I love how they get so excited when someone uses an action from their class of the previous campaign. Travis screaming when Ashley raged. Ashley smiling whenever Laura used guiding bolt. Liam cheering when Sam disengaged.
My god, in the span of two or three weeks I've become obsessed with this show. I'm 40, and when I was growing up I was not allowed to play D&D, as it was supposedly "the gateway to Satan," but I always wanted to play. So I only ever played a couple of sessions of the old West End Star Wars D6 RPG, but otherwise missed out on all of this. Then life happened and kids and family and RPGs were the furthest thing from my mind. So now my kids are teenagers, and one of the greatest gifts is that I get to play D&D with them, at their invitation! They WANT me to play with them. My oldest son DMs, and I just created my first-ever D&D character. I can't wait for my first game with them this week. So thank you to the Critical Role team for showing me, a late bloomer, how amazing RPGs can be.
It was awesome. Got my 10-year-old stepdaughter addicted as well; I told her it was like Skyrim, but where you use your imagination and you get to pretend to be the character you want...she was excited to try. Then when my son gestured to her and said, "Why don't you introduce your character," she looked at me with wild eyes as if she was about to skydive, and I knew she was hooked. We got an assignment from a noble, killed an ogre, and did some fun RP. Then this weekend my oldest son was at a friend's for the weekend, so *I* DMed. The five of us played the D&D Starter Set for our adventure (the tried and true Lost Mine of Phandelver), and we played for about three hours. I drew a lot of inspiration from the way Matt narrates and describes the events that happen, and it was great to see the kids really getting into it. The highlight of that was probably that first goblin fight, where two goblins attacked with swords and two with shortbows from a ridge. One of the kids plays a centaur druid (doubling down on the nature magic), and she cast "Ice Knife," which she then chucked at one of the goblin archers with a Natural 20 and hit it right between the eyes. Needless to say she felt like a total badass. But then they spent the last 20 minutes trying out how to free some wolves kept by the goblins. It was really great to watch them try to work together, but I'm realizing I may need to figure out how to gracefully move them along to keep the action going. But we all had a great time!
Also, it helps put focus on what it actually takes to be a wizard. You can't just go around flinging spells willy nilly. You have to work for it and prepare for them with components.
The subtitles are helpful for me because sometimes a lot of people are talking at once and I just can’t seem to make out what they’re saying. Or maybe the whole party will start laughing and I can’t catch what was so funny.
Travis: “is it too late in the campaign to just walk away?” I can’t tell you how much I love the concept of Fjord just walking away and leaving the group never to be seen again due to the group seamen jokes
nott: "what about this as a counter offer? how much is the books?" Caleb: "13 gold" Nott: "Here!" then . . . caleb: "where did you get that gold?" Nott: "I collect things. Among them are pieces of gold. I have more" I just love Nott, she's so cute
It’s so funny how even Liam is so shocked that Nott just has 13 gold on hand that he asks Matt for confirmation. Makes me wonder how rich Nott secretly is...
Time stamps for future reference, or anyone else who loves these scenes: 1:17:45 Caleb asks Nott for the flask and Nott gives him the 13 gold instead 1:21:55 Nott explains how she has so much gold
I've been loving every interaction Nott has with the other characters. It's so damn cute when Caleb carries her and the almost paternal relationship they have. Is adorable the way she and Jester are like stupid little friends on an adventure. To me, Nott has been the glue that keeps everything together for this beginning of the campaing.
and caleb's enthusiasm that followed was cute! rushing to get new books, rushing to get back and be among friends and clam right up and to read, i relate waaaaay too heavily lol.
Okay tbf, Cure Wounds is touch and I don't think she got next to Caleb that turn, and even if she did there was no garuntee she wouldn't have taken those two opportunity attacks when she left. Caleb had not chance of dying that round since he hadn't rolled any saves at that point, so curing herself to ensure getting to Caleb the next round was the smarter option.
Quoted from my friend. "Fjord traveled around with Jester. Fjord Escort. Fjord rides a male horse. Fjord's Mustang. Fjord is a Hexblade. His Falchion is a: Fjord Edge. Fjord wants to throw a party. Fjord Fiesta. Fjord sneaks out of the inn. Fjord Escape. Fjord doesn't want to lose concentration, so: Fjord Focus. Maybe Fjord decides to multiclass. Fjord Ranger. Fjord has Eldritch Blast. It's sort of like: Fjord Laser."
I absolutely love how Liam is describing his spellcasting. Its so much more exciting than saying "I cast X". Really helps to visualize it happening and ropes you in
After campaign 1 finished Matt asked the cast to be more descriptive with their attacks, spells and stuff. Rather than just saying "I cast fireball" and leaving it to Matt to describe all the details, they could describe what they did to cast it and then Matt would finish by describing what happens depending on the dice rolls. I think the cast really embraced the idea, especially Liam.
This is why I love component pouch, instead of a wand or a staff. You describe getting the material components, how that translates into the spell and how it works thereafter. My favorite is describing the Haste spell: The material component is licorice root, so you just shove a very sweet thing into the fighter's throat and he gets a sugar rush
Just wanted to say thank you to whoever's does the CC for this channel. Over the years I've been losing my hearing. Now I can only hear loud, higher pitched things (like the groups laughter). I'm so thankful that someone took the time to write the CC instead of opting for incorrect auto-generated CC, this way I can still enjoy the stories and adventure.
Just saw this comment and wanted to say I’m obviously very sorry for your gradual loss of hearing, but also that it’s sweet in a weird way that you can still hear the laughter of the group. That feels nice
Matt: "Once again returning for an extended time for the foreseeable future we are happy to have-" Me: *ASHLEY JOHNSON!?* Matt: "sponsor and partner DND Beyond." Me: "oh..."
Travis is too damn smart. Grog is still one of my favorite characters, but seeing Travis shine with moments like the confused old man trick was awesome.
"These shells have been devoured." "The shells have been devoured." "The bells have been deflowered." "The whales are in my power." "The veils are covered in flower." *Appeased nod*
The best ending to that game of "telephone" would have been Molly looking confused, walking over to Fjord, and saying, "Jester passed along a message saying, 'These shells have been devoured,' but I figured there must have been some miscommunication."
Halfway through I was expecting it to go... "These shells have been devoured" "The shells have been devoured" "The bells have been deflowered" "Belle has been deflowered" "Beau has been deflowered" "WHAT!?"
After campaign 1 finished Matt asked the cast to be more descriptive with their attacks, spells and stuff. I freaking love the fact that Nott kept on offering to give Caleb money and pay for things and Caleb just laughs it off as a joke and then at 1:19:00 he pulls out a shit ton of gold and Caleb’s like 😳
@@comicorcas8501 it actually still is grammatically correct to say it as octopuses. Octopi is only a suffix to indicate plural of nouns with Latin roots. Octopus is derived from greek, so the proper pluralization would be “ode” however octopus happens to employ a classic English formulation, and affixing a simple “es” at the end will do.
Everyone is talking about how Travis going from grog to fjord is great and all. But I’m over here, just finished watching campaign 1, realized jester is the personification of ALL of Vex’s intrusive thoughts. I absolutely love it
2:09:36 And so it was that he took aboard two tieflings, two humans and two green people, a male and a female of each, so as to ensure that they would survive the flood.
Love how liam actually describes the spells in these incredibly descriptive ways. Adds so much to his turns. Also, the Texblade Jokes are amazing, nice save on beau's part on actually having a healing kit.
Matt encouraged all of them to realy discribe what they are doing (or attemt like Bo while shackeled) to give more storytelling and picture discribing to the players. something i would encourage every player to try, it can help to roleplay your character as well. i also dont mind situation like: Player 1: I pull that NPC realy close to me. Player 2: I want to inside check why Player 1 does that. Player 1: Well then go and roll. Player 2: Number (14 etc.) Player 1: Well it seems I did do that because... (reasons that seem right to give to Player 2 from how good he rolled - if he rolled bad it could be rather plane or just a straight up lie. if he rolled good it should be closer to the real reason) I just like leaving a lot of possibilities open to the players
I'm really liking how all of them are getting more descriptive about their turns. I found it a bit odd last campaign how Matt did all of the description of attacks in combat, coz my groups have always had the players do that.
Crazy thing is, I liked Vax but he was a bit too edgy for me personally, but I already love Caleb whom I'm sure has as much emotional baggage like everyone else but I guess I just get a better viber from him
In most things when they plug their sponsors it's obnoxious and people go out of there way to make it not obnoxious, but these guys make it as obnoxious as possible and it's absolutely perfect. What legends.
The difference is the delivery and they don’t try to hide that they have a sponsor. They straight up say our sponsor is blah blah blah and then of course Sam makes them fun. And then they mention them during like whispers or down time as a running gag. They make the adds fun as in I look forward to them at the start of episodes
a small thank you too the camera person that not only takes the mini's at a angle now but ZOOMS IN. Thank you SO much omg it made it so difficult to see them sometimes. You deserve AT LEAST a huge slice of cake sometime. Means a lot to those of us with bad eyesight. :>
Caleb: are they all swashbuckling swordsmen like you? Molly: no Jester: do they all tell fortunes like you? Molly: no Nott: do they all cut themselves like you? Molly: No, well wait that’s....complicated
Vox Machina - seven members and 2 brain cells that they share. Percy has one, and the twins fight over the other. Mighty Nein - one brain cell and Caleb is fighting everyone for it.
Spoiler warning, maybe? Although this gets brought up in comments everywhere so it's pretty hard for anyone to avoid getting spoiled on it if they're starting campaign 2 now.
3:40:12 God I love the Caleb Nott friendship dynamic, really gives Nott a real likeable personality

Nott: So we're going with them? Caleb: * giving an uncertain look * Nott: Alright Everyone else: * talking about the mission and not realizing what they're talking about * That little exchange was just absolute gold.

It’s really nice seeing Travis playing someone who has a normal intelligence. He’s a smart, witty man and it’s nice to see those skills bent towards an Intelligence score higher than single digits.
Very very true, but you've got to admit that Grog was masterful. You could definitely see him drop in and out of character a lot more toward the end of C1 just because Grog isn't really a planner, but other than that he played him amazingly well.
@@JtotheMeezy You could absolutely see Travis tip to things and know how to resolve certain issues all the time, but then not say anything because Grog wouldn't know it.
Matt, after campaign 1,asked the players to describe their attacks and spells more and, depending on role, he'll finish the description. Liam, took a BIG mental note of that apperently because yes, his spell casting is awesome

Travis is great, he really carries it with Matt. Does a great job of getting others to roleplay in tough situations and helps everybody out a lot. Makes sure they follow the rules while also make sure everyone is having fun. Both Matt and Travis do a great job of making this enjoyable for everyone.
Absolutely. They all do a great job. Of course, these are talented professional actors so they can go a little further than the typical table players, but they demonstrate an aspect of role-playing I try to encourage with the people I play with. Either exaggerate or opposite your "real-life" personality, but don't overdo it to the extent you can't play the character consistently according to how you define them as because your real personality doesn't "think" that way. It's better to just play yourself in a fantasy setting than to make up a character if you can't properly play them as intended.
He's inspired me to come up with descriptions for all my spells my new druid has, mostly involving her using her focus somehow, my GM loves them and has given me inspiration dice for doing them several times
I'm really new to dnd, but I've realized that I tend to do that too. Partly out of necessity, as our mat is on the other side of the player next to me. The other part is just excitment, really.
I've started standing when it comes to combat, and a few weeks ago I got up to act out next to one of my players when the NPC was invading his personal space.
SammietheAverageGirl you might have started it by this point but I would highly recommend it if you haven’t. The production value takes a while to get where it is now but it’s a helluva ride

The fight was great and hilarious, but can you imagine poor Noah? Sitting in his boat under moonlight, just dropped off some questionable individuals on an island and suddenly hearing just growling, a lot of loud impacts, some young girl singing that abruptly ends, seeing light suddenly appearing and disappearing a moment later and then silence - all this in a place where a witch once lived. I can't wait to see the next episode to see his reaction (if he wasn't smart enough to leave)
I fucking love watching Travis get so giddy about using his spells and shit. And the little dancey thing he did when he learned about his Spell Save DC was so adorable!!!!
I like the placement of Travis and Marisha next to each other at the table. It often seems, during combat, like they're helping each other with their 'new features'. Monks aren't Barbarians and Warlocks aren't Druids but there are similarities; Marisha is now a frontliner and Travis is now a spellcaster. So it's cool to see Travis quietly clarify things like multiple attacks for Marisha and likewise see her giving guidance on stuff like spell slots.
I really, really love the relationship between those two. Caleb is distrustful and uncommunicative, but he acts like a big brother toward Nott and despite being frightful and prone to flee, she jumped on the freaking demon toad to protect him. Love this kind of bond.
She swung a panicky swipe at an Imp and legged it, but as soon as she saw Caleb was in trouble, she took a flying leap at a Nergaliid and then threw herself across him to try and spare him further injury. Nott the Brave, indeed.
Can we all just sit down and appreciate how badass Taliesin's name is, not even in campaign, his name in general just screams badass vampiric character
The name Taliesin originates from the stories of King Arthur, and knowing how lovably weird and eccentric his family is, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he was named due to that specific reference.
Taliesin is in Arthur and the Mabinogion (as lots of Arthur stories are taken from Mabinogi)! I think the current historical belief is that he was a real medieval Welsh poet (probably not magic though...)
@@catrosenight now I remember (Thank you Druidcast) it's Folklore that Tailiesin wrote or composed the Mabinogion. Yeah and he was probably a real person but the secret druid parts are probably folklore too.
listening to the background music and realizing it's Skyrim battle music like, "wHAT IS IT?! DRAGONS?!" Travis, the voice of Roy Mustang: the lone horse.... is it a... *mustang?*
I’ll tell you, when I first got really into CR I looked them all up to see what they were in and you know I saw their IMDb pages and it has their birthdays, Marisha is pretty young and the guys are all older but laura and Matt don’t have birthdays listed. So one can only assume they’re immortals of some kind like dragons
2:30:30 Marisha says "frog-gigging", not frog-digging. It's a southern thing. That's why Travis (the Texan) laughs and says "Kentucky" to Marisha. A gig is a pronged spear used for hunting fish and small game like frogs. It's also where Texas A&M gets "Gig 'Em!" from- the Horned Frog is the mascot of TCU, one of their rivals (and Travis' alma mater).
Liam's comment about his British accent at 1:21:11 - as a British person, I can say Liam's accent in Campaign 1 was so absolutely *flawless* that when he speaks with his normal voice, it sounds like he's putting on the American accent.
It took me like 10 episodes, as a Brit, to realise it was affected. If Taliesin and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn hadn't spoken in their natural accents or of character, I don't think I would ever have got it.
Really? Because to me, as a Brit, it sounded very good indeed but still definitely very much an American affecting a British accent. I mean, not that I could do an American accent any better, and Liam is a VERY long way from the usual American rubbish attempt that ends up sounding like some awful Charles Dickens / Bert the Chimneysweep / Cockney mashup, but it's still very obvious to me that he's not British.
Disagree, Brit here and his accent in Campaign 1 was very obviously not native. Much better than some other American attempts, but still sounded like a bastardised American interpretation of an English accent. Liam's very talented in a lot of ways but lets not blow smoke up his arse on this one lol
Molly: "People come in they all got strange things they can do" Caleb: "Are they all swashbuckling swordsmen like you" Molly: "Noooo" Jester: "Can they tell fortunes like you?" @@jonnoo307 Yes and no, blood maledict is an ability, he activates his swords by cutting himself *edit* using Blood Maledict does cause the caster damage as well so he hurts himself with both but I think as far as story goes like veins burst for him to do Blood Maledict. I think Liam's tendency to embellish his moves with flavor works well with being a spell caster. He can say so much more than Dagger, dagger, dagger.
Liam’s descriptions of how he casts spells made me want to play a wizard with a component pouch
I'm so excited to hear his descriptions once they all get to later levels, it's exciting!

I just love Nott, she's so cute
I love the "I like this one." Nott is the cutest darling
It’s so funny how even Liam is so shocked that Nott just has 13 gold on hand that he asks Matt for confirmation. Makes me wonder how rich Nott secretly is...

I think the cast really embraced the idea, especially Liam.
it makes me feel bad about my own spellcasting now, and I'm gonna start being more descriptive in the future
I've always made my spellcasters have unique spells like a dwarf cleric that writes in dwarven runes over an injury to cast heals

The reward for being an exceptional DM is having exceptional players bring exceptional characters to your table.
He's inspired me to come up with descriptions for all my spells my new druid has, mostly involving her using her focus somehow, my GM loves them and has given me inspiration dice for doing them several times

Critical Recap at its finest
What does HDYWTDT stand for?
The fight was great and hilarious, but can you imagine poor Noah? Sitting in his boat under moonlight, just dropped off some questionable individuals on an island and suddenly hearing just growling, a lot of loud impacts, some young girl singing that abruptly ends, seeing light suddenly appearing and disappearing a moment later and then silence - all this in a place where a witch once lived. I can't wait to see the next episode to see his reaction (if he wasn't smart enough to leave)
Such an underapperciated comment
That cork removal noise around 2:10:00 was FANTASTIC. Having a voice actor DM makes a world of difference. Mercer is amazing!
Yes
I’ve be trying to replicate that sound all day. It’s fucking hard. Mercer is a genius.
2:11:07
I got really confused because I thought it said cock removal noise XD
@@tbcosplays9048 same thing really. XD
I love Caleb's toned down exitement for books.
Caleb's genuine giddy enthusiasm about finding books is just a delight to watch, I love it so much
I can relate to that.
I fucking love watching Travis get so giddy about using his spells and shit. And the little dancey thing he did when he learned about his Spell Save DC was so adorable!!!!
Always leave timestamps for these moments plx.
He’s so happy to be able to do more than attack on his turn
I like the placement of Travis and Marisha next to each other at the table. It often seems, during combat, like they're helping each other with their 'new features'. Monks aren't Barbarians and Warlocks aren't Druids but there are similarities; Marisha is now a frontliner and Travis is now a spellcaster. So it's cool to see Travis quietly clarify things like multiple attacks for Marisha and likewise see her giving guidance on stuff like spell slots.
Nott throwing herself over Caleb in an effort to protect him... my heart. My everything. ; - ;
Nott x Caleb
Partial Bullet FBI OPEN UP!
@@dylanwagner6790 hmmmm you're not far in i guess.... Later you'll get why the fbi is not needed
2:31:06 - "All you need to know is this: there's three dudes and three ladies. You do the math."

"Don't do the math."

Jester and Nott: "We can steal the gold for you :))))"
Everyone: no
Jester and Nott: :(
Can we all just sit down and appreciate how badass Taliesin's name is, not even in campaign, his name in general just screams badass vampiric character
The name Taliesin originates from the stories of King Arthur, and knowing how lovably weird and eccentric his family is, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he was named due to that specific reference.
@@Demonrifts Isn't Taliesin found in the Mabinogion?
Taliesin is in Arthur and the Mabinogion (as lots of Arthur stories are taken from Mabinogi)! I think the current historical belief is that he was a real medieval Welsh poet (probably not magic though...)
@@catrosenight now I remember (Thank you Druidcast) it's Folklore that Tailiesin wrote or composed the Mabinogion. Yeah and he was probably a real person but the secret druid parts are probably folklore too.
Taliesin is a guest player in Geek & Sundry's Vampire: The Masquerade series, and he nails the vampire vibe perfectly!
Jester: *rolls a medicine check* "A nine...?"
Me: You draw bandages over his wounds.
Jester: Yay
Me: with your art supplies.
fack im using that on one of my players a soon as possible
Whispers
*Noooooo*
Sam rolling that 1 immediately after saying "not even looking, I fire in the direction of the imp" is just perfect! Love it!
listening to the background music and realizing it's Skyrim battle music like, "wHAT IS IT?! DRAGONS?!"
Travis, the voice of Roy Mustang: the lone horse.... is it a... *mustang?*
.. Unfortunately it was a joke to a F(j)ord Mustang, but I originally thought it was a Roy Mustang joke too.
Micah Brown it was both
Laura Bailey is a dragon and her horde is made of dice
Would be the cutest dragon ever 😍
I’ll tell you, when I first got really into CR I looked them all up to see what they were in and you know I saw their IMDb pages and it has their birthdays, Marisha is pretty young and the guys are all older but laura and Matt don’t have birthdays listed. So one can only assume they’re immortals of some kind like dragons
Frat Guide To Card Games I mean, Taliesin’s is obviously fake because he’s also an immortal
This sounds like start of the ballad
@@fratguide9835 Laura and Liam have the same birthday. It's why they played twins in the first campaign.
2:30:30 Marisha says "frog-gigging", not frog-digging. It's a southern thing. That's why Travis (the Texan) laughs and says "Kentucky" to Marisha. A gig is a pronged spear used for hunting fish and small game like frogs. It's also where Texas A&M gets "Gig 'Em!" from- the Horned Frog is the mascot of TCU, one of their rivals (and Travis' alma mater).
thank you:)
Frog-gigging was also unfortunately slang for a gay orgy in some places.
Ohhhh thank you
this is deep lore
I always wondered why A&M says that lmao, thanks for the knowledge!
Yeah Liam is INSANE at accents in general and I'm so jealous
That's because he's originally from New Jersey and is somewhat suppressing his New Joiseyness....
Molly: "People come in they all got strange things they can do"
Caleb: "Are they all swashbuckling swordsmen like you"
Molly: "Noooo"
Jester: "Can they tell fortunes like you?"
Molly: "Nooo"
Nott: "Do they cut themselves like you?"
Molly: "Well, thats a complicated conversation"
The best conversation to come out of this session
what was the last question in relation to?? I can't seem to remember
@@Luna3141592 since he’s a blood hunter, in the combat before he messed with his blood to cast a blood maledict, which he described by cutting himself I think
@@jonnoo307 that's riiiight! thank you
@@jonnoo307 Yes and no, blood maledict is an ability, he activates his swords by cutting himself
*edit* using Blood Maledict does cause the caster damage as well so he hurts himself with both but I think as far as story goes like veins burst for him to do Blood Maledict. Cutting himself is absolutely the activation of his weapons though.
Its because hes emo
Laura Bailey (jester) is knocking it out the park with the humor, perhaps the accent helps, but she is on fire in this campaign
Fjord shutting the door on the guards is my favourite.
it reminds me of how you can hang up on the council in mass effect and it becomes a sort of running joke.
Sam and Liam’s RP together is so much fun to watch
The moment Liam drops his accent to go "Fucking anime actors" actually made me rewind because I didn't realize it was his actual voice, lmao
Time stamp?
Please
Yall want me to go back through the whole episode? It'll take a sec. I've been watching for a while now so I've forgotten where he said it
Don't worry about it
