It’s been 20 years hasn’t it? This is still considered to be one of the best things that any toy company has done with their IP and merchandise. Did you know that Jeff Gomez, the creator of this universe and CEO of Starlight Runner, once did a AMA about five years ago and told many of the community members some things that we didn’t know about world race? This one will be a bit of a long read so bear with me. here were some of my favorite answers or fun facts : 1.) The original ending of this movie was drastically different. It was going to be more grand and conclusive with an explanation for the accelerons, CLYP and the drones and the greater hot wheels universe that had been established in this series. 2.) There were supposed to be a connection with the original 1968 hot wheels cartoon. Vert Wheeler would have been the grandson of the original Jack “Rabbit” Wheeler So his father would be Jack Wheeler jr. Jeff also confirmed a fan theory that the Deora II was meant for Vert’s father but Dr. Tesla switched the designation at the last moment once he saw The newly licensed driver’s skills and faster reflexes. It was in one of the earlier drafts of the story. 3.) the team lead leaders, and their characters were based on both personality traits. Jeff had as well as people he had met. Taro Kitano for example was based on his karate instructor back in the 1970s. Gelorum was the nickname for a crush he had on a girl. Funnily enough, she found out that she had the same namesake as the villain and was not amused. They also wanted to include more set pieces like a water track; but found it too difficult to animate, and the budget wasn’t high enough so they switched to ice for the final part of the race. 4.) Much of the animation errors and somewhat choppy storytelling has to do with the fact that Mattel Green let the project in summer 2002 but only gave them about half of the year to get everything done. Which led to a lot of crunch time and cool concepts and storylines being dropped in order to fulfill the deadline. Jeff and his teams had to work 16 hour shifts iirc. 5.) there were many scenes and plot lines that Jeff wanted to include back when the series was more episodic instead of being crammed into one movie. Some of which would’ve been amazing had they made the final draft. One was Dan Dresden, introducing himself as a new team leader in a deleted scene from the original fourth part of the movie. another was explaining Gelorum’s scheme, and how Kurt was supposed to fit into it. But the one people really wanted to see was when fan favorite side character, Esmeralda, was supposed to have a really cool storyline where she developed a rivalry with Banjee and they would have a race to settle who could be the leader of the team. Jeff also thinks that her and another driver from the scorcher team (Krakatoa) were more than friends as well. Some of the other side characters that didn’t get lines or screen time had really cool stories in the comics that came with the cars. 6.) he also gave answers to some lingering questions people had. How did Markie get to the second staging area? There was supposed to be a homage to the speed racer franchise when it was shown that he had hidden in the trunk of one of the cars in order to get there. How did Lani get her car back after it was swept away by the lava? Jeff said in the story Bible Tezla had a retrieval system. Which could also explain how Toño and Esmeralda, or other unlucky drivers, got back to the real world after their cars were sabotaged by the CLYP robots in the final stage (he also said they sabotaged them off screen). The story was inspired by a D & D campaign had played with friends a few years prior to production. 7.) Jeff was initially not a fan of the Acceleracers series, considering how much deviation there was from the universe and lore created. he grew to appreciate it and his idea of a sequel was different. He did confirm the scrim corporation was a shell company for the silencerz and that Banjee was rescued by them and became one of their drivers. What’s cool is that the newest hot wheels game, Unleashed II, is going to have several cars from HWY35 and Acceleracers as DLC. Shows you how much people still love this series. I wonder if there will ever be a return to it it may be expand upon the original story. There’s so much potential here.
Thank you so much for bringing more exposure to this niche side of Hot Wheels as this was when they were at their peak! AcceleRacers fans have been BEGGING for the series to return ever since!
Fun fact, in an AMA the creator that was hired by hot wheels talks about how the series was based on a tabletop rpg (think dungeons and dragons) he created and ran for some of his friends in his youth. Also the video game is fire, I wholly reccomended for an entry in to hot wheels arcade racers.
The real life deora 2 with the livery from the sequel. Namely team Teku, was toured through the country courtest of Mattel through the Hotwheels legends tour The final stop was at the mattel hq in california where it was showed off along side the barbie corvette stingray The influence of this series cannot be understated. As someone who grew up with the series, I can easily say these movies still have a good place in my heart. So much so, I am recreating the soundtrack 😅 I'm glad to see this video and looking forward to the Acceleracers series you will have (hopefully)
Thanks so much for this amazing nostalgic video. I grew up watching this Beloved Animated Classic and been fascinated with Hot Wheels since at a very young age as my mom was a Hot Wheels Collector back when it originally first launched in 1968. Brings me back memories on getting “World Race” on Christmas Day and watching the movie for hours with it’s racing action, unique diverse cast of characters, and even the amazing music including the iconic song “Hot” from Smash Mouth performed by the Great Steve Harwell. It’ll be great to see More Hot Wheels in the near future especially after more than 55 Years since it began.
I own Ring of Fire but I managed to watch the rest on YT and I really enjoyed both it and Acceleracers. You can tell there was care put into this as while it's not the best animated series ever it is still solid in its own right and I think still holds up today.
I've always been impressed by the camerawork in this. Considering how early the CGI was, I have to wonder whether they were the first to do some of these tricks.
Loved World Race as a kid, Scorchers were my favorite team. Looking forward to you covering Acceleracers as well, even though that ends on a Cliffhanger. Also, it's thought that Vert actually wasn't meant to get the Deora II, but his Dad. That makes a bit more sense due to what happens in the Acceleracers cliffhanger.
My introduction to this franchise, if you want to call it that, was the World Race movie. It was one of the first few DVDs I had as a kid and would rewatch it countless times. Everything about the movie was amazing, it's characters, voice acting, and music was amazing. Smash Mouth's Hot and the Wave Rippers were my favorite songs to listen to on repeat.
I still have deep core memories not only watching the show but playing the game on PS2. The different tracks still seem faintly familiar, and I remember gathering up the rings and doing tricks in the air. As a kid I think I only got to the second to last area but never beat it, might need to fix that
I saw a handful of episodes of this back in the day. And it is SO different from what I remember lmao. Like I'm only certain it's the same show because I remember "Accelerons" and the blonde dude. But wow. What a trip lmao😊
You provlbably saw the other video on this channel, but what you probably saw was the later movies "acceleracers" 1-4 a few years later. Big part of my childhood haha
I totally remember World Race! they had it on (I think) Cartoon Network's Toonami block one time near my 10th birthday and I got the PS2 game for Christmas that year and being a life long Hot Wheels fan, my parent's got me a "Highway 35" commemorative keepsake Christmas ornament that year too. Loved the music in it and the fact they had the Smash Mouth song for the theme. This movie and the tie-ins bring back a lot of nice memories so its really cool to see you cover this! thank you!
I absolutely love the 3d work in this movie, especially the facial expressions! Its got so much style and each character has so much personality. Absolutely obsessed with verts cheeky little face
So happy you're talking about this. This was a huge part of my childhood, and its sucks that not many people know about these movies. Hope you get around to the sequel movies Acceleracers soon.
I still watch this movie at least once a year. Didn’t have cable as a kid, but I had a VCR, and some movies, this one was always my favourite. It’s so surprisingly original, and well made, for a movie inspired by tiny toy cars
I used to have a couple of the cars from this, currently recollecting some of my favorites from childhood, gave them all away several years ago to my neighbors little kids shortly after their house burned down, totally worth seeing their little smiles ❤️😊
Couldn’t tell you the number of times I watched this movie and then obsessed over its big bro the acceleracers series. Would love videos on those if this vid does well for you. A really major mart of my childhood right here.
@@warlynx5644 look up "acceleracers full" here on youtube, there's a playlist by acelafan2009 that has the entire acceleracers series + realm shorts all in one playlist and the world race in another playlist on his channel. The playlist with the entire acceleracers series is only available under the name mentioned above when you search it but not on his channel itself weirdly enough. His normal channel name is Vert Wheeler. The world race playlist is on his page though. Unfortunately both playlists are cut up into a bunch of separate couple minute videos, probably to prevent it from being taken down. There used to be a playlist on here with the movies all in one beautiful 4-ish hour video but idk if that exists anymore. Unfortunately the movies aren't very well documented and kept for how good they are but they kind of live on youtube
REMEMBER ACCELERACERS? I'm so happy a much bigger channel is covering this series, I watch it to this day and it's one of the biggest reasons as to why I'm so passionate about filmmaking and cars alike
Man, I had the movie version on all the time as a kid, I loved both Hot Wheels and Matchbox. I am by no means a car guy, but this movie is the reason I learned how to drive stick. The way they animated shifting gears made it look so badass.
One of the best CGI during it's time, it definitely made you want more as a kid, as well as the merch, I remember McD happy meal toy car sets with the stickers
I only recently got into Highway 35 and Acceleracers. I’ve met wonderful people around this community and seeing how passionate Hot Wheels collectors are.
This was a great vid and it makes me happy seeing that people still care about the series even this many years later. Can’t wait for your accelaracers review
I was fortunate enough to own world race and the Acceleracers series on DVD, along with a majority of the cars and their tracks. Such amazing series that I revisit from time to time, and I still own the toys from then. I feel like the series could have been much longer had they been given more funding and time, but I'm glad they exist.
Man, I remember watching World Race waaaaaaY back in the day when I was young. It was so long ago, in fact, That I didn't remember most of the movie at all when a sibling showed it to me many years later. Tbh, I don't even remember most of this even now. I only remember the floating wheel in the sky as the reason I even had doubts of never seeing this film: It's such an oddity and a time capsule for me. Might have to rewatch it sometime.
Oh wow, so i bought the VHS for this way back when for like $10. it was only the first episode and i was super interested if they made more of them. im pleased to know they did have more.
late 90s/early 2000s had some incredible stuff going on for Hotwheels. From the Planet Hotwheels theme, to city tracks, a plethora of windows 98 games and then Highway 35 coming out to tie it all together, I will always love having grown up when these were big... heck, even the Hotwheels and Matchbox cars themselves were extremely creative, gimmicky or in Matchbox's case, much higher quality.
It’s great to see you talk about World Race, it was a childhood favorite movie for me, and now its sequel series, Acceleracers, is my favorite movie series. I think Acceleracers is a better than Highway 35, but Highway 35 is still one of my favorite movies. They’ve aged well (apart from animation, but it was good for the time.) I really hope you’ll consider covering Acceleracers as well in the future!
I remember watching this as a kid, and for some reason I'm remembering it being bundled with a game of some sort for PC. I hadn't thought about this movie in forever until I saw another video on Hotwheels and even then I couldn't remember the name of it until this video, lol.
On god i thought i only saw the first part when i was younger. I appreciate you more than you know for letting me unlock childhood memories i didn't know I had.
Freckin loved this movie!! Bought the dvd, 3/4 VHS and still have an unopened packaged of the Deora 11. Also "had"🙃 Acceleracers movies as well. Still have a few of the hotwheels and downloaded the movies.
this looks amazing but the premise of the show, the portals to different dimensions, reminds me of hot wheels battle force 5 in terms of the hot wheels "abilities" and the portals that they use for said races.
I remember both Highway 35 as a movie and Acceleracers as they’re both are part of my childhood that still were the reason why I love Hot Wheels. Also Please cover Hot Wheels Acceleracers next.
I do actually remember this one I remember writing in to one of their sweepstakes for some of the hot wheels used in the show they didn't have the one of wanted so they sent me two of the other cars. Still have the unopened hot wheels sitting in their boxes on one of my shelves all these years later. Maybe one day they will be worth something.
Omg yess! I still own the casseyye tape, the cell shaded look really helped styalize the charachers and cars! They did a pretty good job cinsidering Chi back then was umm interseting
You better be doing Accelaracers next. I cannot lie these series were a huge part of my childhood and I really miss em. Still want that Drone Sweeper toy they made forever ago.
Thanks so much for watching! Have you ever given any of the Hot Wheels animated films or shows a shot? If so, which is your favorite?
Do Hot Wheels Acceleration! Sadly it ended on a Cliffhanger but overall it was a Godlike Series!

My childhood right here. So glad to have stumbled across your channel and these deep dives. Fantastic work.
LOVED this show omg. Watched it on VHS over and over.
I rewatch this and the entire acceleracers series every year around Christmas without fail. Absolutely peak
Any good sites or channels to rewatch both series? Feeling really nostalgic for them and I’d love to see them again
Hella fire! Loved all these movies as a kid. My literal childhood.
Man, I had the movie version on all the time as a kid, I loved both Hot Wheels and Matchbox. I am by no means a car guy, but this movie is the reason I learned how to drive stick. The way they animated shifting gears made it look so badass.
I definitely remember this and even had a ps2 game about it. Was awesome
The amount of times I rewatched this on dvd as a little kid oh my GOODNESS
One of the best CGI during it's time, it definitely made you want more as a kid, as well as the merch, I remember McD happy meal toy car sets with the stickers
This is all the animated car race media that's floating around in my head.
2:44 They also get a lava plow at the front of the car.
I remember I got the first world race in a box of Granola Bars, and then the rest of the movie was of course separate. What a time to be a kid
I only remember the floating wheel in the sky as the reason I even had doubts of never seeing this film:
It's such an oddity and a time capsule for me.
OH MY GOD I WAS WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO, I LOVE THE WHOLE WORLD RACE, AND ACCELERACERS WORLD
I saw the film in its full form on Cartoon Network many years ago and it was so hype
this is my favorite hot wheels anything since i was a kid, glad you covered it.
I am a massive fan of World Race. I’m so happy to see someone whos content i enjoy talking about it
Absolutely loved this, you gotta make it in parts going through all 4 acceleracers movies individually
I rewatched this a month ago, i used to own the VHS. One of my favourites movies from my childhood
I found the hot wheels 2000s movies on kisscartoon way back and I love them also the soundtracks were so good
Yes i remember this movie, and i love it so much and acceleracers and the games, a great childhood...
YES! Been waiting so long for this episode!
I remember both Highway 35 as a movie and Acceleracers as they’re both are part of my childhood that still were the reason why I love Hot Wheels. Also Please cover Hot Wheels Acceleracers next.
I still have the VHS somewhere.Loved the series!
I love the fact that Mainframe(the animation team) used Megatron's Beast Mode as the t-rex obstacle for the drivers in the Desert Heat track.
Omg yess! I still own the casseyye tape, the cell shaded look really helped styalize the charachers and cars! They did a pretty good job cinsidering Chi back then was umm interseting
omg yes! gotta do Acceleracers next!
This was my favorite as a kid! Can't believe I forgot about it.
You better be doing Accelaracers next. I cannot lie these series were a huge part of my childhood and I really miss em. Still want that Drone Sweeper toy they made forever ago.
Yeeeeessss! He finally covered it!!!!!!
i’ve been looking forward to this video, i loved the Hot Wheels movies from the 2000s
The accompanying game released was soooo good, played thru again recently and holds up as a great arcade racer
I remember Hot Wheels: World Race. It was pretty cool.
