Love the statement "intuitive eating is not for everyone right out of the gates." I would LOVE to eat intuitively, but the fact is, I am not currently "in tune" with my body. I don't get normal hunger cues so I have to eat when the clock tells me to. I also have a hard time discerning the difference between physical fullness and hunger with emotional fullness and hunger. I hope to eat intuitively eventually, but for now, following a meal plan made by my dietician is keeping me healthy, happy, and energetic!

I think one thing I'm fed up with in the fitness community is influencers selling programmes that promise that you will look like them when, in reality, so much of the way our bodies burn calories or store fat or build muscle is down to genetics. There needs to be more emphasis placed on being our happiest and healthiest selves instead of trying to get the body shape that is trendy this season. "Healthy" truly does look different on everyone and this realisation has allowed me to actually be proud of the body I have.
Great video as always, Abbey :)

If you've been a fat person your whole life....When you finally figure out how to lose weight, and you see it finally coming off, you do not want to do it "gently" or "intuitively". You want the weight gone yesterday. That's why the temptation to over-restrict is so dangerous. The only ONLY thing that stops me from eating 1100 a day is knowing the health risks.

I first embraced body positivity because I was born with deformities, have many many large surgical scars and some parts of my body that don’t work well and are Visibly not right. I am heavy but a small fat. I have been told I can’t be body positive because it’s not for me. And since I enjoy working out and want to control my weight I am not body positive. But I have no shame in my body and showing it off. I also want to take care of my body and not abuse it by refusing to feed 8t properly.

Think about organized religion and cults, they have phrases like "Only God can judge us. Don't listen to the haters/evil people who use Body Positive to shame or belittle you, you have every right to be positive about your body 🖤

Obese to Beast and Abbey Sharp! This is so cool! 🤩
I started intuitive eating two months ago (thank you so much, Abbey! ☺️), and haven't looked back!
I don't need to finish the bottle of soda or package of cookies anymore. I can feel fullness and stop. Now, I crave veggies, whole grains and fruit.
I feel zero guilt, and therefore derive deep satisfaction, from a couple of homemade chocolate chip cookies, a milkshake or a glass of cola and a bowl of chips.
Intuitive eating has diffused all the tension and self loathing I used to feel around food. It really does feel healing.

@@paigedavis7191 Abbey has a whole series of videos about intuitive eating which talks about the specifics of what intuitive eating is. It goes into why we 'overeat' certain foods, and what to do about it. It's not as simple as just 'I want to eat m&ms all day every day so I get to', we also have to honour our body's need for adequate nutrition, but we also need to allow ourselves to enjoy all foods (even "junk food") in moderation . But her videos go into more detail :) I hope it helps.

I can’t use pure intuitive eating but I am so happy I have those concepts and values now! I do count calories and track food for weight loss, but I also no longer accept any eating habit that makes me miserable and I do listen to clear signals from my body when it seems I need something a bit different from my plan. The combo helps so much, and the farther I go the closer I seem to get to intuitive eating. I hope to be all there one day!!

I think this is a wonderfully nuanced conversation that seeks clarity and understanding. I also noticed that this inadvertently became a conversation about how men and women deconstruct diet culture differently. The concept of "guilt" when it comes to dieting, is notoriously marketed to women. Whereas precise control over their food and workouts is marketed to men when it comes to weight loss. Both are doing a wonderful job at helping people live healthier lifestyles without the psychological exhaustion that often comes with it. Bravo 👏

Because grew up with food allergies, l always made a connection between what I ate and how I felt. Fast food gives me a scratchy throat and a runny nose. Eating too little makes me feel hangry/nauseous. Eating too much sugar gives me a headache and a general 'ick' feeling. I still occasionally eat fast food and sweets, but i'd call my intake moderate. I kind of lucked into intuitive eating--or, at least, into my understanding of what it is. I started watching John to gain insight into what my boyfriend, who is overweight, experiences. I started watching Abbey for insight into nutrition and info on sustainable eating. Boyfriend wanted to make a change, so I've been able to support him as positively as I can.

First thing in the morning I am not always "intuitively" hungry, but I eat because life does not wait for me to be ready. I either eat, even a little, to help ward off hunger till my afternoon "break" or I don't and become hungrier sooner than if I had. Nothing like doing physical labor and coworkers complaining their hungry/ talking about food for hours just because they do not eat. When questioned I hear the excuses: don't have time/ not hungry etc.
Of course I am not implying people should eat prior to work, only if the need/want to, but if the lack of food(energy) is affecting your output(work) then do what you need to do to optimize your time. The ability to think, plan and execute is some of our greatest assets so lets use it.

Abbey, I have to tell you that your videos have had such a profound influence on my life and I am so grateful to you! I am in the process of reading Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch and I am so indebted to you for recommending it. Not only is this something that has had such a positive impact on my life, but also on the lives of my husband and two children. We adore your cookbook and have learned to celebrate food and all the ways it enriches our lives. Thank you! Thank you!
One thing that I would ask is if it would be possible for you to eliminate the drumbeat playing in the background of your videos. I have no idea why but it is SO distracting to me.
Such a small, stupid thing but I wanted to mention it because I adore your content.

No judgement or anything- just an interesting observation.
John has similar food habits to me but he is seen as a diet/lifestyle role model and I have an eating disorder.
Avoiding liquid calories, repeating the same foods everyday and being anxious to try other things, saving up calories for the end of the day, etc. I can relate to him a lot but our actual journeys are very different…

Context matters a lot. When you’re obese, limiting calories is the healthy thing to do. It wasn’t the healthy thing to do for me when I was 85 pounds.

    • @BloomingLisa
      @BloomingLisa 3 года назад +2

@@oklahomaproud6665 I understand where you are coming from but I’m not sure I fully agree. Lifetime anxiety around food, restriction, disordered thoughts and actions are not the way to live for anybody, no matter what their size. If someone lives in fear or eating outside their routine or fears eating past some arbitrary number of calories, or fears outing outside their home that is disordered and can have definite negative effects on life and happiness.

@Rachel Forshee he did mention that going out for meals or eating meals he isn’t familiar with makes him anxious. He specifically mentioned that Stir-fries feel safe to him and venturing outside of his routine makes him uncomfortable. I’ve also watched his channel for a few years. I certainly wasn’t having a go at him, but was merely raising an interesting point of consideration.
Thanks for sharing your perspective though. Everyone’s opinions and experiences are valid and worthy of being shared 😊

I do have to say I feel the liquid calories in my coffees, wines, and occasional juices. I feel that there is something in my stomach and I feel happy and satisfied. Mind, I don't mindlessly drink. I naturally don't like to drink liquids that have calories in them very often, so maybe it's because I'm more aware when I do drink those things.

as an autistic w adhd who also deals w severe anxiety i can 100% relate to john irt having a handful of “safefoods”/“samefoods” on repeat. it’s actually v common w neurodivergent folks to stick to a limited menu. i still do try to get a variety of colors and textures into my meals (as well as a balance of macros ofc) and i do enjoy trying new recipes and ingredients, but it has to be 100% on my terms. trying to force it will only result in me developing a strong(er) aversion to x food/flavor/texture etc. and ofc there are some foods/flavors/textures that are just hard no’s for me and i’ve made peace w that. like john said, if my nutrition is overall pretty balanced… why would i put myself through that? lol
ps thank u abbey for a wonderful, informative video (as usual)!
