Zeppo was the name of one of the Marx brothers - a comedy team of brothers in the early 20th century, Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo, and Zeppo; they performed in Vaudeville and eventually movies. Zeppo was one of the younger brothers who never quite developed a comedic stage persona the way his older brothers did and consequently didn't gain as much popularity and ultimately didn't continue with later productions the Marx Brothers were involved in.

I have a feeling that the term in Urban Dictionary is only in there because of Buffy - the idea that Corderdia would know who the redundant forgotten fourth member of the Marx brothers was seems a stretch. But it's exactly the kind of thing a bunch of geeky TV writers in the late 90s would know.

    • @williambowman1660
      @williambowman1660 6 месяцев назад +8

It what is the term that was used in entertainment for many years. The reason it’s called the Zeppo effect is because Zeppo it was said did not seem to have any type of talent or add anything to the act. yet after his final film, with the other Marx brothers, the three remaining Marx brothers never achieved the critical or commercial success that they had
When 😂Zeppo was with them. Term with used as a person that, for some reason gives the group a greater purpose, and has greater results, even though they appeared not to add anything to the act. And that is what I believe this episode is about.Xander makes the Scoobys work yet he has no special gift . No one cared about Zeppo but the best Marc Brothers filing had him in the group. Hence the term Zeppo factor.

    "What happened?"
Well, Giles drugged Buffy without her knowledge to push her into a death trap without her powers, Gwen Post manipulated Faith and tried to murder everyone, and the new Watcher is...Wesley. You can see why Buffy would be more inclined to listen to Faith and why Faith is being extra rebellious, given that they've both recently been betrayed by authority figures.

The model for the structure of The Zeppo was Tom Stoppard's 1966 play "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead," which follows the two least important characters in Hamlet, showing things from their point of view. As they wander aimlessly through Elsinore, trying to figure out what's going on and what they're doing there, the action of the play we know whirls around them, past them, and in the background, as they remain semi-oblivious to it all. Stoppard directed a movie version in 1990, starring Gary Oldman and Tim Roth.
If I recall correctly (I read it in the comments for another reaction to this episode, can't remember the reactor) it was the writer of this episode, Dan Vebber, who suggested to Joss Whedon that they "do a Rosencrantz & Guildenstern episode" and they decided having Xander as the focus would fit the idea perfectly.

    Few things:
    1. Nicholas Brendon has said that he cried when he first read the script as he was so delighted with it, and its meaning for his character. He says it is one of his favorite episodes.
    2. My all time favorite episode! I love the development for Xander so much, Evaluation Zone put it best (IMO) - And Xander _does_ learn. In the fantastic Season Three episode, “The Zeppo,” we get to see the world through Xander’s eyes, the eyes of the one decidedly “ordinary” member of the Buffyverse crew. While Buffy, Willow, Giles, and Angel all face off against an earth-shattering crisis, Xander goes on a personal journey of self-discovery in his uncle’s souped-up car. Throughout this odyssey, he is emasculated in every sense, having his life threatened by a cluster of zombies and his virginity taken away by an uncaring Faith. As much as high school Xander aspires to be a macho man, his aspirations are all but destroyed by the episode’s finale. He’ll _never_ be the kind of hero his friends are. What he can do, however, is put his life on the line for them and be the one willing to make the personal sacrifice others will not: he’s everything good about impulsiveness. Plus, by the episode’s conclusion, he inadvertently saves his friends from being killed by the zombie goons’ scheme to blow up the school using a homemade bomb."

@@Nexusofgeek I think part of the answer to your question is that those of us who grew up with broadcast television, in some areas only getting a few channels, had little choice in terms of the available content - if we wanted to watch television on Sundays, we pretty much got to watch old movies or nothing.
Growing up in rural Vermont, my family only got 2 out of the 3 major networks to come in clearly, plus one public television station. Sunday afternoons were old movies on the networks. We got the network with The Munsters, but not the network with The Addams Family. Etc. There was one drive-in movie theater and one indoor movie theater within the 10-20 mile range, another more like 30 miles away, for the occasional special occasion, but mostly it was 2 networks, one public channel, and reading books.
Today, with a bazillion channels of television, plus a variety of streaming channels, etc., there's a heck of a lot more new content available, more than one person can consume even watching 24/7, not to mention access to DVDs etc, including access to most of the shows produced over the last few decades, movies and shows available just by searching for them - is it REALLY that surprising that a lot of younger folks haven't seen movies made nearly 100 years ago? That they may not recognize references to characters in such movies?
I suspect there's a lot more modern content that these reactors know well that I personally wouldn't have a clue about. For example, anime is a whole huge thing, but I have watched very little of it. I may be able to quote lines from Casablanca. The Maltese Falcon, The Lion in Winter, and other classics, but anime references leave me scratching my head...
So yeah, fewer people watch older shows, but not because they wouldn't enjoy the - it's just that there is so much more to watch. I'm pretty sure that a lot of things like the Marx Brothers movies are things I only watched as a kid because that's what was on TV. I am not a big fan of musicals - but I watched Brigadoon on a Sunday afternoon and loved it, enough so that when a local theater group put it on, I went to see it with my girlfriend and her family in their VW bus...

I’m really glad you were about to enjoy The Zeppo, which I think is great. I’ve seen some reactors be unable to get over the fact that the show is parodying itself by (among other things) switching the typical A and B storylines, and they’re just too upset to be “missing” parts of the Buffy story to enjoy Xander’s story, even though the point of the bits we see of the Buffy adventure is mostly just to make fun of the tropes they lean into (e.g. Buffy and Angel’s doomed romance (hyper-Menlo dramatized here), the threat of apocalypse, etc.).

As to Faith caring, in that scene, she is washing her shirt in the sink. The shirt she was wearing when she stabbed the Mayors assistant. She was trying to wash the blood out. Not because she was trying to hide evidence, but because she felt guilt. It is a reference to the seen in MacBeth, when his wife compulsively washes her hands after they murdered the King, and she can't get the stain off her hands no matter how much she washes them. So here's how I tend to see Buffy and Faith's behavior in this episode. I think for Buffy she's being tempted to be a bit rebellious, through Faith's pressure, because a.) the combo of what when down in helpless, b.) the after effect of that in the form of Wesley, and c.) almost drowning again. I think the blend of being pushed around by the council, feeling powerless against them and feed up with how thankless the work is-there she goes nearly being drowned again(triggering trauma), are all understandable reasons for a little teen rebellion and being more open to Faith's perspective that they are badass super powered girlies and they should be having fun with that. Also, why she acts a little extra with Angel, you know she's feeling herself and a little naughty. With Faith, I think she is really applying the peer-pressure trying to get Buffy to join in with her antics, because I think she feels self-conscious about sleeping with Xander. I think it's a thing she would normally have done in her past, but now in Sunnydale she still feels so left out and awkward fitting in with the scoobies, in a lot of ways she comes from a different background, and is use to surviving on her own, now she wants to fit with the group, and I think she's afraid they might judge her, and make things weird if they found out she slept with Xander. So because of that I think she's trying to get Buffy to loosen up/ be on her side/ maybe not be as judgmental when she finds out.

this is why i enjoy Cass' reactions so much. There is this sad hate wave against Xander these days that kinda frustrates me. is he my favourite character? no, by far. But still we need to remind ourselves that he is a young man with a difficult backstory /family and YES sometimes is he super annoying but i do think he is the heart of the group and i dont want to hate him for his mistakes. i love that Cass understands his character so much and doesnt jump on the hate train automatically just because most fans do.

Xander: "I've never been up with people before". Up With People was a singing group back in the day. Even had a song called Up With People. They were a feel good group. I've always assumed Xander's line was a reference to them. Their songs were innocent and positive so to use their name in a sexual way probably amused the writers.

I didn't appreciate The Zeppo back in the day because I wasn't a huge Xander fan, but watching now that I'm older makes me realize how genius this episode is. That moment of realization you had about the way the episode was shot was amazing. They did a great job of making you feel what it must feel like to be Xander, always on the outside of everything that's happening. Now I can't help but wonder what other Xander sideline stories happen while we are following Buffy. 😂

'The Zeppo' is fun because the show is spoofing itself with the huge subplot taking a backseat to Xander's escapades. They dialed the drama up to 11. I think they did too good a job, I'd rather have been following that plot.

Buffy sidelined Willow, not because slaying isn’t safe. I think she was worried about her and Faith’s behavior. Illegal activities and getting arrested is more than Willow was signings up for.
She wasn’t rejecting Willow. I think she was protecting herself from Willow finding out what she’s been up to. She’s probably dealing with guilt and shame for her uncharacteristic behavior.

there's been a lot of great explanations for buffy and faith's behavior in the comments already, but one fun fact i'd like to add is that there is some slight romantic subtext between faith and buffy, as one of the writers said that he was aware of it while writing, and joss whedon himself admitted that even though he didn't intend it, he did see it after the show had aired. eliza dushku also said that she saw faith as bisexual and having a thing for buffy, and played her as such. there's a lot going on with faith's character, obviously, but i think it adds an interesting perspective to some of the things she does in this episode and later on in the season.

The term "Zeppo" is reference to Herbert Manfred "Zeppo" Marx, the "straight man" among the Marx Brothers, a very successful comedy group in the early 1900s,. Zeppo Marx was long considered to be the most unexceptional member of the act.
They used the Faith & Buffy dancing scene from this episode and animated it shot for shot into the X-Man Evolution Kitty & Rouge dancing scene. You can see a side by side comparison here ruclips.net/video/GS29zhg7uqs/видео.html

I often wonder if Lady Cassandra was inspired by Balthazar. The characters just remind me of each other. Probably the constant moisturizing. And one’s a big yelling blob and the other is a trampoline as if that’s all they needed to make her different is make her flat.
The Doctor Who writers were big Buffy fans so some times I wonder about really similar details like that.

16:38 The great thing about this episode is the reversal that what would normally be the A plot is the B plot. The A plot is Xander’s thing. And the show is kind of making fun of itself, making fun of its own melodrama, like when Xander interrupted Buffy and Angel in this scene.

The contrast of the two plots in "Zeppo" was brilliantly written and performed. Ther Buffy side was getting tense like a usual big-enemy episode, and even the Buffy/Angel scene was kind of a "standard" emotional moment that Xander just happened to interrupt. Losing his virginity, to Faith no less, changed him so that even Cordelia's petty jibes had no effect on him . The Mayor must be the most cheerful, evil villain ever.

One thing with the episode Zeppo, is that everything is seen through Xanders eyes. So the drama between Angel and Buffy is extra drama-y. The way HE sees their relationship. The same with the others. Also, I was a bit surprised that he and Cordelia had never had sex either. They were pretty hot and heavy. I do wonder though, if that was another sign of how much she felt for Xander. He wasn't just another guy she was dating, he was THE guy she was dating, so she was taking it slow, even if the kissing was pretty heavy.

I really love the Zeppo. Some people have difficulty with it, at least on first watch. I think mostly Because the B story is the main story here. They try to follow the Big Bad Buffy story, which we just get tid bits of, so it doesn't make sense. It's a complete subversion of the typical show. Which once you get that, it's amazing, but when you don't get it, it throws you off. I think some people that dislike it, enjoy it more on second viewing, as they know what their in for going in.

Bad Girls was a watershed episode where all what we suspected of Faith comes to fruition. We see her influence on Buffy leading her down the wrong path. Buffy as we know is very much a good person, and rejects this way, but even though Faith kills Alan by accident, as we know it was all her fault due to her psychotic behaviour, and she just doesn't care, even when Buffy begs her to do the right thing she says she just doesn't care, having weighted and dumped Alan's body. And of course we have the introduction of Wesley!
