- In this video I show how I prepare and spray this 1960 Chevrolet impala hood for show car paint. This is a home-built booth that my buddy Jerry built from scratch. The booth is made from wood 2x4s and plywood. This 1960 impala is going to be sprayed back to the original color which is roman red in a base coat clear coat. Ill list the base coat below that we used in this video. My buddy Kenith supplied this X prime color. Ill link his RUclips channel below, shoot him a comment if interested in the paint and make sure to subscribe to his channel. If you have any questions shoot me a comment and make sure to like and subscribe.

Gorgeous! Great job! Thanks for the tips.
Thank you for watching!!!!
Thank you for your professionalism, I like your way of painting, but can I kindly call you how to set the gun, the pressure and the amount of paint. Thank you
Your pressure really depends on your gun, mine called for 36 psi. If I need to get into a tight spot zi turn it down and when I'm out in the open I'm at 36 to 40 psi. The fan pattern is the same turn down your fan size if you need to get into a tight spot .Another tip is the smaller your fan is the more you turn down your pressure. I keep a piece of masking paper taped on the wall to spray on to set it up. As for fluid, this is my preference and with out the airline hooked up and no paint in the gun, I pull the trigger all the way in then turn in your fluid knob til it makes contact to your trigger and it starts to move then stop. I think it's more of a comfort thing for most people.
We know you are professional, but we need to see the speed of your hand, for us beginners it is important to see you step by step.thanks
Thank you for watching, it is hard to show. What I do is actually see how the paint is laying down.
I got a red 72 Plymouth Roadrunner I hope the paint will look this great.
You got it ,just take your time, thats when I mess up when I try to rush it lol!!!
Dig the red 😎, hardly wait to see finished 👀
Thank you stay tuned!!!!
never mind I STAND CORRECTED LOL AWSOME JOB
Hahahaha thanks Man!!!!!
I know it depends on the car, but how much base and clear is need to paint a GM a-body car including the jambs. Thanks for the videos
I usually buy atleast 1.5 gal base and clear.just to make sure I have enough left over for future touch ups or I mess up something lol
@@ACDesignsGarage another rookie question. That amount is before being reduced.
Not much C&B here, looks Great!!!
Thank you!!!!!
The underside of that trunk lid looks factory fresh. In fact, all the sheet metal looks phenomenal. Did the car come to you like that?
No it was pretty rough. The hood looked like it had been walked on lol the trunk wasn't to bad but still had some dents and rust pits in it.
your the only paiinter ( me excluded ) that I have ever seen seen that doesnt do the flip at the end of your stroke I remember my body teacher telling me dont do the f-in stupid flick at the end its stupid and you could mess the paint up
This is a great video thanks for the tips! How long are you usually waiting for the base to dry before clear?
Usually 15 minutes or what ever the product calls for. For the most time after I get my gun cleaned and put up and get me a pepsi its usually ready. Its best to wait a little longer than to jump in while the solvents are still kicking off. Thanks for watching!!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage awesome! Thanks for the advice!
What happens when you get a ruff finish is there a fix
As long as there is enough clear you can wet sand it with 2000 till dull looking the 2500 grit then polish with a roatery buffer or a DA buffer to a show car shine.
How much paint and clear coat do I need for a car hood? Guestimated ... Tricolor
I tend to buy to much lol but I usually buy a qt of the colors that way I have more for later. Truly a pint of the color would probably do it, but I would get a qt of clear just in case you get bugs in it or something crazy happens lol
What's the mix ratio on your end for base coat
I think it was 4:1 but it's been a while.
Great job and explanation!
What is the temperature range of the DCX61 hardner?
I am waiting for the temperature to be around 70 to 75 to spray a VW van project using PPG 2021 clear with the DCX8 medium hardener.
I’m new to this and hope it doesn’t dry too fast for my slow speed.
I will first spray the bolt on panels and at another day spray the body.
Will be using inflatable booth.
Thanks for the help!
I usually use medium temp reducer as long as it not over 75 degrees. If it goes over 75 definitely go to slow temp. Let me know how the inflatable booth does. Im interested in one.
Do you increase the air on clear coat and why is that ?
I like to turn it up a little to help bust up the clear a lil better, so it layed down smoother.
Looks good! What was the flash time between last red coat and first clear coat?
Thanks man. Its probably 30 minutes by the time I clean the gun up and tack the red over spray off the pannel.
I know you said you’re using a 1.3 fluid tip what air cap do you like for base and clear? I’ve always sprayed single stage and used 1.4.
I like a 1.4 for base or clear, but it seems to lay down clear better with the 1.3. It seems to bust up the clear and lay down better, but your fine using both! I know some guys use 1.2 for clear lol, I haven't tried that yet. Thanks for watching!!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage A 1.2 would be sooo slow
Or I was thinking because the paint code to my car is W A1 30 X pull me over red and I was trying to paint the hood only because of the chips and scratches it has on it The original paint job actually has a little bit of an orange look to it may be because of the sun UV rays for the past nine years. I was thinking maybe I could just put just a little tiny bit of orange in with that W a 130 X pull me over red and mix it up real good and maybe I’ll get just a little tiny bit of an orange tint to it. What do you think?
Iv never been good at cocktailing paint lol, i make a mess hahahaha
What kind of spray gun do you use sir? I’m wanting to paint my 72 Chevy c10 and a rookie novice so any ideas or tips please share them with me . I don’t want it to look like a backyard science project when I’m done
Its a walcom slim kombat hte 1.4 tip. I have a whole playlist how to paint your car at home, with alot of tips on my channel . The black widow spray gun at harborfreight ive heard is pretty good also! If you can think of any more questions let me know. Im also building a 65 c10 right now. I just painted the engine outside with base coat clear coat and it turned out slick. It is also under a playlist called patches 1965 c10, it has 16 videos on building c10s. Thanks for watching!!
If I was to paint my car, orange and then put a coat of hot red WA130x pull me over red paint on top of that orange do you think that might possibly give the red just a little bit of an orange tint to it?
I will say if you like the orange red look the factory chevy color ,torch red is your color. Thats my favorite color they made!!!! Ill put a link below to the color.

Red hot orange is nice too!@@ACDesignsGarage
Slight problem at my location. Tack rags are not usual to come by at my retailers. Only one of my local online´s I know carries them and they often come short in supply. What would be second best alternatives for last dust clean ?
Get you some shop towels and some spray adhesive lay them out put a light coat of the spray adhesive. Let them dry for probably 30 minutes then tack away. Just make sure its just tacky not wet. Hope that helps!!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage Will any ol´ spread nozzle spray can of glue dried to a lint free rag do, or ought I use something made for any particular uses? I worry about chemical reactions
What state are you in? Im in Louisiana and have a1963 Galaxie 500 Its a 9out of 10 but I want to change the color.
NC , thanks for the offer , but were just playing with our own cars now.
How come you don't wet sand in between coats
You don't have to with base coat unless you get some dirt nibs, as long as your in the drying window!!!
What color is that because it looks kind of orange and kind of red? Can I get the paint code? I would like to paint my car to this color
This is Roman red for a 1960 impala. Its close to the torch red I sent you but a lil less orange. Ill link my new video where we finished the impala and you can see it out in the sun.

What kind of paint gun is that I never saw a black one
Walcom slim kombat 1.3
can you base coat let it dry wet sand then clear coat
Ive heard of people doing that if the get alot of texture in theres but ive never done that on an all over job. But I have wetsanded imperfections oug the go back and blow some base back over it. Metallics would probably be tough to do . Sorry i couldn't help.
Do you clean your gun after every coat ? also how much time between
coats 1st time that ima try to paint my car sorry for the stupid questions lol
Thanks for the questions! There are no stupid questions thats how you learn. I only clean my gun when I change products like going from primer to base or base to clear, Also after im finished. I always take the gun completely apart when I do clean it to make sure that its fully clean. As for the time between coats its usually 15 minutes but your can should tell you. If you have any more questions let me know!!!!!
Why do you put reducer in the clear
Ac designs what happen of I wait for the next day to add the second coat ?????
It can cause a lot of problems if you wait unless you come back and sand it before the next coat. Sometimes ill shoot 3 coats of clear let it set a couple of days then come back wetsand with 600 then add a couple more coats then shes slick. But make sure you always sand after it drys so it wont peel off!
@@ACDesignsGarageif I don’t same before tbe second coat how lord does it take to peel ??
Also are you using 1.4 tip
1.3 but a 1.4 will work it just sprays just a touch heaver
Its a @walcomspraygun called slim kombat, I love it and its around 300ish.
Hello, I really like that homemade booth. I have some generic questions. How much time/days due you allow the paint to fully cure before you flip the panels over to paint the other sides? You mentioned the hood is getting a flat black color on the underside and the trunk lid is getting the Roman Red. I assume the other sides of those panels are still in primer/sealer? On the trunk lid why put clear on now when you still have to put base on the other side? I would think you would want to get all the base on at one time then clear everything once you feel it safe to flip over. Thanks Dan
Thanks for the question, yes its still primed on the otherside. Its easier to paint a half at a time due to how heavy it is. You could hang it up and do both sides at one time but you run the risk of runs when clearing. I like to find a hard line to tape to the you can paint one side the tape to the hardline and paint the other side. Everyone does it differently. As for time setting, I like to wait at least 3 days to a week just to be sure. We will also lay some thick quilts down on the stand to set it on to be safe before we paint.
@@ACDesignsGarage Thank you for the reply and the information.
What were the mixings?
I think the base mixed 1:1 and the clear was 4:1:1
@@ACDesignsGarage thank you
Your in a paint booth ! Not at home !
Actually its a plywood and 2x4 built room with a fan at my buddys house.
@@ACDesignsGaragestill it is a paint booth...
@Gegsite yeah it is but unless your painting more than 2 cars a year you dont need it. This is at my buddys house, I paint in a 2 car garage at home with just as good of results as the booth but mine does not have air conditioning .
Lies,,deceiving folk..my garage dont have fans n filters,no open cracks etc.😂😂
i think the title is a little miss leading, "at home" does not mean you have a professional Paint Booth with Air circulation and everything, maybe its just me and we dont have that kind of stuff in Europe for our Home :D
It is at home, but its not a professional booth, its built out of 2x4s and plywood with a squirrel cage fan running through duct work. Not needed if your painting one car
Haha you thin your clear as much as I do.....what gun is that btw?
Hahaha its a walcom slim kombat with a 1.3, I love this paint gun. Pretty top notch for under $400.00 contact Gabriel at motivated painters on instagram he sell em tell him ac designs garage sent ya if you want one.
@@ACDesignsGarage I've got too many spray guns....my Mrs will kill me if I buy any more. I love my SATA but recently started using a iwata
NO disrespect. but when I put that much reducer in clear it does not last. That car probably wont be in the sun very much so it should be fine. but Reducing clear even if you put more coats on there takes something out of it that makes it fail much sooner.
No biggie man, there are only certain clears that Ill reduce. A super high solid like this works pretty good but some of the production clears I wouldn't chance it for sure!!! And you're right. The cars I build never see a lot of sunlight, lol!!!!!
No offense But. Nah! Not acceptable. I can see the rough surface and over sprayed areas.
That's not at home a h
Actually it is, this booth is made from plywood and 2x4s
Could you ask Jerry what fans he used building his booth? Thanks
Here is the fan he used in the booth ,its a dayton direct drive radial blade blower 1600cfm 3/4 hp motor
#2C864. Hope this helps!
Thanks AC!
Gorgeous! Great job! Thanks for the tips.
