Buffy basically defined cult sci-fi/fantasy shows. A lot of the tropes in TV-especially teen dramas-you might be familiar with, started here, so it'll probably feel familiar even though you've never seen it.

Welcome to 'The Buffyverse'. You have chosen one of the greatest shows of all time. The way this series develops over the seven series is incredible with brilliant, characters, storylines and meaningful life metaphors. The show has everything life, love lust, friendship, betrayal, grief, joy and brilliant comedy too, all told in brilliant drama, you will love it. S1 of BTVS is a bit cheesy due to low budget etc but you will see it improving leaps and bounds from S2 onwards. It is an amazing show. Most people who start to watch it become totally engrossed in it and cant wait for each episode. Buffy and Angel are incredible shows. Enjoy your journey.

There was a 1992 _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ movie that the series is a loose sequel to. It tells the story of how Buffy found out she was the Slayer, while a student at Hemery High in LA. It isn’t considered series canon, but covers the broad strokes of her first exposure to vampires.

I haven’t seen the movie in some time so I’m not sure if Buffy’s age is given there but I do know you don’t have to be a senior to attend prom. You just have to be asked to go by one. There’s also a junior prom that follows the same rules.
As for “VERY LOOSE”, I’d have to disagree. Except for the incongruous nature of the characters ages many things from Buffy’s past mentioned in the show is supported by the film. And let’s not forget that both movie and show are written, or primarily written, by Joss Whedon. Last time I checked, only the creator of a thing can add canon to the source material. Whether that be in writing or vocally. I interpret this to mean (my view of course) that if they’re both created by the same person, share the same title and characters, then they exist in the same world.
In any case, the show makes several references to Buffy’s past that a watch of the movie would answer.

@Roy Phillips I didn't know about Mad About You, but did know about Nash Bridges. Mere Smith, who was the script coordinator on Angel S1 had me send a script to "please don't laugh" Don Johnson Productions. The request not yo laugh wasn't because it was to try to get a Nash Bridges job, but because she had met my brother-in-law, Don Johnson (no relation).
I was actually in the room getting Shawn's lunch order when Angel shortener Davvid Greenwalt entered. DG - "Why are you here?" SR - "I'm here to help break 22." (Break 22 explained below for anyone reading who doesn't know what that means) DG - "Go home and work on your pilot." SR - "We'll, I want to help with the episode." DG - "You're a young man. Pilots don't come around that often. Go home and work on it. If it doesn't work out, we'll have a place for you next season." The pilot was eventually The Sheild and he won a Golden Globe for writing it. I ran into him 10 years later and asked about what David said. SR - " Best advice ever."
Tim Minear started on Lois and Clark, the The X-Files, the Strange World. The Angel writing crew and staff were half Buffy people and half Strange Workd people plus two others who didn't stick around. Lots of X-Files people ended up on Buffy/Angel.

Buffy was so much more than teen drama as we know them today. It transcended all genres.. to put it into same basket like more modern teen shows like teen wolf is doing it a great diservice becase it was actually much more adult and intelligent show. it never took itself too seriously and had great sarcastic humor and yet it dealt with many many serious topics throughout its seasons in a very intelligent way and everything in the show can be taken at face value like supernatural stuff, or as a metaphor for many things in life. It was one of a kind masterpiece of a show made in a very different time that could never repeat. And I am so happy to see new people and younger generations discovering it all the time. For those of us that were growing up with it, it was a hell of a ride as those character matured side by side with us.

Welcome to the fandom, we generally have cookies. So for starters, let's cover the basics: vampires in the Buffyverse can be killed by beheading, being exposed to direct sunlight, being set on fire & being stabbed through the heart with wood. They can be injured by direct contact with holy water or direct contact with a Christian cross. A cross will normally ward a vampire away but stronger vamps are able to endure the cross for longer than others. That's it. Silver is useless, garlic does nothing. Vampires feed on blood, as normal. They can live on animal blood but the demon in them craves violence, death & human blood. For a vampire to turn a human into another vampire they must drain the human till they are almost dead & then let them drink some of the vampire's own blood. The human will then die & then any time in the 24hrs following sunset on the day they die, that person will rise again as a vampire. That's all for now, hope you enjoy the show :D

Excited to see a new reactor! The reason we join Buffy already being The Slayer is because there had been a 1992 movie, starring Kristy Swanson as Buffy, and THAT covered her origin.
(It was written by Joss Whedon [later of "The Avengers"[, who's running this show here, but it's not entirely canon, because the director of the film played fast and loose with Whedon's script. FOX, who made the film and produced the series, originally just offered Whedon the job as a courtesy, but he jumped at the chance to set things right, as it were. It's not hugely important to see the film right away [I might wait until after S1] because a lot of things are changed, and it's probably better to understand the mechanics of the TV series first.)
When the guy in the alley tells Buffy "I thought you'd be taller", that's an in-joke, because Kristy Swanson is significantly taller than Sarah Michelle Gellar.
It's unlikely any of the cast are currently secret vampires, because we've seen almost all of them in the daylight. (The only exception would be the "friend" in the alley, but vampires don't generally go around handing out crucifixes, for obvious reasons.) Of course, you're correct to note that this could change, moving forward.
I love that you're watching the original version of the show; as you may have heard the "Hi-Def remaster" is a complete disaster, so bad that people have done videos pointing out what a tragedy it is. (Don't watch those until after you've seen the series, because of spoilers.)
Also, if you can avoid episode titles (just "Episode 1.01" or whatever is preferable) that would be best. Some of the ones in the first couple of seasons are rather spoilery.
Chronology-wise, this comes before "Charmed" (which debuted when BtVS was in Season 3) and well before "The Vampire Diaries", which didn't air until this was finished. Although the novels by LJ Smith actually predated this series.
(And of course Twilight doesn't happen for another decade…but Stephanie Meyer was a huge Buffy fan. There's a reason that Bella Swan has the same initials as Buffy Summers, after all.)

*SO TRUE* about the HQ version!! I'm trying to convince my boss to watch BtVS,but I gave her an USB pen drive with the episodes from my DVDs because I'm too scared she's gonna stumble upon"the wrong ones"if she just looks for them on the internet!;-S

@@Nicamon Swanson is generally considered to be 5'6" (1.68m), although I did find a site or two that said 5'5". However Kristy claimed she was 5'7" on Twitter once (albeit she was talking about her weight, and she might have been in a defensive mood…"I'm 5'7" and I weigh 120 lbs [55kg], I'm underweight"…and thus inclined to stretch her height.) I think the preponderance of evidence has her at 5'6".
SMG, however, is definitely no more than 5'1 or 5'2". I know this because originally there was a rule that Alyson Hannigan (5'4" [1.63 cm]) had to wear flats, so that she an SMG would appear the same height. It's okay for Buffy to be the "little blonde girl" around taller men and mean girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter is 5'7") but quiet nerdy Willow shouldn't be towering over her, too, it was thought. So Sarah is no way 1.63 cm.
And I don't know about checking out the guest-star credits; do you want to spoil yourself for who's dropping by? (A couple of later-season guest credits were actually hidden on first airing, just so the audience wouldn't be spoiled, but union regulations required them to be restored for all repeats, which includes DVD and streaming.)
And yes, I'm not thrilled with "Twilight" being influenced by BtVS either…but when you're this memorable, you have to expect the wannabes to notice. (At least the vampires don't sparkle here.)

"It's okay for Buffy to be the "little blonde girl" around taller men and mean girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter is 170 cm) but quiet nerdy Willow shouldn't be towering over her, too, it was thought. So Sarah is no way 163 cm."Cordy is 170 cm?!?😱Geeze!!BTW I _really_ find the american mesures confusing as heck...according to what internet translated to me you first said Sarah couldn't be seen as shorter than Alyson, but if Sarah and Alyson were only 1 cm apart from each other I can see how you can easily make Alyson look shorter than Sarah, but 6 cm? Isn't that a bit too much??@.@ I mean...Jenna Ortega is 155 cm and Emma Myers should be 5 cm taller and Jenna wears *insanely high shoes* in"Wednesday"to compensate her shortness 😄(and she _still_ looks shorter than Enid!)...I don't recall Buffy wearing shoes that were _that high_ compared to Willow's(or viceversa)...but I must say I never really paid attention to that detail,so I could have just missed it....🤔I don't know,my head is spinning with all these numbers!!😵😅

As for Buffy's Swain resembling Mr. Bella Swan…I think it's most obvious in a certain S2 episode. (You know which I mean.) At least 50% of the reactors I've seen comment that scene is reminiscent of Edward…but obviously very different in tone.

A vampire slayer is basically something that has always existed and always will...one female warrior (with enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, healing, visions...and other secrets that will remain secret to first time viewers) they are randomly chosen each time the last one dies. certain females in the world hold traits that make them good candidates for a Slayers...traits like bravery, courage, valour, leadership, endurance, heroism and even some negative traits which technically could be used in a good way like wild or reckless. i can't remember what Buffy's traits were...i think they were Stoic and Strong Minded. There aren't many Slayers mentioned in the entire Buffy series...only a handful. Personally i find the story of Buffy's predecessor fascinating and it only gets mentioned in the series once and never by name. Her name was India Cohen and she was an army brat who was half american (dad's side) and i think her mother was like asian or Indonesian i think. India didn't survive long but her story was so emotional.

BtVS is (or certainly starts) a teen drama that externalises the horrors of growing up into monsters. It becomes more a dark urban fantasy later on, but it is certainly a teen show for at least the first four seasons.
You may recognise Alyson Hannigan from 'How I Met Your Mother' or the 'American Pie' movie series. Willow is such a sweetie, every viewer loves her.
Silver bullets kill werewolves and historically silver was supposed to protects from evil magic. Silver has no effect on Vampires in this show, but crosses and holy water burn them.
When first broadcast the first two episodes were together as a feature-length pilot. The show's first season is short as it was a mid-season replacement. On reason there are so many different monsters, not just vampires, is that they had not enough budget to build a graveyard set, they had to use a real one and SMG had a graveyard phobia (which, with help, she got over, but not until later).

Buffy had a Watcher in LA, Merrick; he dies in the prequel movie and we meet him once in a flashback. When she was Called she basically was Cordelia which is why she might get exasperated with Cordy throughout the series but they understand each other on a level that Buffy and Willow don't. Buffy knows how lonely it can be to be the queen bee.
This was totally my show growing up. It started when I was in middle school and I bought all the tie-in books, comics, the Sunnydale yearbook, you name it and the Watchers Guides that basically give summaries and trivia for each episode. There was something really special about the parasocial relationship between fans and creators in the 90s where we had fan clubs like that that would send you goodies and zines every month.

Can comment this since I saw you were on season 3 (assuming you even read comments on videos this far back). But you assume watching it through modern eyes the Master would be dead by the end of the season. That was not what people tought at the time. Back when this show came out the arc enemy could usually be counted on to be the main villain or recurring arch nemesis of an action show for basically the life of the show. Sure sometimes an actor would quit and thus they would either have to re-cast or move on, but the forumula of having a villain for a one season arc and then them being defeated at the end of the the season to make room for a new arch enemy started with Buffy, they basically invented that formula. So having him die at the end of the season was a shock, as was the plot to revive him in the season 2 premiere failing as most assumed he would be back since arch enemies were not just killed off like that. Now of course all of that is predictable and basically expected when you watch it now, but that just shows how it's influence is still felt.
