- The Oklahoma State Department of Education is mandating public school teachers use the Bible in classrooms.
"We knew that we needed to include the Bible directly into the classroom so that kids understood the full historical context of its role in American history," said Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters on NewsNation's "CUOMO."
Harvard law Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz also weighed in, pressing Walters to say "which Bible" will be used and asking if other religious texts will be studied.

I remember when they funded schools and taught kids things like, home economics, wood work, metal work, and finances. Things that they actually need. Now they take away the funding and don't even want to feed them.
I’m lucky to go to Minnesota public schools where we are well funded. We had a whole news room with professional technology to produce a school news show for example. It was great.
" The United States is in no sense founded on the Christian religion. " Treaty of Tripoli. Signed unanimously by Congress.
God is referenced in every state preamble and the bible is acknowledged as being the word of God in Public Law 97-280, it may not promote the advancement of any particular religion but it certainly was founded on Christianity.
@@existension9174 Yet not at all mentioned in the U.S. Constitution. Which was founded on the principles of the Enlightenment.
@@itsjustme6632 The constitution is a contract between the people of the united states of america and their subcontractors,, Christianity inspired the law and men made a grievous mistake by making this contract. Exodus 23:32-33 "make no covenent with their gods, dont let them live in your land"
@@existension9174 Why should I care what the Bible says. And who are the subcontractors? The U.S. is the first nation to determine that they will self-rule. No kings or gods needed.
First person he mentions is Thomas Jefferson, who literally had a Bible that he cut out all of the references to anything supernatural in it. Then there is Ben Franklin: 'Lighthouses are more useful than churches.' A lot of the founders were trying to separate church and state and weren't a fan of the traditional church. There should be freedom of religion, but there should never be a state-sponsored religion. End of story. If his point is that he wants to reference the Bible in history with respect to how it influenced people, then he'd better be advocating for all of the quotes against the church from the founding fathers too. And highlight the Salem witch trials
Thomas Jefferson did create his own version of the Bible, (commonly known as the Jefferson Bible, officially titled "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth." )
Contrary to the belief that he cut up the Bible to remove the supernatural, Jefferson's primary purpose was to distill the moral teachings of Jesus. He focused on the ethical and philosophical aspects of Jesus' teachings.
Jefferson, a Deist, was interested in the moral philosophy of Jesus rather than the religious dogma or supernatural claims. He used this version for personal study and reflection, emphasizing the practical and moral instructions of Jesus as a guide for living a virtuous life.
the bible is many different types of literature. history, biography, parable stories.
Both my kids just graduated from high school in Oklahoma. Wow am I ever happy for that! My kids won't have to endure the shit show this is creating. I feel sorry for the teachers and school officials in our state right now. I would certainly have pulled my kids fro public school as I'm sure many parents will.
Ultimately, I think that is what their goal is. Uneducated people are easier to control.
The conspiratorial part of me thinks this is a way to make public schools so intolerable parents pull their kids out and put them in private and charter schools…also something the right wants.
He seems less interested in a general education for students, and more interested in indoctrinating kids into right wing politics and his chosen religion.
EXACTLY! I live here, God help.
What about wicca? Wicca says harm none!!
💚💚💚
The Oklahoma SC said no to him and his idea of forcing other peoples children into his personal beliefs. They voted it down as unconsitutional. He cannot claim a bible class as 'history' or religious history (or whatever game he was trying to play) without allowing ALL religions to be included. Mr. Walters...Religious freedom means everyone does not have to believe what you believe. It does not mean YOU are free to push your agenda onto others. My children have their religion taught through the church of MY choice, not yours!
This guy needs to lose his job
Walters why dont you move our schools out of dead last place before you "expand the curriculum"
Teaching what the role of the bible was is very different than teaching theology.
SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE
@mormonobserver both of those things should be removed
Wow😮he sure triggered the demons in Alan, the hatred in his facial expression more noticeably apparent since they muted his mic.
Yeah, Alan Dershowitz reaction was a little bit over-the-top. It’s well known I believe that he is Jewish. I can completely understand why he does not want the Bible taught in the classrooms. But he’s also been an advocate that Jewish religious text and Jewish interpretation should also not be in the classroom so at least he’s been consistent. I can’t say I disagree with him.
@@gracielynn9623Shut up.
People who demonize (literally) and dehumanize others just because they have opposing opinions suck.
Binary, Manichean thinking is commonly used by conservative religious people drawn to authoritarianism. Life is complicated and confusing. Binary choices simplify decision-making, and the Manichean twist ensures you always ys come out righteous and your imagined enemies are pure evil and must be destroyed. It's also a cop-out to continue the "Us v. Them" mindset common to fascism instead of working to form a more perfect Union. 5:23
From outwith the US, I regard Ryan Walters not only as a fool, but a dangerous fool.
Would I be wrong in thinking that these actions/decisions are his way into higher office? Correct me if I am wrong in my perception.
I fail to see the point of training educators if you then turn decision making over to parents who have zero expertise in the field.

Ignorance at its best
The blind has been leading the blind way too long IN THIS COUNTRY, ...REMNANT2U...
The Bible has the Torah, Genesis to Deuteronomy (from what I remember).
Also, the transliteration re: slave was employee/worker. Women are not "second class citizens", they had roles to play, as pregnancy and child birth used to be very dangerous; not having to leave work for unpaid/low paid maternity leave.
The history of the Bible, taught purely from that point of view could be good, but add in the Vedas of India, and the Early Buddhist Sutras too, so that there's a broad, international religious curriculum, so pupils can see the Bible in context.Psalm 130 could last a whole term, with world music, percussion classes and dancing, of different world styles. A whole other term could be contrasting and comparing the Epic of Gilgamesh with the Noah story, and with younger children, they could say what animals they;d like, and which ones they'd leave behind ( flies, cockroaches, wasps, spiders?) You don't have to Christian to know that the Bible is an important , world literary work, of great importance, and it can be introduced in that way.
First, they have to be able to read.
Too much religion....don't need in public schools...teach Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Science,History, PE,....don't need to confuse the kids with fairy tales like Noah's Ark.
Well done Oklahoma! I hope G-d willing other states are going to follow your example - G-d bless!
Years ago, the liberals said. Equal time for evolution. Now they say no time for creation or the Bible.
Bring back the Bible in our schools.
The first amendment of the US constitution states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" (...) this is in clear violation of this.
Let me guess dinosaur bones are the work of the devil
Creation would be fine in a religious class, or maybe a course on fairy tales. Evolution is a fact. Religion is a delusion

Grow up
If you’ve got Pentacostals, Mormons, Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Church of Christ, Lutherans, etc all attending public schools, you don’t think some of them are going to disagree about HOW the Bible is being taught? It’s insane to try to teach religion in school this way. That’s why we have religious schools for each denomination. It’s not simply about Christians vs. everyone else. There’s more than one kind of Christianity, too. Which is why the founders of this nation said there would be no official state religion.
Oklahoma schools rank 49th out of 50 states. Those unfortunate kids need more than a bible.
Hey superintendent: It is not clear. You are using this as a loop hole to integrate religion into the PUBLIC SCHOOL classroom. If a history teacher (I would like to know who they are) really needs to do a bible study to talk about the letters of MLK JR then I am not sure they are teaching History, but religion. If a teacher really feels this is essential to instruction of history, then have parents sign a signature allowing for such a discussion to occur. Again - this is a loop hole for you to incorporate religion into the classroom. As an educator this makes NO SENSE and shame on you, superintendent. shame.on.you!
What he said was the others are already in the classroom. That means the Bible should be there too.
@@QRedknight Your comment makes no sense. Please clarify?

What kind of scholarship is Superintendent Walters promoting? He asks where did Jefferson come up with the phrase "endowed by our Creator." Seems the Superintendent is advocating pick & choose to defend your position. Does he not know it was President Thomas Jefferson who strongly believed in "separation of church and state", his phrase not the wording in the Constitution. Does the Superintendent not know that President Jefferson wrote his own version of the Bible, for his own reflection, excluding most of the miracles of Jesus and references to Jesus as divine. Does he not know that Jefferson is often characterized as a founding father who leaned towards Deism. I grew up in the state of Alabama. I graduated high school recently. We were able to be successfully taught history and about all of the various religions without having a physical copy of the Bible, the 10 Commandments, the Quran, the Torah, or any other religious text actually present. So what's wrong with indoctrinating kids with morality? I must have missed that part.
@@Wolfcamp555 the issue is that everyone has the right to choose their own religion. Children are impressionable on literally anything. What does your Bible say about arrogance, superintendent?
Its place is in a theology class! Not a history class and certainly not a science class! The US is not a theocracy it is a secular republic based upon democratic principles. So perhaps it may be more germane to be learning more about those principles, the emergence of peloponesian democracy, perhaps of Solon, or Drakon and the history of democracy. Would it then be imperative Then should by extension of your former logic would you consider it imperative to contextualise religious faith of the founders of these democratic principles, expanding upon and teaching the tales of the Greek pantheon. Extrapolation of the argument can obviously lead to problems, which if extended reach ad absurdum. It really isn’t necessary to teach scripture as a foundation of history. It’s being used as an excuse to continue the propagation of religious doctrine into secular education beyond the bounds of study of Christianity in comparative theology.
Ryan Walters is a bully and not too bright.
0:20 "Endowed by their Creator" is from natural law, not the Bible.
The Declaration of Independence utilized natural law because, by disavowing rule by Britain, the United States had no law of its own.
What makes a country sovereign is not its own pronouncement but rather recognition from other sovereign states. The natural law in the Declaration of Independence would be familiar to the rulers and leaders of European states as a sound justification to recognize the new country, untied to England 🏴.
Jefferson mocked the miracles recorded in the Bible, and he and John Adams enjoyed ridiculing the religious for their unthinking ways.
If you want your child to learn about the Bible, send them to private school like everyone else ffs. Forcing everyone to read this religious text under the guise of it being necessary in a historical context is disgusting. Just look at how embarrassing and poorly run public education is in Oklahoma - this is the LAST thing they should be prioritizing.
