      The Master isn't the master of all vampires or the first vampire or anything like that.
      He was just very, very, very old, and was the Master of a sect called the Order of Aurelius, named after a founder that was an even older vampire. Not every vampire is a part of that sect, or a part of the Master's line. (This is more-or-less covered in the first season)
      As for why he looked so weird or why he left a skeleton, that part of the lore will be explained shortly enough, if it hasn't been mentioned in passing already.
      ~~~
      As far as Xander's talking about rejection being something he's so used to, have you ever made a mistake and said "I'm such an idiot?" Or had something happen and say "that's just my luck"? Negative self-talk blurts out under stress. It's not intended to get a reaction. It is a reaction.
      ~~~
      Finally, a question:
      How hard do you expect this show to punch, once it gets going? Take that however you want. Drama, comedy, artistry... How big of a mark do you think this show left?

      Just curious if you are going to be reacting to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie that covers her first adventure as a slayer in L.A. or read the comic book series The Origin which is a retelling of the same story only more in keeping with the official canon?
      Most people think the movie is pretty bad because one of the actors, Donald Sutherland, took over the movie and rewrote the script, turning it into a much more campy comedy, but it is still interesting to fans to watch how it all got started.

      @Dunybrook I always tell people to assume the movie is Buffy's origin story as told to us by someone else, Xander or a guy I can't mention because of spoilers, but you know the one. It's what happened, but the storyteller decided to embellish a bit. Especially when it comes to the powers of the vamPYRES.
      I also usually suggest new viewers wait until after they've actually seen Hemery High.

      Odd thing with "strength" in the Buffyverse... It varies in entities from time to time. A vampire is a vampire is a vampire, but Angel had something else, something in him that gave him more resolve, willpower, whatever else that might make him more than just another vampire. But the state of mind of the character affects things too. Buffy was fearful of death, as said before, and that threw her off, made her weaker. Then it was done, and she was back, and that weakness faded. Focus, willpower, anger, despair, etc... all can change the power dynamic in this world.

    This was a mid-season replacement, which is why there are only 12 episodes. They didn't know if they were going to get a second season, so they tied up most of the loose ends to make it a reasonable series finale. • @bobbyclarkston8836
      @bobbyclarkston8836 Год назад +3

      Also, all twelve episodes were shot before a single one aired. Joss wanted to make sure to wrap things up as well as possible since they had no idea if they would come back for another season.
      A good example of a show going balls to the wall and not giving two sh*its about ending on a cliffhanger was ‘Farscape’, a tremendous sci-fi drama that aired during the turn of the millennium. They never had any idea if they would be picked up for another season, they just wrote incredible stories. After a mind-blowing fourth season cliffie the show was cancelled 😞 but due to huge online fan support a couple years later a two part miniseries was produced to wrap up this incredible journey. As far as I’m aware, this was the first time this has happened. A short time later, Joss’ show, ‘Firefly’ received the same honor, only with a full-length feature film titled: ‘Serenity’.
      Now, I’m talking about coming back to conclude a story that was originally left unfinished. Not a revival like ‘Arrested Development’ or a continuation on a theme. And I’m definitely NOT talking about a spin-off. (I think I started wandering a bit there at the end)

    @haddow777 Год назад +5

    In my opinion, there are up to 3 reasons why Buffy came back stronger.
    The first two have to do with her mindset. The prophecy made her feel like she was a lamb going to slaughter. So, she never actually went down there to fight. She went there to die. When she died and was revived, she was freed from the despair the prophesy engulfed her in. Knowing from that moment on her death was no longer a certainty, she felt emboldened, strengthened. Also, she now was in it to fight, so she would actually be using her full slayer strength.
    Another perspective she's been held back by so far the entire season has been her unwillingness to accept the responsibility of being the slayer. Remember, in the pilot episode, she told Giles she was retired. She's been trying to live a normal life has been getting dragged into being the slayer only because she has never been able to stand by while innocents die. Still, she's always considered herself mainly to be Buffy the teen girl and has been trying every chance she can to distance herself from being the slayer.
    When she chose to give up her life to fulfill the prophesy, she did more than just die. She made the decision that she really is the slayer and that being the slayer is more important than being Buffy. She finally accepted who she is and devoted herself to her destiny.
    This would have all sorts of effects when she realized she wasn't going to die. Her previous reluctance to accept being the slayer would have affected her accepting the strength of the slayer in her. Every time she used her super strength, it would have confirmed to her that she is different from all the other regular teen girls. It would have confirmed she no long is one. So, she likely held back a lot. Used just enough of her slayer abilities to survive, but so little she would and up messing up quite a bit and barely scraping by. This is kind of shown in the pilot when Giles was teaching her that the slayer can sense, or feel, nearby dangers. She chose not to use that ability, but instead to find the vampire using Buffy the teen popular girls ability to see outdated fashion. Her refusing to use her slayer sense resulted in finding a dangerous vampire too late and almost lost her Willow. It also meant she overlooked Darla and meant she did lose Jesse. If she had used her inbuilt senses, she would have sense both of them earlier.
    So, when revived, she finally accepted her being the slayer, was freed from the prophecy, and was finally willing to use all the power that was always available to her.
    A 3rd and much more controversial reason isn't really supported by any evidence and nothing in the show has been said to specifically make it true or untrue.
    It can be seen in the show that there are a lot of parallels drawn about a vampires bite. It hasn't been explored much so far into the show, so I won't get into specifics. Still, it doesn't take much time pondering it to realize it's a pretty intimate act. It's a type of kits in a way, there's a sharing between the vampire and the one being bitten. Angel's episode showed that there was a special bond between him and Darla, the one who bit him.
    Also, this episode showed that the slayers blood imbued the Master will extraordinary powers. At the same time, the Master was shown to already have been extraordinary as well himself. First, he had the power to sway minds with magic. Also, he had a strength that prevented his skeleton from turning to dust when he died.
    Basically, I think there is a good possibility that when a vampire bites, the exchange isn't just one way. That some of the vampires essence goes into their victim. When the person becomes a vampire, this essence creates the link that Angel and Darla had. In the case the human isn't turned, I think there is still a link, a little something extra. So, I think whatever the Master put into Buffy added to her strength. Basically, Buffy became slayer+.
    Again, this is just my opinion. Don't take my word for it. Just keep an eye out for bites and how the characters are afterwards. Also, keep an eye out for how the show portrays bites. It's not all about feeding and turning humans into vampires. There's a whole unspoken element to it.

    Spoiler free comment to really help emphasize how important this moment is in the series and in the world of Buffy. This is the first time in the history of the world that a Slayer has friends and family and someone they are in a relationship with. Before Buffy, the Watcher shows up and tells you that you're a slayer and tells you what to do and trains you and that's it. There's no time for anything else, they do what they're told.
    But Buffy is the first girl to question it. To refuse to follow orders unless she was going to follow them anyway because it's what she believes is right. The first girl to try to fulfill her destiny and have a life at the same time and pull it off. And because of that, she has someone there to raise her from the dead even when an ancient prophecy says she's going to die.
    That's the thesis of this story and the reason we are thrust into the world where Slayers exist at this time and not in the 1800s or in the 1970s, etc. Because this is the story of the one slayer that did something different and how it makes her stronger to be true to herself and to refuse to blindly follow authority. It's a powerful message for teen girls, especially in the day this show was released when there were SO few female super heroes or role models.

    The Master is just "The Master" not the "vampire master". No one on the show has made him out to be the master of _all_ vampires. He is a vampire, yes, and a master of _some_ vampires. And as Giles points out in this episode, the Master is one of the oldest vampires on record; which is presumably why he doesn't completely turn to dust.
    And because the Hellmouth is a portal, it wasn't a case that his death caused anything else to die; because he was linked with opening the Hellmouth, his death closed the Hellmouth and whatever was coming out of it retreated; as did the Master's followers.

    Prophecy Girl definitely the best episode of S1. Many who are new to the show complain about the special effects, but have to bear in mind this is 26yo show, and S1 did not have a massive budget, plus the writers were conscious of the fact they never knew if it would be recommissioned. Here you can really see the direction of the show changing, giving all the characters so far much more purpose. This incredible show just gets better and better, you will love S2. Some comic relief also, this show has the best one liners ever. The Master ' what do ya think, 5.1' and 'By the way I like your dress'. SMG'S acting is superb here. When she says 'I'm 16 years old I don't want to die' you really feel her anguish. Great enthusiastic reactions to S1, from mid season 2 onwards this show goes like a rollercoaster and never stops with some amazing episodes. S3 is just out of this world, S5 is just off the charts!

    It’s not the bite that killed, and yes, she died; it was drowning in that puddle. It only takes a few inches of water after all.
    And about the bite; her blood gave the Master the power to break free because her blood, Slayer blood, is a powerful force.

    Ah, here we go! I know this is supposed to be an end of sorts, being the season finale, but in truth, it's really the beginning. This episode shows you what is to come, what this show really is going to be: lots of heart-wrenching drama that, even though this is a horror show, is weirdly realistic and relatable. Lots of amazing moments and ass kicking. There will be amazing comedy, the characters will become deeper and more complex, they will grow and along the way, you will cry your eyes out. Well, okay, you didn't cry this episode during the "I don't wanna die"-speech (which is an accomplishment) but I did see you flinch there and if this show manages to make you cry: you are in good company, we all did. I'm looking forward to rewatch the show with you :)
    Last but not least: yes, Buffy did come back stronger. For one, she is suddenly immune to the compelling powers of the Master. Maybe dying did that to her, but I also think it has a lot to do with her, facing her fears and overcoming them, paying the ultimate price and *still* managing to walk away from it (even though through sheer luck) that allowed her to tap deeper into her powers.

    I was in this church congregation of young single adults (18-31). Marriage and family is an important thing in our church and one of the main reasons for this congregation to exist was for people to meet each other.
    I asked this gal out, and got a firm no. The kind of no, which is why did you even try asking me out, don't even try again.
    I was the clerk and had to record the minutes of the meetings.
    We had a meeting about what can we do to help people go on dates? Were there activities we hadn't been doing that might help people get to know each other.
    The gal I asked out was in the meeting and said that she doesn't know why gals when asked out won't go out with a guy on at least one date. At least give him a chance. The guys here are all trying to be good people, so its not like there is much chance of any harm.
    I was sitting there writing thinking about the previous week. I didn't say anything.
    Some gals had been complaining to the congregation leader that they never got asked out. I happened to know who some of these gals were, and I knew that in fact they were getting asked out by quite a few people. They just weren't being asked out by people who they wanted to ask them out, and to them it only counted as being asked out if someone who they liked asked them out.
    I can tell you the guys weren't asking out a lot of gals because they were dejected from being rejected so much.

    I think an argument can be made that this is the case for most shows or at least a good amount of shows, but with Buffy it's REAAALLYY true : you'll soon realize it's not about the lore, the "demons vs Buffy" stuff; it's about the characters, the themes, the metaphors, and the incredibly rich subtext that's gonna start developing as soon as Season 2. Its gonna be interesting witnessing this shift in you where you won't care about the lore that much anymore and you'll just be so engrossed in the wonderfully crafted and emotionally resonant storylines and characters, I can't wait.

The 'I'm sixteen years old' is the moment when Buffy became so much more than its (fake, because it was always a decoy) premise as a teen drama with monsters.

  • @stargazer1682
    @stargazer1682 Год назад +3

    She didn't necessarily come back "stronger" per se, but she has literally not only faced death, she accepted that she was going to die. That's bound to give anyone a different outlook on life, especially to accept that and then live. Up to this point, she's fought whatever needed to be fought, but I don't think she completely faced the fact that she could die; not until this episode. There have been close scraps, but she never had to deal with her own mortality until she heard Giles talking about the prophecy.
    Now she has a new outlook on life. She knows she could still die at any time, maybe when she faces the Master, but she doesn't fear it the way she did; and consequently now she has not holding back.

    The title "Prophecy Girl" is a double meaning, because while it does obviously reference the Slayer Prophecy that Giles is researching, but also to the fact that Buffy, as a Slayer, has prophetic dreams. And in fact Buffy has had prophetic dreams about fighting the Master since the very 1st episode.

    The Master looks very different to the other vampires we have seen. Buffy strengh depends on her mental state. After the fear of dying was gone, she was back in full battle mode.
    Very old Vamipres have sometimes special abilities, probably thats why his bones remained.
    I think this 'i have no breath' was just somerhing Angel said to give Xander a hero moment. Angel didn't need to breath, but he can still inhalate and press our air, just like he has liquid blood in his veins, but no heartbeat.

    I loved your discussion in the beginning about Buffy’s softer, or more traditionally feminine side. Being a hero is a traditionally masculine role and I often find that female heroes are written in a way were they either are given many traditionally masculine traits or they have to overcome their femininity to become a hero or the fact that they’re feminine is a comedic, or highly sexualised, aspect of their character. But Buffy isn’t a hero despite being a woman, she’s a hero and a woman. To me that’s one of the most revolutionary things about this show and it’s why I regard it as a strongly feminist show, despite the creators treatment of women.
