I live in a house of 13+. No food stays, and I’m the lacto-intolerant veggie who is rather picky. I defensively eat whatever I can, the rest that can be stored I try to keep kept away in my room or in cabinets; not the pantry. Leftovers are free game, so I can’t ever feel comfortable or safe leaving things out. The only thing that aren’t immediately eaten are vegetables, so that’s usually my go to. This leaves me eating far less overall, cooking less and making smaller portions in order to prevent leftovers. It’s ridiculous, but it’s the only way of not spending so much on groceries for them to be eaten by everyone else who can eat anything they prefer. It irritates me to spend $20 on ingredients that are specifically fit for me, in a nice prepared meal for it to disappear from the fridge overnight- even after declaring no one to touch it. :( (I buy seperately from fam as to provide for my dietary needs, and I cook for myself and everyone, as well as pay rent and extra supplemental money when asked to help cover food and other costs).

IE is the solution to binge eating because people with BED restrict then binge round and round. If you start feeding your body and cravings, you will find that the desire to binge will massively decrease.

IE is great for everyone honestly. Your body knows what it needs better than you! One tip though, sat fats are great for satiety I find. When I add fatty meat and butter (ghee if you can tolerate it!), Coconut oil, etc, I feel full faster.

I have another little advice for intuitive eating on a gluten free diet: When you crave something with gluten (for me it's been doughnuts recently), try to find out what your body craves. Is it the sugar, the fat, the yeast? Or maybe the jam or chocolate? Or maybe it's just the soft texture. And then just eat something thats the closest match (for example a quick homemade glutenfree cake in a mug with some jam on the top or a slice of gluten free toast with chocolate spread).
When I had to start a gluten free diet, I also was really afraid what people might think and say. But in my experience, when I tell them I have to do it for health reasons, the majority of people are really nice and understanding. And even if they're not, please, please don't sacrifice your health and wellbeing just to avoid conflict. Some people can be a bit ignorant but I'm sure even they don't want you to be in pain just for eating something.

I was stunned to discover that 90% of the times I overate it was out of social obligation or not wanting to waste food. Since starting my journey a year or so ago, I've noticed that my weight stays the same regardless of what I eat. I love seeing myself choose ice cream one day, and a salad the next. It's so nice to choose healthy foods, not from the pressure of wanting to lose weight, but because I actually crave them. And I love being able to have "junk" food in the house without binging on it.

This is very common! When in recovery, you would want to ideally work w a RD to help you eat a meal or snack regularly (every 2-4 hours) until you start to get those sensations back. I know its scary but its very common and its also very common to get those feelings back once you start regularly fuelling your body. basically there is a disconnect between the enteric and central nervous system and this needs to be rewired by consistently fuelling your body

We must remember that snacking is an activity that can be done with anything edible. If you eat one granola bar between breakfast and lunch, that's a snack. If you eat a length of celery with peanut butter smeared on top an hour after breakfast, that's a snack. If you eat a single peeled hardboiled egg at ten pm that is a snack.
Snacking does not have to involve consuming products from the Frito-Lay company.

    • @frostyskeletons8950
      @frostyskeletons8950 3 года назад +9

But if you’re craving something like Lays, it’s okay to have it. Maybe bulk up the snack with some celery and peanut butter, but IE is all about not restricting or labeling foods as bad. If you’re following IE, and you want Lays 7 days in a row do it without judgement. If you’re not following IE, and this is just a generic comment please disregard :)

"because you're done when the bag is done" This describes my eating so well... When it comes to healthy protein chips, I can have some self control (because I am counting calories... I'm not ready for IE yet) but when it comes to chips that I like I cannot put the bag down until it's completely finished. The way I eat it, it's almost scary. I desperately want to learn how to eat normally. Who wants to calorie count for the rest of their lives? Calorie counting doesnt have to be forever. Eventually youll get used to the amount of calories in the food and get used to the measured portions without having to weigh it or measure calories. Once you get used to the calories in the measured food, your body will get used to it too.

    • @rachelgarcia1790
      @rachelgarcia1790 2 года назад

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing that, the struggle is real. Have you tried putting a portion - without weighing or calorie counting, mind - into a bowl, instead of eating from the bag? Once the bowl is empty, wait a bit and ask yourself the typical IE questions; if you want more, you can get more, but the pause might give you the chance to hear from your body if you're full/satisfied.

That makes me happy:) I have been struggling with eating especially now with quarantine beginning and have enjoyed the educational aspect of your videos. I have realized that I am so focused on calories and weight that I haven't been eating a balanced diet. I find myself either nauseous/ not hungry or super snacky/not able to be satisfied. It mostly leans on the "can't eat enough" side of things but you've taught me tricks to get the right things in my body even if I'm struggling to get things down. Or if I super hungry that day and want to eat the whole pantry, how to satisfy cravings, and fill up while being well rounded and making healthy choices. As I've done this I'm slowly beginning to see my appetite balance out and I'm not feeling as sicky anymore. It feels so much healthier to find validation from your diet not from changes on the scale but from how your body feels:) I can enjoy workouts more and am reaching new strength and endurance goals. Its a journey but I love your vibe and your message. I don't even know you but you've quickly become one of my favorite content creators/youtube mommas. I love you and your videos! I know its scary but its very common and its also very common to get those feelings back once you start regularly fuelling your body. basically there is a disconnect between the enteric and central nervous system and this needs to be rewired by consistently fuelling your body

Thank you so much for this. Currently my dietician (Ontario) has me doing mechanical eating (myriad of health reasons and disordered eating tendencies) with intuitive eating being the goal. I still find these videos inspiring and when you mentioned how this is a journey, I found that so liberating. Like most things, I want immediate results, but I’m learning how patient consistency is how i’ll get there. Also, I could cry in gratitude at how you call-out diet culture. At one point I was AFRAID of oil as all the “healthy” thin people spoke as if it poison. Keep fighting the good fight. For every diet culture promoter criticizing you, there are more people like me, a mom of three who is finally breaking free of unhealthy mindsets. You as well as my dietician have changed my life. Thank you ❤️😭🙏🏻

I am enjoying this series so much!! I found your channel through Chloe Ting. I'm slowly working through your content and it's helping me reframe my relationship with food. I've been on a 2 year long journey with fitness and food. The idea of continuing food tracking that has been helpful for me seems unsustainable in the long term. I am so happy to find a RUclipsr talking about intuitive eating! I've heard of it but didn't feel like I could do it. I am not super restrictive. I eat what I like and pretty much when I want, but I measure foods to keep my portions in check. I am not a part of the population who has been dieting for years and years. I have been someone who eats to fulfill emotional needs rather than hunger. Now that I have a better idea of meal and snack sizes that make me feel full, along with some therapy breakthroughs, I feel confident that I can begin to practice intuitive eating. Thank you so much for your content!!

I’ve been trying IE for a long time bc of my mentality with the clean your plate issue. My parents were like plate soldiers handing out a plate of adult sized portions throughout my whole childhood and I was forced to stuff myself no matter what. I now put less than I think I want/need for any meal, knowing if I’m still hungry I can go back for a second plate which a lot of times I don’t. But if don’t put less on the plate I find myself overeating bc my plate still has food and I don’t want to waste it. This is a LONG process but it’s well worth the time and effort. As a mom I give small portions to my kids (using the hand method to portion out sizes for them and myself) and I never tell them their plate has to be finished but only that they’re full. Kids naturally eat smaller meals more often throughout the day and I make sure to work with that. LOVE your videos!!

This came right on time. I have been using myfitnesspal to track my progress and I’ve gone from 160 to 144.7. I have not reached the weight I want but I am so afraid of becoming obsessed and I am afraid of giving up. Today I ate way more than I should have. My daily calories are set at 1240 although I usually end up consuming about 1400-1500 today I went up to 3370. At dinner, I just kept eating... I felt ‘hungry’ and I was aware that I should have stopped but I couldn’t. I do not want to feel guilty but I do not want to repeat this. This is why I am scared of trying intuitive eating.

I’ve been dealing with bulimia for many years now and went to treatment for it was told all about mindfulness when eating but then I deal with the anxiety of having food in my stomach. I also love all food. So right now I feel almost hopeless that I can never get over this. I also have very strict rules on what time to eat. Everything is just very overwhelming and unknown for me. I start off the day with a very nutritious meal that I try to eat mindfully but then as the day goes on I get so hungry it’s uncomfortable and I end up losing control. I am so fearful of recovery but your video wants me to give another it shot and very good advice here in your video. Anyways thank you!!

Like eating one spoon in 20 secs and chew every spoonful really long. Also I went back to my normal eating routine and when I got hungry, I just first drank and looked 10 minutes after if i was still that hungry. Now I'm back to my normal eating!

I´ve always been taught to clean the plate completely. Also not to ever throw food out and to eat at least six times a day. As a result I´ll eat anything about to go bad even if I´m so full it hurts. I´m trying to break this behavior and eat intuitively I´ve noticed that I eat less than half as often and a lot less than I did before. I feel so much better and actually have an appetite for both lunch and dinner and breakfast. Now instead of dinner being the main course of the day (as Its always been for me) I make more of an effort around lunch and breakfast as these are the times I´m the most hungry and looking forward to the meal. I love your channel thanks so much for this vid!

Abbey, you are so awesome! I commented on Stephanie Buttermore’s recent video how I followed an all in shortly after she did and in that time, I found you and the Intuitive Eating book you share on your video.! I was a yo yo dieter and had even gone on phentermine not only for suppressing appetite but for increasing my metabolism because I was so tired all the time. So my all in not only was for freedom from dieting but I was also curious if it would reset my metabolism and sure enough it has.!!! I am so excited to report I have more energy than ever.!! My meals sometimes are 2 or sometimes 3 a day. Sometimes I snack and sometimes I don’t and not only do intuitively eat what my body is asking but it also intuitively does intermittent fasting. Also, because I am eating to satiety I am not snacking after dinner nor bingeing a particular food!!! I love love eating guilt free or not eating for that matter at someone’s house because I am simply not hungry. I just thank you so much for your videos and continued reminders such as this one... 💕

I always forced myself to eat my entire plate partially cause of my parents and mostly cause of family members that would visit and my middle eastern family does NOT like wasting food. Now this has sadly gotten me into a mindset of genuinely feeling like a piece of shit if I don't eat every piece of food on the plate, which ends up with me getting EXTREME stomach aches, constipation, bad energy and mood etc.
And it's really frustrating to then in the past few years see my sister side eyeing me for eating so much because she managed to lose weight even though she knows I have binge ED and body dysmorphia and PCOS AND fibromyalgia which makes working out harder, and my mom who shames me when I say I'm hungry when I just ate. It's not fun too already be negative about your own body, the way you eat, how much you eat and forcing yourself to empty a plate, something you learned from your family, and then suddenly get shamed by your family for doing the exact thing they taught you whilst simultaneously having an ED.
I've tried intermittent fasting which did help me stop my binging for a short while, but I was always low energy and noticed I'd either starve myself or I'd binge in those few hours. Then I quit and had a good diet for a few weeks until I started binging again, then felt bad and starved myself with literally 4 boiled eggs in 1 day and cried myself to sleep cause my stomach was in so much pain and then binged for months on end again. This time intermitten fasting does not help and tends to actually make me binge more because I end up not eating enough throughout the day and then in the middle of the night grabbing a huge bag of chips and starting my binge.
I'm really glad I found your channel and I think this might be a better solution for me, listening to my body. I've already started making changes in the past 3 months which includes removing dairy and as much gluten and possible as I realized it caused me inflammation in my stomach and focusing more on omega-3's which also helped a lot, I'm also getting used to making healthier snack choices, but these videos are helping a lot! Thank you for all this information and I'm excited to slowly but hopefully get better :) I've also been started to count calories again, but instead of counting it to lose weight I've been counting calories of dishes I really enjoy to make sure I eat ENOUGH in a day! I really hope this will help me in the long run and help me get a healthier mindset with food knowing I also ate enough

I was never told to finish my food but in my teenage years I didn't know when to stop. Whether it was cookies or pizza, I could eat large amounts without feeling full or satisfied. I remember finishing a pizza and then putting another one in the oven because I still felt hungry. I remember eating chocolate and cake and just constantly wanting more, thinking "I hope I don't feel like this forever". And I didn't. I have no idea when it changed but now I eat when I'm hungry, until I'm full and I'm able to have some chocolate without having to finish the whole 300g pack. Thinking about it makes me so emotional, I can't believe how much things have changed.

I found that a great way to start to break the clean plate mentality is to give yourself very small portions. This works great at family dinners when you are serving yourself and sitting down. The idea is you eat the small amount of food giving yourself full permission to finish it and full permission to serve yourself more once checking in if you want it. Over time you start to learn what comfortable portions are for yourself. I now know about how much food to put on my plate, occasionally having to some left over and occasionally going to get more food.

Love this video and what better time to focus on eating intuitivly than when we're spending more time at home? However I struggle a lot with eating while not distracted, if I don't have any sort of entertainment I just don't want to eat, I eat way too little and don't find it joyfull at all - even if I'm having my favourite meal. I love eating with company and enjoying meals with friends and family, but when I am alone I can't bring myself to eat more than a few bites if I'm not distraced. Anyone else who can relate to this?

Marie Bergström if this is true for you, while it’s not something I normally recommend, maybe watching a show or FTing a friend may help

I really needed this video. After years of dieting and eating disorders, I only have cues for various stages of hunger, and when I'm uncomfortably full. I haven't had a cue of being just satiated in over 15 years.
Any tips for people, like me, who are extremely uncomfortable with being hungry? I appreciate the tips for listening to fullness cues, but because of the ED, I'm highly uncomfortable with being even a drop hungry, and I overeat because of it.

this takes time but i woudl say you need to then eat every 3-4 hours until you get comfortable and feel "safe"

One of the things that I have done over the years to prevent over eating or binge eating is refraining from purchasing certain foods at all at the grocery store that I know I tend to crave and overeat... How would you suggest trying to incorporate intuitive eating principles given this coping mechanism?

Idk if this will help u. Personally I bought and ate foods with less than healthy ingredients. I ate myself sick off of them giving myself full permission to eat as much as I wanted with no guilt. I ate myself so physically sick off of them that now they make me sick to think about. While eating them they tasted good but they made me feel rubbish. My body doesn't want them at all anymore.
Edit: I gained a lot of weight doing this. I've been this size before so I'm adjusting okay. I'm not gonna lie, gaining the weight was challenging. Emotionally and physically.

I want to try this but it's honestly so scary to me. I've been cutting calories on and off since I was 11 years old. I haven't been overweight one day in my life yet I was called fat for years and years and it has completely messed me up.

I have now taken the plunge. I have been cutting calories since February and after figuring out what was the root of all my dieting and realising that I would never feel satisfied no matter how much weight I lost because my weight was never the issue, I'm now going off my diet entirely and I'm working on becoming an intuitive eater. Scary but exciting!

Thank you this is helpful. I do all the things you mentioned as distractions. And even if I am not working, watching TV or YT - then my mind wanders. I got this idea recently: try eating as if you are a restaurant tester. They have to focus on the taste of the food and can't think about the chores of the day. This seems to work quite well so far. Still, my hunger cues are all over the place. Sometimes I am constantly feeling hungry, other times I don't feel hungry for days. I have Hashimotos Disease and a high BMI and a history of emotional eating as well as yoyo dieting, so listening to my hunger is a learning experience which will take time, I'm sure.
I'll keep watching your video "courses" as a reference.
