Love that u were like "that thing they used to do on TV shows where the monster parallels their personal problems.." that is literally the basis of this show. High school as a horror movie. It basically invented that trope. This will happen a lot on ur journey. Someone will say like a phrase or something and you'll suddenly realise it was this show that coined the phrase lol

    "You have to heal. Heal!"
Heal has 2 meanings and Flutie uses both. To heal as in to recover from an injury. and heal, as in to sit down. Which Buffy did when he said "Heal" the second time.

  • @yvetterodriguez2550

I'm also the type of person that likes to dive deeper into getting to know who the character's are. It is traumatizing what these kids are going through and not being table to talk about it with someone for guidance. I try to put myself in their shoes. Try to understand it from their perspective and what's their reasoning for the decisions they've made.
Yes, the monsters are used as metaphors but now imagine if we lived in a world like that. That would be hella scary. Especially knowing our town is a Hellmouth?? The forces of evil gravitate to this specific location so you're bound to come in contact with many different types of supernatural beings. We've already seen when vampires came to town during the Harvest and held people hostage at the Bronze. Most of those people, including Cordelia, saw them up close but convinced themselves that they just looked different. That's their response cuz it's almost unfathomable to accept that such things exist in this world. So it is interesting knowing there's a person who was chosen to protect and defend the world from evil and you can understand how much responsibility is put on their shoulders when they're only 15-16 years old.
Can't wait to hear more of what you're gonna think about certain things happening with the story and who/what will come up later on in the series. Lots of cool stuff for you to take note of 👍.

    • @wolfofthewest8019
      @wolfofthewest8019 Год назад

I think it would actually be a relief to live in the world of Buffy and be "in on it." I mean, if you *knew* that there really were evil demons and sorcerers moving through society, causing all the evil, and that people themselves were mostly good and decent except when being manipulated by these monsters, the world would be so much more black and white. And you can take direct action. Vampires are scary, but they're a physical threat with physical limitations and can be defeated by the correct application of physics. It's a lot easier to address a problem like a vampire (kill it. the solution is to kill it.) than a problem like, say, poverty. A cabal of evil wizards is a lot easier to attack than some nebulous concept like "the patriarchy."

Well, the good news is that a character from Episode 3 came back. The bad news is Dr. Gregory didn't make it out of the teaser.
I don't think Blayne was actually raped. I think he just saw it happen to the guy before him and then he was terrified. (Maybe he's depressed that "Natalie" chose to mate with Xander over him?)
It's interesting to think the Buffy's description of Angel to Willow and Xander was "weird". Not even "gorgeous in an annoying way" as she said to Giles right after she met Angel, just "weird".
The actress playing "Natalie" was 33 at the time. So…yeah.
One of my favorite cut scenes comes from this episode. (They refuse to put deleted scenes on the DVDs, but I'm still hoping.). It's at the Bronze, while Xander is heading over to meet Blayne, we go upstairs and check in with Buffy and Willow:
BUFFY: Principal Flutie showed him my Permanent Record. Apparently I fall somewhere between Charles Manson and a really bad person.
WILLOW: And you can't tell Dr. Gregory what really happened?
BUFFY: I was slaying vampires? I'm thinking he might not believe me.
WILLOW: Yeah, he probably gets that all the time.
And then Cordelia shows up to complain about "my table" (it's where she and her group were sitting in episode 2) being "infested by losers", but Buffy wins the putdown battle and Cordelia turns and leaves. I just imagine how Alyson Hannigan would be playing Willow's reactions there. Oh, well.
And definite thanks to your mom and sis for pitching in!

There are several kind of wonky episodes like this in season 1, especially the first half of season 1. Not the strongest by a long shot both in structure and execution and even for the time the budget was pretty low. That said, I remember watching this when it aired in the 90's and appreciating that the show wasn't sanitizing the motivations and actions of its literal demons. It might be draped in 90's cheese but there's no soft pedaling here like in the later Buffy imitators like Charmed or even Supernatural at times. The network that aired the show, WB, did limit what they could do- the whole reason Vampires have those faces and turn to dust on death is that the network didn't want Buffy looking like she was killing regular people every week- but the show was never afraid to push the limits and as they find their footing that ambition is part of what made the show so iconic.
Also I get the sentiment, the allegory is so unsubtle it's barely allegory at all, but in-narrative I couldn't help but chuckle when you said "jail" about the literal supernatural hell beast planning to eat children because it had the audacity to drug the prey it was hunting. It's like arresting an actual black widow.

S1 as is always mentioned is weak due to its low budget, but it gets us to really know and love the characters, and 'the monster of the week' type format is evident throughout most of it. However, again it does provide an analysis of social comment, this time how the the experienced and mature adults can take advantage of the innocent and weak younger people. This time in the form of a mature female teacher who is being drooled over by all the teenage boys, and is using them for evil purposes.

I didn't watch it when it first aired, but I think it had been a replacement series midseason for why it's only 12 episodes? Gone are the days where studios had a few years to find their footing and gain an audience. Now, if your show isn't a hit within the first 5 minutes of streaming, it's a failure..

Forgot all about this episode, not one of the best of the series, that's for sure. Have you seen the movie for why they keep mentioning the school gym burning down? I have an affinity for the film, even though it's terrible, because Paul Reubens was hilarious as the villain and I love everything I've seen Donald Sutherland do as an actor. It's a fun watch.

And here we get the tiniest glimpse of just how bad Xander's home life is. While his mother is able to tell Willow that he went to his teacher's, that is all the info she has. Didn't even do the basics of getting a phone number or address in case of emergency. That is just bad parenting no matter the decade.

He's 16 though. I dunno, I had very good parents who cared a lot, and definitely would have made sure of those things when I was a bit younger but by the time I was 16 they really didn't know where I was a lot of the time in the evenings. I grew up in the UK, not the US, so maybe there's a cultural difference, but 16 year olds are/were generally fairly independent.

Again, don't mean to spoil anything, but along the way there _will_ be more"dealing with the aftermaths of things"...
