Was waiting for this one!…
Please do a full retrospective
Loved the show. It was awesome. The change in season 2 caught me off guard but it was still ok. This month is 17 years since it came out. A few days before my 12th birthday. Thank you for this video. Another memory I can revisit.
Thanks so much for watching!
@@JordanFringe94 You're welcome!
This show was a huge part of my childhood. I wanted to be a Red Dragon like Jake. I even drew my self portrait in art class as myself transformed into the American Dragon. This show was legendary.
Yes I remember this show! Dante Basco va’d some of my biggest childhood crushes, including Jake Long haha
American Dragon Jake Long was ahead of its time. The first and only Asian cartoon show on Disney.
I was really into this show during its first season and I was really hyped for the second season but I was very put off by the change in art style. Jake becoming slimmer wasn't a big deal but it's just so jarring seeing EVERYONE look noticeably different. Sad to see a really promising show undone by behind the scenes stuff
Some of the redesigns I hated was the Oracle Twins, two well developed characters who practically looked unrecognizable, and the Huntsman, who's new mask revealed more of his clearly human skin making the final reveal of his face pretty underwhelming.
@ǞЯƮΦЯiǞ РęПDЯǞgΦП
Also, them being identical twins with different styles helped emphasize their opposite personalities. In their redesigns, they practically look nothing alike, making their solitary differences feel irrelevant.
I bet that's what killed the show and why no season 3 4 became reality if the show popularity for season 1 you doing everything right don't change a damn thing but they did send they killed it sadly
I could get used to almost everything except for Jake's grandfather dragon form, I loved the early design so much, why did they need to change it so drastically
Man, this show is an absolute favorite of mine. Spyro was my favorite game growing up, so a show about a kid being able to turn into a dragon was a match made in heaven! Grand show, and grand video!
When ever I think of this series I think of the first season art style and theme song but remember the second season stories a little more.
one of my favorites
I remember arguing with my sister that Rose was the huntsgirl, and when the reveal happened I was like "Ha, I told you!"
I would like a retrospective of this series. One note: Spud is actually the smartest of the trio, it was proven in a bunch of episodes. He literally chooses to hide his genius for some reason I don’t remember. Would like you to talk about Jake and Rose’s relationship, it was one of my favorite things about this show.
I think he was more of a mathematical genius while Trixie was the most well rounded of the three. And definitely the smartest when it comes to common sense.
@@tripleg2513 he was a computer expert, able to get a high enough score in an exam to go to a intellectual boarding school and chooses to bring his intelligence down. I'm pretty sure it's not just math.
He needed a Lot of failed tests for an art wall.
@@SallyBMcgill computers fall into the realm of mathematics. Also, he was only brought into a mathematics class to solve that algorithm for what I think was Pandora's box. Otherwise, when it comes to anything outside of it such as history or English he would be average at best. Slightly below average when it comes to common sense and understanding.
You may think it impossible for someone to only be really good in one subject but it's not. My brother was always great at math (algebra and calculus too) because he just understood it but when it came to any other subject (aside from grammar) it would just about kill him. Especially English. He has wonderful Grammer but no creative brain at all when it comes to writing things like essays. He just kind of locks up.
Happy anniversary to American dragon Jake long
I would love a Retrospective!
American dragon was one of my favorite shows as a kid I always preferred the design of the first season over the second season
The first season design is peak.
Ironic question: Yes. Most of us *do* remember American Dragon: Jake Long.
Dude i just clocked out rn for lunch ,perfect timing
Yes I did remember this Jordan thank you.
I remember reading an article with some Disney high up that stated the main reason for season 2´s change of art style was that it was cheaper and easier to animate. I could personally never watch the season sadly. The style just was not for me.
But it looks way better than season 1
@@TheJuicyJediJester A question of taste. I was a child then and preferred the more childish animation. Having that taken away was not fun.
I read that they hired a new art director or something and he said that Jake was too buff and some other things. Also read he changed the style for easier viewing.
@@RoseCurry5 what does he got against -buff dragons- imeanwhat
The second season definitely spoiled it for me too. I remember feeling legitimately affronted with the change as a kid. The original design was so much more pleasing to the eye than the jagged feel of the new one, and the abrupt change in and of itself felt so offputting and uncalled for.
Even now, I can't think of another show before or since that has done a redesign like that either, and rightfully so. It's just plain bad form imo.
I would love more American Dragon content. I always consider Jake a New York distant cousin. Not many of us Longs out there. Funny tidbit Jake last name isn’t random, Long is Chinese for Dragon. And with my first name Translated from Gaelic my whole name is Champion Dragon. Can’t get cooler than that. 😎 (loved the video Jordan)

Another show that I definitely remembered. I thought this show has 3 seasons. Also I had no idea there was a proper series finale until I went to check the info on it (aka wiki). I thought it ended with the homecoming episode. Now I know. Anyways thanks for covering this.
I was just singing along to both theme songs the other day!
I prefer Season 1’s theme song but Season 2’s art style has grown on me in recent years.
Thank you Jordan. I thank you sir

My god this series was a really interesting one for me i remember that i watched the entirety of the show on Disney Channel (alongside a special Disney Block on Paraguayan TV) and i've always been wondering about the whole shift on art style for season 2. Oh right the whole situation between Jake and Rose and their rivalry without knowing that the other was the enemy always loved that. Really loved both seasons equally, and i never saw that Lilo and Stitch crossover but looks interesting. Loved the characters and the whole world, the ways they integrated mythical elements etc. I normally don't comment but been enjoying your channel since the end of Fringemas (when i finally decided to check your stuff and got hooked) keep up the good work
OMG I just looked for this a few days ago hoping you made a video about it!
Oh man i really loved this show growing up, and I really loved the theme song 😁
I absolutely loved the art style of the first season. The second had more complex storylines and more focus on side characters, but I loathed the art direction and sound direction of the second season. Would be very interested in a full retrospective on this series!
totally agree, i hate how simplistic they made everything look in season 2 and some of the designs suffered for it. just for an example his grandpas dragon form looks so much cooler in season 1 compared to 2.
Even so, it's a shame that it ended so quickly. Considering the quality of the show overall was still top notch.
My favorite part is the design of dragons. It's a median between English and Chinese dragon designs
it did have some cool designs though i do think some of them suffered in the season 2 art style, for example his grandpas Dragon form looks so much cooler in season 1 than in season 2 imo. wish it kept the season 1 art style
I got to meet Dante Basco and even do a dragon up with him my life felt complete after that
i remeber playing his game on the library computers when i was little 😩
I will never stop being mad this show got cancelled especially when it did.
I know the show is old as heck but still MAJOR SPOILER WARNING.
It got cancelled right at the PERFECT time for more stories to be told. Jake's dad found out about the magical side of the family (and his immidiate reaction was wanting to fight to protect his family and being concerned for Jake before ANYTHING else) and Rose (somehow) got her memories back even though those memories shouldn't exist period. SO many stories could be told with these new additions but nope! Cancelled
I always thought it was funny John DiMaggio played 2 different magical dogs in 2 different series, and they were practically the same lol
I haven't forgotten, because I actually watched it for the first time ever last year.
i watching american dragon jake long 8 years i love this animation and i'm resemble jake long i love rose ❤️😆
I'd honestly love a full retrospective on this series. This was one of my favorites growing up, and I was pretty bummed when it ended. Of course (if I'm remembering correctly) the 2nd or 3rd season of Avatar was coming out around that time, so I shifted my focus towards that. Again, if I remember correctly. I'm right around your age (maybe a year or three younger I'm guessing), but my memory isn't quite like yours lol Appreciate the work, man.
I really liked the oracle twins, they had an interesting dynamic with how their powers shaped their personalities. One would see only good things in the future and end up being moody and depressed from all the nice surprises of life being spoiled for her and the other seeing only bad things to the point when any little good thing that happens is so much better by comparison.
It's weird that season 2 they both just stopped being twins. Like I could get that people sometimes dye their hair but with the whole changing face shape/nose shape/eye color/skin color it just seems like there isn't much else to make these two to actually look like twins or even just related in any way.
Huntsman is definitely Bennett’s second best villain role behind Shocker from Spectacular Spider-Man.
I'm currently rewatching this show on Disney+
Why did he become from a hot cool dragon to a skinny ugly one... :(((
I couldn’t stand the animation change. I always loved the OG animation style and never watched the 2nd season.
But a live action would be awesome! Love to see it!
The Witches of Woodstock are so cute on episode Game On
I miss this show😢😢
Too many unnecessary changes went on in the 2nd season. 1st season was way better
