What you say at 16:36 "We're still going to get these interpersonal relationships to continue the plot for us" is the perfect way to look at this show. The writer James Baldwin once defined the difference between "plot" and "story" as The Plot being the series of events as they occur, but The Story being what the characters go through and how they experience it. On BtVS the characters and what they go through ARE the show, and the show never lets us lose sight of them. That's what makes it special.

I think this episode is such a great way to showcase what these stand-alone episodes for Buffy can be like in terms of using magic and demons and whatnot as metaphors/commentary on very real-life issues. It's definitely a cornerstone of the show as a whole

Don't get distracted about the Season 1 comments. The show does get much, much better as it progresses, but S1 is still fun on its own, and has lots of things to enjoy. Having watched the series during its original run, and having no idea what was to come, the show just continued to entertain and surprise. Tune out the comments as best you can, and just take the episodes as they come.

Honestly, I'd say the series starts to find its rhythm around episode 7 of this season. Episodes 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are all solid episodes, and all are better than a number of episodes we get in season 2.

S1 is definitely the campiest, and has the most weak link eps. It was also a last minute mid-season replacement with a budget of about $3.75. If you care about SFX, photography, stunts, etc. the series gets MUCH better as it goes along, and the writing gets more consistent, but S1 has its inspired moments, especially [spoiler] and [spoiler]. Oh and of course [spoiler]!

Since becoming a mother myself I understand Joyce a bit more. Wanting the best for your kid is natural. She isn't a perfect parent. But she doesn't know that Buffy is the slayer, as far as she's aware Buffy is just causing trouble, fighting, she literally burned down a school building. If my kid did that, I'd probably be pissed.
And because Buffy can't tell her why, she doesn't really confide in her mom, so she doesn't know why Buffy is doing these things. Not to mention she's a single parent, so she doesn't have anyone else to talk things over with and help her out. It's not Buffy's fault, but I get Joyce's frustration. There's no parenting manual, you just have to wing it.

The snappy & sassy dialogue runs through the whole series which is one of the jewels of the show. A high school cheerleader was considered a typical stereotypical victim in horror movies so when the original Buffy movie was created, Buffy was deliberately the anti-victim twist. This episode reminds us of Buffy's previous high school life pre-slayer.

    • @paulhammond6978

I just realised, they kind of did that with the opener of the series too - they did the horror trope of boy and his date looking around somewhere spooky, with the girl playing up the being spooked aspect - but then made the girl BE the vampire - just the dark version of the same anti-victim twist that created the idea of the "slayer" in the first place.

Joyce is trying her best, and for a single parent who just moved to a new town and is more or less starting all over after her daughter burned down a school building, Joyce is doing a good job of keeping it all together for herself and her teenage daughter. She has a lot on her plate, and I think her talk with Buffy at the end of the episode is actually really good. She said the best thing she could to Buffy at that moment: “I don’t get it.” She’s communicating to Buffy that she may be the adult/parent but that this is all new for her too and she does not have a manual. I think that Joyce’s honestly reassured Buffy.

Honestly I'm sooooo over these so called fans who keep dumping on the 1st series. It was originally a one off season as nobody expected it to be a hit, not even Whedon himself which is why it's self contained with hints of potential future storylines. It's also a homage to classic horror/sci fi/monster movies of the 50's & 60's. I urge you to continue with an open mind, without this series there would be no other series of this iconic show. darcie's watching buffy really summed it up in her Buffy season 1 thoughts video, she just got it ❤

Now Season 4 definitely has some good episodes, including the only Emmy Award nominated episode, but Whedon didn't know what he was doing with the season. I still think it was a crime that a certain Season 5 episode didn't get an Emmy nomination!
In the official Buffy the Vampire Slayer magazine that came out near the start of Season 4, Whedon said he didn't know what to do with Season 4. He had almost all of Season 5 mapped out, and part of Season 4 would be setting up Season 5, but he was having troubles figuring out the arc for the season.

I love rewatching season 1, constrained budget and all. The story behind it all is really interesting, being a mid-season replacement for which all 12 episodes were shot before it even aired (nowadays that might be the norm but back then you shot a few episodes, took a short break, then shot some more). What carries the show the most though that first season is its writing which is really sharp. And the Witch episode really sets a precedent for the rest of the show. We get the three genres summed up within the show's title: Buffy (comedy) the Vampire (horror) Slayer (action).

It's like a mantra whenever a new reactor starts watching the show: "It really starts to pick up steam in the second half of season 2". The obligatory comment that Charisma (Cordelia) was briefly a San Diego Chargers pro-cheerleader.
One thing that reactors and people introduced to the show via DVD or streaming have are episode titles. I don't believe the titles were mentioned on the original broadcast. Sometimes the titles can give away the plot.

Am I the only one who thinks Amy doesn't seem to be too bothered by Xander holding on to her at the end?
I don't think S1 is the worst season at all. But 2 and 3 are the best.
I related to the not really a love triangle at this time. More like three points on a one-way line. Willow -> Xander -> Buffy but not in reverse.
They didn't actually kill the mom. They just don't know what she accidentally did to herself.

16:25 People look down on the monster of the week type episodes way too often (and not just in Buffy). In Buffy - like in many other shows like Supernatural for example - many of the best episodes in the entire show (not just Season 1) are Monster of the Week Episodes.
17:50 Has nothing to do with Buffy being the slayer or having saved Xanders life - think about episode 1: The very first time Xander sees Buffy he's so attracted to her that he skates directly into something.
Fun fact: Elizabeth Anne Allen, the actrice who plays Amy, Julie Benz (Darla) and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) all originally auditioned for the role of Buffy.
The one actrice who didn't originally audition for the role of Buffy was actually Sarah Michelle Gellar - she originally auditioned for the role of Cordelia.

Over the course of seven seasons, there is not a single bad episode of Buffy. They all rank from pretty good to absolutely amazing. The thing with Season 1 (and the beginning of Season 2) is just that they can feel a bit cliché. This show has had a huge impact on TV history as it pioneered tons of things that are just really common today. So nowadays Season 1 can sometimes feel like "Yes, I've seen this stuff 100 times." They also didn't really have the lore down 100%. So some details from the first couple of episodes just kinda don't add up later.
You're picking up on all the right things though and asking all the right questions. I predict that this show will make you laugh, gasp and cry and you'll be sad when it's over. :)

Great reaction again, love your enthusiasm for the show. The bit where Buffy and Joyce are talking in the kitchen and Buffy refers to Joyce having 'Farah Hair' was a reference to Farah Fawcett Majors who was in the original Charlie's Angels, and was one of the most famous women of the 70's, every woman that time wanted the 'Farah Flick'. Witch was one of the better episodes of Series 1. Although S1 was a bit rough due to low budget and show finding its feet, it lays the groundwork for the upcoming episodes. Once this show reaches mid S2 it really picks up in every way, and produces some of the best TV drama ever written. In this episode the metaphor here is the 'pushy parent' who forces their child to things and is annoyed with them when they don't excel. The ultimate pushy parent, Amy's mum criticising her child and forcing her to do things she may not be able to do, then taking over her body. A decent little episode for early on in the show. Buffy + vampire. Redeeming vampires. Amy returning.

The show is all about Metaphors. The main metaphor of the show as a whole is "Highschool is hell". So it's literally on the Hellmouth. There are other metaphors in various episodes. This one is about as you said parents living vicariously through their children, in this case it's done literally. I think this episode was somewhat influenced by a case previous to this episode where a woman actually hired a hitman to kill her daughters high school cheerleading rivals. So her trying to actually kill Buffy, IS extreme and crazed, but a woman actually did try to have highschoolers killed in real life.

13:24-13:26 Let's put it this way: Amy's mom was the one talking to Buffy and friends at the beginning of the episode by thinking she was playing nice aka acting as she would think her daughter acted. Amy confirms it was "a few months" when she mentions waking up in her mom's bed.

First off, congratulations for getting the switcheroo plot exactly right, in advance. I literally applauded when you did that.
Secondly, I hope you do get your comments moderated (I see somebody has spoiled a character name; not a big deal, but below the standards that keep you safe from major spoilage) even if it means the comments dry up because so many can't resist playing the "wait until blah blah blah" and "it gets better" game, which is flat-on ridiculous.
No series EVER has "gotten better" with each and every episode. (Of the 144 episodes, I consider the series finale FAR from the very best one, and the pilot FAR from the worst.). There are ups and downs and "good" episodes will have weak points and "bad" episodes will have strong points.
For example, I consider this the weakest of the three so far, because IMO the characterizations are just a little bit off. Giles feels a little TOO ghoulish here (ask Amber about "the thrill of living on a Hellmouth", why don't you? I mean *her hands were on fire* for pete's sake), Buffy's mom is a little TOO negative (the grounding last episode was plot-inconvenient but we could see that she cared; now she's just griping for an entire scene and can't be bothered to pay attention to Buffy's life) and as bad as Willow chomping that pen for the sake of a clunky metaphor is, I like Willow trying to talk Xander out of asking Buffy for a date even less. That's more something Cordelia might do.
So, as cool as the plot twist might be, the character work IMO holds this back. Whereas somebody else might be all about the plot and not care about the character work. Which is why I get so annoyed when people jump on S1 because it doesn't have what THEY like. I hope we can move past this.
(And again, I wish you wouldn't spoil yourself for the episode titles. Thankfully here we literally saw the witch's cauldron in the second scene of the teaser…but if they'd waited until later to do that reveal, you would already have been spoiled. By season 3 they get past this, but early on the titles are a bit too spoilery, IMO.)
Good point about Amy's relative lack of trauma at the end. One might say they're trying to keep it consistent with the "I guess it was just gangs" rationalization from last episode, but those were strangers in a club. This is your (abusive) mom DYING (you believe). A bit too bubbly, indeed.
As for Amy's possible return…some characters come back, some don't. And quite often even the show had no idea which ones were going to return. Stories evolve. Enjoy the ride.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth Год назад

I should note there's plenty of good characterization as well: the "Willow, you're a guy"/"Xander, you're a girl" poorly-received "compliments" nicely define the relationships, Buffy's caring about Amy even when Buffy herself is about to die is true heroism and Xander and Willow, although they fail to stop "Amy", show well by trying. And Giles's protective nature is cool. (Is that meant to contrast with Buffy's mom not knowing about her life? Unfair comparison if so, IMO.). It's just that the bits I don't like drag it down for me.
Heck, it's useful to know that Cordelia was struggling with her driving even before the witchcraft. I guess Ms. Confident isn't always as competent as she'd like to think she is.

In the Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie (which, no, is not connected to the show, but they're both by Joss Whedon), Buffy was basically the head cheerleader, and her Watcher was *so* over it. I definitely recommend watching the movie at some point, if you haven't. It's so fun.

The first season is the worst, but it does have really strong episodes (like the first 2, and at least 2 more by the end, I'm not gonna say which, just in case). I really like this one as well. It sounds like your bringing other fandoms rules into the Buffyverse. Definitely not recommended. Maybe for generalization purposes but I’d draw the line there. I’m referring to your theory on witches being a hereditary phenomenon. It’s been a long time since I watched ‘Vampire Diaries’ but wasn’t witchiness hereditary in that show? Is that where your theory came from? In the Buffyverse it’s pure book learnin’ to Witch 101.
